    Robbie, this is a GREAT video on how to use the Ellsworth grind to the best advantage. Removes lots of wood fast for roughing and also does an excellent job slicing for shaping and making fine shearing cuts for finishing. One of the best demonstration of these techniques I have seen. Excellent video, thanks!!!

    Thanks for your two videos on roughing bowl blanks -- they are the best that I have found on youtube at explaining proper tool technique. I found these videos very useful, and I appreciate the detailed explanation at each stage of the process.

    Thank you Robbie for another very instructive video.
    As a keen amateur wood turner I can be on the lathe most days but one of my many weaknesses is getting the best out of using gouges.
    I look forward to the next part of your upload.
    Best wishes,
    Alan.

    Thank you Robbie, I have been turning almost a year now and have progressed very well. ( or so I think ) But there are several pieces missing in my education, Taking wood from log to lathe is an area I am lacking greatly in. I am very glad to see this video starting out at the wood pile and going to the lathe. Can't wait for the next one. Keep up the great work.. I really appreciate the time and trouble you go through to show us how to do things.

    Super video Robbie. Ever since you showed us how to rough turn a bowl by cutting across the grain a long time ago I've used that method and certainly don't miss getting beaten up by the wood bouncing the gouge back at me. I am very interested in the Ellsworth gouges now that you've shown just how versatile they are in good hands so that's something for me to aspire to.
    Best Wishes, Brendan.

      baconsoda Thanks brendan its a excellent tool when you learn how to handle it
      a 3/8 gouge can work the same if it ground right 55 on the tip and ground 3/4 swept back side grind.

    Great video Robbie and very well explained. The last bowl I roughed out the gouge was bouncing out on me as I had the handle down like you described in the video. I'm going to give this a go for the other half of the log when I get a chance to turn it.
    Thanks for the lesson and sharing.

    Robbie, I very much appreciate your approach to turning and especially your comments regarding safety. Very appropriate. I just found your site and have started watching your videos. I lived and worked in Ireland in the mid-90's for 2 1/2 yrs so I recognized you were Irish immediately! Are you from the Dubin area? North Dublin, perhaps? My ear for the accents is not as sharp as it used to be when I could pick up a Dub, or a Cork or Kerry man when I lived there. Cheers

    Thanks Robbie. A very useful tutorial.
    I can't help thinking that you could use a chainsaw stand like Sam Angelo; stretching like that didn't look overly safe or comfortable. 👍
    I'd spotted from a few of your videos that you swap hands for a better cut. I've started doing the same and after the initial strange feeling I'm starting to see results.
    Cheers,
    Ben

    Hi again Robbie another well explained and demonstrated video. Just a couple of questions, you said you threw some spalted shavings over the blanks, is this the best way of producing spalted timber! what timbers can you spalt using this method. Thanks and keep up the great work. regards, Tom.

    • @Robbiethewoodturner
      @Robbiethewoodturner  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thomas Hart All wood can decay therefore all wood can spalt.
      using shavings can work is it the best way i don't know. but the shavings you use must have spalting in them.there's a lot of information on the net and books on how to get different colours of spalting wood

    Man that gouge can cut!! you made me want to betray my other 5/8th gouge... do these need a special kind of grinding to keep their profile? If I got the gouge will I need to invest is some elaborate grinding jig just to keep it sharp? That was a nice demonstration Robbie, thank you!! (also, that blank moth flying around, I thought it was a small bat it first...).
    Yuval.

    • @Robbiethewoodturner
      @Robbiethewoodturner  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yuval Lahav lol Yuval it was a butterfly i have allot of hatching out in the shop at the moment.
      the gouge has 55 on the tip and ground 3/4 swept back side grind.
      it will work on a 3/8 gouge
