Unused RWBY Fight Brought to Life! - Team JNPR vs. Raven | RWBY Fan Animation

- Before I go on a tangent, I would like to thank all the voice actors for their contribution to the project, you all did an amazing job!
Hello again!
Here it is, my latest project: Team JNPR vs. Raven. It only took 4 months to complete, and I must say, what a ride it has been. For starters, This fight between JNPR and Raven was supposed to take place during Volume 3, but it got unused. I remember hearing about this concept and being bummed out that it didn't exist. So, I did my best to remake the fight from start to finish.
Production during the project was a bit shaky. The voice acting went smoothly, however, things like asset production were not so good. I kept on having to edit the character rigs, causing me more problems like having to replace characters in a scene or redo animations entirely. The set the animation takes place (which is supposed to be remnant but doesn't look like it upon second glance) had to be scaled to fit the characters better, which caused even more problems. And yeah, it was a mess. But hey, oddly enough, everything worked out in the end.
If there was one thing this project taught me, it would be patience. If I had taken the time to prepare, then I wouldn't have had so many issues. But it doesn't matter now. The important thing is I got this project posted, and I can finally move on to the next one. You can call it lazy, but it's my way to keep moving forward (see what I did there?)
Oh, and one more thing. The fight choreography is okay. If I had to rate the choreography, it would be a 6. Because of this, I'm planning to start a master's study of Monty's animations, which I will post on my Twitter. So if you're interested, then be sure to check that out.
But yeah, other than that, this project was a great learning experience despite its ups and downs. Regardless, I do hope you enjoy it and stay tuned for more animations in the future. I remember Monty wanted to do a JNPR VS Raven fight but sadly when he died, they felt like it didn’t make sense for the plot but Monty had so many ideas. This video shows how amazing it is and how well done it came out. You done awesome 👏

How to include a JNPR VS Raven fight like this one: Raven decides she's getting out of practise and could use a good fight against strong foes. Then she spots team JNPR, remembers that Pyrrah's famous for her combat abilities, and thinks "They should do." And then she attacks.
(A bit random, but random fights are one of the things the show was known for, so it still works. As for the plot, just leave out Yang and there should be a couple spots you could add the scene to without disrupting anything.)
Yang: Mom, we talked about this, no trying to kill my friends.
Raven: aww, but I really wanna.
That Nora & Pyrrah mid-air attack was just as amazing as the stuff you would see in the show in the beacon days. Really friggin cool. I really didn't expect this animation to have such a big production value. Everything from the voices, (props to the VA's they sounded really similar to the characters's) choreography, music and animation were really on point. I loved how y'all somehow made the fight interesting and fun to watch while also selling just how out of league the others were in comparison to Raven.
Just... Bravo. Excellent job all around to the team that made this possible. What a great dedication to Monty and Shane.

Only thing I can think to make the mid air move better to add the actual back blast sending nora further in the air but mad props for bring this fight I never knew I needed to life

@@eren34558 there's a difference between being an apologist, and recognizing when a character was changed for seemingly no reason. All EF wants is for Raven to be represented the way Monty envisioned.

While not perfect, there's definitely that 'Monty' feel to the choreography that alot of true fans of the show dearly miss. Rooster Teeth may have upped the visuals in later seasons but it's not gonna mean jack unless it's matched by choreography. Keep up the good work.

Okay, that was freaking awesome. JNPR did a lot better than I thought they would, honestly. Raven was freaking awesome. You made her even cooler. If it's not too much to ask, you think you can animate her fight against Adam from the fan manga?
I'll think about it. However, I'm not going to be doing anymore large projects until my animation skills have improved.

I love love LOVE how you can tell that Raven was holding back until the end. Like how she effortlessly dodged in the first bit, took the time to block in the middle, and then at the end let JNPR get some hits in before oneshotting them.
She even used Adam's azai slash technique. I sense an influence from some fan sources of Raven training Adam.

This is the Raven I wish we got in the show. Legit I felt the sheer *presence* this character had.
Some minor criticism though: Pyrrha's mic quality was the worse... That's really about it.
The fight was fun, it was good seeing JNPR fighting as a whole again and Raven *do something* other than just Maiden vs Maiden fight. Good job Labowski.

