    Another member of Titanic's crew was unsinkable, John Priest, one of the stokers (Coal shoveler). He was in the engine room when it began to flood. He ran through a maze of decks up to the top of the ship and jumped a great height into the water, because all the lifeboats had been launched. He got frostbite, but was one of the only 7 people who was saved from the sea. In February 1916, he survived the sinking of the RMS Alcantara, an armed merchant cruiser during a battle in World War 1. Then he survived the sinking of the RMS Brittanic when it struck a mine near the Greek island Kea in November 1916. Then in April 1917, he survived the sinking of the SS Donegal, a hospital ship which was hit by a torpedo. He died several decades later of pneumonia while in bed.

    Nobody from White Star Line ever said the ship was "unsinkable" Due to its modern innovation of the time, they said in was "Practically" unsinkable. Therefore, the reason that the lifeboats were inadequate in number is because they believed that anything that was going to cause any damage to ship to use them wasn't going to sink the ship in time before they could make multiple rescues to and from the ship before it sank. The "uncluttered" look was just as bonus effect to use in promoting the Titanic.

    • @RoaringBas
      @RoaringBas ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The amount of lifeboats were simply limited because more lifeboats were not required by law. The original design from 1908 even had less lifeboats than the 1912 final design. Indeed the idea was (and is) that the vessel itself is safest place to be. The Cunard Line Mauretania and Lusitania had during their maiden voyages even less lifeboats than the Titanic. Both vessels only received six more boats under davits (and 26 collapsible lifeboats) after the Titanic disaster. The amount of lifeboats on the Titanic had nothing to do with any form of wrongdoing by the White Star Line.

    I was even more amazed to discover that the camera contained COLOUR film - I didn’t think that had been invented until years afterwards, but as the video says it was a secret at the time and these are the only pictures surviving that were taken on that film.
    What a fantastic video, and I’m just amazed these secrets haven’t been more widely exposed.

    Not marketed as unsinkable. The term came from a trade journal known as Shipbuilder Magazine. So popular that it landed in a few public libraries. The term was applied to her watertight doors with the journal saying this Madre practically unsinkable. People picked it up and ran with it.

    Correction. “RMS” Actually stands for Royal Mail STEAMER! Royal Navy Vessels are all known as “HMS”. No photography would have been possible from lifeboats of the sinking. It was almost pitch black with No Moon. It would have been impossible to develop a photo in almost total darkness at that time! Most passenger photographs on the Titanic’s decks were actually taken when the ship was docked in Queenstown, in the Irish Republic.

    Extra lifeboats were on order. In fact a gentleman on Ancestry messages me that his great grandfather joined the shipbuilders company just after the Titanic went down and he and another new starter were set to work with paint to over up the Titanic name on the lifeboats.
    I used to have a book written recording the views and memories of ordinary people in England, Ireland and America about the happenings before launch, voyage and after the sinking. The crew only said what they were allowed at the two enquiries and the ordinary people seemed to have not been asked.
    I also saw a bell in the Botany Bay mill building in Chorley engraved with the ship's name. Presumably it missed the boat like the new lifeboats. And yes, I rang the bell, that was in about 1975 I think.

    • @1940limited

      If the Titanic had double the number of lifeboats there wouldn't have been time to launch them. There was no way the ship could be evacuated safety saving all onboard in 90 minutes. The crew barely got 18 of the 20 lifeboats off the ship before it foundered.

    Jack Philips did not cut them off, his response was ok. While during this, he was relating passenger messages through Cape Race, so the Marconi transmitter was turned up to full power. This also meant that his listening earpiece was on max sensitivity. This means that when the Californian sent the message it blasted into his ear very very loud. Next, the Californian didn’t put [MSG] at the start of his message, [MSG] is used when the message is meant to be relayed to the bridge. Lastly, Marconi operators were very informal, shut up shut up I’m busy is a perfectly okay response, and the Californian operator may have chuckled about it after turning off the set. A very minuscule detail often not talked about is that the Californian operator replied “alright” to Philip’s message. Jack Philips is blamed too much for the sinking nowadays.

  • @CrobinHood8BitGuy
    @CrobinHood8BitGuy ปีที่แล้ว

    This ship did not sink fast. I’m fact, Titanic was designed so that if something happened and the unsinkable ship did sink, it would be slowly. For comparison, Titanics sister ship, Britannic, sank after hitting a mine. The ship sank in 55 minutes. The Lusitania, a ship similar in size to the titanic, sank in 18. The Titanic took over 2 hours to sink, the conventional thinking was that if it took longer for the ship to sink, a rescue ship could arrive, and the lifeboats were just precautionary.

    How could a camera in the deep ocean survive all that time everybody knows that water detrimental to photos and then you figure in the ocean deep the camera itself exposed to the elements this is a mighty fishy story

    You state a fact that is untrue. When the watertight doors in the engine room closed, the men (firemen) where not trapped and "left to die". Each watertight compartment had stairwells to upper floors as a way out.

    What actually happened is that the radio operator on duty at the time failed to report the iceberg warning from ships ahead of the Titanic and as a result she was going far too fast to avoid the iceberg when it loomed in front of them! This increase in speed was not Captain Smith's doing but the order of Mr Andrews who as White Star's on board rep had the authority to over rule anyone, including Smith! A disaster that could have been avoided, but because it happened significant changes to the rules made ocean travel much safer!!!!

      Your statement needs correcting! The Captain of Any Boat, Ship or Aircraft has Absolute Authority as the Legal Commander of their craft! And that’s the point, “Legal”. The Captain or Commander is Legally Responsible for the safety of his craft or vessel and All aboard at All Times. No order from Any persons aboard can Legally Overrule the Captain. Not even the owner of the White Star Line, John Bruce Ismay or any other company owner, would have, or have had Any authority over Captain Smith, nor over Any other Captain or Commander! It was just that Captain Smith was retiring after the return voyage and he unfortunately appeared to allow himself to be goaded, or even bullied by Ismay, into maintaining speed to impress his company and Titanic upon the Americans, despite actually being financed by John Pierpoint Morgan, an American!

    Judging by your heading I thought we were going to see photos of people running screaming and dying. I guess I should be used to the deception by now. Anyway getting back to the Titanic that must have been one lame ass crew. From the captain getting his beauty sleep on the maiden voyage which he should have stayed up for since it was the first just to make sure there were no Kinks in their procedure. The person or persons who made the crazy decision about shorting the lifeboats. The crew member in the Crow's Nest without freaking binoculars from what I understood they could have retrieved those binoculars that they wanted to. Then we have the crew member with the rifle pointing at it people and telling them not to get in the boats which as we all know we're never filled to capacity. The gates to the upper decks remaining locked on those poor people. And finally the telegraph operator ignoring distress calls because he was backed up with personal messages for the passengers. If that happened today could you see the protest the size of the lawsuit and the number of people filing them? This tragedy must have started the phrase ignorance is bliss. I could see some of them today even getting jail time. Oh I forgot one more thing the idiot captain giving the order to shut the engines off reverse ship and go around iceberg I think that was the crazy order he gave. This is like the Keystone Cops meets the Titanic. LOL.
