Once, coupling a string of cars by the old Harvester plant at dusk, a station wagon raced to make the crossing with the train in motion. It scared me as it was going to be close. I guess time was more important than the lives of hers and other's kids. The chances we take to cut corners!

When I used to drive in Mountain View, CA I would be behind drivers that parked right on the CalTrain tracks when caught by a red light. I never saw a train approach at those times, but it made me wonder what those drivers were thinking.
Properly timed signals should activate about 25 seconds before the train arrives, and is adjusted based on the speed of the train in modern equipment. These lights were on for way too long, and the local residents probably know that.
At my location, if there are no stop arms at a railway crossing and the lights are flashing to indicate that a train is coming, it is legal to cross the tracks as long as it is safe to do so and you come to a complete stop before the crossing before proceeding.
The crossing controller started flashing the lights a full 60 seconds before the train arrived at the crossing. A properly designed crossing will give 30 seconds warning. The FRA requires 22 seconds minimum. This excessive warning time of 60 seconds only encourages drivers to go through the flashing lights due to the slow speed and long distance from the street.
@KC Rocket: Fully agree, the overload of signals, especially the accoustic one like blowing the horn every 2 secs or so creates a situation the car drivers don't 'hear' the anymore. Over here (Europe) trains only use their horn in case of danger and on specific, dangerous, loctaions. Ans a normal RR xing is not marked as dangerous.

