I like sport coats very much and have a dozen of it. I made an experiment with one of my tweed sport coats to figure out how warm it will keep me. I walked to the nearest grocery store during a winter day with 34 degrees Fahrenheit. I wore an undershirt and a dress shirt underneath the jacket. I walk with purpose and have a fast pace. I arrived after 10 minutes and felt fine. One the way back, I started to sweat and had to reduce my walking speed and unbotton the jacket. Tweed is designed to keep you warm and it does the job very well.
I work in retail, and every time someone buys a suit for a given occasion, I always remind them to take those tags and stitching off. Even if they know, it's still good to remind them. I saw a mistake when visiting a local university, where a guy was really well-dressed, and he had forgotten to take the stitches out from the vent of the jacket. I really wanted to say something to him, but I couldn't bring myself to. I've become very knowledgeable with this kind of thing, so it's easy to notice.
Generally speaking, but not always - it'll depend on the jacket's cut, cloth, and what you're wearing with it. Plus, you may simply want to provide a more relaxed feel to your ensemble 😉

I work in a suit store: my pet peeve about sport coats is making your sport coat too tight. The trend is for slimmer cuts across the board, but nowhere in this video did you see a giant crease across the stomach from tailoring it too much.
Yeah, a lot of guys don't consider that a sport coat is intended to allow for a layering garment to be worn underneath, such as a sweater, cardigan or vest.
Well i own one Sport Coat (thick houndstooth Tweed) atm, and i wear it for the stable, means using it as for what it was designed for. In this case horse riding, after all, the art of riding is a very gentleman like sport. I usual combine it with a tie in a seasonal muted color and a poket square. Shirts are barrel cuff, Kent collar and in a light blue or gray, so that one cannot see the horsehair and dust too easy. Sometimes with a small lapel pin, and that's it. Of course combined with proper riding trousers and boots. But right know it's to warm here in centra Europe for the thick Tweed (36C/ 96.8F). ATM i wear my gray striped seersucker unstructured, non lined jacket for the stable. But as soon as the temps will drop, it will be time for the Tweed. For daily wear i prefer my blue/brown mikro-check and navy double-breasted jackets.
I don't have any complete 'suits.' I do have a half dozen sport jackets/odd jackets and slacks to mix-n-match. Then again, I do teach at university. Let's see how I do on this.
Re: the point about pinstripes at 2:52 - I have seen Brian Sacawa from HeSpokeStyle wearing, of all things, a grey flannel chalk stripe jacket from a suit with dark denim, a roll neck (turtleneck) & dress boots. He's one of the few I've seen pull this off & I think it's because the stripes are wider set and there was a lot of texture. It sounds weird, I know, as the suit has very 1930s-40s associations but it might work better than a smooth worsted wool fine pinstripe
Interesting point, however, the exception does not make the rule. It's best to understand all the rules, practice them and then decide which ones to break on an individual basis taking context such as outfit synthesis into the equation.
@@chief6541very well said. I will on occasion wear a chalk striped jacket. I know it's incorrect, but I do love stripes, so I decide (on rare occasion) to break the rule. The funny thing is, even when breaking this rule, I'm still better dressed than 99% of the men I encounter.
Brian does put together some, um, interesting outfits that I wouldn't wear myself, mainly because I don't own the items in this one outfit, but also just because I wouldn't bother trying that hard. This was in an Instagram post from June of 2022 where he matched a double breasted navy jacket (that looked like it was part of a suit, or at least an odd jacket) with white jeans, striped dress shirt and brown suede loafers.

He likes to mix and match for videos quite often, so his patch pocket navy hopsack jacket also comes with navy hopsack trousers (not the most durable material for trousers, from personal experience). He doesn't just have beige or khaki cotton chinos, he has an entire beige cotton suit, an entire light grey winter flannel suit etc
When I first watched this video, I thought it was ridiculous to admonish people to take off the label and basting stitches. No one would that, I thought. Until this past week. Periodically I venture into Washington DC. This past week, while I was in the city to visit my tailor, I stopped for lunch at a nearby deli. While eating, I noticed a young man, dressed in a rather nice business suit. The gentleman was clearly from one of the myriad of consulting firms or lobbying firms that maintain offices nearby. What caught my attention was that he had taken off his suit jacket and draped it over the back of the chair next to him. The label was still on the sleeve and the basting stitches were still keeping the vents of his jacket closed. I have never, ever, seen anyone do that before, much less someone who clearly needs to wear a suit on a regular basis. But there you have it.
Great video as always. Ok I know this one is about Sport Coats. But I have a question about Tuxedos. I'm going to a wedding and have a very nice black Jacquard jacket with Velvet shawl lapel. The trousers are plain black, and I'm wondering if I should wear them or wear some black trousers that have a Galon, which I like better. But what is proper in this situation. Thank you.

In the beginning my sartorial journey I practiced wearing ties first daily to make me used to wearing something on my neck. Now scarves are my trusty neckwears because they are very versatile. I have silk scarves for warm weather and wool and cashmere for cold. They look more casual but refined. I can tie them to look more like casual ascot or formal cravat. But in professional ocassion ties are the best.
Is light Blue Oxford styled sport blazer a solid allrounder? Jeans, khakis/ shorts, dress shoes, sneakers, polos, button downs, etc? What other options would you suggest?

I’m of the opinion that sport coats in rougher fabrics are perfectly appropriate to wear with cargo pants. If it’s acceptable to wear sport shirts like polos with them, cargo pants make sense. Maybe not the more maximalistic cargo pants like the ones shown in the video, though.

I own one bespoke full canvas, wool cashmere, sports jacket for the three seasons. And another, linen, off the rack for the summer. So there you go, problem solved.

Most people will notice most of these issues, you're just trying to flatter your viewers by calling them experts and pretending this is some advanced guide.
Technically there aren't any dress loafers, [and I really don't like loafers, anyway] but it would also depend upon the texture of the tweed jacket or possibly even the color.
I meant the color of the jacket, but if you mean by "dress" = BLACK, then the shoes will likely look wrong automatically with tan or other typically tweedy colors, but might look fine with blue tweed instead of brown shoes.
I'm afraid I don't like seeing a sport coat without a tie. It's too sprezzatura for me. Please, guys, I beg you: put on a tie. You look nice in a tie. 👍🏻😊

I wouldn’t be caught dead in a sport coat. I’m either going to wear a suit, or a waistcoat and tie, or no coat and tie at all. A nice dress shirt, or even a more casual dress shirt and khakis with boat shoes is my typical casual dress, with jeans and an Oxford shirt being rarely worn. Polio shirts and blazer/sport coats are things that will never be in my wardrobe.
Each to their own but in my view you're missing out on a big part of your wardrobe. I've only started wearing them as I've got older but wish I'd have started sooner.

Steve McQueen in BULLITT---that turtleneck/sportscoat look is just killer. I've used that look, off and on, for years.
Dirty Harry is also my favorite, Clint Eastwood, perfect example of how verstile a sport coat can be....

I always prefer a more pronounced collar than a henley or T-Shirt with a sports coat. Oxford button down is ideal if you are going without a tie.

Mistake # 1: With Jeans...
Mistake # 2: Calling them COAT.
Mistake # 3: Calling them BLAZERS.
Some pinstripe separates will work better than others. Seersucker may be more forgiving for a vintage look, for example.
Some tweeds look more refined than others, also.
