I realised today that I watch the channels that are cleaning up the country. Scrappers cleaning out old farms, a guy rehabbing deer habitat, guys taking down dangerous structures, brush hogging kudzu and vines making pasture again. And you Chris, making valuable water management and fish ponds out of lost and overgrown ponds. All this making me more hopeful for agriculture and food stability. Water and food are the basics for everything else.
I saw it once, but a group of people do "rescue" diving to recover cars & trucks which have gone into a river or lake. The video is pretty good as is the work they do. Sorry I don't remember the name but I'm sure you'll find it when you search for it. Interesting what they find.
All that shows you that there was a generation on this planet wich didn't give a fnck about nature and only thought about there yet and now. 60's till 80's wher no good times in human expansion in to the enviroment.
This pond is already beautiful!!! In its own way. It definitely needs work, but the far end from the dam is pretty as it is! Looking forward to this one, like everyone else!!
There is a valuable lesson you showed us today. It does pay to shop local. These folks know how to change things up so that your up and running again quickly. Big shout out to Kevin and his friend for making time on a holiday weekend to help a neighbor out.
Chris, I now keep a 50' length of hydraulic hose, and field replaceable fittings in my tool box. I lost a hose, and was up and running in less than an hour. Everything I could find said that the field replaceable hose ends are as reliable as the swage ends. Way cheaper than $700 site service. Even if you don't trust them for the long term, they would, at the very least, get you up an running for the immediate future, until you could conveniently get to the hydraulic shop. My only advice, based upon experience, is make sure you put some hydraulic oil on the fitting before you tighten it into the hose. Otherwise you can bind them up to a point where they will self destruct. FYI
I've also used the field fittings , your right they work well for me also but recently I have not had good luck finding them. I use to get them from car quest but when they got bought out they quit carring

Pretty little pond. Pirtek hydraulic and hoses love me. I rip out old timber bridges and replace them with concrete bridges. It's amazing how many lines and fittings get broken, burst and squashed. Shit just happens

I think, stress the think, that the exit side with a cap on is longer and the weight of that water holds the pond side water up when the top cap is in place. This could be a load of £%&&+ but it made sense at the time. Cheers any way

It seems like you could use one of those Fecon grinding mulchers in your arsenal like Upstate Brush control has would make quick work of a lot of the branches and leave the big stuff for burning or firewood.

thats a nice looking pond there,i like the idea of a half circle island along the left side of the ponds edge,you took down a pine tree tho although u said ur gonna leave the pine trees stand there.the fix on the hose there ,that was a hillbilly style fix,sure aint lookin pretty lol.at least the boom is working again to continue to work.lucky that the hydraulic fluid didnt spray everything into the cab,that would have been an oily mess.did anyone notice the bee inside chris,s cab lol.prolly wanting check the digger out lol. stay safe
Almost time to start playing in the mud again :) Good to have some buddies nearby who can help you out with hydraulics issues like that. Nothing ruins a day like having to wait until the next week to get a line fixed. And on the bright side, the cab's inside probably hasn't been this clean in years :)

Pretty, pretty setting to say the least. It looks mucho bettero than it did at 7:30 that morning. Gotta love jobs that show that right away, instant gratification and motivation ftw. You may want to look into getting an internal pipe wrench for when fittings get snapped off inside, they work much easier than an ez-out and zero chance of tearing up the block/femal fitting.
Upstate Brush Control could take care of that small stuff which wouldn't need burned leave you to the big stuff; you need a machine like theirs rather than the new unit you have on the mini.
Chris, with you talking about squeaky tracks. Your idea of using hydraulic fluid was messy. Good buddy really came through. But the change to the pond is already great. I guess it is something to think about getting hydraulic hose repair machine. For yourself?
Man, I just hate it when the trees take revenge for digging up their neighbors. You gotta have some pump up sprayers, one for degreaser - one for clear water. I would just clean the cab for now and then spray degreaser on the outside just before a good rain storm. That will make a good view for a new house. I would dig out pipes and leave a swale spillway.
whats nice with the pipes is you can drive over them when water is going out the pipes .. if its a swale you can not drive threw there or you should not drive threw it ..

You operate machinery in trees, it's just a matter of time before you break hoses and couplings, knock tracks off, lose pins...You end up getting pretty good at replacing hoses and filling reservoirs!
You can in cross the hoses on the thumb and swap the connectors on the hydraulic solenoids to get the thumb directional controls the way you like them. Way less mess than swapping the hoses.
it’s not that big of a deal, just some fittings to loosen, he did it with a junk adjustable, and anybody who has run an excavator has replaced a hydraulic line before, anyway he edited out the cussing.

