- League of Legends is a game where the meta is constantly shifting. Every patch is different, with certain champions and strategies usually being the right pick. Which means there are always bad ideas.
But, sometimes, the insane, idiotic ideas are actually genius. Today we wanted to celebrate the craziest picks, plays and strategies in League of Legends. Here are the Top 10 Insane League Strats… that actually worked.

Half of this top 10 is about SKT's opponents having to be creative to defeat SKT.
(the other half is about TSM's opponnents trolling them and winning anyway)

ItsMorphinTime1518 Tbh on the second point, TSM is extremely reactive on their game plans (look up how TSM coaches make all players keep track of their mistakes during games, so players are afraid to take risks and make pro active plays). Since TSM plays so passive and rigid, wildcard strats work really well on them because they are so used to playing the passive game, and just let the strats take over.
I laughed when he called TSM one of na's titans, they are inconsistent beyond all belief and have never been close to titan position outside maybe season 2

I think you missed why the Leona pick was so insane. Yes the rune choice was wild but it was also in the ardent meta where people thought you could only play ardent supports. They decided to move the ardent builder into the jungler with Ivern so they would run Leona bot lane.

I think they already documented that in another video(or a partner of game leap) that's why they didn't mentioned it because it's just going to be redundant at least thats what i think

Thats why its not an insane strategy for me. They did leave the ardent behind they just moved it. They still played the ardent meta.
My favourite part was with how much confidence Caps said "Of course" to the question "But will it win us the game?"

well vayne is THE anti-tank champion of the game and he was facing Sion top, Galio mid and Alistar Supp, so even if uncomon, it's not that much of a troll pick, if the team want to be super tanky and let their adc deal tons of damage, if you have a tank piercer you can stop that strat !

Saw that game, Bjergsen bodied Hai in mid, got solo killed a few times. Teemo got carried honestly.
Teemo only purpose at that game was his shrooms which is really OP considering how important vision is in League of Legends.
Broken as in the hidden passive of global taunt. Hai was mostly likely gonna lose mid against a berj anyways so they doubled down.
He was broken because of his shrooms, he wasn't a teamfighter. They used shrooms to force TSM off obj and into their own base.

@@yozarahirvi4750 it was traditional back then seeing 2-3 AP items on galio with him being mid devastating most champions with his Winds of War (Q) while pushing lane and going for roams with his ult, and Caps lost early on in mid, but turned the game around when he killed tristana like we saw in the clip. if he had lost to trist there, it was FNC loss.
Love the list but how can you not include garen yuumi? It literally made garen, a champ never played professionally, not only relevant but broken

Yeah I was also thinking that like, I vividly remember that game. It almost didn't work.
Seriously I saw the scoreboard after he said that Faker crumbled and was confused.
It wasn't Faker that crumbled, it was his teammates. They had very poor decision making on the early stages. The teleport by Marin into the bottom lane, knowing that 4 members are coming, Wolf coming to to help Marin(which is dead for sure) and many more. Early game leads are what killed them.
Right lmao, couldn't have been the 3-14 bot lane that crumbled. It was the 4-2 ~300 cs mid laner.
When moscow 5 went roaming alistar with solo urgot bot. That was sick. Season 1 or 2.
Roaming Alistar was a thing from season 0, and that's my moment of proud 'cause it was me who showed Edward that the thing still worked.
@@chupasaurus solo bot urgot was a coolest thing. legends say that Genja was trying to dodge a soloq game and left with locked urgot. Urgot turned out to be strong enough to beat duolanes.

I feel like you missed the reason why the pyke was so insane on G2 : They literally played him at any role, not only support or top.
Also, would have loved to see the Levi nocturne funneling strat and a honorable to all the old UOL drafts, with shacos, poppys and udyrs being thrown in.

The smite Heimer with Blitz/Cait mid and the solo Olaf was a master class in cheese. Cj Entus was still able to make a couple plays but they never got a look at anything but a couple kills.
I'm a little sad to not see the Nocturne exp funneling strat Levi used at worlds. That was an amazing strat and honestly the precursor to funneling. I mean who expects a nocturne ult at 6 mins?
EDG's Morgana mid isn't even a strategy; it's just a normal pick wtf

There was funnelling in pro games like 5 months before levi and his team did that at worlds. it honestly wasn't that insane of a strategy. a good one? Sure. but an INSANE one? Nope.

