My great great great great grandfather was John MacPherson of Knoydart Scotland who fought in the battle of Culloden and came to Nova Scotia Canada in 1792. There was two other families MacDonalds who also fought in the battle of Culloden that came to Nova Scotia. The three families lived in Knoydart Nova Scotia. So much rich Scottish history in Nova Scotia.
Amazing Debora! My ancestors also fought for Bonnie Prince Charlie at Culloden, though I don’t know of any that headed to Nova Scotia but I know there are MacEachens there!
@@RobinHutchinson-io7un he was just a young lad at the battle. There is a cairn in Knoydart Nova Scotia with three names on it. His name and two MacDonald names.
My grandmother was Scottish. We were extremely close. She lived with us for a time. I loved her wisdom. She was a great lady & adored by the entire family. Her family was from Edinburgh. I will never forget the lady. Thank you for reminding me of the spirit of Scotland. I am proud to have Scottish blood in my veins.
My Spanish/Puerto Rican father raised me with the language and culture. Never knew much about my mom. Only that she could be Irish or German. The other night I discovered I’m half Scottish through Ancestry.. this is so beautiful and fascinating. Hopefully one day, I can visit. Scotland has a such a rich and intact history, Im in awe . ❤ Thank you for sharing this !
My goodness, it's so beautiful 🥺❤ I recently discovered that I have alot of Scottish ancestry 😊 I'm learning all I can. When the Scottish came to America, they were good friends with the Cherokee. They lived and worked side by side and intermarried. The similar ways they lived is really interesting!! Thank you!! 😊❤
I would love to visit Scotland before I pass. My ancestors hail from Scotland and I feel a deep kinship to all things Scottish. This was a fantastic tour and I appreciate you taking the time to tour this museum and sharing it with us.
We have similar open-air museums in Germany. They are a fantastic way to get a feel for how everyday life used to be. Standing in a real room where generations have lived and worked, seeing the light through the windows, the old utensils, breathing the air in such a house, gives impressions that are not possible through a book, photos or films.
Thank you for this tour. It's a reality check for most of us who never knew what our ancestors no doubt lived through. My family lived in Scotland, we think the northern part, slowly moving to Canada then to the US a 150 yrs ago. It was heart warming to hear my grand father who still had a bit of his Scottish accent; just a few words that he automatically spoke that sounds somewhat like you. SCOTLAND is beautiful to be sure, but wasn't an easy way of life in times past. This was wonderful & I love your videos of this beautiful country. Thank you!!!
Hello, I am a descendant of James Douglas also known as “The Black “ my Douglas ancestors migrated to the colonies in 1700 and set up life in North Carolina, I never was interested in genealogy till a few yrs ago and I am so very interested in my Scottish heritage. I watch videos like this to learn about my ancestors and how they lived life.
Superb John. Love the old traditional buildings. It's sad that people didn't and still haven't learned to live alongside the animals we share the planet with.
Thanks for showing how our Ancestors lived so many years ago. So much information today tells how our Ancestors battled each other when their clans were angry. Ancestorial Grandfather fighting Ancestorial Grandfather. It is so good to see they loved Family and lived, played, and worked somewhat normal lives for the time.
Beautiful. Amazing still in 2024 places like this still exists. Preserving history is important. I have a fondness for Scotland though I've never been there.
Several states have areas called The Highlands in the Appalachian Mtn. Chain! They start in the State of Georgia and run up through several States in the Eastern US. to Maine. Other than the buildings it looks like East Tennessee. I loved the tour! Thank You for taking me along!
This is fantastic! I do have some Scottish heritage (along with red hair😂). There are these kinds of open air museums all over the USA. A great one at Plymouth, Massachusetts that shows how the Pilgrims lived. I’m directly descended from one of the Mayflower passengers so it’s especially interesting. Also, Williamsburg, Virginia, the “wild” West, etc. I loved going to them as a school kid and don’t see enough of the schools taking the kids to these great learning experiences where they get a real example of how difficult life could be. Get them out in fresh air and away from their computers, video games and iPhones. Sadly, progress doesn’t always make life better, does it? Great job, young man!!!
Thank you for this incredible video. There is nothing I love more then history. Although I’m Canadian My heritage is From Scotland and Ireland. It’s a privilege to see this magnificent village.
WOW!!! John that was an AMAZING TOUR🥰 my favorite part was the 1700’s. I can only imagine how hard life was back then. The Scottish are most definitely a hardy people. It was something to see how the changes in time took place. Thank you again for an amazing tour. Sent this to a friend of mine who has Scottish roots.
Beautiful presentation, just sub'd. Your affable and pleasant personality coupled with your knowledge and wisdom of the areas and time makes your videos so much more enjoyable than most others Thank you🙂
It’s cool Scotland has a 1700s outdoor museum. It lets people see how the Scottish lived in the highlands. I’d love to see it in person. And the castle’s.
You John have no business working when you are one of the most Incredible historians and speakers as well as the Best Detectorist and video makers out there!!!! I Sir are impressed beyond words!!! Just can never quit watching as long as you are still posting videos!!! ❤❤❤❤👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you for sharing such a lovely and informative tour! I'm proud to have Scottish heritage on my Mother's side but unfortunately will more than likely never have the opportunity to set foot in Scotland, so I'm so appreciative for a tour such as this. You have a talent for guiding!! From Pennsylvania in The United States....thank you!!!! ~ Lisa S.
Same, only I'm from California's Central Coast. Don't you adore his accent? His perfect enunciation shows me my own lazy speech 🫢. This village would be a great place for people to dress in period costumes and do the typical day in the life activities, including their music at least once in awhile. Some aspects of this village reminds me of ancient Cherokee villages. Looks like you'd just want to hang out for the day to change gears in your mind to get into it, you know? If you're reading, thank you for sharing by posting this! ❤🇺🇸🤝🏻🏴 ♾️
What a brilliant place ... fascinating... happy to know it exists. Yes we do tend to romanticise the old way of living - but those buildings are so cute !!
