- For the less informed that travel around the world the Philippines can be a nightmare waiting to happen ...the only guaranteed way of dealing with those issues is lots of cash on hand....
I truly feel sympathy for those who have chronic conditions and serious illness
there. ❤
I feel sorry for the poor suckers in America that are under the corrupt doctors in big Pharma establishments that are butchering people for dollars killing them with medication the government they all got their hands under the table if you want to be healthy go organic stop eating s*** food highly processed foods I noticed in the Philippines everything comes in a small wrapper and a package it's all about colors to entice the people all looks very unhealthy soda pops everything is packaged in small package and so much junk food😮 have you ever noticed the hot dogs in the Philippines are absolutely red and I assume it's artificial colorants which are very unhealthy
If they left their home country with those illnesses then they should of planned accordingly in my opinion. Everyone thinks differently and have different situations I guess.
Thousands of Americans die annually due to lack of health insurance.
@@ViceCoin are you speaking of in the Philippines or everywhere. If everywhere that would go for every country not just Americans.
Things in the Philippines are generally sold in small amounts so they can afford to buy, healthy or not, but most buy their food from markets fresh
I can attest to this video’s wisdom. I am an active and healthy guy that happened to injure my shoulder. Ive had to go to two hospitals, taken MRI and visit multiple doctors and still do not have a handle on what the problem is. I am going to find another doc this week to get an additional opinion. Yes, all the services are cheap, but i want a reasonable level of competence and care as well. There are endless stories of expats dying at the hands of poor care. DO NOT come here if you are not healthy. I am starting to consider if i want to remain in the Philippines for this reason alone.
After several years, we retreated to Guam (U.S. Medicare)
Keep moving your hurt shoulder if you can...you don't want to get "frozen shoulder"...look up simple shoulder physical therapy exercises online
Excellent advice because everything is great until it’s not!! This is a subject many don’t want to think about but if we are going to live in a country like the Philippines getting sick is not if it’s when! When we do these cost of living budgets healthcare should be at the very top of the list before entertainment before travel and as important as the food we eat!
Absolutely!!♥️
Yes, in a lot of these budget type videos they go into rent, utility bills, food, transport etc. but no mention of health care costs.
Without your health nothing else matters!

Not only in the Philippines anywhere in the underdeveloped countries once you leave North America Western Europe Australia and New Zealand once you leave these areas you are taking a huge gamble with your health and life.
As an expat in the Philippines I have fluid in my left knee, needs to be aspirated, went to 3 different Orthopedic doctors in Dumaguete, each doctor will not aspirate my knee, they lie to me about they're busy or doing surgery, I waited hours at the hospital, all the orthopedic docotr did was look at the knee and said " I don't have the correct size needle" this is pure B.S. it's Sept 2024, I'll have to go back to the USA to seek medical treatment, 1 thing for sure I'm not coming back to the Philippines.
I wouldn't get to comfortable with that thinking... it is estimated that over 1/3 of in hospital deaths in the USA are caused by medical error.
Go to Thailand for better health care.
Not if you have money or health insurance cos we have very good hospitals and doctors here.
@@eddieBoxer Exactly that’s what I mean taking your health into the Twilight Zone it’s the same in Thailand or anywhere in that area don’t believe people that say any of these countries have world class healthcare it’s bull crap 💩 it’s not about the know how it’s about caring they just don’t care they are too nonchalant too lackadaisical no sense of urgency as if human life has very little value even in hospitals partly because there is no litigation you can’t sue anybody that’s why we complain in the USA about litigation but it creates accountability when people are afraid to be sued
Christ mate, good advice!!
I’m an expat from the UK, moved to Canada in 2000.
Had a couple of run ins with the big C, now in remission and fit as can be at 55, but with the cost of living increasing in Canada been looking at a life over there or Cambodia etc.
Your info makes me think twice.
We don’t realize how important healthcare coverage is until we get older.
Many of course slip over this as an issue, choosing to ignore the realities can cost us dearly 🤔🤗♥️
Do stay in Canada - we believed the “cost is lower”, “great retirement” and moved to Mexico 2 years ago, and soon moving back to USA (we are from chicago). It’s all a lie and you get scammed left and right - they see USA and Canadians as $$$$… also health wise, I came down with a neurological condition and even though I’m in a large city there is no neurologist to diagnose or treat it, they don’t have the advanced lumbar spine tests they would do up north etc. so I cannot get the diagnostic I need, nor the treatment that would follow. I paid out of pocket even though we have expat insurance for $250 usd a month for mri, blood tests, neuro that don’t even listen to me (way worse than in USA!). All the TH-camrs that tell u it’s paradise have the need for clicks to get more money on TH-cam, or they sell you other things… hope sells big time!
What you need to do is find a smaller city in Canada, hopefully close to where you live and move there. If you can, stay in same state. That’s what we are doing and we hear from many expats that return back that they did the same - you go to a smaller town (if you can find a university town - it’s cheaper and they have lots of amenities and almost free entertainment, talks, concerts, sports etc).
I’ll never ever return to Mexico - not even in vacation, had the fill of it… the only exception is if I’m totally incapacitated, told my husband to put me in a nursing home here in Mx cause usa is 10k usd and up a month - can’t afford it. Good luck!
That is life, that’s why you need emergency money and credit card, nothing is free, even water is being paid!!! Let’s get real!! Anywhere you go in the world, assimilate, don’t complain, maybe, Philippines is not for everybody
Top advice.. doctor s are the business people..full stop
True, private hospitals can cost a few grand but they are STILL DIRT CHEAP compare to the hospital back home. If you go to a PUBLIC hospital get your will written and affairs in order.
not if u have insurance in the usa,,,,i pay almost nothing when i go to hospital in usa,,,,But lucky for me , i am covered if i go overseas. But, i have to pay first in the PI, then get my money back from hospital in usa.
I remember back in the early 1980’s my wife was having an operation in Indonesia and required 2 bags of blood. I had to take a taxi to the blood bank shop and buy the blood. Then take a taxi back carrying the blood.
Well God bless you.
Another thing that is sad is that there's a lot of expats living over there now that would have easily been able to pay for their medical procedures if they didn't freely give their money away to their young, no money making filipina, her kids and the filipina's family. You work your whole life for retirement and then use that money in retirement to take care of another girl, that girl's family and all of their possible medical issues. You have to look out for yourself!
In a perfect world , hindsight is a wonderful asset but unfortunately stupidity gets in its way 🤔🤗❤️

