I used the powder. It has the boswellia in it. Ot turned out great.
That's such GREAT news!
Thank you for this! I never even thought about using the resin! I’m learning so much! 😊
There's SO much to learn, and isn't it fun? 🥰
Great information, great video, thank you!
You're very welcome, and thanks for the comment!
😊do we need to use olive oil or can we use castor oil?
Castor oil is what I'd like to have it infused into for our use
Thanks for your video. But is it necessary we need to use only olive oil? Can i use coconut oil instead?
Yes, you sure can. :-)
Hi Heidi I love your chanel & I love your name btw..as it is also my daughters name 😊
Can I ask if I can use (Boswellia Carteri)Frankincense tears are they the same or much different? Thank you so much 🙏
Yes, these are fine! :-) Great name for your daughter!🥰
Thank you I appreciate it…just worried that it smells so different than my store bought frankincense.. hopefully it will change as it infuses..should I let it sit for 6-8 weeks before I notice a change in the scent perhaps ?
Hi, Nichole! If you purchased quality resin, it should smell VERY similar to the essential oil only not as strong. I'm wondering where you purchased your frankincense? It may have to do with quality, and that would be my guess. @@nicholeclarke2772
Do Ester at any time while you have the frankincense in the crockpot?
Yes, I stir occasionally
Hi Heidi,
After the water reaches the temperature you want when putting the jar into the crock pot, do you then keep it on high or do you turn it down to low?
I definitely turn it to low! You don't want to cook your oil.
Hi how are you doing mom. I have a question: Can we make essential oil from the frankincense that were collected from the harvest, for example, a year or more ago?
Resins, if stored properly, can last several years and retain quality. If it smells strongly and seems good, then it's probably fine. It's worth a try!
Where do you get your resin
Hi, Priya! I got this resin @AromaticsInternational. They're a sustainable and responsible company, and the products are high quality!
Frankincense is overrated does nothing , its just historically and traditionally used for incense only
Current and recent scientific research has shown otherwise. Thanks for the comment!
@@HeidiVillegasin the Middle East we use it as an alternative to commercial chewing gum, it good for the teeth and gums, also we dissolve it in water which we then use for digestive problems. Excellent for skin conditions. Excellent video
@@sheridant4711 Can you say something about how women use it and specifically pregnant women? So far I've read that gums/resins/oleaoresins essential oils shouldn't be used by pregnant women. I'm not sure if this is the same when dealing with an infused oil like in this video. Do you know anything about it?
Thank you for teaching about frankincense as well as its endangered status. Also, I'd like to give a shout-out about the DTD course in your herbal school. EXCELLENT! I'm a current student, and I'm learning a lot about what I thought I knew already and so much more. You not only know your topics well, but also how to teach them. See you in class 😀
Hey, thank you SO much! I'm thrilled you're enjoying the course! 🥰
Would it be possible to use castor oil instead of olive oil? Or should you always use olive oil and then if you want to make a mixture of Castro oil just add it to it? Thanks for the video by the way, I love it!
You can use some castor oil, but I recommend cutting it with another thinner carrier oil because the castor just doesn't help the plant release constituents very well as it's so viscous.
I was thinking the same
Half castor oil n half mct coconut oil. That's what I will do
Hello Heidi, I'm curious, why you chose olive oil as the carrier oil and not castor oil?
I find olive oil extracts beautifully!
Do you have suggestions for using this in skin care? I make my own but not certain on what % should be used? I make skin oils and creams.
On youtube you should watch a documentary called The Frankincense Trail by Kate Humble. It is really neat and very informative about how valuable it is.
I appreciate the suggestion, and I'll definitely look it up!
Hi Heidi, I too am wondering who you purchased your frankincense from? I'm so excited to try this as my arthritis is really flaring up right now. I think I'll cut the recipe in half though.
Thank you so much for enlightening me on frankincense. My beginning entry into herbal awareness is focused on herbs in the Bible. Thank you.