Honestly this is quite lovely! Just a small titbit for the Pyrrha voice actor, from what I hear, they probably recorded in a very echoey room. A really easy way (even with just your phone) to improve that is by recording inside a closet (I’m not kidding.) I used to do this for some voice work when I didn’t have the option of working with great equipment.
Other then that, everyone did a lovely job! This was quite fun to watch. I look forward to whatever you create next!
I've heard that just recording under a blanket does the job pretty well too, would help by having the solution to echo be portable (and maybe a little more comfortable)

Very worthy of a like and a sub. This felt like the old RWBY and I loved the Pyra/Nora shield combo, just like in Players and Pieces but in reverse.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR FINALLY USING THEIR FIGHT STYLES IN A CREATIVE MANNER. I looped the Nora Smashing down pyhrra onto raven shot like 10 times. It shows off the character interaction and fight styles of Monty's choreography so well! I miss when rwby fights used to actually be fun

Loved it! When I first heard years back that this was supposed to be a fight but was scrapped after Monty passed I was hyped then crushed with disappointment. But you just fixed that, amazing work bro!
1:40 I don't think Nora's fighting style works well in when standing within close range of a swordsmaster like Raven. Using a blunt hammer as a means of deflecting high speed sword strikes would be disasterous. It would make more sense for Nora to be keeping herself away from Raven, only to bring the pain down on powerful Earth shattering strikes, before quickly retreating.
Well she did do something similar in the food fight scene when she fought Weiss

For the record, maintaining momentum by spinning the hammer does heavily negate this as swords are made so that the tip moves fast, moving the whole thing still takes time. This is particularly true in the case of Raven who uses a very long katana variant. Raven strikes so fast because her stats are high, not because of a mechanical advantage.

This was Amazing and it only left me with two questions why Team JNPR and what epic song from season 3 would be playing lol Excellent Work.
This was pretty well done when it comes to RWBY fan animations imo, as you've managed to perfectly capture the feel and tone of early RWBY fight scenes, which is something even the actual series can't even do nowadays, so you definitely get major props for that!👍
Unfortunately, there were a couple things here that I do find could use some work. While for the most part was smooth and fast paced, was also VERY stiff and rigid in other parts, especially during the dialogue scenes. The voice was also not too great here, though it seemed to me that it was primarily because of the hugely clashing quality in microphones, and so much the acting of the actors themselves. Finally, I question the implementation of the jiggle physics applied to the girls' chests, as not only it very distracting during the most intense moments to see their breasts just floppping every which-way for the tiniest action, but also confusing in Phyrra's case, as her corset really shouldn't be moving like that.
While I did have a few gripes with certains things here, I did overall very much enjoy myself here, and can't wait to see what uou put out next, as you only been improving with each animation, so keep up the good work! 😁👍
I have always wondered how this have looked, and was very sad it got cut. This was truly spectacular and I cant thank you enough for bringing thus to reality. Love your dedication at the end too. Phenomenal work! If you're considering other stuff, maybe you'd like to tackle the Sun and Neptune vs Pyrrha and Nora doubles fight in the Vytal Festival Tournament that got cut in Volume 3? I have always wondered how that could have turned out and am really bummed it got cut "for time". Anyways, looking forward to future animations. Subscribed!

Wow you actually made team JNPR look cool that Hammer, Shield and sword combination was amazing. Honestly if you get to their fight, and want to have them just mother-daughter talk and have a let's see how you approve friendly sparring match i would be down. This is amazing i love it I've always wanted to find out what jnpr vs raven looked like from letter gate this is great and a great way to have yang and raven meet then whatever the fuck volume 5 tried doing.
Fun fact, there was a rough draft of a fight between jnpr and raven scheduled for v3. But after monty passed the team had no idea what the significance of it was so scrapped it. But later used some animations from that scene.
I wish this video was a little longer but glad to see something that looks like actually rwby and not what it's become. (I don't consider anything past v3 as 'real' rwby. It don't look or feel like rwby.)

@@aceknown3230 I'm actually not even sure if they did use them, even I read about this it was during v4 and they had some still frames of the right between jnpr and raven. The article went on to say that they were going to save this animation for later use.
If I had to guess though I'd suspect some of the raven fight in v5 were actually from v3, they did seem different than v4+5 animations and more reminiscent of older rwby.
Jnpr animation could've been used for the tyrion or knuckalave fight. I noticed they seemed better animated than the first fight against the gheist grim, that fight was terribly animated.
@yeh uda ladies and gentlemen, disliking a certain portion of RWBY mean you believe vic mignona did nothing wrong.
If I had to guess, Raven probably guessed (correctly) that Pyrrha was gonna be Oz's choice for Fall, and so she attacked them to see if she already had the Maiden power or not (similar to Volume 2 where Mercury used a sparring match to figure out Pyrrha's semblance). But, if this was still in the doubles, than this would probably be between episodes 4 and 5 before their match and before Pyrrha's talk with Ozpin, so she'd have no context to why this fight (except perhaps a vague clue or two Raven could drop). The audience wouldn't have context for it until the end of the Haven arc.

