  • Here it is folks: The Grudge Match.
It's William Shatner vs Rush Limbaugh.
This is a segment from William Shanter's talk show, Raw Nerve.
A rare overtly political moment for Mr.Shatner and a rare overtly reasonable moment for Mr. Limbaugh....well, for a bit anyway.
Bill's expression at 1:31 is priceless.
Well, at least he made Rush laugh.
This is part of the Weekly Goofy Movie Clip feature of blog "He Had on a Hat" by Terence Bowman of The Vestibules and On The Spot Improv. Check it out at terencebowmanbl...

@@waynedavis936 The "divisions" will become more OBVIOUS, much like the BLM and Antifa people. I believe the battles ( very small at first) will be between the "right" and the "left" ( democrats). Naturally, Law enforcement and military personnel will have to choose sides. Democrats have proven to be Pro-Crime, anti-Police and anti-military so I doubt Democrats will have much of their support!
My only wish: I want to be alive when it happens! I just want to contribute to the LIBERATION of America from the Democrats (AKA.: BLM, Antifa, Liberals, the Left).

People complain about their car payment and the amount they pay for car insurance. In an urban setting for instance there would be no need for car payments and auto insurance because you could take public transport. It's that way in European cities. You don't need a car or a car payment or auto insurance because the money that you'd spend on those things would be paid in higher taxes and you get public transport that runs constantly and gets you places on time. It's all a wash. Everyone in London rides the bus, all income levels. There is no shame in it. In the US, you're considered a low life in you take a public bus. The wealthy won't touch it. Americans are greedy and don't care about others in our society. As long as we have what we want, it doesn't matter about anyone else. You heard Rush say it here. If you can't afford healthcare then you don't deserve it. And yes we can afford it. We spend countless taxpayer dollars on the most ridiculous things like invading countries in which we don't belong. The american people are brainwashed from children to believe that having healthcare for everyone is "communism". It's not. It's just not.

Mr. Shatner brought up the obvious point that if you have money in the U.S. you have access to adequate healthcare and if you don't have money you don't have such access. Rush compared this situation to a rich person being able to live in a mansion at the beach while a poor person has to live in a bungalow. This is a specious argument because living in a bungalow will not kill you but lack of adequate health care will. Health care is different from almost every other consumer product or service because if you lack it you may die.

And Americans are so confused about this issue. Good job, William. When you asked how do you know these things, that was a great question. Rush's answer "because that's what I do" was loose, unconvincing argument. Also when Rush mentioned a house on the beach and basically said that there is no difference between that, and health care, he negated the fact the a house on the beach is a luxury, and heathcare is a necessity. Water is also a necessity and is regulated, not free market. Rush completely negated the idea that necessities should be regulated (which is what Shatner was pointing to.) Shatner had Rush on the run, and all Rush could do is make broad general statements, with nothing to back them up. Smoke and mirrors on Rush's part.

This was a good interview, but Rush seemed too "passionate" about his conservative beliefs. Rush equated having health care with having a bungalow or house on the beach somewhere and not that health care should be a right, but like a house on the beach which is a privilege of the wealthy. Rush Limbaugh seems to believe that if you give human beings quality health care just like they do in England, Canada, Australia, and Europe that won't bankrupt them, then something bad will happen. What that bad thing that will happen is, he doesn't know. Rush believes if you give people basic shelter, food, education, and health care, then people won't work or put energy into bettering themselves and their lives. He believes people will just spend their entire lives being dependent on the Government and not try to improve their lives and their families. I have a higher regard for people than Rush Limbaugh does. Not everything in this life is just based on talent and skill, there's a big element of luck and what century and circumstances you were born in to. Rush is extremely wealthy, so it sounds like he believes that people who are either talented or just plain lucky enough to make money or be born into it deserve the basic needs of food, shelter and health care to be met. And he also seems to detest anyone that's dependent on the Government or family because of poor health, disability, or lack of talent or ambition or just being born in to a poor environment. We treat animals better than our fellow citizens in the US.

No, he equated having *good* healthcare with having a bungalow or house on the beach somewhere. @ 1:45 Shatner says 'if you don't have money, it's going to be more difficult' - to which Rush said if you don't have money you can't have a bungalow...etc.
Then Rush made the most important point that Shatner didn't want to divert to - the notion that healthcare is a morally superior requirement than housing. It was an important lesson in demonstrating how we think. Was lost. The point was this...sure you need healthcare, only housing is an even more important basic need for you than even healthcare. Food. Food is an even *more* important basic need for humans. You will die from no food only after a few days. You'll perish from exposure without housing. So...the point is that there is a long list of things we could excuse due to moral imperative, like Healthcare.
How can you argue for healthcare for all, paid by the government, but not food for all paid by the government? But not housing for all, paid by the government? Using moral appeals to basic needs by taking the labor from others is the argument, and it fails the moral test. No one's labor belongs to you - it belongs to them.
The moral is simple. Consensual labor. You have no right to take the labor from a person. It belongs to them. Their body, their choice. Just like sex, you must get consent to get someone's labor. That's the moral. And no amount of suffering or disadvantage earns you the right to take it from them.
Instead, conservatives argue for sympathy, and to lend a hand up. Labor by free choice. They argue against *laws* and argue for charitable actions. You may disagree with the moral, but that's what it is. It's not about not caring about the suffering - it's about not allowing suffering to make excuses to steal the labor from people - that's called slavery. And we ended that.

Where'd the interview go? Something happens where it skips randomly? I love seeing Shatner interact with two of my favorite people! Limbaugh and going to Michael Jackson's 30th Anniversary Concert in N.Y. City in 2001 albeit genuinely as an audience member though he walked a red carpet for the event!

Shatner and Limbaugh are two originals. Much respect to both men. Sad Rush is gone now, not looking forward to when Shatner goes next. This was a great bit and a model for how to have an adult conversation.

Somehow I don't really think so. I think instincts would tell me that Shatner is more along the lines of a libertarian himself. Because he's a smart man. I think given his career and success, it might be easier to describe Bill Shatner as being fiscally conservative, but socially liberal. A true example of a libertarian.

In this exchange at least, Shatner expresses a certain naivete about the nature of those who hold power over others. I used to think Rush was an idiot, and I said this to my brother who was a regular listener of his at the time. Many years later, I discovered that I had been the idiot and that Rush was the pragmatist I always wanted to be.
