This song is about a guy from the 19th century. Back then farmers, along the Mississippi, Ohio and Missouri rivers would build large rafts after harvest and load them up with their crops, goods and wares. And they would float all the way down the river(s) to New Orleans and then they would sell all their products. They were on the 'Ol black water but not in it. It's black because at night, bodies of water appear to be black. Once he has sold everything and has some free time, he goes honky tonking in the city. Dancing with some "pretty mama". After a couple days, he would book passage on a north bound steam boat and head home with his money for his family etc. That's pretty much the song in a nutshell.
You can’t go wrong with any Doobies song especially the original line up from 71-74. The entire album The Captain and Me is a masterpiece. My favorite song of theirs is Another Lonely Park Another Sunday.
14 years old and rocking to this song when it hit the radio. Bought the Album "What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits". This band has had quite a few transformations and all of them rock. L💞ve from Canada!
Interesting fact the Doobie Brother's performed this on the 70's sitcom What's Happening Re - Run was caught illegally (bootlegging) recording the show
Since y'all like going to New Orleans, you'll recognize their love song to the city. The band had an extended stay there early in the 70s. They even named one of their albums Toulouse Street, after the street in the French Quarter. Can't go wrong with the Doobies.
They covered this song in my junior high music class to talk about the musical style. Loved it since. I live 10 minutes from the Mississippi River… Give me see-thru pool water any day.
Proud member of the class of 1974 here. We took credit for making this a hit, as it was only a B side, but every time we put a nickel in the jukebox in a bar on the Mississippi, we chose this over the A side, something called “Another Park Another Sunday.”
One of my Top Five songs. The images, the great musicianship, the lazy vibe. Just love it. One of the best songs of the 70's, or anytime, for that matter. :)
Pat Simmons- the singer and composer here, wrote this in high school! I got to jam with him in our high school “ hootenanny “! He’s the Doobie with the super long hair.
When I was little, my dad always use to take me night fishing. We would wade a river near our farm at night. The water would get up to his abdomen, but it would get up to my arm pits in some places. We would cast our bait ahead of us and let it float down while we walked along slowly reeling it back to us. We caught catfish and bass. BUT that water was sooooo dark, and you couldn't see anything. I would feel along the bottom of the river bed, sometimes really muddy, sometimes lots of gravel. My dad told me to "shuffle my feet" along the river bottom because he didn't want me to step on a snapping turtle. He said if I shuffled my feet a turtle would swim off in a bumped into it, but if I stepped on it in my bite me. My feet would bump into submerged objects like a stick or big rock... sometimes the things I bumped into would move! There were big turtles in that river. And the snakes...... the snakes... My dad had hat with a head lamp on so he could see. I stuck right beside him but I couldn't hold a flashlight in my hand as well as my fishing pole. But he would always look behind us to make sure nothing was sneaking up. All along the way we would see snakes swimming across the river up ahead of us, and sometimes we we see them swimming across behind us. Once we saw a big cottonmouth coiled up in the roots of a tree on a steep bank not more than 20 feet away from us. I was so freaking scared I never left my dad's side. We waded at least a half mile before getting out and walking back to my dads truck. But we had a nice string of fish to show for it. But damn.... wading through that dark water sure was scary when you're only 9 or 10... Every time I hear this song, I always think of night fishing with my dad.
The Doobie Brothers are an American rock band that have been around for 5 decades. They covered many genres of music over the years. They had so many great songs such as "What A Fool Believes", "Listen To The Music", "Jesus Is Just Alright", "Long Train Runnin'", "China Grove", "Takin' It To The Streets", "The Doctor", "Echoes Of Love", "You Belong To Me", "Take Me In Your Arms" etc.
I live on a lake, hot day today and was in the water but its kind of cool to jump in after sun goes down under stars, frogs and loons crooning, fish jumping around....nature man, peaceful and serene:)
I've always loved this song and actually had it on a 45 record when it was a "B" side. My second favorite song of theirs is "Toulouse Street" which has a very haunting melody. I would love to see you do a reaction to it.
I would and have many many times gone swimming in water where you can't see your feet, most places don't have things in the water that can hurt you and if it does they leave when you start splashing around... now don't get me wrong, I'm not swimming in the ocean at night, and I'm not getting in any place that had gators day or night...
In concert, they drop this set down on cables, complete with acoustic instruments, they leave the electric instruments, hop on this other stage & do a whole set with acoustic sound. This is one of the songs they do during that set. It was AWESOME!!!
When I was in highschool photography (journalism) I would have this blaring in the dark room so loud the journalism teacher would come in and tell me to turn it down, because the whole class was signing along. Another great Doobie Brothers is Listen to the Music which Home Free just released.
The song is about the Mississippi River, with lyrics likely inspired by Mark Twain's books Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer, which tell stories about rafting down the river.
Son. When you embrace the black waters of the Mississippi you don't need to worry about anything ever again. She's there any time you need her as she was long before you were ever a thing and she'll be there long after you.
