- We are a secular homeschool and all are welcome here. No curriculum is off the table if I think it is useful to us. Hi everyone! Here is our homeschool update for the month. I cover our main subjects: math with MathUSee, French and our new French tutor, reading, as well spelling, literature themes, extra curricular activities, and my new homeschool planner. Thanks for watching! #4thgrade #homeschooling #secularhomeschool
As a homeschool mom of 24 years, 4 grads and 2 still in school, don't set every bar beyond reach. She needs to win, feel accomplishment, finish with energy leftover. I'm all about children's abilities to rise to the expectations set for them and I'm not saying don't set some expectations high, just balance that with some shorter term victories.
Thank you for your comment!
Hi sweet mama! Just subscribed. That was so refreshing to hear you don't finish school at noon..It is something I have been trying to accomplish and failed. It is good to know its ok if we don't. Loved listening. Thank you for sharing! 🙏☺️
You are so nice! Thank you so much for your comments! You know, in truth, I don't really want to finish before noon. I enjoy reading and learning so much myself that I am thrilled Morgan is enjoying learning with me or next to me.
Thank you for your video. I really enjoy your thoughts on education! Have you read the book Know and Tell, by Karen Glass? I found it very insightful on the stages of writing. It starts by discussing oral narration and progresses through the different developmental stages of writing through formal composition. It was a fairly quick read, and helped me better understand the benefits of starting with narration and waiting on formal writing. When you spoke about writing it made me think of this book, and I thought you might find it helpful too.
I just put it on my TBR after reading your comment, thank you. Over this short time I've been homeschooling, I've gone from being interested in all the various curricula to the "how" part of learning. It was through understanding how Morgan learns math and watching her startling skyrocket after we left one style and tried another that really got me to focus on creating the right conditions for maximum understanding. I discovered two things 1) I'm not the teacher, she is and 2) Under the right conditions, she picks up books and guides herself. Sometimes I am not asked for help all day and have nothing to do but learn and read near her in case she does need me. I have a feeling that all kids are exceptional and we may cripple them WITH teaching rather than guiding. That's why I am waiting on writing -- so thank you for your note on delaying formal writing. It's nice to know others are thinking the same.
You definitely have an academic high achiever, which is pretty cool! Definitely not an average Homeschooler experience though 😂 My almost 4th Grader does great with school but needs a lot of outdoor time, social time, and free creative time, so more than 3-4 hours of seat work a day for her is torture lol
Thanks for writing! I don't know if it's as much high achiever as it is calm curiosity as opposed to a more active curiosity like your 4th grader. I find it so interesting how they all get to their goals by completely different paths. You and I are similar in that we know our kids and listen to them. I can imagine how wonderful it is for your daughter to have the freedom to be outside and be herself! Homeschool is a saving grace like that. Morgan struggled greatly, almost tortuously so, with a loud, active classroom. I think she has been spending this year coming down off that experience. If she was polar opposite, I suppose we would be climbing trees and doing outdoor science! But since I'm 52, I for one am glad she wants to sit down LOL! Happy homeschooling!!! 😃
I don't recommend the CAT for testing. It just isn't accurate. It says my son performs a grade ahead when he is actually behind. Not that you asked my opinion, I've just been kind of disappointed by it, and you really seem like you would use the data a test would give to help your homeschool.
Thanks a lot -- that is really helpful to know. I was on the fence and have been leaning towards the long version of the Stanford 10 as well as doing the DORA Diagnostic for reading, the DORA Phonemics Awareness test and the ADAM K-7 Math assessment. Have you done those? I thought we would take a whole week off school and just test... for fun 😂 And see how they all pan out. If anything, it would keep Morgan used to formal testing. Thanks so much for your input!
@@ThePattersonHomeschoolAcademy we haven't done any of those, but I hope you will share your experiences!! Testing can be such a useful tool.
I will. I think we will do all our testing the last week of school 20-24 May. Sort of like finals in university -- when you are done testing, you are done with school. And then I'll probably cover that as a topic over the summer once we get results back.
