    Great comparative video. I’ve also gone back to consumer sets for gaming and movies. I was using a BVM 20F1 and the colours were undeniably outstanding but the blacks were lacking, the 480i flicker was too noticeable in movies and gameplay on later Gen consoles and 20” is a great size but 27”+ is my sweet spot. Have been using German branded CRT’s with RGB input and they do an outstanding job.

      Thanks! It's cool to check out CRTs from other regions. There is this channel, "RGB Rob". He reviews CRTs in Australia. Almost all the CRTs he reviews are not available where I live but I like to see them. Those Grundigs look cool!

      @@riggel8804 yeh I’ve seen all his videos he’s actually in the same state as me. We weren’t blessed with Scart on every set the way Europeans were but we do have a handful of sets with RGB. I use an 84cm/32” Grundig in my main setup and the image is beautiful

      @@MarcoRetro316 I like the chasis design on those Grundigs. Apparently there was one Grundig released in my country but it was super low production and I've never come across it.
      I get a lot of inspiration for my channel from RGB Rob. I want to review USA CRTs the way he reviews Australian CRTs. Before I started my channel I thought there weren't too many USA consumer grade CRTs that accept RGB. I am glad to find out I was wrong.

    the Sony Trinitron that you show first looks freakishly good, due to a feature called "Velocity Modification". you will find the setting under the video setting under VM. the tube in that thing was an extremely fine electron gun, an extremely fine aperture grill, and an advanced deflection yoke. threw whatever Sony magic they used they found a way to sharpen the picture. the guy that got mine from said as much before telling me that if I could load that 32in thing into the back of my truck he would give it to me for free. I had no idea the thing was damn near 250lbs. sadly, he passed away a few years back or I would ask him about it.

    I picked up a KV-27VF300 on the weekend and while it has some issues it looks good compared to my 27" RCA truflat F400T I'm keeping the RCA because it was my TV back in the day and I know it has low hours. So if the Sony craps out I still have a CRT. I don't have a way yet to put the 240p test suite up on it, but ordered a cable for my pi 3.

    I had that 27” FS12 as you called it, but I actually don’t remember the model number. I rescued it from someone’s garbage and it worked pretty good. Played a fair amount of 240p gaming on it and while I thought it looked pretty good, the geometry was way out of wack. To a bothersome degree unfortunately. I intended to clean it up and attempt to really fix that but then it just died one day and I figured it wouldn’t be worth it, considering I have another 10 crt’s in my collection. So I got rid of it. Aside from the geometry issues, it didn’t look as good as yours appears to.

    The comparison shots are excellent, nice work. That 27" wega and the toshiba AF are very impressive.
    I wouldn't be too concerned over finding a 310, it's a good set but highly overrated, especially with the freak 27" Sony you got. However I sincerely hope you can find an RCA multiformat. It's the sharpest curved consumer shadow mask I've seen for 240p. Feeding it 480p and higher is an added bonus if you're mostly a 240p gamer. (I still need to try dreamcast lightguns at some point).
    I'll be moving my collection hopefully later this year and I think you've inspired me to make a comparison video of my own. I can put the fv310, RCA, xbr48 and my 27" presentation monitor head to head. Cheers!

    I too own a Trinitron KV-27FS12, and it is by far my sharpest set. I recently purchased a WEGA KV-27FS120 thinking it would be even better given it's newer manufacture date, but it is quite a bit blurrier and the colors aren't as striking. The older 12 is just that good, it seems! Though, like you, I also find the enclosure to be kind of an eyesore with the bottom-mounted speakers. I've always been surprised to see that Panasonic doesn't get more love amongst retro gamers. My dad, a retired broadcast engineer, swore by them. @@riggel8804 It's not perfect, but at the same time surprisingly good. There's was some notable umbrella bowing when I got it, but I found the issue was (mostly) fixed by replacing a wedge between the yoke and tube that had fallen off tilting the yoke vertically. Now it's a barely noticeable horizontal bowing that's balanced between top/bottom. It also has the typical corner misconvergence, especially in the upper-right.
      I would love getting closer to perfection, but am also very happy gaming on it for a bit before I open it up again to play with the magnets. This is my first CRT with component and s-video inputs, and I've been making good use of them! :)

    Great footage of quality consumers, really digging the Panasonic and the JVC. I live in PAL RGB land, but was gaming for years on an out of focus 20" set until I got a 14" practically unused set for emulation purposes and then later a 17" Blaupunkt set that surprised me with it's scanlines, but was also out of focus. After adjusting that, it me realize how trivial that is, now my 20" set looks alright (it does have a notable red push though). Might get a small dot mask monitor if a good deal pops up (minor quibble here: I prefer to differentiate between dot and slot mask, instead of lumping them together as shadow masks, although with modern consumer sets there can be no confusion ofc, since dot sets are so old).