I've always loved this song--one of their best and most unique vibes. Long Train Running is my other fave Doobie song--crazy funky guitar rift that just gets in your bones. Can't go wrong with the Doobies
I've seen them in concert at least 3 times. Loved this song since I first heard it in the 80's on my uncles cassette tape. Musically and vocally so good.
You can tell the Doobies had never been around a river in the south when they sang that one line. "Catfish a-jumpin'" Scuse the hell outta me, but you ain't never seen a catfish jump in your life! But then, The Doobies formed in San Jose, Ca. so it's understandable. But the lyric fit! But hell, I'd jump in that water. After dark was the only time I went skinny dipping! 😁
Mentioning them makes me remember of an old tv show called "What's Happenin" Roger, Dwayne and ReRun meet the Doobie Brothers. One of the band member says something to Roger and he says, "Which Doobie you be" Whole episode had to deal with bootlegging concerts.
When I got out of the navy I got a job as a watchman on a dredge in the Ohio river. In the middle of the night when the moon was over cast it was dark. I would get in the boat that we used to get to shore and move away from the dredge. You could barely see more than five feet away, and when you looked at the shore the firefly’s in the trees on both sides of the valley would blend into the stars because you couldn’t see the tree line and lthe water would be almost motionless. It was beautiful, it looked like there was only sky and water and it eerily quiet and peaceful. Every time I hear this song I think about being out there smoking one and relaxing.
I just went to see the Doobies on their 50th Anniversary Tour with Michael McDonald on Sunday 7/17, and it was fabulous! They wrapped up with this, then "Takin' It To the Streets" and "Listen to the Music" for the finale. Such a beautiful atmosphere represented by all walks of life! I don't thing you've checked out "Takin' It to the Streets", and you REALLY should! I highly suggest the live version Santa Barbara 1982. It's a medley with "Jesus is Just Alright". If there's anything that will make you feel that we are all one, this is it!!

Loved this song since I first put the needle in the album track. It's vibey without trying to be. Patrick Simmons manages to sing WHILE playing this difficult acoustic guitar picking.
1978, I was 14 and got my first paycheck for stuffing envelopes at the United Way. I bought 8 front row seats for the Doobies and took several friends and my brother. Tickets were 7 bucks with a 1 time processing fee of 50 cents. I got pics, my friend still has her stub and another friend grabbed lead singers cap and got to wear it for a second or two before Sims security got it back. What a great show, but you know what is the craziest part? It was the Doobie Brothers Farewell tour. lol Edit because I forgot to mention it was at the Saint Paul Civic Center.
I was in the Navy from 1967 - 1971. When you get out in the Atlantic and hit that Gulf Stream, there is a place that is 5 miles deep. I've been there. The water is so dark that the foam is purple. Just acknowledge the diversity of instruments utilized in the music of the 70's. Listen to this Fiddle tearing it UP...... And the syncopated harmonies at the end of this song.... Uter ear-gasm
Welcome aboard, youngsters! I became a fan of The Doobie Brothers, back in 1975, when I was in Jr. High School. My older brothers and sisters use to play music all the time, and I learned to like different genres, because of their expanded taste of varieties of music.
There are a lot of bayou areas where there are lots of leaves decomposing in the water and turn it the color of tea. Some folks call this "black water".
I grew up listening to them up here in canada we used to cruise around listening to that for hours my 1969 440 6 pack superbee rumble lowly a joint and a beer just cruising awesome!!!
The Doobie Brothers had so many different styles and sounds throughout their career constantly evolving and changing and improving but never outshining what came before. Because of different personality changes throughout the years they have an incredible collection of outstanding songs.
This tune is great even on Acoustic Guitar. A Band I was in had a Band Picnic & BBQ, as the Sun set I played "Black Water" on Acoustic Guitar and just finished when a Huge Brown Bear came out of the woods. The Guitarists Joe, Walter & I stood behind the Drummer who produced a 22 Pistol, When he fired a warning Shot, The Bear didn't care and we said, "We're going to need a bigger Gun." Lol. I like "Jesus is just alright," Our Band used to play "Long Train Running, China Grove & Listen to the Music." by The Doobie Brothers. Thanks, This tune brings back Band Memories.
AMAZING SONG! I’m 53 years old so I grew up listening to them and have always loved them. I have a 14 year old daughter who knows this song by heart! And my husbands from Mississippi so of course she loves this song!
The fiddle and guitar players are doing a musical movement called "Call and Response" instrumentally. Real musicians who sounded the same live as they did on the radio.
I am seeing these guys tonight at 7:30 and Michael McDonald is touring with them for their 50th Anniversary. I am stocked to see them again and for the first with Michael. It’s going to be a party in the house y’all🥰
One of my all time favorites from when I was a kid! I think it was easy and fun to sing along… LOVED this song! I love the Doobie Brothers! Oh and I totally agree about the water! 🤣😂🤣 Great reaction guys!