What is the best type of medical insurance for a foreigner looking to retire in the Philippines@@abritishexpatinthephilippines
My wife had Cataract surgery in Batangas. Excellent eye surgeon and well staffed, clean hospital. Cost us $1100.00. It would have been almost double in Manila.
i was quoted £8000 a year for me and the misses im 68 she 58 no underlining health issues , ill put money by for a rainy day
@@rammay9383 Most Americans live paycheck to paycheck, with no savings, and thousands in debt from homes, cars, annd credit cards.
Sobering. A real wake up call. I’ve talked to older people abroad travelling long term with no insurance. Good luck to them. Not worth the risk.
I keep telling all my old codger mates that keep hollering about a great life in the PI,thailand or Vietnam,if you long term sick stay at home.
What a great and lovely guy.
What puzzles me is that they don't make medical insurance a condition on visa applications. I live in Croatia and such a condition does apply to my residency status here. I pay about €100 a month which is a substantial chunk of my income but GP visits, hospital stays etc. are free. I had wondered what would happen if I went back to UK. I wonder if the illegal immigrants in UK are also liable for big medical bills?
I imagine that they of course are exempt, where as returning nationals pay and wait a period until entitlements continue...that's why so many are simply giving up and coming for the sun and pretty ladies...dying with a smile on their face 😂😃🤔😔
Just pays to do worst case scenario speculation before jumping into the expat life.😮
NO! the illegal immigrants in UK are covered for medical from the tax paying public purse, along with housing, clothing & food allowance!
@@abritishexpatinthephilippines The NHS is free for emergency and urgent care, you can even register with a GP for free. Dentists opthamologists are at a cost we all have to pay, check out the website, you are entitled upon arrival, no waiting period involved.

I wear flip-flops also, and I am always tripping over something with them.
Yes unfortunately it's not about age, but flip flops say what they are....dangerous footware
I am 68 years old, wearing those things are dangerous, I trip over something and lose my balance and almost fall on my head. The older you get you lose your balance so much easier.
@patd4u2 I'm 76😂still do silly things like climbing ladders🤔
Try sandals with velcro straps , much better and more comfortable imho .
I always wear tennis shoes in the Philippines. I don't feel comfortable or safe in chanclas
If you eat healthy vegetables and meat like chicken fish your health would at least be cleaner and not a destruction to your health. Eating rice a day later from cook can remove the effects of starch and be more healthier. Stay away from fried foods unless cooked in coconut or avocado oil. You can stay healthy lose weight and help yourself. Do not drink or very little drinking and no smoking.