Instead of burning vegetation, you might consider chipping it. The remains could be spread on fields, meadows or in forest edges or perhaps even sell it as wood chips.
Chris, As I was watching this I had the feeling I had been here before. I watched the videos out of order. Do you need all kinds of permits to do this type of work? I'm in Maine. If someone wanted to clean up a pond, wet land, here we would need all kids of state approvals and permits. I know of someone who had a commercial property that had a wet land on it. It was a hole that was dig during a land clearing about 20 years ago for the dirt. It was never filled back in. The owner had proof to show the state. Because it had been wet for a certain number of years, it became a wet land and therefor couldn't be touched. The area 100 feet around it couldn't be disturbed either.

I`m glad it wasn`t more serious. When i drove logging truck with/loader, i would be miles and miles from extra fittings or tools or hose. So the answer was to have enough tools, fittings and possibly adapters, and extra hose long enough to replace the longest one on the rig. If it had to be used on a short line it could be coiled up. Anything to get through the day and then take the truck back to the shop. I had the log rack starting to break one day and i swung into the shop to weld it up real quick thinking it wouldn`t make it all day. I didn`t go very far out of my route to go to the shop and fix it. However the boss heard me come back and got all bent out of shape! lol He was a hot head and spit chewing tobacco out as he yelled. lol I got some welds on there and took off. His wife thought it was a good idea to fix it before it failed completely and ? Injuries? Lawsuit? Take care
Wow that's bad... 80 bucks in hydraulic oil on the ground 15ft next to a pond... You better scoop all the oily dirt up and burn it with the brush fire or the owner will accidentally start the next oil rush after seeing all the oil in the pond, hopefully it doesn't rain onto it, I'd put a watertight tarp down, scoop the oily dirt up and put another tarp above til its burning day, then sprinkle the dirt in after you got a good hot spot... Here in Europe working on a pond or lakeside is more of a hastle, your hydraulic system needs to be flushed out and you use eitherglycerine jell or a hydraulic oil based on rapeseed oil that's biodegradable, pretty similar to chainsaw oil, all grease also needs to be biodegradable, refueling needs to take place more than 50 yards from the next whater and incase of a empty pond above the whater table
The way I saw the lake is it was silted in and shallow mud. Broken pipe and plugged pipes. Trees all over it laying in the water. Many issues. If a big storm hit it might become a real danger by taking out the dam or side. Now as is it won't be used for fire snorkels as it was overgrown and poised danger.
I work in the aluminum industry. During one of our maintenance stops, one of our mechanics managed to open the filter housing to a hydraulic pump with the pump running... About 800 Gallons of oil sprayed out.. they had hydraulic oil EVERYWHERE the nose, ears, eyes, etc.

Trees have a way of fighting back, and they always go for the jugular. Glad you and your friends were able to improvise and get her going again. I know they're expensive, but rather than having a screw-in cap on the end of the siphon, have you considered using a ball valve? Not only is it easy to open, but you can just as easily stop the flow without breaking the siphon in case you need to start it up again later on. Just my 2c...
Seems as your hydraulic hose helper can be a voluntary fireman with all gears in his belt. When we employs them we see as a bonus long waist circumference! Haha! As a fire officer I have this too and it gets longer every year because of all the new electronics we have to carry on standby duty! ;D

I think a pond looks more realistic when it has trees and other vegetation around it. Rather than a water hole in the middle of a bare field.

Wow that's bad... 80 bucks in hydraulic oil on the ground 15ft next to a pond... You better scoop all the oily dirt up and burn it with the brush fire or the owner will accidentally start the next oil rush after seeing all the oil in the pond, hopefully it doesn't rain onto it, I'd put a watertight tarp down, scoop the oily dirt up and put another tarp above til its burning day, then sprinkle the dirt in after you got a good hot spot...
Here in Europe working on a pond or lakeside is more of a hastle, your hydraulic system needs to be flushed out and you use eitherglycerine jell or a hydraulic oil based on rapeseed oil that's biodegradable, pretty similar to chainsaw oil, all grease also needs to be biodegradable, refueling needs to take place more than 50 yards from the next whater and incase of a empty pond above the whater table

The way I saw the lake is it was silted in and shallow mud. Broken pipe and plugged pipes. Trees all over it laying in the water. Many issues. If a big storm hit it might become a real danger by taking out the dam or side. Now as is it won't be used for fire snorkels as it was overgrown and poised danger.

Trees have a way of fighting back, and they always go for the jugular. Glad you and your friends were able to improvise and get her going again. I know they're expensive, but rather than having a screw-in cap on the end of the siphon, have you considered using a ball valve? Not only is it easy to open, but you can just as easily stop the flow without breaking the siphon in case you need to start it up again later on. Just my 2c...

Seems as your hydraulic hose helper can be a voluntary fireman with all gears in his belt. When we employs them we see as a bonus long waist circumference! Haha! As a fire officer I have this too and it gets longer every year because of all the new electronics we have to carry on standby duty! ;D
