Ive enjoyed the evenness of the comp this season, I’ve felt more engaged with results week to week, where in recent seasons I’ve began to feel fatigued this time of year. But I do have the feeling when I reflect on the season at the end of the year there’ll just be a feeling nothingness because it does seem like as AFL seasons go, it’s never meant less

I feel exactly the same daz. The qualities of the game this year just has felt off, the umpiring the commentary the lack of consistent teams like sydney are the only side that actually feel like a premiership contender at this time. its been a underwhelming season so far in my opinion just the lack in consistency with basically every team has been a common thing this year

    I'm in 2 minds.
    On the negative
*There is a clear best team and there has been the last few years. They're usually winning it all too (2021-2023 have all been won by the ladder leader)
    * There are no really good teams. Sure there are 12 good teams (and Adelaide, St Kilda and West Coast have stopped actively sucking ass every week) but there is a good thing in having 4 juggernaut teams because then there is no clear pick to win the cup and they become massive games. So to do the battlers and the cellar dwellars. The marquee game is kinda dead
    On the positive
*It's great that you don't know where a game will go. A great run can be snapped at any time. A horror run can always be broken. Your team never feels like they'll never get there (I'm not bias, I support Adelaide). Everyone can have that against the odds win. Any team is gettable
I don't hate the evenness of the comp. I hate that there is 1 team on top and 2 teams at the bottom. If there were 3 juggernaut teams, 6-8 that could knock them off and development and has-beens below would be great. But it's not that. I can't say how to fix it either

You actually changed my mind on the second team point. As a North fan, second teams have been a crucial element of the North Melbourne supporter in the past 5 years, and this year I haven’t had the excitement of watching others games as I did in 2022 or 2023 with miracle Collingwood and Post-Rebuild Carlton, or Sydney Giants finals run. It’s round 19 this weekend and there is no team like that because they are all mid except Sydney. And I never choose my second team to be most likely premiership winner because you always go for the underdog.

Yeah you have a point. Whats gonna be the "story" for this year? It feels like the afl have focused so much on things like "evening up the comp" and technical free kicks that make no sense that they lost sight of what good footy is and letting teams naturally compete. ie. It feels like things have been engineered to be this way and didnt happen naturally. I dunno man lol

It's looking like there'll be a super high bar to make the 8, and a super low bar to make the top 4. Very odd year. Personally I think the issue with this season potentially not feeling exciting isn't that 2nd-13th is so close, it's that Sydney look so far ahead.

  • @carlocarbone2859

I don't think I'm personally enjoying footy as much, and that should be the main focus.
I know my team is in 14th but the fines/suspensions general umpiring guidelines have made the game unpredictable.
Would really just love the game to not have the grey area of interpretation.
If you as a fan cannot tell what a free is that is a bad sign you should be able to know an outcome of a tackle missed kick out of bounds whatever it is and for the most part I could not tell you what is paid if you played a slideshow of parts of a game with the ump call hidden for the end.
Eitherway like you said pretentious calls haven't killed alot of the games but it is the non calls teams get away with either the umps do their job or they don't no inbetween right now.

On the up side, it is going to mean the finals could be bloody brutal? As in no way you could pick them. And final point, good game from your Hawks, bloody smart move to push your captain up forward. Some bloody great kickers of the ball in your side. That said, it is a frustration as a Freo fan, that my boys can't win games in Tasmania.

If I be honest, I don’t think hawks can win the flag this year but if we don’t win it I’m going for the blues as my mum and sisters are Carlton fans. I like the fact that there’s no clear 2nd as it keeps me guessing who else will challenge and makes it more exiting for me. Just my opinion.

Still confident in Fremantle's Top 4 and Finals chance, that game against Hawthorn wasn't a heavy loss, (By the way Daz, hats off to the Hawks, those blokes beat us fair and square, and hopefully The Hawks can surprise at lot of people). The next 6 games 4 of them are home games against Melbourne, West Coast, Geelong and Port Adelaide and the Essendon game at the G and GWS at Giants Stadium are going to be tricky games.

