Yamaha R3 Superbike BETA - First Test [Superbike Build Series Ep.6]

  • The BETA version of our R3 Superbike is now complete and did it's first test at the Daytona International Speedway. Overall, the bike handled great and worked well for having only a baseline setup. However, we did have to make a few adjustments to the geometry to get it just right. We made a ton of notes covering what we felt and how the bike reacted in certain situations so we can then make the necessary adjustments in the coming weeks and hopefully be ready for our next race event. So stay tuned!

    Awesome side by side action! I see you carry more corner entry speed than some of the bigger bikes. I do the same on my R3. I also noticed that your front end is really firmed up with the upgrade. I'm a budget track day guy so I suffer with the stock suspension. Not really suffer, I try to maximize what I have by loading the front straight up and letting off the front brake easy on corner entry to not see-saw the front and rear. Yes, keep those revs up 9k or above in those sweepers, the powerband really bogs under that threshold. Something I've learned to be mindful of. Other than that, you made it to the pits, man and machine in one piece, always a good day when that happens, a good day for all. Thanks for the upload. The Frankenmotor will be something to see in the near future.

    Great vid, it shows a lot of what i wanted to see. I'm surprised the stock R3 engine was able to keep up.

    • @TSTindustries
      @TSTindustries  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      At the moment I am using 110/140 Pirelli Supercorsa. Alex, the pilot of our Supersport R3 just recently tried the new Bridgestone race tires in 120/150 and reported that he liked them better. I will be testing those soon too and will probably report on that in our videos.

      dolphin's brain we had a bone stock motor without any tuning done in the bike for his event. Subscribe and stick around to see how far we will take this machine. Daytona was not the end of the build, it was just the first test. The series will document all the modifications to get this machine where it will dominate. I hope you subscribe and stick around to see this unfold.

  • @MrToolean
    @MrToolean 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Looks like you might need more gear for that large of a track.

    • @TSTindustries
      @TSTindustries  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I couldn't even wind out 6th all the way so taller gearing would not work. More power is what is needed. That was a bone stock motor in the bike because the SB motor wasn't finished before Daytona. My lines were really bad too. I had no chance to figure out the bike before the event. I typically race big bikes, and running those lines with a tiny bike is waaaay wrong. Big lessons learned, and will be applied as the season progresses.

    • @MrToolean
      @MrToolean 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +TSTindustries Oh! Sorry, I thought you were in 6th. My bad.

  • @TD402dd
    @TD402dd 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I only noticed on the tighter turns you let the rpm drop too low and you should have dropped a gear.

    • @TSTindustries
      @TSTindustries  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      On this bike the rider should actually take a wider line and keep the speed up. Dropping a gear there puts the bike very close to redline. The rider is learning this bike. Coming from a 1000cc bike there is a big difference in technique. You will see progress through the season.

    • @TSTindustries
      @TSTindustries  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That instrument cluster has been crashed and doesn't work properly. We will replace it at some point, likely with a data logging aftermarket dash like the AIM one or HM.

  • @cstavro

    So at full throttle in 6th gear the Speedo says "1" and otherwise it displays nothing. I'd say it works perfectly.

    • @TSTindustries
      @TSTindustries  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The donor for this build was a crashed bike. Evidently the speedo cluster sustained damage in the original crash. We didn't find out until we ran the bike around the track. This component will be replaced at some point.

      You are absolutely correct and I do realize that. Coming from racing a 1000cc bike without any time to get my head wrapped around how a little bike should be ridden yielded wrong lines requiring too much decel. Once I get some seat time on this bike I will be doing it right.

    • @TSTindustries
      @TSTindustries  6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Revs I guess you didn't get to watch all the previous episodes. The road to Daytona was paved with many setbacks for us. We finished this bike in it's present form as the trailer was packed for transport. We had to drop a bone stock motor in it and go racing without any shakedown or tuning. This was basically a play to get any points instead of none. I am also fresh off racing a big bike with no little bike skills so my lines were way off for that machine, and power off/on was in the wrong places. The brakes also didn't break in until half way through the event so had no confidence of where they grab. We were going against 500 machines and people who had all sorts of mods done to their bikes. The good stuff is yet to come. This series is meant to document the progress and not merely show the ultimate result. I hope you stick around to see how far we go from here.

    • @linux_38

      Revs seriously? Its the stock motor also in my opinion it did well with the stock engine.
