To answer your question, it's the stand of an ancient farm table. The top was removable and those squares goes under the top table to stabilize it. If it's too low, it's because they cut the feets. If you work (clean and varnish) the base you can put a wood top if you want and you will have a table. You just have to adjust the feets. That's it. Simple is that! My grandmother have one 50 years ago (at least). That table was done to use it outside and you can move it everywhere you want. Note: I am French and try to explain it the bestI can. Hope it's going to help. :)

Bienvenue! 🙂 Actually in my house I have an antique table. I went to someone who restore them and he said »The feet of your table have been cut» I said what? She is too low. And he fix it, he add an extension on the legs. Nobody can see them. You should see this farm table, a real beauty! Her restauration cost me the price of his cost but I do not mind. She remind me the beautiful and charming summer house of my parents ❤ A loving place we used to go younger. Au revoir! Bon succès avec tous ces travaux.

They are coastal redwood trees.Sequoia Sempervirens. They may have been planted to resemble a naturally occurring cathedral ring. The main tree is in the center and basal sprouts grow around the tree. When the main tree is cut down or dies the outer sprouts grow in a ring formation around the stump. Some of the rings are very large. The one on my property is about 15 ft in diameter. We affectionately call it our Fairy Ring.

I remember seeing a table base like that , antique picnic table that could be folded and stored every winter. It had a huge round table top. Back then boulders would have been used under the legs to avoid wet rotten legs and help level it on uneven ground. The picture I saw looked like between 12 and twenty people seated around it .❤

I also believe it’s a base for a table. Maybe it’s for a coffee table? And not as old as the chateau but left behind by previous owner? I have a similar base w/o the square notices that acts as a serving tray stand or can be placed sideways like a lower coffee table etc…. The stand looks somewhat like that. Just a smaller version.

My grand parents had one of those suports. It was used as a drying rack. They had boards that went from leg to leg with slats that went across, like a bed frame. They would hang foods to dry or box screens with grapes, corn or whatever. It was extra space during harvest time.
    Hope that helps.
Thers was not that fancy. Grandma would also use it as a quilting frame.

A tarp put under the hole in the floor will catch all the plaster and bits. It makes for easy cleanup. Once you pulled all the wood out, it is just plaster left. Picking up the tarp by the four corners then putting the plaster bits into the bags. Demo is always messy, knocking down concrete and bricks is never easy. So rewarding when it is all done. Since you originally were from Connecticut Amanda you will know LI sound and the North Shore of LI . This is where I live. On my way to my brothers house one day I pass an old cemetery. There are deer there often, many of the homes below sit on the sound. I saw a truck on the side of the road. A man sitting there in camouflage. Not something we normally see here. Concerned people with children, dogs and generally all living things called the local police. This man came here from Connecticut because he saw on one of the beaches across the sound an “ 8 point buck”! I won’t go any further but many of us started our response with “ What the absolute #!*…”I had seen the buck crossing the road one morning. I stopped let him cross when he got into the woods he stopped turned and looked back at me, his eyes were staring at me he was stunning. I told him please be careful. Probably he was staring because this crazy lady was talking to him. But I’d like to think he was thanking me. Love your channel. I appreciate your love and care of animals. Please be safe , maybe orange vests when your out there. Your land is beautiful.

Ah, but the locals don’t think like that in France. They do respect property boundaries per se but the hunters will have always been able to hunt wherever they normally hunt. They generally respect changes but not always happily. However, I think that it should be vital to wear a yellow vest to make yourself more visible just in case you get an unhappy hunter, especially if the boars are making their happy breeding home on their land. The farmers will become increasingly frustrated if that happens.

So many good ideas in the comments - it looks like you have a really handy multi-use thingy there. One rectangular top makes it a coffee table, bench or coffin carrier - add some extender blocks and now it's a console table, an extra space to sit canning jars as you preserve your apples and other produce, or open it up all the way and pop on a huge square or round picnic table top. Maybe that one rotted looking piece can be wood-hardened and filled. What a fun project for your 'spare time' if that is even in your current vocab.

If a twig bears needles in groups of two, three, or five, you can safely call it a pine. If the twig carries its needles singly, it's a good bet you've got a fir or a spruce. You're welcome.

I suggest putting in a water trough for the donkeys (so they can’t turn it over) and running a water line down to it. Hauling water is not good for the back. Digging a trench for the water line would be fairly easy with all the rain you’ve had. The sooner you do it, the longer you get to enjoy it.