17 September 2024 Good morning, thank you for this very informative video. Where do you get your frankincense resin from? I haven't the slightest idea of where to begin finding a reputable source. Thank you for your response.
Hi, Celeste! I usually purchase from Aromatics International.
@@HeidiVillegas Thank you 🌷
What Can I use if I don't have a Crock-Pot ?
Any double boiler system that gently warms and not cooks can work. :-)
can we use this infused oil in soap making
Yes, you sure can. :-)
I was totally with you until you said you put a cloth in the bottom of the crock pot and leave it on high. It will burn!!!!! This cannot be right. Shouldn’t you put a few inches of water in the crock pot then cook on low or even just the warm setting???
Where do you purchase the resin?
I didn't say put the crock pot on high. That will cook the oil, and destroy it. I keep it on warm, which is the lowest heat setting. And yes....there's water in the crock pot.
@@HeidiVillegas I’m still a bit confused. Do you leave a towel at the bottom with the jar sitting on it then add a few inches of water let cook on warm….am I getting this correct?
Hi Heidi, I love your channel - so much great info! I had a question - What are your thoughts on combining Frankincense, Myrrh, and turmeric into an oil infusion? I have some skin issues I’m trying to get relief from, and I’ve heard that all three of these have strong healing properties. In your opinion, would it be a good idea to combine all three for one infusion, or use them separately? Also trying to figure out amounts that would be best to use. Thanks!
That's a great combo! Just keep in mind the turmeric may stain. You can combine them all....or make them separately then combine. That latter way would be the way I would choose, because then you can adjust the amount of turmeric infused oil.
I do the same thing I repeat the process with the resin of the the boswelia and poplar buds because why waste some amazing resins ❣️
Exactly!!!
Thank you so much!!! I’ve been researching how to infuse boswellia in oil and this was so very helpful! I really wanted to infuse it into castor oil (so I can reap the wonderful benefits of both) but I will infuse in olive oil and then add castor oil to it at the end. I just ordered from Aromatics! Thank you again for your informative content ❤
Glad it was helpful! And thanks for the comment!❤️
How did it go? I’m wanting to do the same, infusing frankincense resin in castor oil but concerned heating the oil in crockpot will denature or damage the good property of the castor oil.
@@carolinecampbell1250 I haven't tried it out yet. I'm so nervous about running my crockpot for 3 days straight so I keep hoping I'll find a different way to do this.
HI, I would love to know what you suggest as a ratio for adding this extract to a carrier oil. e.g. with castor oil. Thanks
It depends on your intention for the blend. Do you want more of the powers of the frankincense? The castor oil? Herbalists will make decisions about formulation based on active components, need, supporting herbs, and then those that stimulate function.
Hi Heidi I am concerned about olive oil especially virgin. Regular Olive Oil might be better. How about Avocado Oil what is your thought on that Oil?
I love avocado oil, and hemp seed, almond oil, etc. are also great. I know there's a lot of information about the quality of olive oil, and that here in the U.S. what we have on store shelves is garbage....but for topical use, it's really just fine to use...and I prefer organic.
Hi Heidi, loved the video, just ordered and going to make a batch. My question is how do you store the oil once it's infused? Do you put a tight lid, keep away from light or store in the fridge? Thank you.
I just store in a mason jar in a cool, dark room (my apothecary).
Hi Heidi, how long would you say that these oil infusions last when stored properly? I’ve heard anywhere between 1 month and 6 months but wasn’t sure which was accurate. Also, is it necessary to store them in an amber bottle or is it ok to keep them in glass? Thanks!
This is a treasure. Thank you ❤
You're welcome 😊
Can you use castor oil in place of the olive oil?
I'm not a fan of castor oil as an extractant....I would cut it with another good carrier (my own opinion, of course).
Where did you buy your resin from...
Hi, Christine---Please see the first comment for links, ok?
Hi Heidi, I will be looking into taking your classes soon - love the comments and answers. I’ve purchased the resin from the source provided, but what brand of olive oil are you using? I’ve like to give this a go!! I’m pretty excited to make this frankincense resin oil ❤
Hi, Darlene! I'm just using Kirkland Organic virgin olive oil--- GREAT news, too! I'm doing some live sessions next week here on YT, and my family herbalist course is opening up for enrollment week after next! I'd love to see you inside! For more information: healingharvesthomestead.lpages.co/dtds-sp-kaj-2024/
can this be used in castor oil
I wouldn't use castor oil due to its viscosity, but it would be fine to add a bit in at the end or into salves if you're making them. You could experiment with small amounts in the infusion too, say 1:8 castor oil to your carrier oil, for example.
how long does the resin last?
Being a resin, if it's stored properly and is of high quality, it might last up to five years or so. And if it gets "older" it's wonderful in incense!