    • @riggel8804
      @riggel8804  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I looked into it once and it sounded to me like all of our shadow masks sets are slot mask. My understanding is that slot and dot are both shadow mask and that everything made in the 90s or newer is a slot mask. I like how the term shadow masks sounds so I use it. Sounds like a ninja. Have you ever seen a high end sony?

      @PuristRealist ปีที่แล้ว

      @@riggel8804 I only vaguely remember seeing a big Sony 16:9 set of a friend, that may have been high end, but probably not so good for older games. A lot of manufacturers went 100 Hz during the later PAL years, Sony probably no exception. Although if had the room, I would consider a 100 Hz set with a VGA input. I think they are much more common than HD CRTs in Europe.

    On what you say around the 2 minute mark about the same tubes being in different lines - from what I understand, CPU's tend to be the same way, two chips on a wafer next to eachother could get binned differently and sold at different prices only due to quality, which does cut down on a LOT of waste in my opinion, especially for something like a CRT tube. Just thought it was interesting tubes were classified that way as well.

    great video! thanks for detail comparison. I have 27 inch trinitron and 27 inch JVC D series. both have minor problem: Sony 27 inch has some dot-crawling ?, which is shaking its image slightly and non-perfect geometry. JVC D has perfect geometry so I use this one for light gun games. I still prefer Sony's very sharp and slim scanline type but... this imperfect geometry and dot-crawling is setback.
    recently I acquired 20 inch average consumer TV(emerson) with only S-video input for such a cheap price ($10). I love its brightness but its pixel size is so big... LOL I can't see much of scanline with this TV.
    luckily I already own 14 inch PVM so I don't have any complaint about smaller CRT but... above 20inch CRT.. I am still hunting for good Sony Set.
    but after watching your video I would hunt for Panasonic TV too! it looks so good to my eyes. I prefer over JVC D now.

    • @riggel8804
      @riggel8804  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the Panasonic's with the M tube are the pinacle of the shadow mask look. However I think any late generation Sony beats them out.
      Your Sony TV might need a recap to fix the shaking image. If I was you I would look in your area for a tech to fix it if you can't fix it yourself. The geometry is usually pretty easy to fix on the Sony's. I have a video on how to do it.

    This was a great informative video I just picked up a Toshiba 32a41 with component and it looks absolutely gorgeous. The XBR 48 that you have there was my holy Grail for the longest time it kind of still is. But I have a question does that one max out at 480i or does it do 480p? Cuz my Toshiba does 480i component so I'm thinking if it's the same I might as well just stick with the Toshiba but I'll keep an eye out for XBR 48

    • @riggel8804
      @riggel8804  ปีที่แล้ว

      None of the TVs in this video do 480p and that includes the XBR48. The XBR48 came out in the 90s and HD resolutions didn't hit CRTs until about 2002 and as far as CRTs are concerned 480p is a HD resolution. You typically want to avoid HD crts. They will not not display 240p and they upscale the image with a lot of lag. If you want to do 480p you might want to look into a computer monitor or another crt that will do 480p without upscaling it, something like a multiformat BVM or RCA proscan.
      There are guys that put a lot of time and effort into HD crts, they would probably disagree with me and they are worth talking to if you really want 480p.

  • @caseyjones3482
    @caseyjones3482 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Can someone explain why there would be scanlines when watching movies on a CRT? If a movie is 480i, I don't understand why there's visible scanlines on that 36" Wega showing Batman. I thought you only see scanlines on 240p content. wtf.

    • @riggel8804
      @riggel8804  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't have a sciencey explanation for you but I can tell you that really sharp CRTs through component or rgb will always have visible scanlines in 480i. My BVM is particularly bad. I think it has something to do with the fact that the interlacing happens so fast that your eye perceives it as a black line. This wasn't a problem for old low quality crts because they had a low line count and used composite so all the blooming obscured the interlace scanlines...damn guess I do have a sciencey explanation.

