You do know Sonic on the SMS wasn't a port? It was a game in it's on right. You shouldn't have half of the games on the list by that rule then as the majority were Arcade or Japanese computer ports.
Yea... The Game Gear was a portable Master System, That's why the games where so similar. Any of those games that have the same name should have been included. Not like the Game Boy and NES which had night & day difference on every single aspect. Sonic for either vs Castlevania for either... That's all the proof anyone needs.
Mister RON! Well they only pay their script writers $30 a script apparantly, so they probably churn out crap, just to make anything of worth. But indeed, having a reputation for pumping out false facts will only come to harm them later on.
You can see how awesome the graphics were, for its time. The Master System was technically better than the NES. I'm glad "Phantasy Star" made number 1. That's a great game 👍
The Sonic games on Master System were completely different games from their Genesis counterparts, not just ports. And even if you blindly go by name alone, there were still a few Sonic games that didn't have a Genesis "counterpart", so why he didn't make the list at all is honestly beyond me. +john tyler I'm in New Zealand and we got Sonic, Sonic 2, and Sonic Chaos on the Master System. Not saying you're wrong though - there may well have been other Sonic titles that only got a region-specific release.
It's sad that few people, even "gaming experts" (cough), don't often praise SEGA for bringing arcade games home with levels and gameplay intact, despite the to-be-expected graphics difference. Shinobi and Double Dragon are 2 great examples out of many (NES players were forced to accept and defend the single-player, totally NOT arcade levels of Double Dragon).
Rocky, Rambo First Blood part 2, Black Belt, Chop Lifter, The Ninja, Kung Fu Kid, Action Fighter, Ghostbusters, Trans Bot, Great Baseball, Enduro Racer, Rastan, Wonder Boy in Monster Land 2, Double Dragon, After Burner and The Maze. That's what you left out. Just saying
shredtilyurdead black belt had an unlimited lives cheat. There was a point when the screen goes black right before he game started when you hit the reset button 3 times quickly and it gave you unlimited lives. Loved that game!!
Great list! Brings me back. Its crazy how some of the music from those games all come back to you when you hear them again. Dont forget Kenesiden, Golvellius, and Miracle Warriors. Tons of hours as a kid playing those.
One thing that the SMS had over the NES was the colour palette, IMO. So much more vibrant and appealing. Wonder Boy 3 was probably my favourite SMS game back in the day. Alex Kidd wasn't included internally in all master system consoles. Only the latter models included it. The original model included a secret snail maze game, but that was it.
the SMS had many different games that got built in, it all depends witch version you got, if you open your console unit yould notice there are 4 or 5 different "versions" which refer to the different BIOS versions the early units had either a "Please turn off and insert a cartridge" message or snail maze/safari hunt which where SG1000 titles which is a japanese exclusive console BEFORE the master system hence their more primitive graphics. Hang on came after SM/SH and was the V3 bios after that Alex Kidd was the V4 but after '92 units could be found with a V5 bios containing Sonic 1, i have a Mk 1 SMS with a V4 denotion on the mainboard with Alex Kidd built in and a SMS 2 with sonic 1 Different countries my have had different pack in titles *Japan or Brazil* and dont take my words as gospel, reasearch for yourself for more answers
I had a Sega master system and loved it, I knew one other person as a kid who had one. I got a nes but always held the Sega in high regard. I had wonder boy 1&2 but never played 3 and remember getting phantasy star but never really understanding it at 6 or 7 years old.
Sonic 1, Castle of Illusion, Land of Illusion, Asterix are a MUST!!! Populous also got an amazing Master System version. Totally agree with your #1 pick though.
Phantasy Star was fantastic! I loved that game, haven't seen in it years. Great Sega Master System games that didn't make the list (but probably should have) include Choplifter, Alien Syndrome, Battle Out Run, and Double Dragon.
Oh man, I grew up on Sega Master System!!! Would always battle my friends on Sega vs. Nintendo. Man, out of this list the only games I really played were Shinobi and Zillion. Loved those games. Never even heard of half of these other games. Didn't have the patience for Phantasy Star, though I understand why it's #1 or #7... Here are my personal favorite games in no order! -Great Baseball -California Games -Zillion -Shinobi -Astro Warriors -Rastan -Black Belt -Space Harrier
+Teenkitsune It was more popular than the NES here in the UK but I think even the SMS struggled against the C64 or ZX Speccy but games were only a few pound rather than the £39.99 they were asking back in the day
Hamer the Gamer Even so, where I come from, virtually no one knows what a master system is, whereas even my youngest second cousin has heard of the NES. Too bad to, I've played a few Master System games via the Wii Virtual Console and it's a pretty good system.
