  • www.m0a.com/lig... Radio failure is no fun! Trying to remember your light gun signals makes the situation even more difficult! Let's just say I had a very interesting flight today that involved a loss of communications. Check out the video below and then be sure to leave me a comment.

I had issues with my communications last weekend in a class Delta. I think we need to mesmerize these signals, which is why I am watching this video.

I know I am a little late to the party however I was flying into KORL and lost the radio about 8 miles out and was already under ATC squak and was already cleared to land before the radio went out. Sure enough the green light was in the window of the tower. Once landed I cycled the power and alternator switches and got the radios back. The lights do work even though you have to look for them. Luckily I was able to contact the tower before I parked and wasn't greeted by the black vehicle or told to call in. This is one of those topics one needs to glance over every now and then. A sticker on the knee board never hurts either along with the emergency squak codes and frequencies as I just used a sharpie on the metal knee board I fly with when I was in training years ago and still use a knee board with laminated checklist and grease pencil for notes.

I think these are something you have to see in person. You can't rely on TH-cam footage to get an impression of the real lights. I'm gonna try and get a demo at some point.

I disagree. I think you should have this memorized. it's very important, but I get what you mean about focusing on flight first in an emergency

Merely reading from the single screen that states what to do is not very helpful. We do not need anyone's expertise for that. How about explaining some scenarios that might occur? ie. Getting the Flashing Green, entering the pattern, turning base, turning final and the light stays Flashing Green. What then? What is the pilot to do?
What are they saying if you land, turn off at the runway exit, catch your breath, stop, and turn around to see Flashing Red. What is the pilot to do?

    Hello.
Watched your video, you were a bit fast explaing the light gun signals.
My first day up flying as a new pvt pilot,on a cross country flt Central Florida, after ATIS at field I intended to land at, I could not contact the tower though I could them, i tried grnd frequencysame issue. I flew clear of the airspace to try figure out issue l,where else I could go. From my chart I was some 40 miles nw of West Palm Beach,ah ha class "C" radar. I squeaked 7600,I circled near the field outside the pattern checking for traffic,I entered pattern landed safely,I did not observe any light signals, taxied to bro who gave me the tower tel number I called was told KPBI gave them a heads up re my squeal. I asked about not seeing any light signals, their reply, was told they didnt know where the gun was maybe in ib a cabinet someplace.
