So I think it was a "Let's hope we can shut it down instead of destroying it" because the second option would either be more expensive, or more impactful to the world than needed
I always forget how devastating and nightmarish the Omnic Crisis was. For a game with such a bubbly and lively vibe, it sure does do a good job at hiding Mass systematic genocide and an extinction event.
I got the book myself. Loved all the lore we got about the world of Overwatch, as well as diving into its character’s backstory and the timeline before and after the Omnic Crisis.
I’m now convinced. That new hero in the tank pool from Blizcon is almost definitely Wildebeast. He comes just before Winston in the selection screen, which lines up when you sort him into the existing ranks alphabetically. That’s a cool tease.
there's a handful of video game worlds that I just love and will try and learn every little fact about and Overwatch is near to the top of the list. Learning that the first crisis lasted 2 years and in that time 1 billion people died not only helps the player understand the destruction and why it was such a big deal but also why everyone was so scared of bastion when he was introduced to everyone.
It's an awesome world and I'm glad they are filling it out a bit! It's a real impact that. Totally explains the reaction of everyone who sees bastion or indeed, some of the depths of anti omnic/robot feeling..
Looking forward to the full book breakdown! I am also shocked to learn in such a short time Anubis took out such a huge portion of humanity... it is surprising they kept Anubis online in containment after all of this, instead of deactivating it.

see the new lore about Anubis just confirms what ive been telling people about ramatra. he doesnt hate all humans nor does he want all of them to die. he just wants radicals liberation and equal rights for his people. if he wanted all humans to die he would have been on the side of Anubis. which makes sense why he was so angry at pharah for her assumption.
Yeah Ram doesn't necessarily hate all humanity - but he will do what he feels needs to be done to preserve Omnic sentience and life. Be interesting to see what the clamps on the omnic heads from Invasion are!

The Xibalba program adds more to the speculation surrounding Sombra. Did she perhaps uncover a remnant of Xibalba? For those that don't know, Xibalba is essentially the Mayan underworld. There's certainly a lot of death motifs surrounding Sombra, huh? And that connection to energy and power sources. There's a lot to theorize here.
It would interesting if the ai was just neutral or at least want to control humans rather than kill them. It would such a good grey area character where they are a lessor evil.
I remember in Sombra’s origin video that she was discovered by something that forced her into hiding and upgrade her tech. Perhaps Xibalba was the one that discovered her and tried to eliminate Sombra because of how her hacking could exposed its hidden plans.
Rein truly became a real soldier. Not mindlessly following orders just because you were told to. He was able to think for himself and made the choices he felt was best, despite him getting shit on for it. He didnt fall and stay in the trap of becoming the mindless miltary dog whos only function and purpose is to follow the barked out orders of his higher ups. He made one of the hardest decisions for a soldier to make, thinking for himself and deciding what is right , wrong and what the best course of action is. The best soldiers arent the ones that will follow orders blindy even if it meant their demise. The best soldiers know and are trained to think for themselves and not be reliant on orders and directions to do what nees to be done or what is the best decision to make/ line of action to take. Rein deserved better. Brig knew that. But Rein didnt care. He just wanted to do what he felt was Right.
I have a theory, In Sombra's origin story, she said she got caught, and the animatic had shown a symbol of an eye. Now in the short story Lucky Man featuring Sombra and Soldier 76, They find a CD with the same eye logo as when Sombra got caught and that story is about those two working together to find some evidence of what really went down at the Swiss headquarters. What if this is Hive Mind, it would make sense for her to take revenge on overwatch for interrupting her in Paraguay and Reaper would have known if the Swiss headquarters was Talon so Talon is out of the question.

