    Problem! Now you got a blister
    - If it is small, don't pop it but try to protect it. If it is large, pop it with a clean needle + thread. Leave the thread in the blister to keep it from resealing, and then protect it. Change plans & slow down.

    For many years now, I have made all the various dressings for wax jackets, coats, jerkins, gaiters and chaps and also make saddle soap, leather dressing and waterproofing wax/oil mixes. They are easy and satisfying to make on a winter's evening and you have full control over what goes into them. I make them in batches to last me a few years, but always run out sooner than I expected as I end up giving them away to friends. Almost all ingredients I use are natural and eco friendly. [The exceptions being some Paraffin Wax and, recently, Microcrystalline Wax. Another thought... if you have gone to the trouble and invested time and effort to make good treatments, and always have it to hand, you are far more likely to use it on a regular basis and take good care of your boots. My favourite boots are 45 years old and still in good shape and waterproof.
    When you look at the price of raw materials [even without bulk purchase discounts], commercial producers must be laughing all the way to the bank..

    Martin, savage presentation on this video! Well done! Back in the 80's it was Dubbin we used religiously, with bare hands, because the mother would kill ya for robbing the marigold gloves 🤣🤣🤣. It worked great, and as you say, care and maintenance of boots is very necessary. I suggest for your next video, talk about the gaiters you use and how to fit them, why you use them, benefits of using them etc, etc,. Take care out there lad 😉

      🤣🤣 my delicate hands need gloves 🤣🤣🤣 marigold gloves. Jasus haven't heard that in years. 🤣 Dubbin wax is brilliant. I actually ordered beewax.. wanted to try it out. Ever try it?
      Great idea about the Gaiters. Will do.. working my way up the body to my hiking jocks. 🤣

    Great tips thank you 😎 Do you think the wax will have any impact on breathability?

    • @soletrail
      @soletrail  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well I am not sure how breathable leather boots are but when you have the right insoles and socks you will be fine. The wax doesn't seem to make a difference anyways. Very important to have the leather treated. 🙂

    What do you do with the fabric under the laces? The polyester stuff?

    • @soletrail
      @soletrail  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Spray with waterproofing. Only thing you can do. Older boots were softer leather in that area but to save weight they started using fabric. Which is fine. It's the Gotex on the inside that will keep you dry bits all about keeping the boots conditioned and keeping the leather from soaking in water. They can get heavy. 🙂

    Hi!
    I’m new to leather boots, so your video helped lots! I do have a question though; when should I use leather conditioner and when should I use wax?
    The guy that sold them to me in the store recommended conditioner, so that’s what I got 😅

    • @soletrail
      @soletrail  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello, thanks for getting in touch. So you can just use one or the other. The rule of thumb is at the start, condition boots until fully soaked in.. leather can dry up in time so you need to condition. But not over condition. Best way to look at it is, when the water stops beading on your boot.. it's time to condition. You can also get Nikwax waterproofing cream.. so if I were you, stick with the condition cream... Spray boots with waterproof spray the night before heading out. You will know when it's time to give them a treatment. You can check if the water is beading after your hike when the boots are dry. So, no beading means condition time. Wax or conditioner do the same thing so go with what the guy at the shop said. What boots you go for?

      Thanks for the quick reply!
      My boots are a pair of Hanwag Banks SF Extra Lady LL.
      I actually got them half a year ago, but only now have the leather started “getting wet”. I use them daily, now that it is colder and icy here in Denmark. I really enjoy them and hope that they will last for ages and ages!

      @@AlwaysRiddikulus great great choice of boot. I love my Hanwags. The grip is insane. Denmark is on my camping list. Enjoy the boots. Take care of the boots and your feet will thank you. Happy to help anytime. ☺️

    If I wax the boots, and at night put them in a boot dryer over night. Would that still be good or no? Thanks.

    • @soletrail
      @soletrail  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolutely. Once they are waxed they will last you are few hikes. Use waterproofing before each hike.
