Always great to see Stephen and Hilary Draper (with Sid) at the Goth Festivals and the wonderful creations they bring, as well as themselves of course too. A great walk about and nice to see you also got to talk to some of the same people as me too. Never knew about the free Whitby parking over winter and as regards the Abbey steps, I am sure there are at least 300! Cheers Alan
It was great to see the Drapers with Sid and I even got a cuddle (with Sid) the creativity & talent that goes into the costumes is off the scale! It’s one of our favourite weekends of the year - the atmosphere is great and the people so friendly We just found out that on every 10th step up to the Abbey there is a little plaque with how many steps you have gone up. I have never noticed that - it probably because I’m trying to breathe and not look like I’m about to keel over 😂😂 I’m sure our paths will cross again soon x Rachel & David

Sorry but these are not Goths or embracing who they want to be - they won't do this in thier own town outside Whitby, so they aren't embracing anything. They go to Whitby because they won't stand out. You think they would do this in Sheffield? Goths would because that's who they are but this is not Goths but people in costume. Please don't associate Goths with this, it's insulting.
@benfletcher9659 thanks Ben. Fair point, however, you'll notice that I didn't describe anyone as 'Goth'. If all participants are enjoying the moment, regardless of whether they're in costume or not, I think that's brilliant. No harm is done. Additionally, Whitby gets a much needed autumn boost in tourism which supports many small independent shops and businesses out of the usual holiday season. Hope you love Whitby too!
I live in Guisborough and visit Whitby regularly. If you look at the steps you will see a little metal tag that tells you the number every 10 steps. Nice video and lovely people.

Thanks Tim, we should have been dressed up this year but things didn’t quite go to plan on the run up. It’s a very popular event and I believe this one and the April contribute about £1.1m to the local economy which is great. You’re right regarding fish and chips - you just have to! Ohhh Tim we have outfits but time last week was an issue. I was working so only went on Sat - life sometimes gets in the way and you know how shy I am - I’m a bit nervous of getting dressed up! Rachel

Hi David and Rachel that was certainly a multi coloured weekend. It's been a few years now since we've seen a goth weekend the last on we seen was at York about 4 years ago. There's always a queue at the magpie chippy I wouldn't like to stand in the queue to be told at the door Sorry but we are closing😂 I can't handle crowds like that anymore due to my disability i get frustrated walking around Workington😅 Till the next video Tek care and stay safe from Malcolm and Sheila.
Hi Malcolm and Sheila, hope you’re both good. Yes it was very much a multi-coloured weekend with some fantastic costumes. it does get really busy, especially on Saturday afternoon. Imagine it would be particularly tricky. For fish and chips - I can imagine some folks in the queue until it’s closing, especially if people are hanging around inside. If we spot the Magpie quiet when we’re in Whitby, we sometimes give it a go. Anyway, we managed to sit down with some Fish and Chips! All the very best, David & Rachel ❤️👍

We had a guest house on west cliff 2003-6, twice a year was quite a sight, brought back some memories. We had goths staying who’d been coming since year one. Not sure what happened to the Victoriana🤔

Not sure that this is really a gothic event anymore. Looks a great costume event with great people but more costume and steampunk than "goth". I'd be interested to know what music, which is the core of "gothic" is available over the weekend.
Morning, I think the event has probably ‘diversified’ from the origins, however the majority of the outfits are epic, the people fantastic and the atmosphere great so it gets my vote! Hello Rachel and David and Roxy. Hope you are well. We went to Whitby in May, lovely place. Just been touring in our ex Sainsbury van conversion up to Mablethorpe then wells next the sea for a week. Your video was excellent. Love the camera still shots and fantastic music . Do you plan on coming down to Norfolk at all next year? . What do you think to power banks, and I've just bought a 2.4w solar trickle charger plugged into obd port keeps battery topped if you don't use van much . Hi David & Beverley, hope you're good. It's a lovely place isn't it. Sounds like a great break in Mablethorpe and Wells. We're going to start planning for next year soon - so may do but not sure as yet. My experience with power banks has been the AllPowers R2500 and I've found that really useful, in the van as you know I fitted a dedicated system but what I do find handy with the power bank is I can use it for DIY and other jobs with it being able to be moved around. Not sure if that helps, all the best, David (& Rachel) 👍

They also listen to goth music, which is similar to punk rock and has dark and morbid lyrics, because they are Goths. So what are these other people doing here, at Whitby, at a goth weekend?
Really interesting background, thank you for sharing. I think the weekend grew in popularity, with a wider range of people and cultures, also with the weekend being Halloween, folks dress up for that too.
@@LeisureBit I guess if it really mattered, the Goth version of a union, would be outraged and call for a Token Whitby Halloween night,so as not detract from their important historic gatherings..................