This was a strange video to watch because it's an opinion I don't think I've ever heard before, so I was trying to wrap my head around the mindset that produces an opinion radically different from my own. My perspective isn't the same and that would have influence: I am not a TH-cam creator that has to deliver confident predictions on anything, I don't have Kayo or Foxtel so I watch way fewer games on average, and I've never participated in a tipping competition before. I also support sub-mediocre teams desperate for relative success.
I can see you are coming from the perspective of what the season's narrative is going to be, and having a super-even ladder makes that muddled. But I don't want to watch an era of dominant teams vying for supremacy, I'd rather watch a competition of flawed and comparable teams eking out victories due to their slight advantages and disadvantages. I remember a Reddit comment last week talking about the competition, and how on average coaches are far far superior, and the league doesn't have the true dud coaches of Neeld and Primus anymore.
I will admit as someone that goes on Wikipedia deep dives on other seasons and finals campaigns that the current storylines are going to be mostly lost to history. I understand your comments about how the even competition imposes more importance on umpiring, fixture fairness, and individual player decision-making. But I want to live through this moment before everything returns to the eras of dynastic competition.

I love not having a clue who is going to win. Yes umpiring sucks this year; but that's because the AFL have made it so difficult to umpire the game. Also hate the appeals when someone has been suspended: IT SHOULD STOP AT THE TRIBUNAL. The draw is the worst possible outcome that they could have come up with. F*** pre-arranged Blockbusters - The football fans (ALL OF THEM) should be able to expect that thier team has a fair run at the season, and that certain 'favoured clubs' do not recieve un unfair advantage.

This will probably come back to haunt me, but I can't shake the feeling that the Swans aren't that good. There's a decent chance they lose this week to the lions, port in round 21 can be a problem if the power can pull their finger out, the pies have a pretty good record in Sydney from memory and they'll face a desperate Dons at Marvel in round 23. Now maybe they don't lose any of those games, but I think there's a 50/50 chance that the swans are brought back to the pack. Double that with Carlton's absolute dream run home, the cats have a good draw, and so do the lions. That's 3 contenders right there. Carlton have some brain farts but they have a flag-worthy team and will live at the MCG in September. Geelong can look slow and vulnerable some weeks but their spine is solid and can look like world-beaters on their day. The lions are best-placed IMO to challenge for the flag with a great forward line and a super dependable back line and a top 3 midfield, but they for whatever reason can't find a second gear when the opposition really turns up the heat. Fremantle have already beaten them, and will finish 5th, and who knows? Their best is pretty darn good. But Sydney have flaws too, and take away the free hit against the Roos, and their last couple of games have been suspect. I guess we'll see...

I bet you wish your team was going as good as the Swans are? You don't get to be in the position they are in without being good. Have a look at their percentage. You don't have a percentage as good as that unless you are scoring far better than you are conceding. The Swans have beaten every team in the top 14 (those that are vying for a top 8 spot) with the exception of Brisbane. They play Brisbane this weekend, up in Brisbane, and I think they will win. However, if they don't win, they will not be beaten by a large score. Go the Swans!

It's pandemonium with Umpiring, rules interpretations and commentary. There used to be an art form to it all and now its basically a dysfunctional choice every week of which crap do you prefer?
There's no respect as a result to it and why? Well the Tribunal system would be the perfect start to rectifying things. Rules well.
Once upon a time those existed yet now they're just "guidelines" to a blind man. AFL needs to put the Umpires under a mutual training centre, told and shown these are the rules and that's it! No changing or adjusting, dig in your heels and let the game play out.
Commentary has declined to such a repetitive narrative of zero imagination. Paint the canvas like Bruce McAvaney and think of something new. Else you lose interest in making the game attractive.
