    Fun fact: They added Alphinaud trying and failing to heal him recently to this cutscene, because people kept yelling at this cutscene going "IM A HEALER, LET ME HEAL OUR BOY!". It hit hard already, but now it hits even harder. Count Fortempts's voice line still kills me though... Rest in peace Stephen Critchlow, you will be missed.

      Watching that unflappable man, the man who slapped one of his sons when he messed up a mission, Count Dripula himself... he's just staring out the window. He doesn't look at anyone while he's talking. You see and hear how much pain he's holding in, and watching him collapse like that, when it finally becomes too much to bear... it hurt.

    • @gamester512

      To quote Theoden from the LotR trilogy: *"No parent should have to bury their own child."*
      It is expected that the child(ren) will outlive their parents, so when it's the opposite, it's that much harder. And sadly, this is what happened with my Great-Grandmother, as her son (my Grandfather) passed away from cancer about a decade before she herself passed. My Great-Grandmother made it all the way to the age of 100 before she finally passed, while I believe my grandfather was in his 60s when he passed (I don't know for certain how old he was when he passed as I was only 8 years old at the time).

    A bit of information regarding the "Why?" of this scene:
    Zephirin de Valhourdin, the Knight who threw the spear, originally aimed for the position of Lord Commander, but Aymeric beat him to it. Because of this, he specifically aimed to hurt and undermine Aymeric by taking out one of his strongest allies in this moment - namely the Warrior of Light -, even though Thordan the VIIth never gave any orders or even mentioned wanting you dead beforehand. Haurchefant was just an unforseen, but not unwelcome, victim in this tragedy born out of jealousy and spite.

      Additional bonus: when Heavesward was endgame, Paladin's block (defense mechanic using shields) did not block magic attacks. So when we saw that magic attack blocked by Haurchefant, we got confused, then realized they went and injected that into the lore when it got through. Of course now it's not true anymore, retconned out of existence.

    • @tenjenk
      @tenjenk ปีที่แล้ว +19

      @@the0s0ph1st Not retconned. thats not what a retcon is. That was what it was when it was current content but the game had to move on due to gameplay and story segregation BUT even by that measure, the ability later changing can be considered the warrior of light as a paladin developing and growing their skills. In this case the WoL can be seen as specifically adapting the ability it because of this trauma. Theres more than a few ability changes that can be linked alongside lore events just before the big change, SMN has a lot of those.

    The moment we stop getting attached is the moment our hearts are replaced with stone. Only with soft hearts can we extend to others the same compassion Haurchefant showed us. He may be a video game character, but that compassion is easy to bring with us across the border separating fantasy from reality. The way he lived shows us exactly why a smile better suits a hero.

    I remember when I did this scene, it was the toughest I had to go through because I loved Haurchefant as he reminded me of a RL friend who passed away. So I was always reading him text and was hoping he join forever but then when he actually passed too that hit me too hard, I couldn't do MSQ properly for 2 weeks and I cried almost every night because the depression came back from losing my friend and now this fictional character who had no ties to it, but this game somehow connects you to it emotionally.. Also I played in Japanese so yes my friend was very pun heavy and mad those silly rmarks always. Japanese Haurchefant is a bit of a pervert and too silly, he was so loving and lovable that is why it was more connected ... it was comforting

    This is so great every time yuo've made one of these FFXIV videos I've just done it myself like 3 days earlier :-D
    This story element impressed me tho ... broke my heart, but well done. Hourchefant was a real one, was there by you ride or die when everyone left you hanging, brought you in under his own name, called it that he was willing to go in and die to help Ishgard's future according to his moral compass, always put his money where his mouth was. RIP to my hero.

    Apparently in the JP Dialogue they make it way more on the nose that Haurchefant is in love with and attracted to the WOL. And that some of the fatherly affection Count Fortemps has for the WOL is because he is taking care of the person his late son loved so dearly.

    I'm late to this vid but I wept like a baby for several minutes after and had to log off for an hour because I was so bereft after this happened. I'm 60 years old. I bawled like a baby. That's just one of the things that makes this game so darned amazing...it makes us really invested in the story, the characters. We are inside the story and we feel everything that's going on in a very personal way.

  • @gamester512
    @gamester512 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Trust me, this moment hit *ALL* of us hard. Haurchefant was the kind of person that any of us would be truly blessed to have as a friend. Selfless, compassionate, kind, honest, noble, reliable....the very epitome of an ideal knight. He was the kind of person that you knew you could always count on to be there for you whenever you needed him....and even if you didn't.
    And yet, in my eyes the absolute worst part about his death is that it came at the hands of one of his own countrymen....at the hands of a fellow Ishgardian. He wasn't struck down by a dragon as a casualty of the Dragonsong War while defending his homeland, he was struck down in an act of callousness and treachery by a fellow Ishgardian. One of the very people he'd so often put his life on the line to defend was ultimately the one to end his life. As heartbreaking as his death is, it's the fact that he deserved a far better end than to be struck down through treachery that stings the most.

      As a follow up now that I've finished the video, as painful as it is to say or feel, I would not recommend getting less invested in characters. Not for a selfish reason because I like seeing people suffer, but because this story and these characters can be very special. With how long the story is you can connect to them deeply. Sometimes that connection hurts but sometimes it can also bring unbridled joy. This story touched my soul and connected with me like no other form of media. It's changed me as a person for the better in a way that, while I hesitate to use this term, feels almost spiritual. If you try and close off your emotions, try to disconnect from the story, you may find that you loose that spark. It's a special, rare thing.
      I do hope, through the good times and bad, that your journey is a good one. Take your time, you only get to experience it once.

    "A Knight lives to serve, to protect, to sacrifice. There is no greater calling"
    -Lord Haurchenfant
    Edmont echoes his son's words later
    Also all the reaction videos are Catgirl players, and I have no room to judge as a Catgirl.

    I just past this part and I won't lie I wasn't fond of Hauchefaunt at first but he grew on me and I felt attached to him near the end and that's when I was mad that he died and when I Edmonts pains of sorrow I burst out into tears because that was the final kick to this tragedy 😢

    As someone who lost a mother, I can only partially understand this. But the waterworks hit... after the pure unbridled rage at having the one man who took our character in when no one else would, was taken from us.

    Alphinaud trying to heal him is new to me, but yeah I can't wait for the 2 Vtubers I'm watching reach this part. They're still not in HW yet and have seen Moen's death. I'm in Endwalker post game so I know what's next, at least for the most part because apparently SE is changing cutscenes now and it looks like I need to use TH-cam to see the original cutscenes again. And for me personally, I want Alphinaud to take a backseat in the story. I don't hate him, just that being the brains of strategy and tactics I don't think he should be on the front lines. But then there's enemies with stealthy tactics so idk, also kinda wishing him and his sister to be tall like Urianger already.
    Anyway minor gripes aside, I migrated to Star Wars The Old Republic cause I'm finally able to play it and have been enjoying it the past few months and I just finished the Sith inquisitor story the other day. Loving the stories each class has and so far character deaths as a Sith are primarily my fault because evil playthrough 🤣🤣🤣. I do wonder if anyone I care about dies, so far I don't think so

    To ignore the elephant, I adore how the vault guards (and to a lessor degree most human dungeon enemies) just pour out of the woodwork. They dont just wait around, they coming! Real fun touch.
