    You forgot to mention the best part of this, being able to see the transients of the DI to help you edit the amp input that’s brilliant!

      Absolutely one of the benefits to recording a DI

    I picked this up from a video you did years ago, love it! 2 things.... If you option click the 'L' in the trim plug in it opens a second window with the right side :) ..But... Even better.... I use the DownMixer plug in instead of Trim. It gives you all that same control in one window PLUS it changes the track to a mono track so you only have a single pan knob. I find this much easier to work with in the mixer than having a stereo track that only has one working pan.

      @kyleritter3074 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      same. downmixer is the one.

      @@kyleritter3074 Also... if you need to EQ or Compress one side different from the other, for example if snare top and bottom are on a stereo track, then you just use multi mono plug ins before the downmixer plugin then anything you want to do to both you can do after the plug in with a mono plug in. Keeps things so tidy!

    Chris, you can view both of the multi-mono L and R settings at the same time. In the plugin window, unlink them as you did in the video, then hold "option" and click on the "L" that's right below the link button. It will open a second plugin window with the right-side settings. I Hope this helps!

    Wow! Printing DI and amp at the same time on a stereo track!! 😮

  • @LasseLammert

    Been doing it like that for years with the Kemper+DI (or dual miked cabs etc).
    I prefer the downmixer plugin in pro tools over trim though (if you don’t have to keep it dual mono).
    With downmixer you won’t have to switch between left/right but you can just adjust volume, mute, flip polarity on the same page.
    It’ll then turn the signal into a regular mono signal (easier for panning, OCD etc :).
    That way my two mic tracks turn into a regular mono track with a blend I can adjust later.
    Or my amp+DI track stay on the same track for edits, I mute the DI side of the signal into downmixer and it’ll be real mono.
    Not sure if downmixer is ultimate only, but I can’t live without that plugin

    • @chrisbaseford
      @chrisbaseford  หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@LasseLammert yes, recently started using the downmixer once tracking is done. the one thing I prefer about the multi-mono is being able to visually monitor the levels of both sides without having the plugin open.

    Interesting! Feels like at least once per project I forget to turn on groups and wind up with one guitar part without a DI. Might have to try out this approach.

    I do this with the stock downmixer plugin instead of the gain plugin. You can then turn off the DI from one window. And the output of the track turns mono.

    Another recommendation for using Downmixer plugin for this at IMO a slight advantage. Not only do you get both L and R channels visible at the same time and in a more natural "vertical" format (unlike multi-mono Trim), any processing you do afterwards will take up half the CPU since you're working with a "mono" track now rather than stereo. Either way, a must have for Fractal style recording into PT!

    • @chrisbaseford
      @chrisbaseford  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, love this. Been playing with the down mixer for this. Mostly better, just a few functional things about the trim plugin that I like. But it’s great to have both!! Thanks for the comment. 🤘🏼🤘🏼

    Amazingly simple and efficient ! Chris: IF you talk to Avid, PLEASE ask them WHY they don't make a "type of track" with a TRIM and PHASE button BUILT-IN?? Thousands of users would love it. Just a simple trim and phase controls but built in. Love your channel! I've been trying to incorporate your "Templates" into my workflow. THANK-YOU.

    • @chrisbaseford
      @chrisbaseford  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh man, I’d love it if this was just built in. I’ll be sure to be a squeaky wheel with Avid 😜

    Just a note - interesting and helpful but may help the less patient for you to sum up first what the point is of doing this method and the benefits. So far the video has almost finished without knowing what the point of this is. This is not a criticism but it would help your message get across if you summed up what the reason for doing this is rather than the method in a DAW that many won't have.

    Does the AxeFX 3 not provide the raw DI on IN 3 over USB like the AxeFX 2 does? I fail to see what problem this technique is addressing. My typical routing is purely over USB; IN 1 and 2 routed to their own tracks provide the amp sound and IN 3 provides the DI which goes to its own track. Simply bus the amp tracks to their own track for combined processing once you're done with edits. Am I missing something that this technique fixes or ameliorates?

    • @chrisbaseford
      @chrisbaseford  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Editing, playlists, accidentally turning groups on/off, tracks & takes getting separated, etc. audio file naming, etc. If it’s never an issue for you, disregard… but the first time you experience a DI / Amp group that doesn’t line up or have matching edits, you’ll never NOT use a multi-mono track.

    This is definitely the best method with a stock plugin. Try out BOZ Pan Knob, and Panipulator to achieve this result even faster. I’ll be making a recording template/tutorial that showcases them soon.

    Great! I hate huge amounts of track counts. Dude, please avid to make it so we can label the piano roll so it can look like the one in easy drummer… also be able to compress midi velocities. So you still have a natural feel but less dynamic.
