I used to live in San Jose, I left in 2017. Not sure if the "Filipino BBQ" restaurant (yes that's the name) is still in business. It's located at the corner of Aborn and White. If they are still in business they're worth your time to visit and try. Price is about the same as in Fil-Am in Daly city. Good luck.
YES YES YES 🇵🇭🇵🇭 a part 2 is a must, plsssss and thank you! Love seeing my culture represented in such a positive light and this episode went by way too quick 🥲 really appreciated your guys’ excited reactions to everything you tried!!!! Have you tried longanisa before and tapsilog? Would love to see those and one of my fave Filipino desserts is cascaron ooo and champorado 😋
Great video! Filipino food rocks! So, peanut butter can be treated like tofu - you can make it sweet or savory, depending on what you want. As for the halo halo, ask for a bowl :) A part 2 would be great - visit 7 Mile in Brisbane and FOB Kitchen, Lumpia Company & Senor Sisig in Oakland. As for another cuisine: Russian or Ethiopian for something different. And bring your mom! She's great!
Team savory, only because in Thailand, our peanut sauce is served savory. Param is a common peanut dish served with greens and meat, topped with peanut sauce and a touch of chili sauce. I'm also surprised you didn't try Breadbasket, which is right across the street from FilAm and is a popular bakery for their ube infused goods. There's also Tselogs down the street who serve an incredible young coconut pie by the slice! Daly city is an incredible hub for Filipino foods. I only wish there were more veggies in their common cuisine.
So mixing halo-halo is easy. Just dunk the spoon in one side of the glass. Tap it a few times in that same location til you see the shaved ice slowly losing its height. Just keep dunking it in that original location until you feel the top (ice cream/flan) is safe inside the glass. I don't mix the flan too much bec I want to be able to bite in to it but it's up to you. Enjoy!
Next time you have the Kare Kare, eat it with bagoong (fermented shrimp paste). It’s a must! The saltiness balances out the sweet/savory (lol) of the peanut butter. 😋
I screamed when you showed starbread i was repeating I hope she get the senorita bread I hope she gets the senorita bread ughhhh soooooo good literally melts in your mouth
Real natural peanut butter with NO added sugar oils or anything is savory. Most “peanut butter” people use has sweeteners so that could cause the confusion.
Yay! Thank you for highlighting Filipino food! For a part 2 maybe try FOB Kitchen, 7 Mile, Abaca, Uncle Tito, Tselogs, Chibog - there's so many spots to try. Sheesh! You could potentially do a whole vid with Filipino dessert too (Sarap shop, Marley's Treats food trucks, Hilda's Mart & Bakery, Bread Basket, Mitchell's Ice cream)! Anyway thanks again! ...I'm hungry now. Haha😂
I personally think of PB as a neutral that can be made savory or sweet depending on the application. kind of like cacao, it can be made into sweet chocolate or added into a mole or BBQ sauce that's savory
Peanut butter is sweet. If I eat a scoop by itself it’s a sweet snack. If it’s used in combination with something sweeter like chocolate or jelly, it adds a savory contrast bc it’s nutty but that doesn’t place it into the savory category AT ALL omg
Yay!!!! My friend's family owns FilAm and they are the sweetest, hardest working people!!! Thank you so much for sharing that spot. The beef nilaga at Manila Eatery in Colma by Target and Pork Sinigang from Lech' Go in St. Francis Square in Daly City are also really good. You have to call ahead and make sure they havent run out yet that day, but its worth the drive when its still available!
the peanut butter debate is tricky because i typically think of it more in a sweet context like peanut butter and jelly or peanut butter and chocolate, but i do understand bird and jessica saying it tastes savory - that being said, i would not consider a plain peanut butter sandwich savory. it just depends on what it's with for me!
Hi. A trick to eating halo-halo and not make a mess is to eat some of the ice cream and leche flan on the top. Then mix it... Thanks for featuring Filipino food. Glad you loved it.
Your videos are so fun. You do the hard work of traveling around to cool places so I don’t have to. It’s fun to get introduced to new cuisines. I would like to see other cuisines, Burmese, Thai, Vietnamese etc. if you are into those cuisines
As always - an excellent tour of Bay Area restaurants! Thank you Mei Mei! I've added more places to try. I'm up for many more of this same kind of content. More Filipino (it's not a cuisine I know well), Hawaiian, different regional Chinese cuisines, Japanese, Malaysian, Thai, Vietnamese, Cambodian... I love Asian cuisine! And I'm afraid my vote for 'peanut butter' alone, being savory. However it is added to tons of dipping sauces and American desserts - which is when it becomes sweet. It's an ingredient that can go either way depending on how it's used. Keep up the great work! You are my favourite American food blogger!
