Thanks for stopping by to watch this very un-sexy topic on yarn substitution 😋I know it's not terribly exciting, but along with swatching, it's one of THE most important exercises you can do to ensure successful projects. And as I always say, successful projects make happy knitters (and crocheters!) 😀
I have been knitting for years. I just realized that I don't even LOOK at what yarn is used in the pattern. 😮. I am rarely wanting anything to look exactly like the pattern. But this video has been a revelation. So much more to yarn than I ever thought about before. Thanks!
I think I become addicted to your channel. You are just so good. Your episode on yarn substitution is pure gold! Yes, intuitively, I have done all those things you list, made all the same considerations, enjoyed the math involved (yes, I’m a geek)….But to have someone present all this in a coherent, informative and entertaining way is just so satisfying. And many thanks for the hint with the yarn sub website. Been there already and found what I was after so easily. Along with having found a new online shop with lots of brands on offer just made my day! 😊🙏😎 Oh, almost forgot - the blue you are wearing is your colour!!!!
Your Tip Jar videos are fast becoming my new favourite addiction on YT. Even when I learn nothing new as this one, the way you explain and discribe things is fab. Now to knit more xmas gifts while I wait in anticipation of the next tip jar video!
@@KnicoleknitsCan't think of anything specific, and If I did suggest specific things I might miss out on something truly spectacular like the running thread, what a game changer that will be! But if backed into a corner on threat of martini, tip suggestion or death, asside from choosing martini of course maybe some local customs you have that you dont even consider unique but to someone like me in the UK it might be a game changer?
Excellent suggestions, i run into the problem when knitting with Isabell Kraemers pattern she is a German designer, and I can not get those yarns shipped to California, or they charge more for shipping then the yarn is worth, the other is when I knit a pattern from Andrea Mowry her yarns are just to insanely expensive, but she does list a lot more yarn substitutions that are more affordable, I found the website yarn sub very helpful as well, if a yarn is no longer available,
More and more designers are including optional yarn suggestions, which I really appreciate. Yarnsub is definitely super helpful for getting a close match, but availability is often an issue 😋
This is probably the best explanation for yarn substitutions that I’ve seen. I’m a crocheter/tunisianer and this applies to me. Wish I had seen this awhile ago, before some projects I made. Thanks for the info!
I found the yarn sub site a few years ago when I was making stuffed animals for my grandkids. I found a pattern for a fuzzy little dog pattern, but the yarn was discontinued. I purchased a yarn I THOUGHT would work and it was a disaster. I then emailed the pattern maker (from England) and she couldn't be nicer. She explained to me that the yarn I bought was a different weight and yards than the pattern called for. Then she gave me a pattern of hers that would work for that yarn. I then purchased the correct yarn for fuzzy dog and made it. 😁
This was super helpful to understand all the considerations when substituting!! Thank you! Your previous videos have also been very helpful to me as an intermediate knitter.
Thank you for the information! I am a beginner crocheter (I don't knit). However, several of your 'tips' certainty apply to crocheting. You have saved me a lot of pain in my new hobby!
This is a great video! I thought I was fairly knowledgeable about yarn substitution (after 2 disastrous projects, I've tried to be very careful) but this taught me a couple of things and the discussion of the Love Note sweater was very interesting.
Thank you for the information and you are so right. Last year i bought a magazine with a beautifull patern that i wanted to make but it was knit with rowan yarn. 11 bolls because is was a collourwork sweater. It took me a week of thinking, looking for other yarn but finally i went for the rowan. I'm so glad i did this because it is my most worn item. So whenever i can i go for the yarn that the patern says because it pays back.
Thank you so much for this video! This is the part of knitting I have always struggled the most with and your detailed tips are going to be a great help!
Yarn Sub is slightly helpful in choosing a yarn of similar construction to that used in the original pattern. But the problem for us in the southern hemisphere, a lot of the the yarns used by the designer is unavailable in Australia or NZ.
Holy moly, I wish I had had this information when I started my current project. The yarn I chose is wrong in so many ways. I am finished the body of the sweater and all the "wrongness" is showing up in spades. I am at the point where I have decisions to make: do I soldier on knowing it is not what I want, do I rip a bunch out and try to fix the worst of the fit issues, or do I abandon ship and start over. I am grateful to find your video even at this late stage in my project because I know this information will help with future projects. Thanks!
That’s always a tough call. I often find the hardest option is the best one - bite the bullet and start over. However, if you think it has a chance for redemption with partial frogging and reworking, you could start there. Good luck! 🤞
I have binged some of your videos and I want to thank you for how to swatch and the running thread thing. I have just swatched (& washed) a 4ply wool nylon yarn by Schoppel, it's a Zauberball called Charisma... a lovely dark red to black variegated yarn. I love the colour and I want to use it to knit a Sirdar cardigan no C6223. My properly treated swatch matched their suggested tension but I wanted your thoughts on whether this sock yarn would work for this pattern. It's a crisp finish so the cables will be nicely defined, but I wanted your opinion before I buy such an expensive yarn
Thanks for watching so many videos! I've checked out the two yarns and while they are not entirely interchangeable - the Zauberball is a smidge thinner than the Sirdar 4 ply and it's a single instead of a plied yarn - as long as you have swatched (which you have) and are happy with the fabric (which you are) then I'd say you are good to go! That gradient is going to make a very pretty sweater 😍

Good sweater for the Arctic, maybe? So much good info. Not sexy but necessary for a good project. Thank you!
Ha ha! Good idea. If I ever travel to the Arctic, I'll bring it along. 😋

Well, dang. I hadn’t turned my mind to yarn availability in your part of the world. I’ll keep that in mind for future videos 😊
hi i enjoyed watching you i am a new knitter i have no small yarn shops near me
Awesome information thank you for all the tips.
My pleasure!
Alpaca is out for me. I live in the southern United States. We just don't get cold enough for something like that.
I keep coming back to this video. I’m not good at knowing what has good drape or stitch definition. Thanks!
Happy to help!

What is the name of the blue, cabled, v-necked sweater that was the example of your gristier yarn?
It’s called Grace Notes by Joji Locatelli 😊
Are there charts that list durability and warmth of different fibers?
Good question! I’ll bet there are somewhere. I’ll have to ask Google 😋