I had the chance to witness MF support in person and that made the entire thing worth it. The crowd was going NUTS as soon as he locked it and every time he made a play the whole arena erupted. Didn't know that I was gonna be witnessing essentially one of the greatest best of 5s (if not the greatest) in league history.
I hate that pick because people in my games started picking it but it was not to counter zyra, for 2 days there were only mfs supp left and right.

Yup. I've been to league events since season 2 and nothing has compared to that moment with that mix of excitement and confusion. Easily the best Bo5 I've ever watched.
I feel you, so stoked that I experienced it live at MSG. AND the famous Full Map Ashe Arrow. two historic LoL plays and I was there. Amazing.
By far the best Bo5 League has ever had. MF support, the Ashe arrow snipe to end the game. Everything about this series was hype

I really don't know how you can't include that game. It was absolutely insane. They ran Smite Heimerdinger and triple Doran's Blade Blitzcrank, and basically shoved mid with 4 people to take inhibitor in less than 10 minutes. And this was GAME 5 in the championship match of a tournament where GSG was an unsponsored amateur team against essentially the best team in Korea. There were so many iconic personalities in this match before they were big. PoohMandu played the Heimer and Easyhoon, Acorn, and Heart also played for GSG. Not to mention the game was casted by PapaSmithy and PastryTime back when they were casting out of their bedrooms essentially.
100% the gsg game should have been #1. It was such a specific team comp they prepared for a specific scenario, then had the balls to pull it off in an elimination game. It was super risky, but they executed it so well that they dominated. I've never seen such a crazy strat in pro play.
The fact that it wasn't included in this list is embarrassing.
#1 was pretty underwhelming, you even didn't go into why it counters the Leblanc in the first place.
yeah and if you look at the stats at 16:02 it doesn't seem like they lost because faker couldn't do anything with that lb... He is the only one with good stats, he had 2 of his teams 25 deaths...
Yeah the whole video looks like it was pretty rushed, with no explanation whatsoever. They didn't explain the "funneling gold to one champion strat", yes they showed 3 secs of Taric + Yii jungle which was the birth of this strat and the bane of soloQ for some time but they didn't explain shit about why it is so powerfull and how it works. They also showed Khalista top as it was something no one did. Every cheeser toplane in soloQ play Khalista/Vayne/Quinn top in order to outrange their opponent, what was special is that a purely SoloQ strat worked in competitive league and they didn't even explained that... For someone that doesn't play the game, this video is incomprehensible and lacks informations.
Julien Gaumez to some extent the comp shut him down because if he was against a more standard composition then he probably would have 1v9d
Ok, so Maokai prevents faker from being within 525 units of his fatass because Mao cc outright counters leblanc's distortion return move as he intangibly follows and cc locks her down regardless of where she goes. After that, the comp can cc chain off of maokai well with long-range morg q and also morg aoe r (625 range) to force leblanc to move (especially good on defense as leblanc is assassin). Their adc is sivir which stops more than half of leblanc's damage (in a frantic burst) as her spellshield can stop LB's q empowered trigger and another damaging ability at the same time eating it. Morgana also prevents some more burst with black shield and can ensure maokai/ali isn't cc'd, to confirmed cc the LB. Ali also can break off of cc with his r to ensure leblanc stays cc'd as well. All of this is important because a lot of LB's damage is close up from her distortion if she wants a oneshot without missing chains (compared to other mages). Sivir also gives huge team speed up on r to make playing around (even chasing after) distortion even easier but that's just icing. I don't think Eve adds too much there but she does have sneaky burst which makes LB more scared off cc.

And I think it's really interesting that more than 1 of these stats have been from teams with PowerOfEvil on them, but not by PoE himself. At his best, he's so stable that his team can get away with all kinds of shenanigans.

I dont know why in their mind anyone would think it's a "troll pick". Nowadays there's so much ADC played toplane that it wasnt anything surprising. Just next ADC added to the list of Lucian, Vayne etc.
If they wanted to add something recent from toplane, Soraka would be better. I remember when Wunder picked her in season 9 everyone was talking how "competition in EU is so bad that he can pick such trash champs and win" and suddenly half a year later people realized this shit is atually OP and everyone started playing it.

Kalista solo lane isn't even a new pick. There is a Korean one trick that played primarily Kalista mid for over a year on a high level. Korean players are just really slow in picking up new things or experimenting, so it took some time until someone (in this case the Shy in China) had the balls to actually try it and see how it went.
Kalista got a bunch of buffs a while back and we all know that unless Kalista's legs are broken she'll be meta.
I’m here just looking for the GAM’s Nocturne at Worlds 2017. The lane swap, the duo jungle, off-meta nocturne got his lv6 after 5 minutes. Everything is just INSANE.