+Teenkitsune No, you just have to have been a kid in the 1980s. I was a huge and very widely known console.Every kid had either a NES or a Sega Master System. Even more popular when the Sega Master System 2 was released, with the Alex Kidd built in game.
Naughty Monkey I get what you're saying, and I'm not trying to argue. I'm just saying, only those who grew up with it or who are in the know actually know what a Master System is, today those who didn't grow up with it, most of them don't know this amazing system existed, but everyone knows what an NES is, even those born in 2002 know because of the cultural influence. Again, not trying to devalue the Master System as it was great, and I'm not trying to argue either. I'm just saying, as far as the current times goes, the Master System is virtually unknown, the Genesis/Mega Drive and the Dreamcast are SEGA's most well known consoles, nearly anyone can say they know what those are, but like the Saturn the Master System is known only to those who either owned/played it or those who are in the know.
obzcure To be honest, the first time I watched it, I did so without sound. After listening to the dialog, I'm trying to figure out what drugs he was smoking when he recorded this, lol
I agree with a few on this list, but definitely missing: Govellius Ghostbusters Shooting Gallery Snail Game (no love for this hidden easter egg) Black Belt I would have placed Ys MUCH higher on the list. On a final note, I loved one aspect of the SMS. If you did it right, you could pull out cartridges midgame, and play the game corrupted. Zillion was fun for that - walk through walls, play rooms with surface textures, etc...
Phantasy Star was the greatest RPG that set standards for future games. I enjoyed this game and still play it on emulator consoles. It's highly addictive and just an awesome game.
Peguin Land is a puzxle game with a unique concept and deserves more than an honorable mention. Most puzzle games are the same these days , match the colors Nintendo recently came out with a game where you can create your own Mario levels , You could do that on penguin land almost 30 years ago, Also Rastan, Thunder Blade, Alex Kidd in Shinobi World and Hang On should have made the list
Loved my Master system , Wonderboy 2 and 3. And great games like Black belt , Bank panic, Enduro racer ,European club soccer which made your thumbs hurt playing it and so many more
Masters of Combat, an awesome Street Fighter clone. Golden Axe Warrior, like Zelda but better (aside from the music). Castle of Illusion, better than Genesis/Megadrive version IMO.
Stopped watching after "no ports so no Sonic". The Master System Sonics aren't ports, they're entirely different games from the Mega Drive/Genesis titles. Then you start 10 with Fantasy Zone when, by the logic that excluded Sonic, the 16 bit Super Fantasy Zone should make Fantasy Zone ineligible. You just don't know your subject matter at all, do you?
+SJ Webster A "port" of a game is where you take a game from one system, and put it to another. Sonic the Hedgehog was a Sega Genesis game, and was ported to the SMS (and soon after Game Gear) to gain more support for the system (and broaden appeal). Fantasy Zone STARTED on the SMS, and Super Fantasy Zone was a port to the Genesis. Sorry, but no comparison. My fave top SMS games (in order): Phantasy Star, R-type, Fantasy Zone, Golvellius, and Shinobi. The others well... not so much (yes, I have played Wonderboy III, and got stuck, so no I didn't like it).
+Shilar Sonic on Mega Drive and Sonic on Master System are totally different. They only share the same name and characters. That's like saying Sega ported the original Sonic to the XBox360 and it's called Sonic the Hedgehog 2006. Same title, two different games.
+P Ferreira of course there are differences. There are differences between Mario 2 on the NES, SNES, and game boy advance, but they all are considered ports.
Shilar I mean a totally different game. I'm not talking Mario 2 on Nes and Mario 2 on Super Mario All-Stars. I mean they're entirely different games with the same name. The only port the SMS version had was for the Game Gear. Same goes for the sequels like Sonic Chaos.
My top games. Time soldiers, Ninja, Lord of the sword, Incredible Hulk, Spiderman ROTSS, Zillion, Maze hunter 3d Gslaxy force, Thunder Blade, Space harrier, Aztec Adventure and global defense.
didn't have such a big collection, and I was very little at the time. I remember the Rambo game to be pretty good. And Space Harrier was another arcade port, but I remember having a lot of fun with that game. Remember the music too.
Golden Axe Warrior, Golvelius Valley of Doom, Spellcaster, Master of Darkness, Aztec Adventure, Kenseiden and Lord of The Sword were some of my favorites.