Hi, i am from Romania (Europe), why in America they ignore always the signals? In Romania they don't ignore them because the police is watching. Maybe they think the waiting is too long or maybe they think the train comes really slowly??? In Romania they stop at the signals and wait for the train to pass..in your country many cars and trucks ignore signals...this is not good!
It's very stupid and dangerous a road without lifting barriers and traffic lamp to regulate a cars passage..!!! In my country you will never find a railroad crossing without this safety solution..! When the train pass the barriers are down and you can't pass..!! Simply safety to prevent uman stupidity..!!!
Foolish people, for sure. However, there is something else about this video which is very interesting. That's the timing of the lights versus when the train enters the crossing. Looking at the video, the lights start at 0.58 into the video. The train actually enters the crossing at 2:03. Which is 65 seconds later. I know that doesn't sound like much, but (if my memory serves me correctly, most gates and signals are timed for a 30 second period until the train enters the crossing. This may be why the locals have become somewhat careless at this grade crossing. In no way would I ever condone ignoring those signals, but the poor timing may be a point of contention if an incident occurred and this all went to court. Regardless, Stop, Look and Listen!!! The life you save may be your own!
I agree with you that can very well be the problem and if they don't install crossing gates at that crossing they should then shorten the interval between activation and when the crossing system times out. From personal experience I have found that it varies a little but normally a crossing system times out anywhere between 15 and 30 seconds after activation and only remains active longer when a train is occupying the crossing.
Weldy Media Productions There is a lot of truth in what you say here. I worked in the railroad industry for over 36 years. My former employer ( A Major Class 1 Railroad) had the timing set on grade crossing to activate 30 seconds before the train entered the crossing at normal track speeds. Of course the time could be longer should there be any speed restrictions in place at a given location.
Duckman Gaming Thanks, I work at a Railway Museum and we currently have two maintained grade crossings at which we have proximity circuit activated crossing gates installed at. Even though we don't frequently run on the tracks every day we have them for reasons like what was shown in this video.
There is a railroad crossing in wood dale,Illinois that has a camera. If the lights are activated and the gate is going down or up the camera will take a picture and send you a fine by mail! They should do that at most crossings i think!
***** I am not sure how it works exactly, but I seen 3 cars being ticketed because they start proceeding after the gate was half way opened and saw the flash go off 3 times!
That 18 wheeler that crossed after the railroad crossing lights came on. That's why you always see trains hitting semis. Better to be a few minutes late on your scheduled route than not make it at all.
You people are so silly, THE TRAIN WAS LITERALLY HALF A MILE AWAY! AND GOING AT A VERY SLOW SPEED! the truck driver literally slowed down and looked to determine if it was still safe to cross. and likely the truck driver didn't hear the horn at the crossing he was at which meant there is obviously no train there yet.
When the rr crossing lights come on you're supposed to stop, especially someone driving a tractor trailer. And the train was maybe a block away when the lights were activated but definitely not half a mile. So you're the one that's silly.
Well by rights, those who continued over the tracks AFTER the crossing lights were activated, broke the law. The law clearly states that when lights at a railroad crossing is activated ALL MOTORIST MUST STOP! I know its a pain in the ass at times, but would you rather be delayed for a few minutes or would you rather be delayed forever, by being run over by a train? To me, that's a no brain'er cos I would rather be delayed by a few minutes. But as shown in this video by those who continued across after the lights were activated, it just goes to show that you can't fix STUPID!
After the crossing downstream from where the camera man was set up was activated when the annual Santa Claus train made its trek when those have ignored the crossing without gates when those think their life would be at risk even if they are a bit late as it would be pale in comparison to being hit by a train.
I feel bad for the people living near these tracks. Constantly having to hear train whistles day and night would be enough for me to move back in with mom lol
@david toler You must not be from the trucking world. 500 is a big hammer. I've driven 80k with a 350hp 3406 and that's all the power you need for flatter routes. Big diesel engines are all about torque, not horsepower. Horsepower is for Corvettes. A 500hp 3406 is usually around the 1800lb-ft torque range.
The normal timing from start of signal to the train reaching the intersection is 20 seconds. Newer signal systems take into account the speed of the train. This is probably an older system where the sensor is a fixed distance from the crossing
It took about 65 seconds from the start of the warning device to the time the train reached the crossing. Looks like people know they have more time than normal. One of these days, they'll get caught with their pants down and get nailed.
Well this is a short line railroad and who knows who it belonged to before they bought it. Also as an actual RR conductor i can tell you that as long as they have some type of crossing warning up, the F.R.A. will not penalize them. I agree with crossing arms but there are idiots out there who will still run them, that was how my first fatality occured, a couple thinking they can beat us. As the conductor, i had to step off and report it....not a pretty sight either. That's why i stated that warning but as i can see with some of the comments (old and new) some people always have something ignorant to say.
Rick te Kronnie Its going slow because there is no crossing barriers and people like you who love to test Darwinism will chance it no mater how fast he is going.
So many oblivious drivers nowadays it makes me wonder how in the hell they are getting their license. We are going to have to start requiring a driver's test every year.
can you people just think this through for a minute? the train is far away and going extremely slow some of the drivers stopped and peek to determine if they had enough time to cross and proceeded to pass the tracks since it was still safe to go across judging by the speed of the train and the distance it was at.
It’s an excursion train. They probably keep them always coupled because it looks cool and so the train can run both directions without having to turn the locomotives. They just uncouple and run around on a siding to the other end when they have to go back.
While I dont think anyone was in danger by crossing, they are stupid for ignoring the flashing red lights. Not all crossings can have gates as they do cost a lot of money and as long as its a lite crossing, common sense should prevail. In rural areas, most crossings only have the cross bucks with no lights. THAT means you stop, look and Live. Again, people have to be responsible for their actions or choices, like trying to beat a train at a crossing. Not good choice in my opinion.
There is a sideroad close to a train station near our house and when a train is inbound, chances are you wait for 45 minutes due to the gates and that it is very close to the station. I think they ought to be removed so people can actually drive over the track instead of wait for the gates to go up.
Nah the train was going slow and was far away. He had plenty of time, they run on a schedule if he sat there and waited he would be late for no reason at all as he was safe to go.
Yeah, what if the train that was 50 or so seconds away suddenly sped up and hit him (sarcasm).... foamers like to get buttmad about people going through crossings but half the time theyll fly through stop signs if it means getting to chase their trains or trespass etc lol
what Helps me as A Railfan in Preventing Idiot's from doing this is to get a photo of the front of the front of the car to where you have the License Plate Number & going straight to the Police Department & telling the Officer Or Dispatch & show them The Photo's with the License Plate Number in it. The train outfits are as guilty as anyone of creating this dangerous atmosphere.
Those cars passing by while the train is coming is dangerous and confusing, and although it didn't cause an accident, still remember "LOOK, LISTEN & LIVE!"
the train was going as slow as a old lady that's why nobody took the warning seriously until the train got very close to the crossing. i don't get why people have to overreact as if the cars were crossing the tracks as if a 70 mph train was coming after the signals activated?
It’s crazy how many people are so impatient! Where I go to video trains, they are constantly going around the gates. Last year i032 struck a cement truck! 😞
Thank God that this video was uneventful. Even though the train was a slow mover- lights flashing- a whole lot of STUPID was happening. Love the old covered wagons (locomotives)
Train: (Blows whistle several times) Crossing: (waits till the train is super close by to actually activate but dosn’t even have lowering boom arms) Drivers: “It’s free Real estate”
that's what they did stop look listen and live and proceeding when the lights flash and bell rings you may stop and peek to determine if you still have time to cross depending on how far the train is and if it appears to be moving quickly or not. you can't proceed in life if your DEAD! so that's why these motorist proceed after stopping, looking, and listening and proceeded on with their lives instead of waiting for no reason because of a stupid law.
Haha, "Thank goodness this was a slow train, otherwise it could have been messy." The "high quality" of the tracks doesn't allow any train to go faster than this one
One time this happened to me...I was on my bike with my mom behind me. I go over the train tracks and I see a big huge train light in the distance. I quickly peddle faster and screamed train behind me at my mom. Half a mile down the road the railroad crossings went off. Me and my mom where at the stop light watching it go by. It could have been going 50 miles an hour but luckily it was going about 5-10 miles per hour. Till this day it haunts me. This is why you always look for trains!!
yep the red and white sign is a yield sign. but the grass and shrubbary grows so tall you would never even see the train coming unless you came to a complete stop rolled down your window turned your music off and listened. its 100% dangerous and someone already got hit a year or 2 back at like 3 in the morning. though it is a less traveled track and im pretty sure the speed is limited to 30MPH or less its still fucking scary some times to cross it.
***** still scary as fuck and trains have hit cars a few times because of it. there are a few houses near the tracks so it would be extremely easy to get powered lights and a gate.