When Moscow 5 created a new way of jungling - hard counter jungling with shyvana. It evolved all games from that point and onwards.

Haha true. Shows just how much teams fear SKT they pull out their cheese strats for them. Also cheese strats mainly come out in international events that teams are saving them for and who goes to more international events than SKT.

GSG un NLB winter championship back in 2012 with a Heimer jungle 4 man mid comp. Not only did it work but they speed ran the rift. Sub 20 minute game!
I remember top 2 stunned the entire world with that pick. I fell in love with that underdog team, the ROX Tigers and years ago with Unicorns Of Love with Power OF Evil in the midlane, classic teams.
There's so much history already in LoL and now i realise how magic it is to revive these type of moments.
If only Rox tigers had won that bo5 i would havebeen very happy back then.

They twisted reality to fit their narrative, like the Teemo pick actually served no purpose and wasn't OP at all in the patch but hey you gotta do you what you gotta do to rack up these noice views.

He was strong because of his shrooms, which forced TSM off objectives and into their own base, because if they walked out and got shroomed they would lose half their HP. Teemo was nerfed the following patch I believe. Be real yourself.
so u telling me that EDG comp was targeting faker. even edg said it was design for faker and they think faker will pick lebanc one game. and when it was game 5 they let it out. fakers lebanc was 100% winrate at that time.

There was a game where they basically went all mid with a hard siege comp when the enemy team had poor wave clear. I was pretty sure it was anchored by a Heimerdinger mid, but I'm having a hell of a time finding it. I was kind of expecting to see it here.

There was a game last year in the Korea region, dont remember the team, but it was kind of a funnel strat that involved a trist top.
It was so strong, that steamed rolled top, got all the platings, got mid turret, got all the platings, then went bot and did the same thing.
She had like an full item and a half advantage at 15 minutes.

Let's be honest, Ryu's 1v1 vs Faker is actually the most embarrassing loss in league history, and one that nobody will forget
KT was already losing that game hard.
Faker styling on Ryu was just the icing on the cake.
Meanwhile, Hai was getting dumped on by bjerg and the game was going 50/50 between C9 and TSM. That game was totally winnable by TSM but they lost.

I still remember that 5 game series between SKT and EDG. That year Pawn went crazy and actually outplayed Faker soo many times. But that LeBlanc counter comp was nasty.
The Froggen Bot Blitzcrank and Krepo Mid Anivia lane/role swap Gamit vs EG was a nice change of pace when pretty sure all EG games at the time if i remeber right where drawn out snoozefests
remember when faker picked olaf mid to counter irelia mid back in like season 6. neither champ ever had been mid before and faker first blooded irelia at lvl 1 lmfao

Urgot Adc solo laner vs Jana and Corki bot, plus Shaco and Alistar jungle.
Urgot dominated the lane 1v2. It was an amazing game.
I couldn’t believe UoL’s Yorick + Cassiopeia S5 against FNC wasn’t on here. I never even dreamed of that comp but they blew FNC out of the water. One of my favorite games to rewatch.
Good idea for a video, and I agree with all the choices, overall ! But it would have been better if you had quickly explained for every strat. TF especially would have been good to know. Some explanations that were lacking, imo :
- Teemo allowed C9 to control an entire half of the map while they were pressuring the rest. It definitely was not OP, proof is that Teemo never appeared again and kinda sucked in this game too. That's also why it was a "one time" strategy: once you understand that, it's easy to counter at their level.
- The idea of Pyke solo lane is that he can sustain easily the pressure with his regen and, no matter how bad your laning phase is, his ultimate gives so much gold that you'll come back in mid game. It wasn't a especially a "comfort pick".
Also, your choice for "best insane strat ever" is to put a mid laner in a mid lane? I get that it was risky strat to let Faker picks LB, especially in the 2-2 MSI finals context. But 1st place... ?
Well, I guess everyone has its own view on what is an "insane strat"! The most important is that the 10 choices are good !

I started the strat of missing every last hit on minion back in 2013. it hasn't worked yet but when it does it will be game changing.
TPA once use the "protect the vayne" strat many years ago, that was fun to watch.
Could say for Caps' Vayne mid, Rekkles had faith at least lol

I watched Jungle TF live. Such a good draft. The important thing was the flex. TSM thought he would go mid and countered him by picking Xerath (who outranges him), but they flipped it and put LeBlanc against Xerath, which is a really good matchup.
one of my favorite strats was the double jungle strat from moscow5 with the urgot solo bot on the IEM Hanover
If i don't see some old UOL stuff like "old poppy vs mundo" or "jungle on hit twisted fate" i'm going to be extremely disappointed.