Hi Heidi,
Thank you for all the information. If I were to infuse frankincense resin with The Ordinary’s Squalane oil (my skin is very picky and I wouldn’t want to change up my routine much) but without heat, how long I should be leaving the oil and the resin unbothered? A month or two?
Thank you in advance for your help on this.
I've never infused in squalene, to be honest.
save used resin for FIRE PIT IN HOLIDAY SEASON
Oooh...I bet that smells amazing!
How did the second batch turn out? Did it help as well as the first one? I cannot afford to pay that much for the resin you purchased. I'm needing a lot to make for myself and a sanctuary I donate to.
It's a wonderful oil!

Can that Combination Go Together You know thing’s may seem like they go together mentally but Practically they don’t. Like milk thistle tea it’s best tincture! So can menthol flakes go in my pepper oil for that menthol feel?
Yes, you can use the flakes this way! :-) Do some research on these because just a little goes a long way!

Hello Heidi, I froze my frankincense tears that worked great when grinding to powder. I got mine in the crockpot overnight so far. You said that your frankincense smells nice while you were working with it. Mine smells like a detergent. And I bought it from good company I buy other herbs. Just wondering your thoughts.
Hmmm... Well, there are different species, but they should all still smell similar. You should smell pleasant overtones of turpentine that's not harsh---kind of soft and grounding pine-ish scent.
@HeidiVillegas Update: They are back! Aromatics International doesn't currently have the Tears. Will the Frankincense Boswellic Acid Extract Powder do the same thing? Thank-you!
I'm not sure? If you purchase frankincense powder, that should be fine, though.
Where do you buy your frankincense resin.please could you put a link to where you purchased the resin and all your herbs and all the stuffs that you use to make your remedies.I will like to buy my from there please,I will appreciate it thanks .
Gosh, I need to update my Shopping Guide. I'll try to get to that as soon as I can. In the meantime, I purchased that frankincense resin from Aromatics International, a very trustworthy company.
Hi Heidi! Is this infusion mild enough to use on my skin or would I need to add more oil after it’s infused?
Yes, it's just beautiful for your skin!
Would you also make this with Caster oil??
You could cut a bit into the olive oil, but I wouldn't use all castor oil as it won't extract as many of the plant constituents.
what must that "C" be in the anti-c? Some of us are curious, please.
Personally, there's censorship going on right now, and I know herbalists who have been shut down. I avoid any discussion about three different "hot" topics and that's one of them. I make no promise of cure, treatment, diagnosis, or prevention, and I'm not a medical doctor. :-)
Can you screw the lid on the jar all the way on while it’s in the crockpot? Thanks!😊
I don't due to the heat build up.
Do you stir at any time while you have the frankincense in the crockpot?
I do.
I'd love to know which species you used and how you decided on which one to use for this infusion? Was there a specific purpose for the finished oil?
I used B. carterii for this batch. And honestly, I just love it in general for beautiful skin. :-) But it has many great properties, especially for fungal infection, etc.
I recently found your channel and I am so pleased that I did!
Thank you so much, Nikki!
Can I use castor oil instead of olive oil?
It's too viscous, in my opinion, by itself. You could cut the olive oil with it, though.
Very interesting, I'm interested in combining frankincense and castor oil.
Be sure to thin the castor oil with a bit of a thinner carrier to improve the extraction.
What kind of oil do you use? Extra virgin olive oil?
I like jojoba or olive oil most of the time. :-)
Hi Heidi, I loved your video and am going to order some resin tears and make this, my question is, I know that crockpots work with the lid closed to retain the heat, so does this work with the top off like that for so long? Does it still heat, just not too much? If that makes sense?
Yes, but keep in mind the water will evaporate as time goes on, so be ready to replenish it every few hours or so.
Thank you for the informative video Heidi. If you want to add frankincense essential oil to frankincense infused oil what ratio would you recommend?
I can't give you an exact amount because: The dilution you choose is going to depend on a number of factors: how much of the infused oil you're using, the age of the person/animal you're working with, the size of the person/animal, the needs of the person/animal (including constitution) and also what your intention is for the oil. For example, pain relief, grounding/meditation, focus/clarity, mood, skincare, and others..... All of these contribute to determining the number of drops you'll need.
I teach aromatherapy in our school, and our new course Aromatherapy level 1 certification is coming out soon! But I address safety and dilution in the Tribe and also in the Ditch the Drugstore course as well.
Thank you for a wonderfully informative video. Would there be a local resin that could be used as a substitute for Frankincense?
Pine resin is just wonderful! It actually has some similar properties, so I would suggest going with that one.
How much should you add to your skincare mix?
It depends on what you're making and how much you'd like. :-)
Where can I purchase high quality frankinscence ,do you have a company you recommend?
Sustainability is HUGE in my opinion, and I really like Aromatics International because Karen and Jenny Williams, who own it now, are very much into caring for the earth as well as providing high quality products. That's where I got that batch of frankincense tears, and it's the best quality I've ever worked with. I can tell it's not harvested using inferior means. I should reach out to them and ask if it's from cultivated Boswellia or wildcrafted....It probably says on the package, but I didn't look. In terms of an endangered plant like frankincense, please choose to go with cultivated if you have a choice. @AromaticsInternational And here's a link for you: bit.ly/AromaInt
Thank you ! I will go check them out.@@HeidiVillegas

