Erin you just made my morning! Last year was my first attempt at growing a dahlia. This year it was blooming like crazy...well until yesterday and our property was flooded by the remnants of this hurricane. Losing stuff is one thing, insurance will replace all of that. Losing my gorgeous flowers and vegetables is heart wrenching. The hours of being in my flower beds can never be made up.😢🥺 So here I sit at my sister’s house with my morning coffee and I see your smiling face and beautiful bouquet and I had to smile. What you do matters sweet lady, it really does. I’m just gonna live vicariously through you and your garden for a while. Thank you sooooo much for your channel!💐

I put two small yellow dahlias in with two small hosta plants in my small container and I just love them! Maybe some day I’ll buy a home just to have a dahlia garden like Erin! Thank you so much for all your inspiration 🌸💚🌞🐝🦋

Two sources for dahlias whose tubers are accurate to color, size, type--everything as described in their catalogs are Swan Island Dahlias and Dan's Dahlias. I have ordered from both for a long time with no disappointments. Plus, their selections are mouth watering and prices are fair. Another good source is Brent and Becky's Bulbs. I bought from them for the first time this year and their tubers are delivering nicely. Do forget buying from box stores and the like. Satisfy dma dahlia obsession through experienced growers. You won't be sorry. (And no, I am not a shill.)

    • @TheImpatientGardener
      @TheImpatientGardener  3 ปีที่แล้ว

They absolutely target some varieties over others. I haven't figured out yet if they prefer a particular color or if they target plants that are a bit more stressed than others like many insects do.

Love, love, love the dahlias and beautiful bouquet! Total newbie here in Virginia. Zone 6B. After I stopped picking the Japanese beetles off my roses daily, Ugh!, then I planted my first dahlia tubers in late July. Trying the same type of dahlias in a morning sun flower bed and some in an afternoon sun bed as an experiment. So far, they're only 3" high, but I'm hopeful for blooms in a few weeks. Clay soil here, so I'm trying to figure out watering in high heat(90s-100s last week) and now cooler weather(70s-80s this week 8/17). Thank you for sharing your garden and for your wonderful videos!!

What over seen so far is gorgeous! I had rain almost everyday for 2 weeks & about 50% of them rotted 😥. But at least this was my 1st year with Dahlias, h most of them were from Floret seeds & therefore less of an investment.

They stayed in the ground and they all come back but I can’t remember if I pinched or not. I grew pom pom dahlias for the first time and they’re rather small too. I have cows behind my bed and i was determined that they would not reach over the fence and eat my blooms. I have 2 more blooms coming but thought
i would have more blooms .

Well Erin and Laura from Garden Answer have been my inspiration to grow dahlias- zone 5a SE WI! Last year was my first year and I did it in a very minimal way but is was enough to start the “obsession”! Instead of Walmart dahlias (which I bought last year) I ordered from Longfield Gardens for this year but was disappointed when my Thomas Edison was actually a completely different dahlia but I did get one correct tuber and it is gorgeous! This year the bug damage is considerably more so the Japanese beetles and the aphids are rampant! Dahlias are really the most gorgeous flower you can grow- thank you Erin and Laura for expanding my flower garden!💜💗💞

I'm not as fussy about whether or not I got exactly the variety that I thought I was getting I just wanted flowers to cut and bring into the house. it's fun to watch videos by professional dahlia breeders who exhibit their blooms in flower shows. They're quite brutal with their standards and what they expect. For example, they hate "clockfacing" on dahlias - where the flower is held vertically on the plant - like a clock on the wall. it's a very serious business and fascinating to learn about !

Love your dahlias and the arrangement you made.
I grew my first this year from tubers - 2 kind - will plant more next year and maybe even try from seed.
    Nice vid.

Where do you get your dahlias from? Big fan of the apricot colors! I’m looking for more variety to add to my garden next year.

Beautiful love your dahlias, I tried to grow one in a pot last year. I grew but no flower 😩 Happy to see you have great success. Thanks for sharing 👍❤️😊

When do you fertilize your dahlias? What do you usually use. This is the first year I've grown some and plants are so small. They do have flowers but they are small too. How often do you water yours? I'm in zone 5 too.

I didn’t plant any dahlias this year, but I do miss them. Here in the desert they require tons of water or shade.

Thank you for your dahlia videos. I never thought about growing dahlias before, but I'm loving them in my garden this year. And the sweet sleepy bee bum, how adorable! I need that Crichton Honey dahlia, gorgeous!

Hey Erin.. so glad Laura pointed you out to me! Have to admit I am not into Dahlias… or anything for that matter that I need to dig up in the fall… but then again.. I am new to the garden in my new house..maybe later.. that will be a thing! But back to the point, I am so glad to find a fellow gardener in my zone, especially one that is so fun and entertaining as you! Keep up the good work!! I look forward to every new video you put out!

Absolutely gorgeous! I agree all flowers go together. I have one ,my first dahlia in a pot this year and it is just beginning to form buds. A late bloomer I guess. Anyway I will save the tubers and try it again next year and see what happens. “See what happens” seems to be always in the garden plan and it keeps things very interesting.

Thank you for the simple explanation of how to cut for stem length. I have lots of side buds on my dahlias and I’ve not been sure what to do about them ❤️

So helpful seeing them on video side by side! I would love to see a video of all of them side by side (that are are blooming at the same time at least).

I tried to grow dahlia's and it's been a fail. They almost look like they have chlorosis, something likes to nip the flowers, and now they've just stopped blooming. Oh well...you can't always hit it out of the park right?
Erin how about a video on how to fight the Japanese Beetles?

Thank you Erin, I've been looking forward to seeing your dahlias! Question: my ball dahlias (Wizard of Oz & Crichton Honey) aren't opening up all the way. They look more like a semi-circle. Any thoughts? Do I need to fertilize them?

I'm becoming more and more a fan of the pom dahlias! I love the Wizard of Oz, and may have to order that one this year.

Beautiful flowers Erin! I’m not dealing with Japanese beetles but their cousins the Asian Garden beetle and Oriental beetle. Just as destructive.

It doesn't really seem to be an issue. It's certainly warm but I think that's why the plants are doing well.