This was awesome! If I have some criticism, is that Raven felt a little bit too defensive, in comparison to the JNPR. Maybe it’s just the fact it’s 1v4 though

The Raven in this video wasn't even trying nor has she use her maiden powers to boots and she had enough strength to slice a fucking building with ease, this is the Raven Brawren that we should have gotten in the actual series and not the coward pansy that we got in vol 5, if this what we gotten at the end of vol 2, it would been a heck of a cliffhanger but it wasn't. Just a quick question; did you make this project out of love and passion… or spite? like so many rwby animations I’ve come across.
It's not so much for RWBY but Monty. I always adored Monty's work, and I wanted to commemorate him by recreating one of his scrapped ideas.

I feel like this would make a lot of sense from the volume 2 end credit scene we got, also loved the animation
What I like about this fight the most is that all the members tried their best and none of them were useless or ineffective. Even Jaune landed some hits but Raven is clearly way stronger. Even at 1:58 where he performs two slashes and tries to do a backhand slash when anticipating Raven's dodge, he didn't lose the trade because he did something stupid. He did his best and got out-skilled. That's how fights should go.
Also lets appreciate the classic callback to the Scorpion and Nevermore fight at 2:22.
That is an important and often easily overlooked element of losing fights, that the audience can tell the loser was doing the best they could, but circumstance, preparation or skill was simply not on their side.
This was excellent work sir. This feels like the old school RWBY that everyone fell in love with. I mean it says a lot when fans can choreograph better fight scenes than the actual production company

Longest intro to an r34 animation ever.
Wow...where was THIS animator for V4 and V5? I remember a V5 scene where Sun twirls his gun-chucks, like he did in V1, and the animator of the V5 scene said it took them a week to do that one animation. I dunno how long this whole fight took to animate, but CRWBY could've definitely benefited from a talent like this, after Monty's passing.
RANT: Also, that second gun-chuck twirling-scene automatically lost its novelty (wasn't even worth it for the nostalgia, really), because we could already tell it wasn't going to do any damage. Of course, it was all deflected by Roman in V1, too, but it was new then and drove the fight and the choreography forward with something new, flashy and creative. In V5, it felt like it wasn't even done to drive the fight forward. Only for the nostalgia. One animator wasted a whole week for a single, few-second scene for which there was little to no point, aside from some probable squeals of nostalgia from those fans who probably don't even think beyond "Yay! Sun did the thing!!" That one week could've been much better used for something that could've added something more or even new to the fight in V5.
I dont know if this was a real thing buy jnpr vs raven would happened in the show
I really wish we saw this in canon instead of the coward we got of Raven after Monty died. They even neglected the end credit scene where Raven and Yang WAS talking like it never happened!
She could have been so much more of an anti hero earning her redemption slowly in a reluctant manner for the sake of protecting Yang than just a simple deadbeat mother who runs away and is never seen again.

Nice Animation. I little stiff movements on some areas but overall not bad.
Great work on this! Raven using her different Dust blades for elemental attacks instead of as a pointy multicolour pen - even if it was just once, that's all I ever wanted from an action scene with her. It was the one truly missed opportunity with her fight with Cinder for me - a unique way to show a unique weapon mechanic shafted in favour of a floaty magic fight.
The choregraphy is amazing but the inside of the house I-dkjazndzan

The hammer spin looked off at 1:40 and Ren felt underwhelming. Love the callback in Raven’s team slash.
2:27 I'm surprised there is no crater from that impact. Guess Raven is that strong to tank the Pyrrha-Nora divebomb combo attack.
Ok this fight just prooves to me that Pyrrah and Nora carries JNPR full stop no acception. Now Nora's breaking her back and has been for years

Why can't RT do fights this good? It's a little rough around the edges, but has all the fun and intensity of early RWBY Monty fights. And yes, I'm one of the people who think the switch to Maya or whatever helped kill the fights. Not a single good fight on that platform.

