Don't watch trailers!!!! Don't look at movie posters!!!!! Unless you don't care about spoilers....JUST WATCH THE MOVIE BLIND.....NO SPOILERS!!!! The marketing department that make the trailers and the movie posters don't care a rats hairy backside about spoiling the movie....They are not the people who make the movie or write the story.....Their only job is to get backsides in theatre seats and they will give away the whole movie to get those paying customers in theatres. I could name over 2 dozen movie posters that absolutely give away the entire plot and ending right there on the theatre wall or DVD cover......so just don't look!!!

I grew up in an area that looks JUST like this. As a kid I really thought it was in my area. There is even a town called bisbee (sounded like Bixby to my young ears). Tremors two is super fun too. You can stop at tremors two though. After that they go off the rails and even lower budget. Burt was my HERO as a kid. Having a rec room like that was my dream. I came damn close through the years. Nothing to brag about, just funny how this movie impacted my life.

One of my favorite things in this movie (and there are a lot of things I love about this movie) is that Burt and Heather are treated as being useful and competent. You'd never, ever see that today. They'd now be portrayed as absolute loons who talked a good game but fell apart as soon as real trouble arose, or as lunatics who did something incredibly stupid to get themselves killed. Michael Gross, who plays Burt, adored this role, and played it for years afterwards in sequel after sequel. It was quite the change of pace for him, after playing the hippy, peacenik father in Family Ties for years. Reba says someone always asks for an autographed DVD of Tremors at her concerts.
Oh, and sure, you could buy tons of guns like that, but it would cost you an absolute FORTUNE.

On the topic of collecting guns: In most states here in the US when you go into a gun store or other store that sells guns, you can take home the rifles and shotguns the same day you buy them. You just need to pass a background check. Before you can buy the firearm you fill out a form, the store then contacts the FBI to run a background check through the "National Instant Criminal Background Check System" (NICS). This can take from a few minutes to three days. If you pass the background check you can buy and take home the rifle or shotgun. Handguns follow the same procedure with an additional wait time in 12 states. The length of this time varies by state but is typically 5-10 days.
So, if you have the funds to buy the firearms, you could get them all in a week or so. Assuming you do not fail the background check (no felony convictions, etc.).

In most states, the only thing keeping one from having an arsenal like Bert and Heather is lack of money. That is a very expensive collection of guns. There is federally no requirement for training or licensing to own a gun, or many guns. There is no limit to the number of guns one can own. "Elephant gun" is a bit colloquial. It's a rifle meant for hunting big game, with elephant being the largest representative example. Calling something an "elephant gun" is a shorthand way to say that there is no animal on land that the gun is incapable of killing.
"Seismologist" is a real word. It's from the Greek "seismos" meaning earthquake.

I would argue that isnt exactly factual. Jaws had a ton more shark footage filmed but the director realized how bad the shark looked. By minimizing screen time and maximizing the effectiveness of the quality of what was actually shown it greatly improved the effect. The result is the same either way. Much better. Less is more.

As for "learning these things," there used to be some books more widely available before the internet got popular. Army-Navy stores were sources as well as military handbooks. At the same time, checking some out of libraries might get flagged.

3:36 - "Did he say grass dude?" - He said "grad student".
18:26 - "Look at the bottom of that bottle of juice, it's got a flat bottom. I've never seen that before." - When 2-liter soda bottles were first introduced in the U.S., they originally had a sort of "cup" pressed/glued onto the bottom to give them a flat bottom. These were made out of the same type plastic as the caps, and were usually colored to match the bottle (green for Sprite, blue for Pepsi, etc). At some point they stopped using them, probably to save money. I didn't know any company was still using them in 1990, but that's what it looks like to me.
19:57 - "What are you making?" - It's device to clean and polish used bullet shells so that they can be reloaded. It vibrates them in sand, which is abrasive.
22:38 - "Told ya they were clever.Disabling your Jeep." - Not really. It attacked the Jeep because it was making noise after it accidentally sent off the alarm.
The next three movies are also worth watching. Tremor 2 and 3 are sequels, while the fourth one is a prequel. After that, the movies went downhill and they switched to using all CGI for he creatures.
There was a one season TV show on the SciFi Channel, but it was pretty corny.
in 2018 Kevin Bacon returned to film a pilot for a Tremors TV show, however the show never got made, and the pilot has never been shown. You can find a trailer for it on TH-cam.

The girl is a Grad Student (not 'Grass Dude'). When they say 'Grad Student' it's short for Graduate Student...a Graduate Student (aka 'Grad Student') is someone either pursuing a Masters Degree or a PhD. A student in Med School ('Medical' School) pursuing an MD degree (Medical Doctor degree) or a student in Law School pursuing a JD (Doctor of Jurisprudence degree) can also be described as a Grad Student.
Also, yes, 'Seismology' and 'Seismologist' are indeed words. Not to come across as 'that guy', but these are words I've known since I was a child. They are common words. So, I thought you were kidding when you puzzled and asked if those words really exist...lol.

I'm guessing there isn't a lot of geological activity in Scotland? I've heard about seismologiets and seen siesmographs in real life a few times, even as a kid. And have seen a hundred scenes in movies and TV talking about seismologists.
And have read countless news articles about seismologists saying this or that set off the seismographs. Such as atomic bomb tests, volcanic explosions, earthquakes, meteor strikes, dam collapses, and more.
Also the ground shaking is called a "tremor" and the creatures in the movie cause a lot of those, hence the title.

Of those states, Arizona is your best bet for land and buying guns, if you stay out of Phoenix. You could get all those guns, with a few exceptions, as soon as you were a citizen and had the money. If you moved to Nevada(like the movie) and became a US resident, the easiest way to purchase a firearm is to become a US, and state resident. From there you could just go through a background check for each purchase. Each state has different gun laws.
Or, you could also take classes and get a concealed carry permit for the state, great for protection, good place to start learning.
You could also purchase as a non-US resident, but there is a little more paperwork and hoops to jump through.
Also, plenty of places like you described in Utah and Nevada, but wind will always be a constant.

What she was doing with the sand shaker thing with brass casings in it was cleaning the empty shell casings. Lots of people who are into guns reload their spent casings. Not only is it cheaper in many cases than buying new ammo, you can also tailor your loads (powder charge/bullet type and weight) to where it performs best in your specific gun. Seismology is a real science and seismologists are real professionals in that field. They study movement in the Earth’s tectonic plates that cause earthquakes. The device you saw that was measuring the vibrations the Graboids caused is called a seismograph, they are used to measure, detect, and research earthquakes. NASA even took some to the Moon during the Apollo missions in order to see if there are moonquakes and to see what readings they would get if they hit the Moon with parts of the rockets used to take the astronauts there. Turns out, there’s not a lot of geologic activity on the Moon, but it helped answer some questions about it.

The Graboid at Burt And Heather's didn't know the jeep was there, until it disturbed the ground enough to trigger the alarm. Since they key on sound, it figured "food". So, while they can get cleaver, sometimes they also just get dumb lucky. Stumpy, the actually cleaver one, is the one that they ripped the tentacle off of with Val and Earl's truck. The movie was made with a few things in mind: The creators were in the desert and came up with the idea of "what if there was a land-shark in the sand, and you were stranded on one of those boulders?". And in a more general sense, it's an homage to the old 50s era monster movies. Now, you've just gotta watch all the sequels and the tv series. They expand a lot more on the lore of the creatures, lifecycle, etc. And all are action-comedy with mosnters.