I am really sad that they didn't actually highlighted why TF was such a great idea. Xerath at the time was hard counter to twisted fate, so UoL baited Bjergsen into picking Xerath so they picked LeBlanc against which Xerath is pretty much useless, because nobody expected him at a different position.
Swain vs Maokai was another pocket pick of UOL

One of my favorite matches was Dig vs Moscow 5. Alistar/Lee Sin paired up roaming the jungle and urgot was solo ADC in the bot.
The flashbacks i get from taric sona made me want to call my therapist again

One of my Favorit picks was at worlds 2019 groupstage where skt picked Kayle ADC against garen yuumi.
Lot of inaccuracies, embelishment and bending of facts just to fit the narrative on this video. Rather disappointed.
#10 teemo was not op that patch. Hai just tried out teemo mid because he wanted to try a strat used by a challenger teemo OTP named mahcash$, where he uses shrooms instead of wards for vision and zone control even if the champ himself was useless in that level of play. He mentioned it in the post game lobby as well.
#6 the vayne mid by caps actually didn't work. He died 4 times throughout the game and had no map pressure at all, his team had to 4v5 while he farmed up from the deficit.
The only reason it paid off was in the last team fight since msf had drafted 4 tanks and 1 dmg, caps was finally able to dive in and assassinate the adc before dying himself.
#2 syndra bot wasn't really 'insane', since that year saw a lot of mages play bot. It was even more expected since perkz was a mid who had just swapped to adc that year.
The pyke was also quite popularly flexed to solo lanes that year by many other teams.
The really 'insane' part of that strat was combining those 2 with a Lissandra mid for huge aoe dmg and slow from her exploding ice zombie passive. Apick that caps usually never plays.
#1 By the time EDG finally managed a shut down on faker (which was the sole purpose of their whole comp) he was already 3/0/3.. lol. So the strat decidedly didn't work.
The reason they won that game was because of the crazy amount of crowd control they had which led to SKT's bot lane getting owned instead.
Also.. LeBlanc being nigh unkillable and still getting kills vs a team designed only to negate you = 'crumbled'..?

Pyke wasnt played by aby team in pro play on mid or top. There were some people who tried it in soloq but it wasnt popular at all. 90% of people was like "wtf" when Wunder pulled it off. People knew Syndra can be played bot but she became popular AFTER Perkz picked it here.

You will probably find even some top Yuumi high elo one tricks, but that doesnt change a fact Pyke was never played by any team mid or top until G2 did it, so OP is obviously wrong. And even after them I think there might be only few instances of Pyke solo lane later. Maybe I shouldnt used phrase "wasnt popular at all" since there were of course people who played it, but it wasnt popular or successful enough in high elo for anyone to even think about using it top in pro play until G2 did it

2 out of 10 of these aren't strats there just off picks 1 is about picking a rune what a joke most of them are just champions being used in a different position like there was only 1 strat and that was the gold funnel mention
That number one pick is so garbage, that wasn't an insane draft or pick it was a standard counter pick. 🤦♂️
It ain't garbage, as it was a Game 5. Faker had a 100% win rate with LB which was pretty OP back then. So what they did was counter Faker. At that time, he was all over the place. If you hunt him down, SKT are lost. That's what they've changed later on. Khan was given so many opportunities, Teddy is now carrying hard too.

Overall good vid, I disagree with some points. My main disagreement would be Caps' Vayne pick. It may have done the winning play that game, but that was literally all it did. If he didn't do that winning play, Fnatic was more than likely going to easily lose that game. That entire game, the vayne was doing pretty bad. I feel that everything else deserves to be on the list though.
Garen Yuumi? Also i don't think Leona supp belongs on this list.
With the meta of the time of that series being ardent censer only, Ignar's fervor leona is rightfully there.

