I used to love Picard surgelés when we lived in France. Although the quality of frozen meals has improved here in Canada, we still have nothing that compares to the quality of Picard. Glad you had your power restored (finalement!) And I had to laugh when you wondered where the French power crew was - maybe on their lunch break? Answer: most probably 😂. As North Americans it’s hard for us to get our heads around the fact that the French take quality of life very seriously (forget efficiency and productivity). They work to live, they don’t live to work if you know what I mean. Same philosophy with their food. I remember the IBM cafeteria in Paris where they served wonderful 3 course meals for lunch, with either a cheese course or a dessert (most would take the cheese naturellement) and where you would get nice little wines. Because how can you have a nice lunch without a caraffe of wine. Lunches would easily last 1,5 hours and were never ever rushed. That would be bad for the digestion 😉 good luck with the garden and the kitchen. I’m looking forward to the progress. Cheers from a slightly snowy Ottawa, Canada 🇨🇦 ❄️

France has consistently been at or near the top of productivity comparisons with other EU and OECD countries.
      2022 working hours :
      France 1511 hrs
      Canada 1686
      USA 1811
      GDP per hour worked 2022
      France 100
      Canada 104
      USA 107
Canada has 11.5% more working hours for only 4% more value
USA "works" 20% more than France but for only 7 % more value
      Source OECD
Canade/USA = great work presence but to do what ? ;-)
"forget efficiency and productivity" you said ? ROFL

Your heartache in regards to electricity loss is a major lesson for us Australian customers. Our authorities and service providers are cutting back on providing mains gas services. Which of course limits our powers as individuals to choose what products and services we purchase. Basically our only form of service to homes will be electricity. Somethings to really reflect upon... Also in Australia in many cases not permitted to use wood burning as a power source... I guess I am thinking about how close to edge society is to crumbling towards a major change.

In 1998 there was a HUGE ice storm in Quebec Canada and electric poles and the power lines were coated with an inch of ice which caused the tall H-shaped pylons to topple like dominos. We had NO POWER for 11 days. Since Quebec supplies power to northern U.S. states like Vermont, Maine, they also had no power for a couple of weeks. There were linesmen from all over the USA and all across Canada who came to help put up new electric towers,& repair downed lines. There were hundreds of trees down in every community across the province which brought down power lines. Montreal & some suburbs had rotating power supply, but our town in the western burbs of Montreal had zero power just like you experienced. We had flashlights, a gas fireplace and a gas hot water heater. Thankfully lots of our local restaurants had generators and gas ovens ,so each evening we went out to eat. After that experience many of our neighbours bought their own generator so as to never be at the mercy of such violent ice storms again. As you found out a generator will really save you in a crisis, by supplying enough electricity for our furnace, kitchen stove, fridge, and lights. One thing for sure is you will never forget the long dragged wait for the linemen on the big electric company truck to arrive to repair downed lines!

My thoughts are with you. I was without power for 16 days due to an ice storm. Did the freezer to grill thing with the community, so we ate well. So now, with the skill set needed for being intrepid chatelaines, you must also have a minimal degree in Fuels, Electricity, Plumbing, and probably a whole lot more. So glad you are getting by so well.

After going through many hurricanes. And power that usually is out for 2weeks. We learned long ago to have gas stove and hot water heater. We have our home ready where we can power on the generator for our house. But since most storms come at night. I don't power it on till the next morning. And don't run it continuously to save on the gas. Only run when necessary. I have learned to keep supplies well stocked for those outages. You only have to go through 1 bad storm and power outage to sware, NEVER AGAIN...WILL I BE CAUGHT WITHOUT WHAT WE NEED!!! And you will always remember it!!😊 A Cat 4 or 5 storm is nothing to take lightly. And after a storm you don't want to run to town for any supplies. They don't have power either and only take cash in small bills. And sometimes don't have coinage to give you back. They run out. Àlso keep a couple battery operated 10 inch fans for summer outages. Also trying to not run generator unless necessary. Also plan for children in a storm and how to keep them occupied and busy. Puzzles and games or crafts. Let them set up a small tent and pretend their camping. Give each one their own lantern or flashlight during storm. Gives them a sense of security and saves you steps. 😊 We actually keep 2 generators for storms. One to power our home and a smaller one a 2000 that I can pick up and put in the car to take to family or a neighbor. The smaller generator also doesn't use as much gas. We have a getaway spot that we can power with the smaller generator as well if necessary. So we have several uses for the smaller one as well.