Amazing video as always! This video hits close to home for me. Growing up in a Filipino household, Lola would always make these fresh and it was happiness in a dish. I'm so glad you got to try some of my favorite dishes and makes me miss home that much more! I would LOOOOOVE to see a part 2! Also, I think peanut butter is sweet. Lol!
Peanut butter is BOTH sweet and savory. It has a sweetness from sugar, but the flavor profile of the peanut is savory. Kind of like how bbq sauce is sweet and savory
Part 2! Let's go! BTW, that rice bucket is actually a rice cooking pot that cooks on fire.... and you guys obvioysly have old Macbooks. The "M" macbooks don't even come close to warm. Seriously.
WOO! 24HRS OF FILIPINO FOOD! 🇵🇭 I’m so glad you finally got to try Fil-Am!! Best buy in the Bay. Long lines but that means it’s worth it!! EDIT: You should try chocolate meat! 😉 Also team Savory 😜
Love that you enjoyed eating Filipino food for a day... and of course a parr 2 is definitely a must...hahhah ,y suggestion would be - for breakfast champorado with tuyo or dried fish, or garlic rice with longganisa . For lunch Bulalo, pancit and Kaldereta . For dessert try native kakanin like bibingka , sapin sapin , puto , suman , etc...
peanut butter is SWEET!! It’s made seem savory when paired with really sweet things like jelly, apples, or nutella. But i eat peanut butter sandwiches all the time and it’s literally sweet 😭but i guess depends what peanut butter you have!
Great video! Continue with part two please! Peanut butter is sweet. Also, my wife is Fillipino, so we are having fun watching this, also....how do you know you are married to a Fillipino??? The rice cooker is on 24/7!
Hi I haven't been watching your videos long but so far there amazing and so are you so keep being you cuz your awesome videos. Also I all the food goes well for you.
Wow! It's so nice to know that you love our food and you present it so well and the barbecue looks so delicious!❤😂 Hope you could also try authentic Japanese cuisine .🙏💖
peanut butter is tastes sweet and crunchy to me . I think you should do i part 2 of the Filipino food tour . also could u do 24 hours only eating brazilian food .
For Filipino food, you should try Carioca (dessert) and arroz caldo! It’s like a chicken porridge. As for new cuisine - I’d like to see a video for Thai and/or Lao food!
So excited to see your Taiwan and Japan videos!! Not sure how soon but hope you have safe travels❤ currently in Ecuador and it’s been such a nice experience to visit the homeland 🥰
depends. if it's natural pb, it's savory. if it's the typical Jif or Skippy, it's a lil sweet cause they add molasses or some other sweetner to it. But, I hate to tell you this, Bird's right. PB is the savory to jelly's sweet.
It would be cool to see 24 hours of Ethiopian or some other African chains. Another random suggestion, but since they are near-ish, it would be cool to see a Sacramento or Davis food tour!
So glad you got to try so much Filipino Food!! Isla is pronounced as "is-la" by the way, which means island :) Peanut butter is savory for me! Love your videos!
Yay Filipino food! If you're ever in San Diego, Animae has amazinggg fine dining Filipino food. The kare kare melts in your mouth. Oi Asian Fusion is a yummy fast casual option. Their pork belly umami bowl with gravy is delicious and you have to try their vinegar hot sauce (it's not spicy at all). I have never even considered pb to be savory nor had a discussion with anyone about it lol
Mei Mei, peanut butter is savory. Think about its use in sauces and other asian dishes and sauces. It makes them super rich and nom nom. 😜 I can't remember if you've been to the "filipino" night markets out there, but have you guys had filipino street foods in general? or even have a full episode of baked goods? I know, not so healthy but soooo yummmm!
If you're eating peanut butter that's full of added sugar, then it's sweet(ened) but if you're just talking about straight peanut butter, it's savory. Peanuts aren't sweet and grinding them doesn't add sweetness.
Thank you for featuing Filipino cuisine. There are a lot of Filipino restaurants and bakeries at the SF Bay Area. Another is Valerio's Bakery where they have multiple locations across the SF Bay Area. You will be overwhelmed what to buy there because everything is deliciously good. I highly recommend getting their Chicken siopao located in the refrigerator, Freshly made turon in the display case, pan de sal or any Filipino breads and pastries, and their kakanin (steamed rice cake desserts). Get the sapin sapin, biko or bibingkang malagkit. You cannot go wrong when coming to this bakery. Sunshine Bakery in Vallejo for their signature Filipino Caramel Cake which almost taste like Estrel's in the Philippines. Sinigang, Tinola, Kare Kare, and ask the waiting staff - they are helpful, courteous and know what are great recommendations to eat. They also serve tapsilog for the picky eaters.