They do not like the fact that these people are not only making a mockery of their culture, reducing it to a silly costume and not being able to get a hotel space to visit their music event
Admittedly, there are a few very well-done and very well-thought-out outfits, where there's obviously been a lot of hard work put in… but there’s also a hell of a lot of tacky trash and off-the-peg supermarket Halloween fancy dress. Is there still plenty of loud good ole rock n roll Goth bands playing every night over the weekend or do they just walk around posing and taking photos?
The majority are incredibly well designed and well made outfits created with flair and passion and with a great attention to detail. We went back to the van early this time but last year the music was pumping for sure! Rachel & David

I brush them for hours a day - not true 😂😂😂 I had a bridge which fell out after covid taking the tooth it was tethered to so I was left with a gap which I hated. I tried desperately to get 2 implants in the UK but after numerous visits and a quote of £15k I gave up and did the unthinkable and went to Turkey and had implants plus cosmetic work for a fraction of the cost plus 2 weeks holiday Rachel (& her sparkly teeth that she doesn’t regret) 💗💗
@LeisureBit We were parked up the street by the harbour wall & my daughter & i were gping for a long walk to The Magpie or a fish shop . And laura being Laura got talking to a guy walking alongside us . She asked him where he was going & he told her Hadley's as it was better than The Magpie . So we dollowed him & he was right . I'm hoping a friend Mr Mcabe has been taking photos of The Goth Weekend as his photos are always superb .

Thank you for at least covering the history of how it started most videos don't bother. I am afraid this isn't really a Goth event anymore. Most Goths have been pushed out due to either prices or anxiety on how busy the weekend is. Goths do not wear costumes and Whitby was just an extension of what we did in our own towns and cities. If someone worse a costume and went out in Leeds that would not make them anymore then a Goth doing in in Whitby. Goth is a subculture and is not about dressing up and is insulting if that's how our scene is interpreted as - which the blame probably lies at the Steampunks door.
Fish n chips in restaurants in Whitby aren’t cheap but That included drinks too and it was delicious- got to treat yourself occasionally. Rachel & David 💗

I love the Brenda and Effie mystery series by Paul Magrs. They're all set in Whitby. The twist is that Brenda, who runs a B & B, is actually the bride of Dracula and Effie, who owns a junk shop, is a witch. The books are bonkers but great fun!
The majority of the people participating put a lot of time and effort into their outfits and I for one are very grateful of their efforts. It’s a great weekend that contributes to the local economy Rachel 💗

Well the original Goth festival in Whitby was simply just a meet up of Goths that met up there simply because they liked Bram Stoker's Dracula and it grew into a music video..... But if your question was what have all those people in costumes got to do with Goth, then the answer is nothing, absolutely nothing! These Narcissistic cosplayers and Steam punks have hijacked the event

The friends we were stalking was GenX 😂😂 we had insider intel that said they would be at the Whalebones @ 1 😂😂 we hung around but missed them by minutes! 😢

Thanks Tim, we should have been dressed up this year but things didn’t quite go to plan on the run up. It’s a very popular event and I believe this one and the April contribute about £1.1m to the local economy which is great. You’re right regarding fish and chips - you just have to! Ohhh Tim we have outfits but time last week was an issue. I was working so only went on Sat - life sometimes gets in the way and you know how shy I am - I’m a bit nervous of getting dressed up!

Hi David and Rachel that was certainly a multi coloured weekend. It's been a few years now since we've seen a goth weekend the last on we seen was at York about 4 years ago. There's always a queue at the magpie chippy I wouldn't like to stand in the queue to be told at the door Sorry but we are closing😂 I can't handle crowds like that anymore due to my disability i get frustrated walking around Workington😅 Till the next video Tek care and stay safe from Malcolm and Sheila.
Hi Malcolm and Sheila, hope you’re both good. Yes it was very much a multi-coloured weekend with some fantastic costumes. it does get really busy, especially on Saturday afternoon. Imagine it would be particularly tricky. For fish and chips - I can imagine some folks in the queue until it’s closing, especially if people are hanging around inside. If we spot the Magpie quiet when we’re in Whitby, we sometimes give it a go. Anyway, we managed to sit down with some Fish and Chips! All the very best, David & Rachel ❤️👍

@@LeisureBit I was in the graveyard for about 15 minutes having my picture taken. I actually dress like this all of the time for college or whenever I'm going out.
We had a guest house on west cliff 2003-6, twice a year was quite a sight, brought back some memories. We had goths staying who’d been coming since year one. Not sure what happened to the Victoriana🤔