It was at that time in the game. Basically, the game was dominated by on-hit AD carries paired with an enchanter support that bought the item ''Ardent Censer''. Everybody hated that meta, it was boring to watch and it pretty much revolved around wich support could get the item faster. What misfits did was revolutionary. They picked an insanely aggressive bot lane against a bot lane that wanted to scale. Not only was the pick itself completely different from the meta, no one played fervor of battle Leona. And the craziest part about it was that they picked something completely out of meta against the 3-time world champions and it worked.
The Bo5 between SKT and Misfits became the foundation of what we now call: ''play your own style''. Before this Bo5 everybody was looking at what the Korean teams were doing and how to copy them, but misfits just played their own style and almost beat the most dominant team in LOL history.
Misfits showed the world that you can play differently and (almost) beat the best team to ever exist in League.

there was a kalista one trick in korean challenger who played her mid for the past 3ish years. theshy faced up against him when he got autofilled mid when the dude got autofilled top and theshy tilted his face off
I really believe G2 should be on this list at place 1. 2019 alone they forced Riot to change champions and the mechanics of the game just by playing it to perfection(pyke + funnel that had to be nerfed yet again after lec spring split game 2 i believe) This year Wunder was a huge reason to why Soraka top and Sona top actually were picked in soloq as well and therefore had to be nerfed yet again. I knew the faker game. But in my mind u guys made a video that stated it was more a failure of faker and his struggling season then the enemies picking a comp to defeat him( Though this is true)

This wasn't the first time that this happened though. Huni's Zilean shenanigans forced them to change Kleptomancy mastery. Hai's Teemo antics forced them to change the timer on his ultimate so that it didn't last ten minutes. Singed has the just cut top lane strategy which forced them to make minion kills take away the penalty from deaths.
Soraka and Sona were already being played in soloQ, they just were first to play it on the stage. Pretty sure about Pyke aswell

All G2 did was playing something in pro play that no one before dared to do. sure someones run ap leona jungle and it maybe will be viable in a few months who knows? Im just telling you G2 didnt do it once or twice. They doing it all the time. So yeah somebody thit it before them but zhey made it publicly known and viable.

8:36 sona taric technically wasn't popularized by TSMA. it was a bot lane boosting strat which was first started seeing in EUW soloq. the LEC pro teams catched up on to it and then abused it on stage on how broken it was.
I used to pick AP bottom lane like lux, leblanc with deathfire, ahri and oriannna for in season 3 until the no adc strats become a thing. Im happy now that my strats back then are being used.
eeeehn, most of these dont feel like insane STRATS, more like weird/innovative picks, but a lot of those play the game the same way a normal pick would, so not really a strat, just a pick. I would have DEFINETELY put GSG vs CJ Entus 4 mid strat at number 1, for example.

Clip 3 is a bot lane abusing an incredibly oppressive matchup and Leona getting fed. Albeit, the thing about his masteries was somewhat interesting, but that wasn't really too insane (and no one would have noticed it if production didn't bring it up).
Score Esports has always been hit-or-miss with their videos in my eyes. This one is definitely a miss. Keep up the work though; you do make good videos a decent amount of time.
Quinn is designed to be an anti bruiser and her kit works better as a sololaner than a botlaner so cannot be compared. Also Kalista was trash tier pick even in bottom lane
Clip 2: Kalista was turbo weak for like 3 years straight, so yea, she was kinda unexpected to be so good toplane (and holy shit, she is super strong there with Sanguine Blade)
Clip 3: This Leona was pretty much hit or miss pick. Noone else ever picked anything other than Ardent Censer support back then and Misfits wouldn't even do it if not for Ivern jungle (who can build Ardent Censer easily since he is a support jungle), this item was just that strong that it was catastrophical not to build it.

Honestly, I think UoL's triple red smite pick was pretty insane as well. They had full baron and dragon control, it actually worked out on all three champs and negated the enemy jungler. Smitefights were nonexistent and the attack speed Orianna midlane was surprisingly strong, not to mention it ignited a wave of red smite picks in solo queue.
Also, the Twisted Fate jungle was such an amazing pick because they baited the opponent into thinking it went midlane. They countered the Twisted Fate midlane with Xerath, who then got counterpicked with LeBlanc. Not only did he perform solid, it also opened up the opportunity to nullify the enemy midlaner.
Crazy to watch this older gameplay with so much less healing it's insane. No healthbars suddenly spiking back to full, no ADCs pumping their little cringebow bicycle pumps, crazy shit.
Soraka toplane, noc early lvl 6 ganks, naut mid and many more important moments I can and actually can't think about that should be put into the list
Game 2 of LEC Spring finals 2016. They basically played with no jungler. Caps on pike and Jankos on morgana stayed on bot while Perkz and Micky played mid.

Gotta say my personal favorite off-meta pick has got to be: NA LCS 2014 Summer Playoffs, Quarterfinal match between TSM and Dignatas, game 1. DIG picks Nasus (1st time picked that split) top into Maokai (10th time picked that split) to crush Dyrus in the splitpush game and solo-backdoor the nexus. Definitely mained Nasus for a solid year after that