The "Table' is indeed a casket stand. The reason for the height is so that the body sits at about 1m with the lid off. the tops of the table are designed to fit in the bottom corners of the casket as there is normally a void in the bottom. OR, in earlier years of casket making a table top was place on the legs and the casket sat on that. These were portable tables as churches didn't need them sitting around taking up space. When I lived in Germany there was one of these in the garage. The garage owner explained to me what it was.

It looks like it may be a casket bier. Family member had a funeral home and this looks like a homemade one, maybe for a particular family members final journey. There may have been cross cuts of wood that slipped over the post ends to prevent it slipping. Either way it is a creepy fun find.

We are cold here in Canada and now we are getting so much snow. You are lucky that you don't have to shovel snow or blow snow. I love your property and the size of the Chateau, also the charm of your cottages are worth the price of charging an admission. Wow so charming. I'm in the same camp as you with the hunters. Years ago I used to ride in the woods and they would trespass and I would freak out at them and called them some dirty rotten language. Years from now you'll look back and chuckle about your work etc. Keep your spirits up. This year will be a great year for you.😊

Definitely the French equivalent of a farm workers table. In the states, most farms had gateleg supports that were pinned open with a hook and eye. Farm workers were then fed at these tables. After finishing the gatelegs were folded shut and table leaned against the barn wall. We have a twelve foot long one that we refinished and use everyday!

You have a gate leg table. The top is apparently lost, but it’s “portable” (snicker) in the old times sense. And your trees appear not to be Sequioa’s or Redwood- but Western Red Cedar. They are now found throughout Edwardian gardens, hardy and with insane growth rates.

Cold in the US too (about 2 degrees F. above 0), and a stiff wind, but little snow, maybe 6 inches. I would put a good fence around your property, a good fence makes for good neighbors and buy about a dozen goats. They will eat the undergrowth and keep the weeds down. The donkeys and goats should get along well. And if you buy the right breed of goats, you could milk them and make your own goat cheese😁

I agree. Been told by goat and donkey owner that the donkeys protect the goats. They have five goats, plan to buy at least two more, and two donkeys. However, they have a fence around their acreage. Hello from frozen Oklahoma with single digit temperature, minus double digit wind chill, and snowing with mild wind of 13 mph as I write. Don't have much time for YT, but you're at the top of my list.

Having lived a long time in the Middle East, I've seen more than a few finely carved folding wooden legs which accommodated large decorative copper or brass trays usually for serving guests, who are usually reclined on low 'floor couches in Turkish or Arab sitting rooms. A feast of lamb and rice might be carried into the guests on large round or rectangular tray and placed at a comfortable level for guests reclining on 'low sofas.

A coffin stand seems to make a lot of sense. It folds for easy storage. It's a good height so that family and friends can view the body easily and the decoration on the legs would be fitting for such a purpose in a well to do family. It would be interesting to find out for certain what it is.

Your mystery object could be a “convertable”. We own a smaller version. Ours makes a round table, yours perhaps a rectangle or oval?
One side of the top is finished wood like the legs the other is felted for a games table. Ours is smaller and really low too. One of the top legs has a spring on it where you slide the top into. They fold up and are placed along a wall until needed and the table top balances vertically across the front on the decorative part of the legs.
Hope that makes sense! I’m halfway through my morning coffee here in Calgary Alberta and for about the 6th day in a row here it’s-35C with a -46C wind chill so I’m little addled. 🥶

Bath description was perfect and hysterical! Solid concrete? No way! I immediately heard that shot. I understand hunting but agree about safety. My husband is a veggie for over 50 years. I will eat meat sometimes, seldom really. The day after he finally arrived, after we bought, was hunting season. Since then he puts food outside, apples and such, for the deer now. We also had a pine fall near our house. What an expense to just get it hauled into the back field. You've an undertaking there, with trees. Excited to watch the progress! Lots of volunteer trees. Piece looked like a short table of some kind, to me.

The wooden base looks like it had a wooden top that sits on the leg fittings. I have seen these benches sometimes upholstered in front of open fireplaces so people could sit and warm themselves by the fire. It can be used at the foot of beds, in hallways and under windows. It could be placed behind a lounge as a table or a bench making it two sided if it is placed in the middle of a room. It could be placed in front of a chaise lounge. I have seen them in a lot of the historical movies/shows, 1800-1900s eras. It could be upholstered and used in the middle of a dressing room or walk in closest. Could be used as a bench that goes under a hanging rack or wall shelving. Depending on the height of a lounge can be used as a coffee table. If it is knee height it could be used as a bench for a dining table.