That was really cool
To those who wonder what sense this fight would make, remember that Monty is also the reason for the end credits scene in V2 where Raven meets Yang face to face, claiming they have much to talk about. Monty had a very different idea for Raven as a character than what we got, so who knows what would have been
Jaune never would have stuck that landing... anyway, I've always assumed Raven kicks their butts, but leaves when she realizes Pyrrha doesn't have it yet. Would've made that conversation about hunted maidens a little more interesting, but that's what happens when you try to stretch out a series to last as long as possible.
See the concept for this fight which comes from like the late V2-early V3 production era and actually predates the Maiden concept, which Monty came up with late during the plotting of V3 by which point Raven was possibly already cut out of V3.
It was just an idea he had that he thought was cool but they couldn't find a way to naturally work it into the story basically.
Dang, it's like I'm watching the first two volumes of RWBY again! That parts I especially loved were Jaune being a capable fighter (landing on his feet and arming himself during Raven's initial attack as well as attacking Raven and blocking a few of her attacks), Nora and Pyrrha's aerial combo at 2:18, which reminded me a lot of their combo against the Deathstalker, and Raven's Nevermore attack.
Jaune has some balls to land a hit on Raven even when it didn't much anyway.
I'm not gonna lie...that was GOOD!!!! Like the effort is 100% there. And I take my RWBY very seriously. As it is my first and only FAVORITE show (I've liked shows but could never call any my favorite until rwby came out) please please please never give up on your animation and make more!!! The scene where it faded to black and said "nevermore" UUUUUGH that sent chills down my spine!!!! Never give up!!!! You'll be a pro in no time
Amazing as hell, very in tone with the action of the series, pretty on point voice acting, not a bad excuse for raven and jnpr to fight, my own problems are the audio quality of Prryha and some of the jiggle physic, especially with Pyrrha and nora chest, just goes all over the place, I understand things like hair or even Articles of clothing, but that's a bit much
I miss you, Monty.
3D isn't my specialty, but you should really play with your ones, twos, and threes. Adding more frames to slow down a hit and make the audience focus on it more, or lowering the space between frames to pick up the speed for faster combat.

@yeh uda For scrapping this fight and moving the already mostly animated Yang vs Adam fight to vol.6 (and just having Adam one-shot Yang instead) as soon as Monty was not precent to push his own vision?

@@kingraplhmativo5178 I think initially it wasn't Adam's semblance and was more an aura technique most experienced veterans could use before Monty died in pre season3 animation even Blake used to do those purple slashes(she must have learned that from Adam). Adam's semblance was probably much more powerful and something else entirely (afterall it was powerful enough to disintegrate a tank sized mach).
I personally believe aura was a concept much more similar to Haki from one piece.
Now this show has gone through so many retcons that nothing makes sense anymore.

I wish I had the talent and patience to do this type of animation because I have been wishing for someone do so some Ozpin MMD animation because there totally should be more Ozpin animations since we’ve gotten so little.

This was just a thought about that. Since monty did had this Idea, and most of the team found it didn't make sense... Jaune is a really REALLY important character to begin with. Otherwise, he wouldn't just get into Beacon Academy. He just didn't have much development because all focus shifted to Ozma, maidens, Salem, relics basically filling the plate too much and without order, hence vol 4 and 5.... Anyway, Ozpins knows something about him, something important that he'd let him join his school. That made him a target for Raven since she knows the truth about Ozma, she could have hunted him down so she could use him as a hostage or something like a warning to NOT touch her daughter or lure her into being a pawn. Hence why that last scene at the end of Vol 2 where Yang met with her... welp that's just what I thought...

2:24 you’ve gotta be kidding with the boob physics. I get the praise you’re receiving but I don’t get how practically no one has pointed that out. Other than it’s actually so unnecessary and distracting, it’s unlike Monty altogether. Even Yang wasn’t given boob physics. I can’t get over how creepy it is to find it necessary to give them boob physics when so much of the actual physics of the fight is being ignored.
Yang did have boob physics in RWBY. But yes I agree, the jiggle was overexxaggerated. Though with how everyone else goes in this short, I wonder if it's part of the animation software itself. If I'm not mistaken, that appears to be Poser animation, which is... well, bad to work with.
This is reminiscent of the RWBY I knew and loved. Now if we could just compile the rest of the scrapped ideas, make a story that connects the scenes, and make an entirely new canon unlike where RT is right now...