We were in Perth in July this year, planned to visit the museum and did not make it because of heavy rain. Thank you for showing us what we missed. Love the Hairy Coos, was able to feed some a few carrots on one of our stops in the Highlands.
Great Job John. I am coming to Scotland, and I will watch all your videos so I can tell the travel agent what I want to see...this Museum is wonderful. Just found you on youtube, so this is my first video of yours I have watched. Great JOB!
That was fascinating, John. Sure makes me wish I was about 30 years younger and able to visit Scotland. Thanks for sharing this fabulous piece of history!
Great tour through some earlier centuries, John! But frankly spoken, I got a little disappointed! We got to see quite a number of animals carved out of wood, but were the heck`s the Haggis 🤔🙄🙁🥺? I`d have been happy to see any kind, 1-, 2-, 3-, 4- or more legged, I don`t care 😁🤪😘!
I felt this tour in my bones and my soul. My family came from the highlands and moved from there to Canada. My grandfathermoved from there to the United States. Thank you for this amazing journey back into my past.
Thank you so much for the trip back in time! My Scottish ancestors lived in the city so their accomodations were different but wonderful to see how their village friends and family lived!
Hi John I've been to the folk museum a few times there is always something new to see its a great place to visit thanks for the tour . your a fountain of knowledge.
My ancestors that gave me my name are originally from Galloway and this is really fun to watch. It’s important to know how they lived and know everything they went through for us.
I had the incredible privilege of living in Scotland for three years before (sadly) returning to the US. Thank you for this lovely reminder of the beauty and charm that I so desperately miss. 🏴❤️🙏
I was there this past May. It was wonderful! I was only able to see a small portion of it as I was with my mother who could not walk very far. The schoolhouse was wonderful. The cafe and gift shop were great. I got my great niece a wee highland cow plushie that she sleeps with every night! Wonderful stop on any day out in the Highlands! ❤
What a fantastic tour! My ancestry goes back to the Highlands on my mother's side and I've always felt an affinity for the region. I suppose industrialization ended this centuries old way of life? This was beautifully done tour. Thank you!
My Mother was a McLeod, descending from the MacLeod’s from Inveness, Scotland. The original immigrant Peter McLeod and his brothers settled in North Carolina and southern Mississippi, early 1800’s. Thank you for showing us this rich Highland heritage! My grandfather Byron McLeod died in Inverness, Florida; which seemed “fitting”. Look forward to more of your videos!
Greetings from Maryland- thanks for a wonderful tour, John. New York state has something very similar, the Gennessee Country Village and Museum. Over 600 acres - they took original structures from around the state, dismantled them, and rebuilt them on-site. Covers mostly 1700s and 1800s. But they do have at least two Victorian homes, one of which, if I remember correctly, was originally a brothel in NYC. Tons of art and artifacts, too. These are the best museums ever!
There is also the Farmers Museum at Cooperstown NY which is a similar sort of concept and Upper Canada Village on the St Lawrence River in south eastern Ontario, Canada.
My maternal Grandmother lived in such a village. I was curious about the wood turning, appreciate you showing the tools. 80 years Scotch/Norweigan old, living in Hilo, Hawaii. Built our house, have cows.
I'm from NC and my family has been there since beginning when king gave them the land. I grew up and went to school in Hilo and live in GA now on farm. I went to Wikeia high school. I love history and ancestry and grew up with grandparents and great grandparents who told us stories of family history and lived in old homes that where in family over 100 yrs. I am thinking of building this type of building on my property in our woods or similar dugout . I appreciate wood working and old skills and those who keep them alive.
We visited this open air museum begin july 2023, on our 10day roadtrip through Scotland. We had a great day, as also the rest of our tour. We're definitly coming back to Scotland! Greetings from Belgium.
John, I am enjoying these tours and am subscribed but I would gladly be a Patreon if you would set up such a thing. This is great advertisement for your business but some of us will never be able to make the journey and I for one would be glad to reimburse you for your work.
How beautiful, clean, & tidy everything is, a remembrance of what my grandmother taught me to be by her example & my scholastic educational validated her knowledge explicitly. Amen!
i just love the old thatch roofs and stone buildings. we are fortunate that scotland has maintained and moved these for all of the world to enjoy. it is so important for us to see how our predecessors lived. it can help us all understand why many of them moved to other countries, but more importantly, why so many of them stayed
With the way this world is right now, I don't think I'd mind living in the 1700's village. Life was hard, but it was also simple.....for the most part.
❤ we enjoyed this very much. My husband's last name is St.Clair so of course we know some of his heritage is Scottish. Really much more than that seeing that we are from the U.S. So he loves exploring things like this online. You did an excellent job explaining about the village. ❤
So beautiful I would love to visit. I'm a history nut who longs for the old ways and the old days I've never known. I wish I knew the world not divided by corporate mass media.
In 1725 my gggggrt grandfather Wallace came here from Scotland. He settled in South Carolina and from there his children wound up in N.C. Tennessee and Virginia. I can see the reasons the Scots settled in the Appalachian mountains. Scotland and the Appalachians look just alike. They probably felt right at home here. Plus they had bears and wolves again🙂 Thank you for the tour!
I love my wee homeland! I lived abroad for forty years and not a moment went by that I didn't miss it. I came back in 2020 with exactly the same Glaswegian accent I left with! Old Scottish saying: "Here's tae us! Wha's like us? Gey few an' they'e a' deid!"
Thank you for the step back in time, what a beautiful view of the past in the Highlands. I'm in Ohio in the USA. I cleaned for a Scottish woman that gave me homemade Scottish Shortbread for Christmas. I made it from her recipe, it's delicious! 😊
Thank you so very much! It is absolutely astounding and incomprehensible to see the difference in the way of life and Scotland compared to England in the 1700s. I definitely will put this on my bucket list for when I go to Scotland!
Just wonderful,,,my children have McRae's, MacDonald's, MacKenzie's, Fraser's, Beaton's, Mackays and last but not least Lindsay ancestors, we hope to come and see all the homelands of those ancestors...this would definitely be a worthwhile stop....very appreciated for these tours from this Canadian.