She had experience dealing with this and was only one who can lived to tell somewhat of a tale. (Not confirming if her team was KIA or MIA) Overwatch had such a negative reputation that South Korean government made the MEKA group to stand up and take OW’s place. Taking the D.Va’s comic, in the bunch. The leader of MEKA later allowed Hana to transfer to OW, while the rest of the team stayed in Busan/ Korea so they can have a connection to OW. Before OW2, we didn’t really have that much information besides them targeting Korea specifically? Could The Gwishin Target other Asian countries? Would love to see DVa mention that or somewhat extra lore.
I believe most, if not all of D.VA’s team were simply out of commission because the Gwishin had destroyed or wrecked their MEKA’s beyond repair, with any injuries likely only requiring hospitalization as far as we know since before the events of D.VA’s video. As for the Gwishin’s reasoning for constantly targeting Korea, it’s either following some constructed plan by the god AIs to attack the place as a strategic staging ground to attack and set up a base for further expansion and conquering of the rest of the region, if not the continent, or perhaps the Korean government in the world of Overwatch were hiding something that the Gwishin saw as an item of high importance and was perhaps the very reason the Korean government didn’t want Overwatch’s involvement fearing they would discover it as the reason for the attacks and expose them
Cheers for stopping by! Yeah there's a definite element of Korea wanting to go it alone or not have OW involved. Morrison and OW did invest elsewhere in the region when Korea said no to a permanent Busan Overwatch facility. And from these multiple attacks eventually came MEKA indeed!
Another thing i would've added: the other 6 ecopoints. Samoa geothermal, Osa reptiles and antifungals, Zealandia healing water and air, Monterey helping sealife, Tarapoto for Amazonian ecosystems, and Connemara for bogs/swamps. Also how Macaria protected her people.
So happy to see you still making lore videos after all these years. I have enjoyed the game since release (leaving aside some of the decisions made by upper management), but it was the lore and characters that made me fall in love with it in the first place. I particularly love Omnic lore so it's very interesting to hear about the God AIs.
I want to point out with the SEP info we got there's a loose end created by Victoria wishing she could get data about if any of the enhanced soldiers were able to pass down their abilities to their kids and interestingly enough Reyes does have a son and his name is still unknown to us. Sounds like Reyes Jr might be a major character Soon™️
For sure - particularly as the book says the list of most/any soldier enhancement graduates bar Morrison and Reyes isn't available to them or is classified still...easily room for more SEP enhanced people in future!
If this son does have these inherited strengths, he probably won't have the same abilities as Reaper, since those only happened later on and weren't part of the super soldier project.
I thought the last one was pretty clearly explained in the genesis animations, I really liked the idea that the crisis started with a paperclip problem, and the omnics got conciousness only later on
Something I feel people don't tall about enough is that the reality Overwatch lives in, and ours, is slowly becoming very real with the rise of AI and how advanced it's becoming. It's all very uncanny.

One thing that I quickly pieced together, however, and that I'd like to get a bit of detail on (since I don't have access to the book, and I'm relatively new to viewing Overwatch's lore), is that the 4 main(?) god AI that were mentioned, are all correlated to gods/deities/locations involving death and the underworld; is there particularly any info on that? I'd like to know the approach behind this. Hoping this can be answered! Loved the vid!
Glad you enjoyed and thanks for watching Jay! These were the 4 that the book says were formally declassified and acknowledged by host governments. There was UN oversight for these larger ones that required international co-operation/supervision, so perhaps this is where the naming convention came from? Either way - will definitely do a little follow up video on god programs!
It’s rather fitting that the god AIs were all about death and destruction for creating the Omnic crisis, turning and creating Omnics into war machines while Aurora gave them true sentience, life.
According to the book - at least those who made Anubis overtly chose the name to be ironic regarding its purpose. The 4 core God Programs all sort of fit this pattern imo :)
i was only familliar with anubis before the book and i already thought it was a weird thing to call a supposedly benevolent god ai before it sets about destroying humanity, but the others also being named after death or underworld related figures relevant to their area (barring the US, which is given a pretty obscure greek one) raises questions. Perhaps it was a convention for naming from UN oversight that these larger AIs had - there are perhaps more, these are just 4 that are discussed in the book ('declassified by their host governments' in canon) :)
@Hammeh Honestly loving how they dive into the technology of the time and the science behind it. Particularly how important Sigma's work was to the widespread use of sustainable energies. It makes me wonder if Talon hope to stabilise him in the hopes of actually achieving some new sort of technology or power source. I actually wondered if Moira and Sigma were behind the advanced Null Trooper energy sources. Since the medusa looking robots seemed to be powered by some sort of high tech sludge 😅. I think it is nice that the setting just expands upon our future in a fantastical but grounded manner