I don't know if it's just a patience game or what but most things I see within 50 miles or so of me end up in terrible shape (cracked housing) or has discoloration in a significant portion of the screen.

      It's getting harder. I use facebook marketplace and craigslist. You can make a craigslist alert for something generic like "tv" and check it every day for what's new. Might need to drive further. Or if it's close pick it up even if it doesn't sound that great. You might be surprised when you get it home. If you don't like it take it to the dump.

      I tested the B&O last week and while it has great picture (high end Blackline Philips shadow mask tube), a very convenient size (25'' and extremely narrow for a CRT) and better speakers than any other TV I've ever seen... it doesn't look as sharp as my KV Trinitron. Thing is it was a main room TV on a rich family home so, I don't think it has many hours on as a living room set. It may be a good investment since I have limited room for this hobby and I'm getting a good deal.
      The B&O looks super cool, has amazing build quality, many extra features, and it destroys my Trinitron in the sound department, but the picture quality doesn't justify the price most people ask for those TVs compared to other high end consumer CRTs IMO.

    Dude. Can you help me? I need your advice.
    I wanna build some home arcade gamestation.
    My Favorite games are WWF Wrestlemania Arcade and MK3 by Midway.
    When I go to some arcade salons, I play these games and the picture is amazing, it's very bright and contrasting.
    I also played these games on an emulator on Laptop - but the image quality is completely different from that on a CRT screen. Even if I use different settings and masks.
    The question is this.
    I would like to make an image of the same quality as in salons. I understand that for this I need a CRT monitor.
    What would be the best solution? Buy a CRT TV and connect it to it? Or should I look for CRT monitors specifically for these midway cabinets?
    Is there any alternative to CRT TVs - or a better solution for my dream? PVM?
    Also I think, aspect ratio of midway games looks a little bit different than 4:3. When I run the game on the emulator, the image is a little flattened horizontally - although the original signal is 4:3. I set up like 13:9 and it’s ok.
    I think the CRT TV 5:4 won’t be good for that reason.
    I’m going to use FPGA Mister and emulation of MAME signal until the moment when FPGA MiSTer starts to work with MAME.
    I will appreciate it if you recommend some good options.

      There's a bunch of different ways you can go about it but it sounds like you want something high end/arcade perfect. You can purchase the actual arcade boards, a supergun and crt. That's probably the easiest way to do it. There is nothing special about midway crts any crt will work. I would recommend getting a consumer grade crt with component and then using a rgb to comp transcoder to get the video signal from the arcade board into the crt.
      Alternatively you can use crtemudriver or MiSTer cast. But those are hard to setup.
      What your trying to do isn't going to be cheap or easy. You might just want to use a high end/ low lag lcd gaming monitor with a good scanline filter and call it a day.
      Midway uses unusual resolutions but you can find them online and match them to your crt/emulator.
      I use crtemudriver with retroarch to play mk3 with superresolutions and it looks and plays amazing.

      @@riggel8804 Yes please do a video on voltage regulators as I hear alot of talk but no video on it, I want to see the difference. I assume a pvm or bvm has voltage regulator. Does a less bloomy picture mean it is sharper?

    • @riggel8804
      @riggel8804  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All tvs built in the 90s ir later have a voltage regulation circuit. Some are better than others. You can tell how good the circuit is by seeing how bad the tv blooms when you blast the contrast. However anyone with sense knows you don't blast the contrast ever. I have some tvs with bad hv regulation that look really sharp and s9me tvs with excellent voltage regulation that are not sharp. My bvm has excellent voltage regulation but it's not as good as my Mitsubishi and the bvm is bar far and away sharper than the Mitsubishi.

    Judging by the looks of you, you seem to understand Japanese culture and anime well fully like I do! Back then, it could be used as an easy guide for whenever you read books on how to date! Even though I am only 17 years old, I also grew up with all these things, knowing all about love and life. Because of how this new modern generation is, I have been just dedicating my life to collecting CRT's like you, as I have given up on finding real love due to all this, as now, modern Japanese anime is just for the most part a bad influence on how to behave very Immatue and always teaches you how to fail in finding and getting true love these days! We should try to get in touch with each other more often, as we do share nearly the same interests; especially CRT's! What do you think Riggel?
