When my oldest son was 12, he called a great horned owl out of our woods. I was sooooo astonished, I didn't get a photo - one of the great regrets of my life. But, the memory will never leave me.
It was dusk. And we could hear him Hoo-Hooing.
He came gliding out of the trees on completely silent wings.
He landed on a branch about 30 feet from us!!! He then spent a full two minutes checking us out as we gawked at him in awe. Then, he gracefully lifted off the branch and swooped down over our heads to get a closer look!
    Incredible!

Strange... we had a robin who mostly got along with everyone including all the jays back when I was allowed to have a feeder. All dozen plus species got along fine, even with the chipmunks and squirrels. There were a few harsh words exchanged but that rarely happened.

I love the blue jays that I feed all year round. They really love the peanuts I feed them in the summer and fall. In winter and spring they are fed a mix of seeds. When I walk out my back door they gather in the trees directly above the house. There is one jay who has very few feathers around his neck making it look a bit scrawny. I've named him Henry. Thank you so much for such a wonderful video.

Nothing compares to the gaze of a great horned owl! My first encounter wasn't at all like yours.. I was in Colorado Springs when one landed on the stop sign i was at. I stayed and watched him for awhile. Turns out he was stalking a cat, which the owners found in time to save him from becoming bird food. I was in awe, telling everyone I saw about it for days..

I live in the Rocky Mountains. I used to let my orange tabby, Pete, out on my back deck alone. Until one day when he was out there I heard the Magpies raising a real ruckus. I went right out, and there was a huge Great horned Owl sitting about 30 ft away on a pine branch staring at my cat. That was the last time Pete went out without me escorting him... Another reason for me to love Magpies.

    Hi Lesley,
Nova is a brave mumma!! Loved seeing the sweet video of Blue and Sweet Girl feeding their babies. The first thing that came to me when I heard the cry at 8:45 was how much it sounded like a kitty of mine from years ago. She had a high-pitched "double-meow".
Those shots of the GH owl are beautiful. I chuckled at Hatch - probably telling you all about it "You should've seen how BIG this guy was! And Nova tried to scare him off too! It was craaaazy!"

I could watch my jays all day, and yours, too! When they come to the porch for seeds, I always say "hello, blue" so now they know when I say that, they come for the seeds. They also call if I am not out there on time! They want me to know they are waiting - it is the few times during the day that I hear the squeaky pump handle call - the ones both male and females make. The cardinals di it, to - with their own calls!

May is my favorite month for birds. It's like seeing old friends come back. So much activity, love, babies, and hope. That poor owl! I kinda felt bad for him, being harassed like that, but I also don't blame the other birds for not wanting him there. I watched a gardner snake going across my lawn one day and all the birds were calling out and jumping around it, warning other birds in the area. I think it was mainly chickadees and goldfinches Kinda felt bad for him, being so unwanted! Beautiful work, as always Lesley!
Oh, and at 8:45, I thought he almost sounded like a "meow" sound! Strange indeed!

Great horned owls are a treat. I saw two great horned chicks at the foot of a lodgepole pine when I was working up in Sheep River for AB Fish and Wildlife. Rangers came up with climbing gear and hard hats to put them back in their nest. The adults were quite visible and agitated flying to and fro above the trees above us. Quiet, but obvious. Once I was lying in the grass beside a mixed forest edge (W. Quebec) and when I opened my eyes looking up a humungous Great Gray took off from the top of a tree. Incredible. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and great videography.

At first, when the Warbler went to the ground, I thought the red leaves were Cardinals! lol Beautiful video of the new Jay! Oh how sweet that Angel took the seed from your fingers after you were so kind to have it for her. OH WOW! It took me a second to see that gorgeous Owl! What a thrill that must have been for you (not so much for the Crows)! Crows sure can make a racket when they are upset and the whole family joins in! Oh my! It sounded like Squawkie was a Parrot for a second and talking "human!" I think it was, "Hey pretty girl." lol That shelled half-peanut was almost as big as Hatch's head. Oh I hope you get a tripod so that maybe we will get to see (literally) more of you interacting with "your" birds. The Grey Jay and "leach" - hey, meat's meat. It is so nice that Blue and others trust you so much around their nests and don't "dive" you like the one mama did to the G.H.Owl! What a privilege. When you said you truly enjoy watching your bird, I was thinking how I truly enjoy watching your videos!! Such beautiful dinner tables such as the one at 13:14. Oh how I would love to have a Crow buddy! I think a friendship/relationship with wild animals is such a wonderful privilege. Since I rarely get out, especially during the high temps of summer, I now longer have any wild friends. Your videos bring me so much comfort. I kind of pretend to be with you along your walks. Thank you so much for sharing and for putting up with me looooong comments. I look forward to June!

Hi Leslie. Where I live on Vancouver Island, the Barred Owl is quite common and a couple times I've seen a Great Horned Owl, truly magnificent birds. Thanks for sharing!

Enjoyable video Lesley, thank you. I really liked seeing the great horned owl and the yellow rumped warbler too. We have some barred owls around here, I can hear them but have yet to see one. I built a bird house this spring hoping to attract an eastern bluebird but was delighted that a pair of tree swallows nested and fledged a family instead. Very sweet birds, so glad they decided to use my birdhouse. Every year so far, a catbird takes up residence in our yard. He’s a mimic and it’s often hard to tell his chirpy songs from other birds, especially robins. But, late in the afternoon and early evening he changes to his gentle“mewing” call. Sometimes we hear a veery in the background, so nice to listen to them all.

Lesley, this is the best quality production! This is one of my very favorites so far! Thank you!I love your lovely, calm voice and all the information that you share. Even the graphics and the music that you choose are outstanding! The way that you identify the birds to us by their nicknames adds so much to the video. The horned owl was such a special treat! Angel and Mini Tim are favorites of mine. The gray jays remind me in form and personality of our Florida Scrub Jays. To me, your videos are more enjoyable than most nature specials because yours are so personal and include just as much interesting information, plus amazing camera work. I’m sorry if I just go on and on, but I really can’t thank you enough for the quality of your work and the fact that you devote so much time and effort to it. I wish I could impart to you how much it enriches my life to join you in your beautiful woodland walks with your amazing birds. Thank you so very much for every video you have produced! ❤️😘

Bird nerd, I’m one as well. My Jays and Chickadees are going gangbusters now. I don’t put out feeders for them. They eat from my trees. Natures way. In a month my small downy woodpeckers will be back. They nest in an Olde Canadian Bird cherry trunk.

This popped up in my recommendations, which is strange since I watch mostly car and wood working videos. This is so beautiful to see, the way you're able to interact with these birds is something special. It really put me in a good place to know someone like you exists. Your production, narrating and video quality is top notch also. I sub'd and look forward to watching more.
Oh, and on a side note, how could anyone dislike this? They must have a cold heart. I feel sorry for them.