Not sure that this is really a gothic event anymore. Looks a great costume event with great people but more costume and steampunk than "goth". I'd be interested to know what music, which is the core of "gothic" is available over the weekend.
Morning, I think the event has probably ‘diversified’ from the origins, however the majority of the outfits are epic, the people fantastic and the atmosphere great so it gets my vote!
I think some of the traditional pubs remain true to the core and offer a goth experience

Hello Rachel and David and Roxy. Hope you are well. We went to Whitby in May, lovely place. Just been touring in our ex Sainsbury van conversion up to Mablethorpe then wells next the sea for a week. Your video was excellent. Love the camera still shots and fantastic music . Do you plan on coming down to Norfolk at all next year? . What do you think to power banks, and I've just bought a 2.4w solar trickle charger plugged into obd port keeps battery topped if you don't use van much . Hi David & Beverley, hope you're good. It's a lovely place isn't it. Sounds like a great break in Mablethorpe and Wells. We're going to start planning for next year soon - so may do but not sure as yet.
My experience with power banks has been the AllPowers R2500 and I've found that really useful, in the van as you know I fitted a dedicated system but what I do find handy with the power bank is I can use it for DIY and other jobs with it being able to be moved around. So Gothic is a contemporary subculture that originated in the 1980s among fans of the band Bauhaus. Goths are often associated with a dark aesthetic and are known for wearing black clothing, dark makeup, and unusual jewelry. They also listen to goth music, which is similar to punk rock and has dark and morbid lyrics, because they are Goths. So what are these other people doing here, at Whitby, at a goth weekend?
Really interesting background, thank you for sharing. I think the weekend grew in popularity, with a wider range of people and cultures, also with the weekend being Halloween, folks dress up for that too.
@@LeisureBit I guess if it really mattered, the Goth version of a union, would be outraged and call for a Token Whitby Halloween night,so as not detract from their important historic gatherings..................
And every year let us wish that Whitby get better and better encouraging all types of Goths to be delighted to be there.

They do not like the fact that these people are not only making a mockery of their culture, reducing it to a silly costume and not being able to get a hotel space to visit their music event
Admittedly, there are a few very well-done and very well-thought-out outfits, where there's obviously been a lot of hard work put in… but there’s also a hell of a lot of tacky trash and off-the-peg supermarket Halloween fancy dress. Is there still plenty of loud good ole rock n roll Goth bands playing every night over the weekend or do they just walk around posing and taking photos?
The majority are incredibly well designed and well made outfits created with flair and passion and with a great attention to detail.
We went back to the van early this time but last year the music was pumping for sure!

I had a bridge which fell out after covid taking the tooth it was tethered to so I was left with a gap which I hated.
I tried desperately to get 2 implants in the UK but after numerous visits and a quote of £15k I gave up and did the unthinkable and went to Turkey and had implants plus cosmetic work for a fraction of the cost plus 2 weeks holiday

@LeisureBit We were parked up the street by the harbour wall & my daughter & i were gping for a long walk to The Magpie or a fish shop . And laura being Laura got talking to a guy walking alongside us . She asked him where he was going & he told her Hadley's as it was better than The Magpie . So we dollowed him & he was right . I'm hoping a friend Mr Mcabe has been taking photos of The Goth Weekend as his photos are always superb .

Thank you for at least covering the history of how it started most videos don't bother. I am afraid this isn't really a Goth event anymore. Most Goths have been pushed out due to either prices or anxiety on how busy the weekend is. Goths do not wear costumes and Whitby was just an extension of what we did in our own towns and cities. If someone worse a costume and went out in Leeds that would not make them anymore then a Goth doing in in Whitby. Goth is a subculture and is not about dressing up and is insulting if that's how our scene is interpreted as - which the blame probably lies at the Steampunks door.

I think the event has grown substantially in size and perhaps with that it has become a bit more mainstream. But the event is amazing, people so friendly and we really enjoyed it. Plus it adds to the local economy

I love the Brenda and Effie mystery series by Paul Magrs. They're all set in Whitby. The twist is that Brenda, who runs a B & B, is actually the bride of Dracula and Effie, who owns a junk shop, is a witch. The books are bonkers but great fun!
Some of the original subcultures Goths from the late 70s early 80s, actually look like the walking dead now lol 😆 😜
Some of those Goths are a fright. And that isn't meant as a compliment.
The majority of the people participating put a lot of time and effort into their outfits and I for one are very grateful of their efforts. It’s a great weekend that contributes to the local economy

Well the original Goth festival in Whitby was simply just a meet up of Goths that met up there simply because they liked Bram Stoker's Dracula and it grew into a music video..... But if your question was what have all those people in costumes got to do with Goth, then the answer is nothing, absolutely nothing! These Narcissistic cosplayers and Steam punks have hijacked the event