I grew up with a Master System. It completely blitzed the NES in sales in Australia and Brazil (random I know). Wonderboy 3 is a fantastic Metroidvania type game and probably my favorite from those days. Highly recommended
I felt like I was going rogue buying a used Sega MS during the Nintendo-era (I had an NES also). Buying it used, it came with a bunch of the previous owner's games, including Phantasy Star. The amazing thing was, they had left pages and pages of hand-drawn maps, notes and things they had observed. I played it through without using them so that I could have the challenge, but it was a huge treasure to get ownership of that person's hard work. The maps were incredible, in DnD style on graph paper with notes, and their notes were intricate to say the least. So...cool. Sadly when I went into the Marines my mom got rid of a bunch of that stuff when I was away. I wish I still had them or even track down who had done all of that. Must have been 1987 or 88, Powerplay in Aurora, Colorado.
I had a pawn shop Sega master system with about 10 games that my dad got us in the later 80s. For some reason though, they got rid of it and we got an new NES and while NES was 100x more popular with a whole lot more games, it paled in comparison against the SMS as far as quality. I liked the hell out of that thing
I unlocked Opa-Opa in Sonic And SEGA All Stars Racing and now I’m interested in Fantasy Zone since it looks like an interesting game. There’s also an arcade version of the game
I love Asterix, Wimblendon, Double Dragon, Wonder Boy III, Land of Illusion, Crash Dummies, Ultimate Soccer, Putt Putter, Streets of Rage, Sonic Chaos and Bubble Bobble... fantastic years
I have always considered the Master System to be one of the great, criminally underrated game systems. Apart from the games shown here, some other great games for the SMS that are definitely worth playing, if you can get a hold of them: Sonic The Hedgehog The Terminator Golden Axe Golden Axe Warrior Space Harrier After Burner Double Dragon Back To The Future ll Star Wars Predator 2
I remember getting this system for Christmas when I was young. One of the best Christmas ever. I realize now just how long my mom had to save to get me it. It was a lot of money back then as the Xbox1 is now. I miss the 80's. Turning 45 years old sux.
I had one of these rather than the NES and loved it....some of my favorites were Phantasy Star at #1, but also ESwat, Double Dragon, Shinobi (which was actually better than the NES Port), Alien Syndrome, and Cyborg Hunter. Rambo 3 was also a great gun shooter as well.
Master Of Darkness should have had an honorable mention and yes i'm aware it was a PAL release only being released in Europe but we did however get a NTSC release for the Game Gear in 1993
Thank you for remembering the Master System, this system really needs more love. However I am surprised you didn't consider Sonic 2 since it was NOT a port. It was a prequel and in between game between Genesis 1 and 2, and also is features the origin and first appearance of Tails.
Phantasy Star being at the top definitely makes sense. That games wicked hard though. That and Wonder Boy 3... the Master System had some of the toughest old-school games I think I've played. Wonder Boy in Monster Land is probably one of the most difficult games from that era I've beaten.
Psyched to see Ys: The vanished omens on this list! My favorite all time game as a kid! I didn't know it was popular. My other favorite SMS games were Outrun, Afterburner, Double Dragon, and Phantasy Star.
Why would you show so much more of the Arcade version of Operation Wolf instead of the Master System? I know it looks and sounds better, but it's not the point of this video, right?
Golden Axe Warrior is missing, as Golvelius :-) But in my heart, at least a top 20 would be needed for the Master System! Too much nostalgia from my childwood ^^
Rocky was easy if you had auto-fire on your controller, to make the most of the inter-match training sessions, thus maximizing your power during the fights.
@@TripleRp Monster land is amazing BUT way too difficult especially with the dumb time limit AND the maze at the end. It just ruins the experience. I have played it countless times since my childhood and only managed to get to the endboss once. I died of course. Have you beaten it? Wonderboy 3 is much better in my opinion. Perfectly balanced with a great learning curve and lots of neat exploring. On a side note; some underrated Sega Master System games: Rastan, Alien 3 (AMAZING game! creepy and fun game with tons of action and great music), Master of Darkness and Jurassic Park just to name a few
Penguin Land made the honorable mention, woo hoo! I remember it being the first game I ever owned that actually had a battery back up. That and Monopoly also.
Wonder Boy 3. All those Saturday afternoons playing out with my mates, then coming home to play WB3 while the smell of cooking chicken drifted upstairs from the kitchen. Simple pleasures, before the world got too complicated.
Operation Wolf was a classic. Was great playing it when I was a kid. Alex Kidd I remember playing on my brothers Master System as well as it was the inbuilt game in the console :)
Ten games worth mentioning. :) 1.Phantasy Star, 2. R-Type. 3 Alex Kidd, 4. Space Harrier, 5. Out Run, 6. Castle of Illusions, 7. Choplifter, 8. Black Belt, 9. Kenseiden, 10. Spellcaster. Truth is Sega was better than Nintendo. Unfortunately, Nintendo's attempt to monopolize the industry kept Sega from reaching the forefront.
