Santa Train vs. idiots ignoring crossing signal - Canton, IL 12/8/12

  • On December 8th 2012, the Keokuk Junction Railway operated their annual Santa Train between Mapleton and Smithfield, IL. In downtown Canton, Illinois, I set up my camera at the 5th Avenue grade crossing to watch the train pull in. This crossing features a set of grade crossing flashers - no gates. Well, as you will see, the train approaches, the lights and bells come on, and car after car (including a semi) IGNORE the warning devices! Thank goodness this was a slow train, otherwise it could have been messy. Nevertheless, no matter how fast or slow a train appears to be going, when the crossing signals start, YOU STOP! Simple as that!

I used to help my friend from high school pick up bodies. No, we weren't experimenting...his family owned a funeral home in the small town I grew up in. When there was a death in the county they got the call. He would often call me to come help cause people are heavy, alive or dead. But I agree with Fireman Joe - Thank you for your service - the worst was a guy got run over by a train. We were picking up pieces, trying to figure out if we had enough for the funeral home to put back together, relatively speaking. Never did find his right hand. Figured a dog probably found it. We walked all the way from Locust to this spot where this video was shot because he wanted to see where it was filmed. He thought it was really neat to see where it was filmed. Then he got tired so we stopped to buy drinks at Aldi on the way back. Thanks for this bonding experience! It was hot, and fun.

I used to work the rail yards in Canton and the idiots race the crossings all the time. Once, coupling a string of cars by the old Harvester plant at dusk, a station wagon raced to make the crossing with the train in motion. It scared me as it was going to be close. The car had more children in it than one woman could have of her own. With the rail car occupying the crossing the station wagon full of kids just streaked by. I guess time was more important than the lives of hers and other's kids. The chances we take to cut corners!

Big diesel engines are all about torque, not horsepower. Horsepower is for Corvettes. A 500hp 3406 is usually around the 1800lb-ft torque range.

The crossing controller started flashing the lights a full 60 seconds before the train arrived at the crossing. A properly designed crossing will give 30 seconds warning. The FRA requires 22 seconds minimum. This excessive warning time of 60 seconds only encourages drivers to go through the flashing lights due to the slow speed and long distance from the street.

    • @MrRCGNL
      @MrRCGNL 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@KC Rocket: Fully agree, the overload of signals, especially the accoustic one like blowing the horn every 2 secs or so creates a situation the car drivers don't 'hear' the anymore.
Over here (Europe) trains only use their horn in case of danger and on specific, dangerous, loctaions. Ans a normal RR xing is not marked as dangerous.

I put safety first, no matter who behind me gets irritated. I would rather be an asshole than be dead.
What those are, are "permissive" railroad crossings, that are these permissive left turn signals, where you may proceed after you stop if you get through before the train. That is part of all this bullshit about keeping traffic flowing to reduce emissions
I want to get where I am going, so I wait for the red lights to go off, even at permissive railroad crossing, and I don't give a shit about emissions that my car, and other cars behind me are putting out, and give a shit how many drivers behind get irritated.

Drivers have almost no common sense involving trains. I see people driving around lowered crossing arms all the time. I even read of a railroad being sued after a guy got hit while driving around the crossing arms. The lawyers argued that the arms were not long enough to stop cars from driving around them.

I was just shocked how vehicle drivers and even that semi ignored the warning devices and the loud train honking and still crossed the train tracks. They were very lucky that the train was going so slow. I heard of a train wreck where the train was going 80 mile per hour. There wouldn't have been time for the vehicles to cross or for the train to stop.

After the crossing downstream from where the camera man was set up was activated when the annual Santa Claus train made its trek when those have ignored the crossing without gates when those think their life would be at risk even if they are a bit late as it would be pale in comparison to being hit by a train.

Many years ago, My X and I had gone out for a movie and we had the daughter of a friend watch my two kids. When we got home, I took her home. Where her family lived, you needed to cross a set of tracks. It was dark and the crossing didn't have signal/gates. As I got close to the tracks I could see the headlamp of the train and also could hear the horn. But I could not judge distance nor how fast that train was going. I hesitated just a second and gunned it. My Guess I missed getting hit by no more than a car length or two. It was close enough to rock my car. It scared her and it scared the hell out of me. I apologized as much as I could. Like I said it was many years ago. I never did that again.

While I dont think anyone was in danger by crossing, they are stupid for ignoring the flashing red lights. Not all crossings can have gates as they do cost a lot of money and as long as its a lite crossing, common sense should prevail. In rural areas, most crossings only have the cross bucks with no lights. THAT means you stop, look and Live. Again, people have to be responsible for their actions or choices, like trying to beat a train at a crossing. Not good choice in my opinion.

There is a sideroad close to a train station near our house and when a train is inbound, chances are you wait for 45 minutes due to the gates and that it is very close to the station. I think they ought to be removed so people can actually drive over the track instead of wait for the gates to go up.

At my location, if there are no stop arms at a railway crossing and the lights are flashing to indicate that a train is coming, it is legal to cross the tracks as long as it is safe to do so and you come to a complete stop before the crossing before proceeding.

Where’s the crossing gate, maybe that would’ve helped the vehicle’s stop. This video shows how careless people are and don’t pay attention.

Well this is a short line railroad and who knows who it belonged to before they bought it. Also as an actual RR conductor i can tell you that as long as they have some type of crossing warning up, the F.R.A. will not penalize them. I agree with crossing arms but there are idiots out there who will still run them, that was how my first fatality occured, a couple thinking they can beat us. As the conductor, i had to step off and report it....not a pretty sight either. That's why i stated that warning but as i can see with some of the comments (old and new) some people always have something ignorant to say.
