    This is such a creative way to replicate those. Man, I was kid when the wax packs had their last big moments before the ultra-glossy foil packs took over in the 90's. I mostly have sports cards, but I do have a couple sets of Batman movie cards, Ninja Turtles, and some other misc stuff from the time like Garbage Pail Kids and Ratfink. I could smell the cardboard and bubblegum watching this video. haha

      I remember the last of the old style wax packs I collected were the 90 Dick Tracy cards. I think I even ended up completing the full set. I had some Garbage Pail Kids but my favorites where the Wacky Packages.

    Another way this could be done that (i think) is the most authentic (and potentially faster? idk i haven't tried this YET): print your design onto standard paper, then turn the standard paper into wax paper (tutorials galore on YT) by basically just heating up wax candle shreds over your paper and letting it dry. This way the entire thing is wax paper, and can be sealed with an iron on the back like the OG packs were!

    What about using a color laser printer. Print the image in reverse than use an iron to press and seal the toner to the wax paper? You might be able to use acetone to help release the paper from the wax paper/toner. Seen this done with t-shirts and black and white laser prints. Who knows it might work!

  • @diyem
    @diyem 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This is so cool! Do you know why they used to do this? Was the wax acid-free for collectors who didn't open the packs so they would last longer or was this more of an aesthetic thing? Genuinely curious! Also, I'm sure this is impossible to DIY without proper machines but I wonder how they made those holographic cards back in the day that were almost animated, if you shifted the card to different light sources it was a new image. Always been curious about that but never sure how that was done or how to look up how it's made or source manufacturers. If anyone has any info about that it would be much appreciated!

    • @ScottSerkland
      @ScottSerkland  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am not 100 percent sure why they used wax but if I had to guess I would say its because the packs have bubble gum in them and the wax probably kept the gum fresher longer. I'd be curious to get a definitive answer myself.
      As for the animated cards your talking about that process is called lenticular printing. It's essentially like if you were to fold a piece of paper into an accordion shape and cut and paste two different images on either side of the fold, so when you move your eyes from one side to the next you see alternate images. Only they can do it super tiny and even with more than two images.

    • @diyem
      @diyem 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ScottSerkland oh thanks so much! Yeah that makes sense about the gum. Also thank you! It's bothered me for years that I didn't know the exact term for the printing process! Have you ever attempted to make lenticular cards?

  • @ethanlbp2391
    @ethanlbp2391 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you attach a strip of wax paper where the two folds on the back meet, you can use an iron to melt the pack together for a more authentic feel!

    Hey Scott - what do you think about printing the wrapper as a mirror image and sticking it on the inside of the wax paper? Maybe bring up the colours on it first? That way you'd get that wax paper feel on the outside of the pack. Just an idea.

    • @ScottSerkland
