Boost Energy Without Caffeine: 4 Caffeine Alternatives- Thomas DeLauer… Look, I love caffeine as much as the next guy. Seriously, I really do like caffeine. I always tout the benefits of it. But what I want to do in this video, is I want to give you four different alternatives to caffeine. I'm not talking about like fuddy-duddy kind of herbal ways to get more energy. I'm talking about ways that you can truly life-hack your way into getting more energy, utilizing various compounds that you can find on Amazon or honestly, very easy to find places in general. So, let's start with some of the basics of physiology when it comes down to creating energy. In doing so, I want to explain alpha lipoic acid and carnitine.
All right, so alpha lipoic acid and carnitine, you've probably heard of carnitine before, because it's marketed as a fat loss supplement quite heavily. Here's the thing. Carnitine is cool, but it's really when it's combined with alpha lipoic acid that you can get some actual energy that could replace caffeine. You see, carnitine allows free fatty acids to come from its storage form into the actual mitochondria to be used for energy. So carnitine is responsible for taking fatty acids from the cytosol portion of a call, into the membrane, into the mitochondria, which is the actual furnace where you create the energy. Without carnitine, that doesn't really happen.
But that's not the fun part. You see, when it's combined with something known as alpha lipoic acid, you get heightened energy, because now you're actually taking the food or the nutrients in the cell, and you're giving it the ability to regenerate. So what I mean by that is alpha lipoic acid's job is to add an acetyl group to ultimately create Acetyl-Coenzyme A.
Now I'm starting to get complex here, and I promise, I'm going to keep this video very high-level so you don't have to deal with my biology. But if you remember from sophomore, maybe junior year biology, we learn a lot about Acetyl-Coenzyme A. Acetyl-Coenzyme A is ultimately the building block of energy. So without the acetyl group, you just have coenzyme A. Coenzyme A needs an acetyl group. Alpha lipoic acid continually provides it.
So what happens is carnitine goes from the cytosol into the mitochondria, brings the food in, creates energy, creates ATP, really what gives you that spark, that energy. Then it's the job of alpha lipoic acid to create the acetyl group, so they can reattach and go through that process again. Without that, you don't make more energy. So when you add both of those to the mix, you get a very powerful form of energy that could truly rival caffeine when it comes down to mainly mental energy, because of the high amount of mitochondria that we have in our brain.
Now this one was complex, but let me take you down the path of another one that's a little less complex, but very, very, very fascinating. I'm talking about tyrosine, and particularly its effect on those that are sleep-deprived. Now, those of you that know me know that I have a little baby boy. Now he's my life, he's my pride and joy. But he also makes it so I don't sleep a whole lot and I've got a job to do. I've got to be on camera, I've got to run a business, I've got to have my brain being sharp. This means that I had to find a way outside of just loading up on caffeine to be able to get more energy.
Tyrosine has even been shown in studies to increase the amount that someone is alert or awake when they're sleep-deprived by three hours or more. So that means if you're sleep-deprived and you take tyrosine, you can put yourself in a situation where you have three more hours of alertness before you start to crash. I'll take three hours, honestly.
So what happens when you take caffeine is your brain overproduces dopamine. That's why as soon as you have some coffee come in, you feel good. You feel alive, you feel like you can take on the world. You start having happy conversations, because everything feels good. You've got caffeine. But the problem is, you're going to run out of dopamine eventually. That's what happens with caffeine withdrawals. You run out of dopamine, and then you don't feel good, so then you need more caffeine to create more dopamine and expedite that whole process.

1.) Alpha Lipoic Acid, Combined with (ALC) Acetyl L-Carnitine FOR HEIGHTENED ENERGY, 2.)Tyrosine especially for the sleep deprived & creates more dopamine that caffeine depletes, 3.) Cordyceps mushroom, & 4.) Theacrine

It’s been really great in combination with a few other things for helping out with the dramatic catecholamine depletion and feelings of stress/anxiety that comes with these kinds of drugs.