My father's family were Smiths under the MacPherson clan. Pulled into the clan because they were good at smithing armor in particular. Supposedly.
Hmm..he fought at Culloden is 1746 and emigrated 46 years later ! Are you sure ?

Listening to English spoken with the Scottish accent is like listening to music. Thank you for the photography and narration. Lovely 🌹
Lots of different Scottish accents just like England. His is nice but wait to you meet a ned from Glasgow lol. Worst accent in the UK.

Fascinating! The life span in the 1700’s must have been very short. Thank you so much for taking us along.
My pleasure Hazel. Thanks for watching
Personally I don’t believe so, they lived a much healthier lifestyle as we do today and that without big Pharma 😊
Actually, it wasn’t, at least in my own family genealogy.
Hi John I've been to the folk museum a few times there is always something new to see its a great place to visit thanks for the tour . your a fountain of knowledge.

Amazing. I do some wood turning too so appreciate the workmanship! Or workwomanship! ….. love a bit of turned wood!!! Amazing 🤩

Thank you for the step back in time, what a beautiful view of the past in the Highlands. I'm in Ohio in the USA. I cleaned for a Scottish woman that gave me homemade Scottish Shortbread for Christmas. I made it from her recipe, it's delicious! 😊
Many thanks. Hope to see you on the next virtual tour best wishes
And I love shortbread 🤤
How did I just find this channel. Now I know where the historical perspective on the detectorist channel comes from. Wonderful!
Loved this tour John and you never cease to amaze me where you’ll end up next! Absolutely beautiful, entertaining and educational. Thank you. 😊
Aww thanks Dawn 🥰
Thank you so very much! It is absolutely astounding and incomprehensible to see the difference in the way of life and Scotland compared to England in the 1700s. I definitely will put this on my bucket list for when I go to Scotland!

Much appreciated, many thanks! New video just uploaded
My McDonalds ancestors immigrated to Canada in 1770’s 😊