as a filipino. kare kare for me is a B tier meal. Kare kare with bagoong tho. God tier. Always pair kare kare with a pea-sized bagoong sauce on it. And us filipinos always struggle with mixing halo-halo like tf they alwaysfill the cup to the brim lmao
What other Filipino foods should I try that I missed in the video? AND what cuisine should we do next? Let me know below!👇
first! and you should try korean!
@@shelly.cooper thanks for your suggestion!! 🥰
The rice plate looks scrumptious

YES YES YES 🇵🇭🇵🇭 a part 2 is a must, plsssss and thank you! I wish I could try Filipino food, it looks so good! I’m of Mexican descent and it seems like we share a lot in culture, values, etc :)
YES! Thanks for showcasing my heritage! Filipino food is such an integral part of our culture and all these foods looked so good!
glad to see filipino food!! pinoy pride 🇵🇭🇵🇭 love your vids btw ❤❤
filipino food is amazing!!! so glad we did this vid hehe 🥰
Great video! Filipino food rocks! So, peanut butter can be treated like tofu - you can make it sweet or savory, depending on what you want. As for the halo halo, ask for a bowl :)

Love how you showcased that there is so much more to Filipino cuisine than pansit and lumpia! Thank you!

YAYYY we love filipino food 🥰🥰
I’m so jealous how amazing your food is! I’m in the north east uk and I’d travel happily for this food ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Same!
SAME OMG
Same omggg
Real natural peanut butter with NO added sugar oils or anything is savory. Most “peanut butter” people use has sweeteners so that could cause the confusion.
Love Filipino food. As for peanut butter, it is both savory and sweet. It is the perfect combo of both worlds.

I second Chibog. Their crispy pata is so good! And right next door for dessert is House of Silvanas 🤤
ok like THANK YOU for all the recs because Imma use them
I personally think of PB as a neutral that can be made savory or sweet depending on the application. kind of like cacao, it can be made into sweet chocolate or added into a mole or BBQ sauce that's savory
The señorita bread also known in Philippines as "Spanish Bread" is a good mix with coffee in the morning. It's a sort of alternative with Pandesal
You should definitely have a Vietnamese or Malaysian food day! Also for Filipino food you should definitely try dinuguan! Super delicious and savory!
Peanut butter is sweet. If I eat a scoop by itself it’s a sweet snack. If it’s used in combination with something sweeter like chocolate or jelly, it adds a savory contrast bc it’s nutty but that doesn’t place it into the savory category AT ALL omg
Depends the peanut butter. I use all natural PB which has no added sugar so that leans towards savory. Anything with added sugar is sweet.
American born Filipino here but love me some Pinoy food. Next suggestion is to try Palabok.
Yay!!!! My friend's family owns FilAm and they are the sweetest, hardest working people!!! Thank you so much for sharing that spot. the turon and the top of the creme brulee comparison was spot on!