Oh wow when you mentioned Hivemind my face lit up in excitement! I sadly decided to skip on the new Ow-Lore and thhe books because after the hot mess they have released (especially with Reapers shortstory...oh don't let me get started on that hot mess of a carcrash) I didn't got much hope of some OG-lore that feels like it came out of Chu's secret note-stash of unreleased lore he must be hiding underneath his bed. But funnily Chu tweeted during the "Pve mission"-release that they started using some of his actually old ideas he pitched when Ow1 was in development. So hivemind being mentioned especially as a little nodge to the old OG-hardcore fans that remember the old Ow conceptart-pitch Im so happy that they referenced her instead of pretending that the cool laser-beam-spider mommy didn't exist at all! Honestly made my day. Not sure if this was actually the intended backgroundstory of Reinhardt Chu cooked up back in the days for him but it honestly feels like some OG stuff!❤
I think the robo Ana Angle would have been cool for widow's dead husband. Imagine a robot that remembers widow haunting her but he is how her husband used to be.
We've actually had a pretty chunky serving recently with Invasion and what was in the PVE, the Genesis Shorts, and now Overwatch: Declassified. My main thought is whether it continues at this pace - next year there's some new short stories confirmed in the pipeline from book pre-orders, so we'll see!
that last part about anubis reminded me of how GLaDOS got control over the facility back after the scientists put on the modules on her (iirc?) by asking for kittens and neurotoxin to do experiments with...which...the scientists didn't question yyyyyeaaaaaa

I need to know what was the first and second soldier. They must have dealt with a lot of unethical test and I want them to be a super hero playable character .
Technically you could see Genji or Illari as exactly that. Genji was literally reborn as a cyborg from the brink of death and Illari was metaphorically reborn as a warrior of the sun and as powers associated with light and fire much like the mythical bird

Considering how bad the first omnic crisis was. over a billion deaths. I can see now how the governemnt and other people were influenced and making them not care as much of the fucked up things they were doing in the pursuit to fight back against the omnic crisis, and the morally questionalble actions many people made and experiments that were done all to ensure that a crisis like that/on that big a scale would never happen again. It makes sense to me that some people would be traumatized form the first omnic crisis so much, that they were completely fine experimenting on, torturing, and even killing people, because to them, those lives, even tho many, felt few and not as important as securing and ensuring the safety and well being of the whole world/majority of the world.

Is it just me or is the sound bad? I can barely hear him on some things then it gets loud. All the sounds that are not his voice are very loud especially after turning it up to hear his voice.
Now I love new lore even more than the next guy but isn't it a completely new team of writers? The management and vision has totally changed, I would've wanted to see the full story from people like Michael Chu. Now they have to incorporate stupid characters and plot points like Illari and the fact that certain omnics aren't alive and others are. And more than that, promote their stupid battle pass and story mode for the sole purpose of making money

No, they rotate them and have done for a while. Overwatch 2 got rid of many old ones.

Something I feel people don't tall about enough is that the reality Overwatch lives in, and ours, is slowly becoming very real with the rise of AI and how advanced it's becoming. It's all very uncanny.

One thing that I quickly pieced together, however, and that I'd like to get a bit of detail on (since I don't have access to the book, and I'm relatively new to viewing Overwatch's lore), is that the 4 main(?) god AI that were mentioned, are all correlated to gods/deities/locations involving death and the underworld; is there particularly any info on that? I'd like to know the approach behind this.