I'm an American living in Brittany as well. I'm not in a chateau, just a simple smaller house. But I did think about the possibility of power outages when I remodeled. All the rooms are heated with electric radiant panels. But in the living room I installed a gas burning fireplace which uses a battery for ignition. That way if ever the electricity goes off the gas fireplace will still work and at least 1 room will be kept warm. Since I don't otherwise have a fireplace it's also pleasant to enjoy the flame on the colder winter evenings.
I'm sorry to hear the storm hit you so badly. I was without phone or internet for 4 days but fortunately never without power. Our village was spared that though most around us lost power.

Your segment about getting your power back is hilarious, largely because we feel your pain - “have the contractors left or are they just at lunch”😂- we love it in the northeast corner of the Dordogne but we also know the frustration with utility companies - we are about to spend the next bunch of week and maybe a month without internet because an RV hooked the wire on his AC unit the other day. Last year these same wires were knocked down and repaired after several weeks but not fixed so they wouldn’t be hit again. c’est la France...

Truly hallelujah! Congratulations and Bravi! Glad to know you all are well. A part from you terribly well spirited wits, your weekly synopsis of reality (good, bad and ugly) stirred in with your humour, is truly refreshingly addictive. Even the simple chore of grocery shopping is intriguing. Thank you.
Some thoughts/suggestions: 1) Lincoln could get an online M.Arch in building 😊 very impressive! Moving to foodie/kitchen porn and suspecting that weather incidents are going to be a regular feature 2) Amanda: do consider a wood fire pizza oven in your kitchen along with a dry pantry (flour, rice, etc). 3) seeing you are doing no dig veg troughs; do consider raising them i.e saves your back. As you already have, use higher. Again in the walled cottage garden: keeping poultry (hens, ducks, etc) for the obvious and perhaps keeping some bees - honey and candle wax 4) highly approve of a Finnish sauna esp taking your generous woodland.
Loving your resilience, how you keep wits together and your adventure. Be well, keep safe. Best x

Ahh let there light... and there was. You survived. Lincoln did a lot of work adjusting the electricals. A wood burning stove is great for cooking, heating, boiling water and power outage. We had a farm house with both electrical and wood burning stoves. I use to enjoy cooking with the wood stove. You can even use them for a back up to heat the water tanks.

Bonjour Amanda and Lincoln, your resilience for survival is amazing, In America as you know, people would be crybabies, being without power for that long, I think mainly because when we lose power, we lose the internet, and that's the reason they would lose their minds. Lincoln is Frances MacGyver for sure. I am happy you got the generator. lots of "petits choux" in your garden, I love purple cabbage. The fox in with the donkey's has been there before. Thanks for sharing, Praying your power returns soon. Love From N.Y.

Thankyou for this supermarket tour. Living in Melbourne, Australia, I miss the variety of great fresh foods in France. I come back every 2 years with the family and we spend much time just looking, buying and eating our French favourites. Im ready now for another trip.

I look at your walled garden and would find it so overwhelming and not know where to start, but I saw what you did, you just start and have done the same in my own back garden. Thankfully my garden is just small, but it gets so hot here in Western Australia.

Living in Virginia on east coast of USA we were without power for 6 weeks because of ice storm that closed all major highways from north because of trees down and I was dealing with a mother who had pneumonia so it could always be worse. We had wonderful neighbors who helped bringing hot coffee and hot meals from their gas stoves. We had animals like you so we could not leave the property. The workers on the power lines were great. I understand soon they will be installing power lines underground so we won’t have to deal with that in the future! Hang in there at least you have a generator. We did not have that had to have a fire in fireplace so only one room was warm!

Use a campers 2 burner propane stove for cooking. Can be used indoors. And a campers coffee pot. Use the Mr. Buddy propane heaters. Purchse a hose to run from heater to larger grill size propane tank.😊

You should try bamboo paper towels instead of regular paper towels. They’re SO much better than paper; super absorbent and you can rinse and wring them out and use them again. You can even wash them in the washing machine several times - that way you can keep using them for quite a long time before they eventually start to disintegrate. So much more ecologically sound than paper. Once you start using them you’ll never want to switch back to paper!

Hello from PEI Canada. Here we can be without power for quite awhile due to the severe winds. We have a generator connected directly to our box so if the hydro goes out the generator turns on. Make sure that you have a certified electrical person to connect for insurance reasons.

Thank you for the food store tour! I will now go into the Picard and and E. Leclerc (which I thought was an electrical store). I am so grateful. I see exact Trader Joe’s labels on some of those Picard packages. I think we know where T.J.’s supplier is for these items.😏