I want to get where I am going, so I wait for the red lights to go off, even at permissive railroad crossing, and I don't give a shit about emissions that my car, and other cars behind me are putting out, and give a shit how many drivers behind get irritated.

It's stupid. I've seen POLICE ignore signals.
The train was travelling astronomically slow.

Because Americans have a very entitled mind set. These same people would sue the railroad if they got hit even though they were in the wrong..
Alex Nedelcu You make a very good point. We need some of that over here.
What people don't realize is, is that the train ALWAYS has the right of way.

Weldy Media Productions I also agree with you on this. There should be crossing gates. Every car that passed through was idiotic.
Duckman Gaming
Thanks, I work at a Railway Museum and we currently have two maintained grade crossings at which we have proximity circuit activated crossing gates installed at. Even though we don't frequently run on the tracks every day we have them for reasons like what was shown in this video.
Stop, Look, Listen, Live.

Yes better safe than sorry
Better late than dead.
@@MrCancer1965 Nope.

Not a typical train. Had a caboose and someone standing on back. What speed do they normally go through at? They go 60MPH in my town.

Where’s the crossing gate, maybe that would’ve helped the vehicle’s stop. This video shows how careless people are and don’t pay attention.
This is how railroad crossing are made back then
Well this is a short line railroad and who knows who it belonged to before they bought it.
Yeah, really a life threatening situation with a train going 2mph...
Rick te Kronnie Its going slow because there is no crossing barriers and people like you who love to test Darwinism will chance it no mater how fast he is going.
+bishop51807 It's going slow because the quality of the track rates it for a maximum speed of 10 MPH.
I love that message of yours

That sounds like a pain in the butt! But yes, that would be beneficial.
can you people just think this through for a minute? the train is far away and going extremely slow some of the drivers stopped and peek to determine if they had enough time to cross and proceeded to pass the tracks since it was still safe to go across judging by the speed of the train and the distance it was at.

Why two locomotives were required to pull just one coach and a caboose?
To be safe on the rails and in case if ice on track
The locomotives are semi-permanently coupled, with their one cab each on the outer ends.
It’s an excursion train. They probably keep them always coupled because it looks cool and so the train can run both directions without having to turn the locomotives. They just uncouple and run around on a siding to the other end when they have to go back.
This is nostalgic, I watched this when I was like 4 or 5
While I dont think anyone was in danger by crossing, they are stupid for ignoring the flashing red lights.

That semi driver should get his CDL taken away.

Agree with you 100% he shouldn't be driving at all.

If people paid attention to an oncoming train there would not be a need for this video, which is jaw dropping!
Do all the trains travel this speed through here? Because it took over a minute for the train to get to the crossing.
Yes, the track speed here I believe is 10 MPH.
Then I reckon there's no reason to not move the sensor closer to the crossing.
^^EXACTLY^^ In the Spokamentro area, there are lots of places along the Trent corridor where the God Damn trains screw around and switch and back up and park on sidings, TRIGGERING NEEDLESS signals and holding people up.
