This is the mission that made me fall in love with this game. When I was playing it the first time, when menendez shot his left leg my blood started boiling. My heart started racing. I genuinely cared about woods by this point and it was honestly hard to watch how his legendary career ended. I have a lot of respect for a game that can rip those emotions out of me.
the coolest part of this mission for me is the historical context. While the scale of the fighting is largely exaggerated the whole storyline his historically plausible to what actually happened in the Panama invasion. Early in the mission when they mentioned "golf team is walking into a trap" that actually was a real event where a team of NAVY SEALs were ambushed by the PDF. They lost 4 and had another 9 wounded. It was one of the biggest ever losses for the SEALs.

Before Woods and Mason goes after Noriega in Panama, Menendez used the CIA agents under his payroll to kidnap David Mason and capture Hudson before the operation begun. Menendez forced Hudson to lead Woods and Mason with false information or else David will be kill if he does not cooperate.

To be fair Woods just got his legs blown off. That probably left him on subconscious/raw instincts to craw to the gun and kill Mendendez. That last head butt was probably the final knock to the body to ko him.

Here it appears that mason is mouthing something but only says “There’s something going on here woods” Earlier in the mission Time and Fate, once you go through the trapdoor in the floor and go through the compound, in one of the rooms you can find a piece of intel, collecting it will trigger a Dialogue sequence and that’s seemingly it, but if you remember picking it up and play this mission later, at this point in the mission, Mason mentions how the CIA memo in menendezs compound could be hooked to all of this, and this is the dialogue that convinced me later to shoot Mason in the leg rather than kill him. The game does a really good job of hunting to you that maybe that isn’t Menedez under the hood, but at the same time it doesn’t make it blatantly obvious either. Just a really cool detail that I felt like writing a small essay on lol
I remembering praying to Treyarch before BO2 was released for just ONE mission where we play as Frank Woods. And those prayers were answered and is arguably the best mission.
Even for a M-rated game, Hudson’s death was pretty f*cking gruesome O_o Edit 2024, BO2 is still the best CoD (especially in multiplayer), and if it doesn’t get remastered in 2025, I’m gonna start Cordis Die >:(
A reason not to kill mason even if you didn’t know it was him is because Menendez is alive in 2025. Killing “Menendez” in this mission doesn’t change the fabric of reality in change the plot of the next few missions. It should be easy to know that’s not Menendez
Woods is not psychic, though. You'd be changing the fabric of reality by keeping Mason alive. The point of the mission is to show how much regret, sorrow, and pain Woods is feeling so many years after for having been involved in the murders of two of his closest friends. You, as the viewer, are painfully aware that you are not shooting Menendez, but the big reveal is there to shock both Woods AND you.

He then tried to find out what the CIA had on him and tortured Woods and his men because he hates the United States so much. Mason shows up out of nowhere threatening to call for help but refuses. This leads to getting shot and losing his eye by Mason. Then he tried to save his sister from Hudson's support and then Woods accidentally throw a grenade and Hudson slows him down and killed his sister. Years later, He has gotten revenge on Woods, Hudson, and Mason for taking his sister's life away from him. This is the tragic life of losing his loved ones to a Monstrous Terrorist Mastermind with a heart of so much hatred because of the United States Government.
Accidental grenade? Bruh woods was fuming that he was tortured and all that and wanted menendez and everyone around him dead. That rage led to josephinas death.

I mean Menendez literally said to David that he will not kill him so maybe that was to taunt Hudson I know he was probably gonna do it but wouldn’t hurt if Hudson simply said no

Although I preferred the BO1 campaign, this mission is one of the best missions in gaming history.
At 13:26 when Noreiga told Woods and Mason to call their boss, Hudson, I knew something was wrong. Hudson was forced to listen in to comms at 15:48 when Noreiga asked for a weapon. Then, Hudson going dark in the middle of the mission. Noriega knew all along what was happening but Woods and Mason couldn't escape it sadly 😭
This is my favorite call of duty and I still love with this day