What a fucking boring Life!😮
Medical is atrocious in php.
The secret to life is don't get old.
Dont get sick.
In the USA or UK that femur fx would have been taken care of by competent surgeons. He would have been walking a few short days after a titanium rod was inserted in his leg
Yes I agree, but to have left it surely is risking infection and possible amputation 🤔
Good video Po ..
It's unfortunate that many men are being led to believe by unscrupulous vloggers how cheap it is to retire in places like the Philippines only to discover the hidden costs, like medical expenses, can very easily bankrupt you overnight. Live cheap and chase the 20 year old girls - live out your fantasy - until you get sick or hurt - and most never prepare for the unexpected.
I am 64 in great health and got great health coverage for 1600.00 USD annual ! Guys be prepared for issues that will arise ! If you don’t have savings I don’t recommend living here or moving anywhere outside your country ! I think you can find good healthcare here to
Some degree but if you live in the provinces it’s not a good options !
Wait until you develop an illness
Thailand and Malaysia in Asia and Mexico if you get temporary or permanent residency as then you can get into the IMSS system, cheap and good. Thailand and Malaysia recognize travel insurance and have good hospitals, plus their infrastructure is far superior to the Philippines. Costs are similar. Also if you spend 6 months in Thailand and/or Malaysia you will still have full Medicare in Australia as you will be seen as a tourist spending time in Thailand /Malaysia.
Best way to avoid motorcycle accidents-never buy one. Avoid bus accidents by not riding on one. Buy a car for safety.
And then you csn have a car accident... To avoid issues, just not be born (your logic)
I'm quite surprised about a British citizen, over say 60, who has paid into the NHS all of his working life, not being able to return to the UK for treatment?
Massive number of immigrants here, including illegal immigrants, get access to the NHS. In preference to local Brits is seems.
That unfortunately is the liberal feelings of those on power around the world, citizens have no value anymore they just line their pockets appeasing those that jump the que
@@abritishexpatinthephilippines Yes, unfortunately, the governments certainly don't work on behalf of their citizens. I think it's worse in Western, rather than Eastern Europe. I have a place in Bulgaria to escape from the Western mentality. Who know how long that will last though. Plus it's cold in the winter! The Philippines seems appealing, at least for part of the year.
I agree with you. My mom was neglected in the hospital in cebu City. She lost her leg because the blood clot farther up . I had to move her to a private hospital. She survived after the operation. It extended her life for 5 years until she finally passed.
My condolences 😔
Excellent presentation. Liked, subscribed, and rang that bell.

I think most old folks lose in old age because of healthcare. Just too much money for most
Had the money first experience you describe in 2017. The problem is that you do not get the treatment you pay for and are deliberately mis-diagnosed just to increase the bill.
Private hospital in the country is very expensive. You may spend hundred of thousand or million if you are operated or admitted in the ICU. You should go to a tertiary govt.hospital if you need hospitalization. Avail yourself Philhealth insurance coverage.
in case of medical emergency, the traffic would kill you - you'd die stuck between jeepneys and tricycles!!! that is, if there is any decent clinic/hospital near your area.
Oh negative, but yes traffic can be horrendous even in an ambulance
Your Dr. May be in the traffic jam . . in a trike . .or jeepney !
So True! I had a good friend who died unexpectedly because of the lack of emergency services and transport.
I kept telling you guys that you'll be in trouble with a catastrophic medical situation.
I lost a good friend in Calbayog City because of the lack of emergency medical services, and he had the means to pay for it!
@TropicShade Doesn't matter that you have money if you situate yourself far away from needed services, especially for someone in advance age. You got to use common sense. It's no different in the US as medical facilities are scarce in rural America.
@@rspcoach619 Catastrophic (or dead)! I was in agreement with you!
@TropicShade I knew that you understood the situation. The Philippines' equivalent of rural are the provinces. What makes it worse, they're in separate islands.
If you want good medical care go to Malaysia or Thailand.
Accurate summery of the pitfalls of the medical system in the Philippines. I am 65 & think twice about visiting the Philippines with my Pinoy wife.

Catastrophic Medical insurance is available in the Philippines at reasonable prices. Around $150 USD/Month with a high deductible of around $5000 USD.
Depends on your age 70 and above, good luck
This inexpensive life comes with a few obstacles. First is the Filipino diet that's high in sugar and starch, then the humidity and insects that thrive in the environment, our lifestyle of alcohol. There is a long list, but you know it all already. Then getting the correct diagnosis for whatever illness we contract. Not having a regular exercise and physical activity. Motorcycle accidents or falls. All obstacles faced to live in paradise. 🤨🫣
Which leads to the question: Is it really paradise? 🤨
and P40,000 a month means you need to live in the province as well, where finding or getting to a hospital might have
it's challenges so yeah..kinda tricky ?
Getting timely and proper health care in the Philippines is like going to a casino. How lucky are you at rolling the dice? Can you afford to gamble?
You are telling the truth. Those who only think about sinking their torpedo in a Filipina ship, need to come prepared with money as a reserve. That reserve in my opinion the emergency fund needs to be $100,000 (USD) if you don’t have it don’t come here.
Yes P40,000 a month isn't much if you have serious medical issues and rent to pay, along with a wife & her 2 kids ??
I watched that vid also & felt bad for the guy, nice to see him with a sense of humour about things tho ! Hope he gets the help

