I don't believe Ivanchuk managed a plus score versus Kasparov. However, Boris Gulko did achieve this. Kramnik would also have been close. Depends how one determines which were Kasparov's prime years and, I suppose, whether one takes account of games played at non-classical time controls.
The way I see it, he can't make a significant counterattack down 2 pawns and with his Queen and Rook tied down like that. Also, he's not going to lose much rating against Magnus.
@@mikeg2538not even close to a tie. Magnus is up two pawns with a past pawn and and really strong knight outpost. The evaluation shows it and at this level it’s an easy conversion for a win for Magnus.

After the white rook comes to the D file black is completely overloaded and down two pawns. Black knight cannot counter because of the check forking the rook
Do players get to choose or bring their own pieces? It would appear that some of the black pieces are a bit smaller. Check out the size of the pawn spheres at the top. The rooks of each color also appear different…or is this some illusion?🧐
Funny you should mention that, I thought the same thing with two of Magnus' pawns early in the game when they lined up (from the camera) the front one (to us) looked way out of proportion and big topped - probably just a glitch in the Matrix dude ;)
Chucky's been doing this the past couple years, when he decides there's nothing to fight for he resigns even in a drawn position. Not saying this game is one of those but he could've fought for it. Happens when you get older, you say "screw it" more often, just not worth the energy
The problem with that theory is; If you take lots of risks in an attempt to prosper and get burned multiple times, you'll find out real fast that fancy one liner isn't worth XXIT!

I think he resigned because because he had no favorable positions or trades to make along with Magnus’s pawn being so close to the other side threatening another Queen Probably saw that he’d run out of useful moves in a drawn out game
Because the position is lost Ivasnchuk knew it Not only two pawns down but black pieces got not much to They are not amateurs can' t you see ? Magnus is an impecable chess player almost unbeatable on endings

Ok im a non chess player. Just wanna know why do they put down their geads like their in a lot of stress? Or are they thinking too hard? Also why do they write each other moves? Do they not remember?
I'm a newbie chess player and my answer might be wrong, cmiiw. They're thinking hard, predicting opponents next move and thinking what they're going do about it. They basically have this imagination match in their heads. And the hand to support their head gives a little comfort I think. And it's to keep tradition alive why they write down their moves. Ofc they digitally record their games.
Impossible to remember each move of each game, although players like Magnus have excellent recollection. They wrote the moves to keep a record of the game so it can be preserved and studied by everyone.
Tradition. And not all tournaments have the latest equipment and cameras to record moves. They need to write the moves to preserve the games for replication and study.
it is said the only player Kasparov feared was Ivanchuk . . . then look what Magnus did to Ivanchuk in this game, domination from the beginning to the end, Magnus was eating Ivanchuk for breakfast, and his face was relaxed all the time
It is a classical time control. Also, not all tournaments have the latest equipment and cameras to record moves. They need to write the moves to preserve the games for replication and study.

it's not exactly clear to me why Chucky resign here on Queen E4, whats the winning line for magnus?
rook d7
Agadmator was first person that introduced me to Ivanchuck. “Chucky” can be a problem for any GM.
Also, eating the pawn on E4 instead of checking the queen would have open the game for him.

Each of them writes both of their moves to have a good accounting of the match, and to allow replication and study.