Is the oil you made to be ingested, or is it just for external use? If you can’t say, I understand. I’m just trying to understand if I should purchase some resin from Etsy to make an extract, as I have Crohn’s disease and osteoarthritis and I want to get off the biologic injections my Dr has me on. Hello Heidi, I was wondering why you use Olive Oil. Can you use different oils that might be better for your face and skin? If so what do you suggest.
Yes you can!
@@HeidiVillegas Thank you! I'm soo excited to make this!!
Thanks for the lesson!! Can I use another carrier oil? Like castor? I’m excited to try this!! ❤❤❤❤❤

Hi @heidivillegas I was wondering instead of olive oil can you infuse in jojoba? How would it be with phantom pain with amputee?
It's worth a try. I can't answer this because it's a medical question, and I'm not a doctor. :-)
Can u ingest the acids orally?
They're usually extracted in a lab and standardized for capsules. In this way, yes. But I don't recommend powdering the resin and adding it to foods, etc. on your own. Do some research on this....In the meantime, look for good supplements from reputable companies that source from cultivated farms.
hello miss heidi can you use a dissfuser machine instead of the crocpot
If you want to diffuse essential oil into the air, yes. But you wouldn't want to put this infused oil into a diffuser as it's not an essential oil.
How much water did you put in crockpot
I fill the water to about 1/2 to 2/3 or so up the jar.
By chance can you use the instant pot?
I've heard you can do this, but I never have. I think there's so much value in traditional ways.

During hot summer months can this infusion be done by placing jar in direct sunlight?
Hi, NG---- I love solar infusions, to be honest. There's something about the energy of the sun.... BUT no----I wouldn't put it in direct sunlight as you don't want to "cook" your oil. Even in sunny windows, make sure it's an east or west window not a south window, as again, you don't want "cooking." Just a nice gentle warmth....

Do you have to use the crockpot or can you just let it sit
You can just let it macerate/steep for several weeks if you don't want to use the crock pot.
I'm just starting out on my journey, it's been a year since the first time I bought resins and I still don't own a crock pot so what I do is I DIY something like a bain marie (double boiler?) for maybe an hour or 2 and then I let it sit and I use something like a syringe to extract what I need into a different smaller container. I simply add new oil or newer resins into the same container. I haven't thrown out anything yet. I'm not sure if I should though but so far so good!
Thankyou so much for this, Heidi...great teaching... a good teacher always Explains Stuff, doesn't just Tell! 😊❤

Thank you!
Why in the jar than in crackpot and not just crackpot
The oil and resin will make a hot mess of your crock pot with the residue.
Hi, Geri! If you put the oil directly into the crockpot, it will "cook" the oil, even on the lowest setting, so the double boiler method allows you to manage the gentle heat better. Also---directly in the crockpot, you'd have to use more oil unless you have a tiny crockpot.