There was UN oversight for these larger ones that required international co-operation/supervision, so perhaps this is where the naming convention came from? Either way - will definitely do a little follow up video on god programs!
It’s rather fitting that the god AIs were all about death and destruction for creating the Omnic crisis, turning and creating Omnics into war machines while Aurora gave them true sentience, life.
According to the book - at least those who made Anubis overtly chose the name to be ironic regarding its purpose. The 4 core God Programs all sort of fit this pattern imo :)
I love the how all the god AI are god or goddesses of death, but I don't know why the people who made them would name them as such
i was only familliar with anubis before the book and i already thought it was a weird thing to call a supposedly benevolent god ai before it sets about destroying humanity, but the others also being named after death or underworld related figures relevant to their area (barring the US, which is given a pretty obscure greek one) raises questions.

Perhaps it was a convention for naming from UN oversight that these larger AIs had - there are perhaps more, these are just 4 that are discussed in the book ('declassified by their host governments' in canon) :)

@Hammeh Honestly loving how they dive into the technology of the time and the science behind it. Particularly how important Sigma's work was to the widespread use of sustainable energies. It makes me wonder if Talon hope to stabilise him in the hopes of actually achieving some new sort of technology or power source. I actually wondered if Moira and Sigma were behind the advanced Null Trooper energy sources. Since the medusa looking robots seemed to be powered by some sort of high tech sludge 😅.
I think it is nice that the setting just expands upon our future in a fantastical but grounded manner
I was excited to get the ebook version of this book but they cancelled it 😢 It's exciting to see more overwatch lore though always

the Reyes and Morrison Lore is straight from Halo even having the scientist be a woman and having started the experiments before the Omnic crisis even began and by coincidence it just so happened her research became invaluable to the protection of earth

I sadly decided to skip on the new Ow-Lore and thhe books because after the hot mess they have released (especially with Reapers shortstory...oh don't let me get started on that hot mess of a carcrash) I didn't got much hope of some OG-lore that feels like it came out of Chu's secret note-stash of unreleased lore he must be hiding underneath his bed.
But funnily Chu tweeted during the "Pve mission"-release that they started using some of his actually old ideas he pitched when Ow1 was in development.
So hivemind being mentioned especially as a little nodge to the old OG-hardcore fans that remember the old Ow conceptart-pitch Im so happy that they referenced her instead of pretending that the cool laser-beam-spider mommy didn't exist at all!

I think the robo Ana Angle would have been cool for widow's dead husband. Imagine a robot that remembers widow haunting her but he is how her husband used to be.

We've actually had a pretty chunky serving recently with Invasion and what was in the PVE, the Genesis Shorts, and now Overwatch: Declassified. My main thought is whether it continues at this pace - next year there's some new short stories confirmed in the pipeline from book pre-orders, so we'll see!

Technically you could see Genji or Illari as exactly that. Genji was literally reborn as a cyborg from the brink of death and Illari was metaphorically reborn as a warrior of the sun and as powers associated with light and fire much like the mythical bird

Not all heroes have an association with Overwatch. Eg - Junker Queen has none and a few others too. Ana passed through Junkertown at one point if voice lines are to be believed :)

Considering how bad the first omnic crisis was. over a billion deaths. I can see now how the governemnt and other people were influenced and making them not care as much of the fucked up things they were doing in the pursuit to fight back against the omnic crisis, and the morally questionalble actions many people made and experiments that were done all to ensure that a crisis like that/on that big a scale would never happen again. It makes sense to me that some people would be traumatized form the first omnic crisis so much, that they were completely fine experimenting on, torturing, and even killing people, because to them, those lives, even tho many, felt few and not as important as securing and ensuring the safety and well being of the whole world/majority of the world.
Yu kno, now I wonder if Anubis DIES reawaken and takes over all of Rammatras people, that wud be a NICE team up with everyone!!

Now I love new lore even more than the next guy but isn't it a completely new team of writers? The management and vision has totally changed, I would've wanted to see the full story from people like Michael Chu. Now they have to incorporate stupid characters and plot points like Illari and the fact that certain omnics aren't alive and others are. And more than that, promote their stupid battle pass and story mode for the sole purpose of making money