"Black Water" made to #1 as a "A" single on the billboard Top 100 on March 15, 1975. Billboard also said this was the Doobie Brothers 2nd best song. The song was written and sung by Patrick Simmons (guitarist) with Tom Johnston as the Back up singer. Usually Tom wrote the songs of Early Doobie Brothers and sang lead, with Patrick Simmons and Tiran Porter (Bassist) as Back up singers. As a "B" side single on two other records it made to #52 and then # 32 on the Top 100 list in 1973. This was the Doobie Brother first number One Hit.
I'm with BJ on the feeling about "black water". I live right off of the mighty Columbia River between Washington and Oregon, near one of the widest and deepest areas. One night, heading back from a day spent on one of the sandy islands in the river, we ran out of gas and just started floating in the middle of nothing but pitch black. It was the scariest feeling, on that black water, with no moonlight and knowing there were just hundreds of feet of water beneath you, far from shore, and you can't see a thing. Never went out on the river again after dark.
I just saw the Doobies live 2 weeks ago this song was one of the encore songs for anyone who hasn't seen these guys in concert its a must they sounded awesome thanks for another great reaction!
Another one of those songs that was a B side on a 45 and some disc jockey flipped it over and played it on the air and people loved it more and it became a hit.
Loving old school Doobies. Great reaction to this fabulous song, one of the Doobies' earliest hits. Also from their earlier stuff: Long Train Running China Grove Listen to the Music
I love these older Doobies songs with the original lineup. Tom Johnston and Pat Simmons made a great singer/songwriter duo and this was the Doobie Bros. that I first loved as a teenager. Not to take anything away from the later version of the band with Michael McDonald, which was also great, but just not the same. ✌🏼😎
ITs a tribute to the deep south - so you hear that New Orleans band passing by and such - the song was created after the Doobie Brothers had toured and were surprised at the warm reception they received.
Love you guys. Been a subscriber for coupla years. BJ, the black water to which they're referring isn't a nighttime color. Many rivers, especially here in the South, develop a "black" color due to the pigmentation of the leaves that fall on it and the type of soil and minerals mixed in. Even in the day, a river may appear black. Caught the Doobies live at Merriweather Post Pavillion, MD back in the day. One of the best bands to come out of that era. Basically, a soundtrack to my childhoo.

This song was huge back in the day. It’s a super catchy song from a super talented band. Hope you keep digging into their catalog. ❤️
You're making a fan out of me. Keep listening to the music of the 60's and 70's. Enjoy.
One of my favorite Doobie Brothers songs.
"Black water" was a nick-name for the Mississippi River. Another clue is the paddle wheel boats in the song.
I’m with ya bro..eff a bunch of black water…NO !
This is my favorite song by them. They have so many great songs
Saw the Doobies three times...always a great live band and great musicians
I just saw the Doobies live 2 weeks ago this song was one of the encore songs for anyone who hasn't seen these guys in concert its a must they sounded awesome thanks for another great reaction!
Asia & BJ
The Doobie Brothers are awesome live in concert! My friends and I have seen them live back in 2016!
I love the Doobie Brothers!Home Free just released a cover of the Doobie Brothers “Listen To tHe Music” and it’s very good as well. Luv you guys!
Another one of those songs that was a B side on a 45 and some disc jockey flipped it over and played it on the air and people loved it more and it became a hit.
My first concert ever. August 1976.
My 1st concert was the Doobies in 1974 in Indianapolis.
Loving old school Doobies. Great reaction to this fabulous song, one of the Doobies' earliest hits. Also from their earlier stuff:
Long Train Running
China Grove
Listen to the Music
Never been to the Mississippi, but my buddies and I used to float the Rio Grand, and it was brown. Love this song. It reminds me of that.
Love Southern Rock
I love BJ's hat! Go O's!! This song just never gets old 50 years later
how 'bout dem O's, hon? 😉 Still hate the Angelos family but the O's are getting hot, hope they can get a wild card spot!
This song and Zappa’s “Let’s Make The Water Turn Black” are companion pieces.
One of my all time favorites
Just thought I'd mention, production wise y'all are about the best. Your voices are clear, the music level is just right. Cheers and TY
They are totally immersed in badass music.
The underlying guitar keeps this moving along very nicely.
Solid gold and platinum all the way every time.
Pat Simmons penned and sang this song. Awesome, number 1 tune in America at the time.
I grew up around water (Pacific Ocean, American & Sacramento Rivers and lakes). Swimming at night always made me feel peaceful.
All about the harmonies. Guitarist Patrick Simmons wrote and sings lead on this song.
Wife here..Such a popular song!!..Heard and Loved it all my life!!..(No Black Water for me at night either).!!!..
Doobie Brothers have had a lot of great songs - this one is my favorite. Love the fiddle and the vibe takes me right to country summer nights.
ITs a tribute to the deep south - so you hear that New Orleans band passing by and such - the song was created after the Doobie Brothers had toured and were surprised at the warm reception they received.
The fiddle in this song is actually a viola played by Novi Novog.
Ever go on deck of a cruise ship at night with no moon? While at sea? Pitch black. Lol