I completely i agree with what you have said.
Amigo, I am visiting East Africa now, if you haven't please watch the " Campbell family " last video on how she's taking care of her husband 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏. I care about all seniors retired all over the world. That's what we need

this video is all about medical issues and financial issues that will happen even in other countries. What is best is retire in your own country. At least your own people , your own rules and same way of thinking. Philippines is not for you to retire.
What about dentistry?
So having said all that I’ve got a question for you a fit 55 year old British guy with a regular pension of 90k pesos coming in every month with some savings in the bank £40k and some more money coming a little later and obviously the full uk state pension coming at 67 would you say that’s enough to make a go of it in the Philippines?
Certainly think so but always consider it's your last, hold on tight to your wallet, and remember that special word 'NO' sorry no budget😭😃🤔♥️
Haha I’ve had plenty of experience with Filipinas and I agree we all need to know when and how to say “no” I’m going down the SRRV route I know it’s an initial outlay but the visa is connected to me not a marriage or a pinay🤣 I’ve actually found an insurance company that “ direct pays” hospitals in the Philippines but will believe that when I see it!! Best to have access to a few thousand pounds at all times! My routes are welsh so we know all about hard times and looking after our money 🤣🤣
Philippines has the worst medical care in Asia, better you go to Thailand.
Being healthy at 55yo is one thing, but we can all be assured of that claim NOT being a long-term trend.
@@TropicShadeyes I’d have to agree
Everybody acts like we all will live forever ? -- I'm 74 and lived my life mostly. In the US inflation is unbelievable for seniors on low incomes and who are unable to work or earn more money ! Since death is inevitable anyway perhaps taking your chances is not such a bad way to go (?) and just hope for the best ? If care is more than you can afford and life unbearable - suicide is an option many have chose ? I recently learned it is the #1 cause of death for expats in Cambodia - where many US expats live on small $800 - $900 / mo. SS checks. -?- Appears perhaps OD's on sleeping pills or something at work here ? Locals in the Philippines w/o much money surely aren't allowed to suffer and at least are treated with pain relief meds before or until they die ? 🤔 Some dignity not to suffer ?
Sad to tell, you but the proposed operation on that man’s femur is way beyond the abilities of Filipino doctors Yes, they will attempt it but the outcome is not likely to be good.
Risks of infection are high also.
That's what I thought too
@@abritishexpatinthephilippines The operation involves bone grafting to make up the 4 inches lost and internal fixation with plates and screws. Any infection would be disastrous and he would be left with chronic osteomyelitis as well as a failed graft.

I doubt he'll raise the necessary funds and because he's been away from UK for such time he will probably have to sign a debt invoice to the NHS
Yes, I left the UK for Canada in 2000. In 2019 I needed to get a stem cell transplant for the big C and because of the after care and support I wanted to get this done in the UK
I contacted Christie’s in Manchester who said yes we can do the treatment but Alberta heathcare would have to pick up the tab or me myself. Of course Alberta said no way.

You left your country because you also have problems with your own country. I feel sad as a filipino to hear too many complains from foreigners who migrates and sees only the bad sides of my country. YOu have complain don't put video here that a lot of foreigners will see and think all hospitals in philippines are bad. Have you experienced all the hospital in philippines? Did they treat you all bad? Did you spent too much ? Maybe you went to a hospital that is cheap hospital that you are capable to pay. So why are you still in PHilippines? Maybe philippines is not a country for you to stay. Go to another asian country, more cheaper country and maybe you will meet your needs.
Quinton that's really great to have your Filipino input....I think those that complain about the hospitals here in the Philippines are from countries sich as the US and especially the UK and Australia, where medical treatment is free to all citizens, and theyve grown up expecting that the whole world is the same. As you know there are many good regional govt teaching hospitals that provide excellent service, the problems that many expats encounter is they thought it would be cheap and discover it's not if you need major surgery...plus you will have to pay the whole account before you leave the hospital, most expats are not that wealthy and therefore many feel that they might not come and retire here as the health issues they bring with them might not be addressed properly, due to the fact that many Philippines hospital lack the budget for modern equipment and medicines....don't be so hard on them as they too need to be careful about their health plans just as Filipino and their Filipina family need to remind themselves too
If you don't have the funds. Stay in your country. Simple. I don't feel sorry for people in their 50s or older and don't have credit cards or good credit. No discipline has consequences.