    SUBSCRIBED:
    This was incredibly valuable content.
I'm young snd relatively healthy yet was hospitalized with C-19. I was really caught by surprise. Especially since my pregnant wife only had mild cold-like symptoms for only 2 days (thankfully). Being a registered nurse, I thought I had done everything I could to prevent myself from getting it. What I failed to think about was my coffee that I would drink throughout the day.
Not enough people are talking about coffee (and really, caffeine in general) from this perspective. Caffeine is a diuretic. This means that absorption of many of the vitamins and minerals you take anytime near the consumption of coffee (roughly 2-3 hours after, maybe more), is severely affected. Zinc and vitamin C, two vitamins and minerals well known to support immune function, are needed on a daily basis because our bodies don't store these nutrients. If you sip caffeine throughout the day as I did, you likely won't get much of these nutrients at all, even with a multivitamin, because caffeine will inhibit its absorption. Calcium? Caffeine causes you to excreted through urine and feces as well. This also affects vitamin D as well (another vitamin known to play a role in immune function).
As an RN, I knew better, I just never stopped to think about it in depth.
Thank you for these great alternatives!!

If you haven't already, Look into adaptogens to balance your adrenals (Rhodiola Rosea, Holy Basil aka Tulsi, Siberian Ginseng, Ashwagandha) and learn to activate your parasympathetic nervous system (deep breathing, no screen/audio stimulus, resting still, yin yoga, slow massage and lots of rest/sleep). If everything else fails, then alpha/theta neurofeedback. Best of Health!

@@ama-tu-an-ki hi there. You seem like you know what you're talking about. I'm trying to quit caffeine. Do you think these supplements really help? Any other suggestions for supplements ?

I know little, so enough to be dangerous. People way more knowledgeable and smarter than me write this:
Heavy, continued coffee (or just caffeine use) can deplete:
      - amino acid *tyrosine* (fix with extra l-tyrosine or eat more Parmesan, soy product or lamb)
      - neurotransmitter *serotonin* (fix with extra l-tryptophan, or eat more pumpkin seeds, Mozzarella and lamb)
      - neurotransmitter *acetylcholine* (fix with extra choline or eat more egg yolks)
      - neurotransmitter *dopamine* (fix with extra L-dopa, or eat more tyrosine rich foods, like Parmesan, soy product, beef protein & beans)
      - minerals: *iron, magnesium, potassium, calcium and zinc* (get a good Thorne multimineral or eat more seeds, nuts, organ meats, and dark leafy greens)
      - vitamins: *B1 (thiamin)* (fix with B-complex, not just B1 or just eat more pork, fish, seeds, nuts,
AND coffee withdrawal can induce headaches, for which some of the following may help:
      - fish oil
      - turmeric
      - plain water (keep hydrated)
If you can't go cold turkey (recommended, just tought it out for 4-7 days, sauna/sweating can help a lot, if you drink fluids AND replenish your amino acids and minerals), then try going to light green tea first (less caffeine, buffered by l-theanine).

Can you do one on 4 supplements to fall asleep and stay asleep?
For those who have tried melatonin, Restavit etc?
My fatty liver and weight gain from keto and IF have returned because sleep quality and volume continues to diminish every night... this then stresses me out.
    Thanks.

Two suggestions, L-Tryptophan about an hour before bed, and gelatin (~1-2 tsp) on an empty stomach, also before bed. In my experience though, after a week of gelatin, I start remaining groggy upon waking, so only a couple times a week. The advantage of the second though is it is easy and cheap. As always, YMMV

I have a question...I'm new to KETO for the last month. I am learning a lot and loosing weight. Can you use local RAW Honey and stay in ketosis?

    • @ama-tu-an-ki
      @ama-tu-an-ki 5 ปีที่แล้ว

This is somewhat individually dependent, but on the average, no. If you eat one teaspoon, perhaps you can still stay in ketosis (assuming NO carbs, sugar from other sources). But even just one tablespoonful will kick some people (not all) out from ketosis. BTW, do cyclical ketosis: carb back load in the evening (moderately).

i love bullet proof coffee..The fat (butter and MTC oil) together with the caffeine from the coffee gives you a boost of energy to start your day.

Careful with the alpha lipid acid. Thomas is correct, but A LA is also a potent chelator of heavy metals that can increase strain on the liver because it has to then detox these metals from the blood stream. If it can't keep up with the detox, then these metals can get redeposited in the organs which can be worse than where you started.
