Where he was last year has nothing to do with ROY. If you want to play that game, think about this: Merrill had never played centerfield before spring training. He had to learn a new position and he still leads all rookies in every major batting category.
skenes definitely deserves it...6.0 pitching WAR, 2nd best in the NL, 3rd best in ML...merrill and chourio are so similar, nearly identifcal stats (both around 4-ish WAR), they will likely split some votes.
Team success doesn’t factor into individual awards in baseball because unlike other sports one guy can’t take over a game in baseball, that’s why guys like Ohtani and Trout can win MVPs

Countless rookies have been consistently clutch in the highest-leverage situations, thereby flipping losses into wins? Countless rookies set records for the number of high-leverage home runs over the course of a 50 game period? While playing gold-glove caliber defense at a new position? While playing 155+ games?
One of the only times I disagree with you, I believe Skenes has more hype and might be better in the future, but right now, Merrill is winning ROY I will be upset if he goes unanimous
And, if not for the moronic manager who pulled him far too early in many games and blew his earned wins with terrible releivers and closers who could not close a closet door, he would have probably been 15 - 2 with a sub 2 ERA. Rock on Paul. We will love you until the singling cheap owners give you away when it is time for you first real contract.
I will say this right now - I think it's incredibly close between Merrill and Skenes. I think Merrill is going to win it though for three simple reasons. One, Skenes hasn't played the entire season - that shouldn't be a knock on him but you can blame the Pirates on that. Two, Skenes numbers are Historic - but Merrill has done Historic things like what was mentioned in the video at Clutch Time and at one point literally carried the Padres. Numbers are nice, but what did those numbers do to get that Rookie's team to where they wanted to go? In that respect, Merrill's numbers mattered more then Skenes numbers have. But Three, the biggest reason, is that Skenes is now DONE for the year. His body of work is complete, thanks to how much the Pirates sunk - thanks to getting blasted (and SWEPT) in their Season Series with the Padres & Jackson Merrill who had a hand in a number of those games. Meanwhile, Merrill is not close to done with the Padres looking to chase down the Dodgers for the NL West Title and will likely appear in the Playoffs. If he hits more Game Winning Home Runs in the Post-Season, I just don't see how Skenes will top that at this point. Skenes will win, if Rookie of the Year is determined only with the Regular Season. But if the Post-Season is added in, and Merrill goes off -- the award is going to go to the Rookie that helped his team get into the Post-Season.
Awards are determined by how you perform in the regular season. There are other awards that would determine your performance in the playoffs (which don't count at the moment).

I can totally see Skenes in Philly
he should come to dodgers
If it isnt Merrill, mlb is doing more than just glazing like this content creator.
Bro hasn’t heard of Jackson Merrill
I think he has a case for cy young
One of the only times I disagree with you, I believe Skenes has more hype and might be better in the future, but right now, Merrill is winning ROY
I will be upset if he goes unanimous
And, if not for the moronic manager who pulled him far too early in many games and blew his earned wins with terrible releivers and closers who could not close a closet door, he would have probably been 15 - 2 with a sub 2 ERA. Rock on Paul. We will love you until the singling cheap owners give you away when it is time for you first real contract.
that thumbnail made him look like 40 uears old rookie
Usually in baseball team narratives and records dont matter for individual awards, and ROY and all awards are based strictly on the regular season
Awards are determined by how you perform in the regular season. There are other awards that would determine your performance in the playoffs (which don't count at the moment).
the 130 innings isn't enough
For a rookie? Absolutely it is lol. I'm not saying he should win Cy Young even tho he should def get votes
@@iTalkStudios he’s missed about 10 starts this year due to pitching every 6 days and missing all of April and a 1/3 of May. That alone gives Merrill the edge
@@AgnusDeiGloriabozo take
Tommy John in the future 100%
Yeah he’s really good but he’s not the same impact player Jackson Merrill is on his team
It's ok to have an opinion and just be wrong. 6 innings every 5 days doesn't equate to every single game.
I'd be more in favor of Cy Young than rookie of the year and even then he's 7 starts short 🤷
I want Merril to win it so bad.
Merrill wins it if San Diego goes deep
Merrill deserves it more, but MLB will make sure Olivia Dunne's boyfriend wins it
Skenes is gonna win it
Arguable but still laughable. This is what you dont realize as a viewer who never even played HS ball. Pitching is not EASY BUT ill take the guy who is smashing 100 mph balls then credit the guy who is throwing them. Merill wins mid diff.
That’s not how the award works, just bcz what he does it harder doesn’t mean he’s better, Skenes has been a better pitcher than Merrill has been a hitter and fielder

I think Jackson churio has something to say about that
It's Jackson Merrill who is Rookie of the Year. Come on man, I thought you were better than this. Paul Skenes is amazing but Jackson Merrill is on another level. There is no debate.
I think Chewbacca should win Wookie of the Year, easily... Wait, what are we talking about again...?
Honestly, it’s close to roy and mvp….
This is intentionally trying to bait fans. He knows it’s obviously Merrill

No disrespect my guy but you just overbooking how historic Merrill has been is insane. You gave his numbers and said yeah but this pitcher is better. I completely disagree and so do many people. The unanimous Rookie of the year? I smell a very strong bias.
But what about lindor??? I thought we were ffff ffr. Ffffrrriendsss
how the hell did you spelled Jackson Merrill??
I’ve had my suspicions that this iTalk guy was a clown, but this confirms it. You obviously haven’t been paying attention if you think Skenes deserves it over Jackson Merrill.
Nice click bait brother. It’s obviously Merrill

Dude, what? Skenes is not the obvious ROY winner. Step back from the pipe.
That said, MLB needs to instansiate another ROY category. There needs to be one for every day players like Merrill and one for Pitchers. The two positions are so different. A pitcher cannot carry his team for a whole week like an offensive player can.
Truth.
The only reason skenes is doing so good is bc this is the first season he’s in the league. Once hitters start seeing him more, he won’t be so elite
Sorry you know merill is taking kt
