  • I was warned this wouldn't be easy! Don't forgot to remove those staples before you start prying away at the lens like I did!
    I took a risk on buying some cheap lenses from eBay or Amazon, I'll post the exact link later today!

    Just wanted to be clear, is this the way it supposed to be done or an example of how not to do it. I'm not exactly sure. Either way... informative. And entertaining.

    It's actually pretty easy without the permatrator honestly. Once you get the first corner pulled apart all you have to do is give a little pull as you work your fingers down and the entire lens should start separating. And as for taking the permaseal out it's best to use pliers, get a piece of the permaseal pulled up and then wrap that pliers around it and spin them around the perimeter and it should get long stretches of the permaseal out at a time.

    I look forward to see or hear if round two goes better now that you know about those little clips. Also I'd probably have a few trim removal tools to wedge into the gaps so you can keep working along without it closing up.

    So in other words, you can take these headlight apart. Some people were saying that you need to cut them open.
    Well guess it's time to buy some new lenses and replace them. I've done a retrofit project when I had my mk4 GLI, it was quite a fun process.

    • @FAZEDTom
      @FAZEDTom  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey yes. It’s much easier to bake them apart. I think it’s pretty fun, just a long process

  • @kennyq45
    @kennyq45 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey man, great job sticking it out until you got the lens off. Other than baking are there any other tips you could pass along to make this job easier? Thanks!

    • @FAZEDTom
      @FAZEDTom  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey thanks man! I would call up all your family and friends trying to find a big enough oven 😂 it just took very long with the heat gun and the headlight housing took a beating. I'm gonna open more headlights soon so I'll make a video on baking them. Besides patience, the biggest thing I can recommend is having pry tools that are gentle (like an interior pry tool set) so that your housings stay in better shape than mine did; the screwdrivers are rough because they're metal and, most importantly, narrow.

    I have the OEM Xenon MK6 headlight with the modules. When baking, do you think it could harm the connectors? Because when you remove the modules there are a few connectors there. Also, did you like the cheap lenses?

    • @johndorian1753
      @johndorian1753 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You put oven at 100-110 Celsius for 10 minutes, put some wood on bottom to not make contact with oven. For my halogen lights one had permaseal another one had butil seal. Second one i literally opened it in 2 minutes after oven, the permaseal one was pain in the ass. All depends what kind of seal you got on yours, if after oven the seal is like very soft you are in luck, if its hard as in beginning than you will need seal remover like here. Connectors wont bake, halogen and xenon put a lot of stress on those more above 100 degree. I recommend if you want to do a retrofit use LED lens they are way safer and they cost around 100-150 euro.

    • @FAZEDTom
      @FAZEDTom  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I removed the modules from the bottom of the headlight. Kept the rest of the headlight intact and the heat didn’t damage them, put them in oven around 220F. And no the cheap lenses sucked lol had to trim extraneous tabs and they still didn’t fit great

    So...sort of a fire hazard method. I haven't tried it yet. But saw others do it. You take a box big enough to hold the headlight in. Make a hole in it. And stick the heat gun inside. Sort of handmade oven.

The chrome on the lights come right off with oven cleaner and there is shiny black paint just like the euro headlights. So no need to paint only need to remove chrome. Holy thread revival but I know the side markers (chrome interior) of 3rd gen 4Runners people will fill them with a mix of oven cleaner/acetone and water and shake them until the chrome is off. Think that would work? Or did you have to scrub it off with oven cleaner?

    • @godwinonoh5329
      @godwinonoh5329 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey guys. Permaseal doesn't react to heat like butyl sealants. That's why they call it cold glue. The purpose of introducing heat to the headlight is to soften the edge of the housing so you can get enough room to insert your prying tools and also to unhook the clips holding the lens in place. There are specific tools like hooks that are meant to be inserted into the channel where you pull to cut through the permaseal like butter

      lol what's up Brandon. I think with some more heat and patience, I could do it without cracking the lens. I don't think it'd be easy by any means. My lenses were already a bit scratched so I wasn't concerned about cracking them haha.