PEANUT BUTTER IS SWEET!! LOL also that seniorita bread looks GOOOD omg
It would be cool to see 24 hours of Ethiopian or some other African chains.
Another random suggestion, but since they are near-ish, it would be cool to see a Sacramento or Davis food tour!
Next time try Chibog in South SF! Their pork tocino and combo sisig are amazing.
I looooove Starbread. So addicting!!

I would honestly love to see a Senegalese cuisines vid 🎉❤ love your vids!
Peanut butter is savoury!! Great video looks delicious ❤

Thank you for featuing Filipino cuisine. There are a lot of Filipino restaurants and bakeries at the SF Bay Area. During and after the pandemic, there were a lot of new bakeries that popped up that feature Filipino inspired flavors too. La Kalidad has their own storefront somewhere in San bruno where they feature Venoisserie and other Western baked goods with Filipino-inspired flavors, Bibingka Bites, another South SF institution where they feature their bibingka cupcakes with Filipino and modern flavors like salted caramel, chocolate, cheese, pandan, macapuno. Another that is worth visiting either at the Livermore Farmer's Market or the Niles Farm'er's Market is Harina. Harina is another bakery where a couple opened in 2021 - they have pandesal, croissant, ensaymada that feature Filipino flavors. This bakery excels making bread. You got to try this. Get the sapin sapin, biko or bibingkang malagkit. You cannot go wrong when coming to this bakery. Sunshine Bakery in Vallejo for their signature Filipino Caramel Cake which almost taste like Estrel's in the Philippines. Elite Bakery in Union City is a Guamanian - Filipino bakery that sells their signature Mango and Guava Chiffon cakes. Order the guava chiffon cake in advance. Luisa and Sons is another bakery, but I like to go there with their fried lumpia and their walnut tarts, yema balls and their other tarts they have in the display case. Another one is Kalesa which means carriago in Tagalog. This is a family size restaurant serving Filipino food. This food just taste like my mother's and grandmother's home cooking.I highly recommend the Gising Gising - a coconut based stew with a variety of vegetables that is steamed and braised. Sinigang, Tinola, Kare Kare, and ask the waiting staff - they are helpful, courteous and know what are great recommendations to eat. They also serve tapsilog for the picky eaters.
🇵🇭♥️😋
Would love to see you eating only Thai or Korean food next!!!
On mixing the halo-halo :
Mix from the bottom first, slowly and gradually mixing everything as you approach the top. “Slow centrifugal force” is the key.
Thank you so much for enjoying and complimenting our local foods! Mabuhay Philippines!🇵🇭
I WAS SO EXCITED WHEN I SAW THE TITTLE I ALMOST SCREAMED
I love this food. I like learning different foods.💗
Tip for mixing halo-halo, dip your spoon to the bottom of the glass and just do an up&down motion. It might seem that it's not doing anything at first but eventually it will mix it altogether.
Love it!!!! I would like to see Mexican food!
Halo halo: eat first the toppings to lessen the load. Then mix it from the side.
Senorita bread is soooo gooooddd
New sub here. Love your content. Our cravings almost satisfied us while just watching your entree ❤️❤️❤️
Isla is my favorite restaurant to visit. I go there every time I visit San Francisco!

I agree with Jessica and Bird, peanut butter is savory! 😂
I like your videos and you look really enjoying food. ^^ Can I have a question about camera setting while you are eating and explaining? Do you move one camera here and there? Or one main camera set up in front of you? And at the same time do you film the food with another same model of camera when you focus food? I want to introduce Seoul Korea on my chnnel. Love videos like this one!
as a filipino. kare kare for me is a B tier meal. Kare kare with bagoong tho. God tier. Always pair kare kare with a pea-sized bagoong sauce on it. And us filipinos always struggle with mixing halo-halo like tf they alwaysfill the cup to the brim lmao
Yum! Filipino and Kapampangan food! I think peanut butter is savory and I want to see you try Malaysian food. And Indian food.
So happy to see Filipino food out in the area getting recognized by the public ty Mei
peanut butter is savory. It is not sweet and usually mixed with other sweet tings to balance it out.