I remember my parents buying me Psycho Fox with my Master System one Christmas. I'd never heard of it but it ended up being one of my favourite Master System games.
Your knowledge of the Sega Master System is poor; Sonic 1 and 2 were not 'ports', they were different games in their own right from the Genesis versions (Sonic Chaos also didn't even have a Genesis version!). Alex Kidd also wasn't "included in all master systems", it was built into *some* Master System 2 consoles (Sonic 1 was the other game). The first Master System model had different games built into it, such as Hang On and Safari Hunt. Anyway, this is my list: 1. Micky Mouse: Land of Illusion 2. Transbot 3. Alex Kidd in Miracle World 4. Asterix 5. Lemmings 6. Alladin 7. Shinobi 8. Sonic Chaos 9. Bubble Bobble 10. Bonanza Bros
Kind of a hit and miss list. I'd say that the "Land of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse" is pretty much a must have on this list that you didn't include...and it wasn't a port. I'd also say maybe consider Asterix and Golden Axe Warrior.
Sega Master System had such great graphics for its time. 5:13 Also, it was able to handle FM sounds (unless it's another version of the game on another system)? That's impressive!
The Sonic games on the Master System are not Mega Drive ports they are separate games featuring the same character. Hence why Sonic 2 for MS came out before Sonic 2 for MD, and Sonic Chaos for MS came out before Sonic 3 on MD.
Two of my favorite SMS games..Phantasy Star (STILL AMAZING!!!) and Super Wonder Boy in Super Monster Land. Not sure if that was ported backwards to the SMS or forwards to the Genesis, but I LOVED that game.
"number 7 Fantasy Star"
close enough
+SilverVeil well 7+7=14...-13=1
I guess that`s the correct answer :)
Георги Колев unicorns don't have wings, I don't have wings, therefore I am a unicorn.
I guess you're right lol
+SilverVeil Last minute change to the order I guess. Wonder what the initial "Number 1" was.
+SilverVeil My guess is he was just reading from a handwritten list and the 1 looked a bit like a 7.
+Dan Paradis it's ok Dan, you're the fan favorite for us anyways, we'll just get our pitchforks and reprimand the editors.
You do know Sonic on the SMS wasn't a port? It was a game in it's on right.
You shouldn't have half of the games on the list by that rule then as the majority were Arcade or Japanese computer ports.
The trouble with this channel is that it's usually rushed with a serious lack of research. No real love for what they do.
Yea... The Game Gear was a portable Master System, That's why the games where so similar. Any of those games that have the same name should have been included. Not like the Game Boy and NES which had night & day difference on every single aspect. Sonic for either vs Castlevania for either... That's all the proof anyone needs.

Didn't Sonic on SMS predate the Genesis game by a few months? 😅
My first console, good times.
my 1st too
+lordnevetsz Same here
+lordnevetsz My first too.
+lordnevetsz My parents bought an Atari 2600 before I was born, so I played that first, but SMS was the first they bought after I was born.
What's up, Otis?
Love how the guy said #7 instead of #1
I think it might be WatchMojo's version of Engrish.
Like 5:10 'A Few Physical Strength Left'.
I just don't get it
Was just wondering if anyone else has picked up on it
Poorly researched, cheaply made by ripping off TH-cam footage, no QC. What can you expect?
To be fair; in Canada seven means one. For this reason alone, Canadians refer to the numeral one in the states as the "Canadian seven."
Sonic Chaos would have been a great entry.
On another note, props for pronouncing Ys correctly.
HHog its completely different to the genesis version. It's not a port. It should be on the list. Bloody ridiculous
HHog yep true
HHog they put sonic the hedgehog on me so I won’t be left out
*The idiots here don’t know that.*
It shows a lack of research to say that Sonic couldn't appear on the list due to imported Genesis titles being excluded. The SMS Sonic titles are NOT imports of Genesis titles at all, but completely different games. Come on now, guys. You can do better.
+cutejoshie I've been told that Sonic on the Master System was only released in Brazil though.
+john tyler I'm in New Zealand and we got Sonic, Sonic 2, and Sonic Chaos on the Master System. Not saying you're wrong though - there may well have been other Sonic titles that only got a region-specific release.
Amaritudine Well I heard it from a video on youtube so it's not exactly reliable information haha.
+john tyler sonic 1 was actually the last game released in North America for the SMS.
cutejoshie Really? Is there any reason as to why that is?
"The Ninja" rarely gets any love but honestly one of my favourite all time games
Black belt was fun too.
Yes that was a great one. Same with Gangster Town and Double Hawk.
@@Jimmerz75 yup. I consider both to be essential titles.
Don't forget Afterburner, Outrun, Hang On, Double Dragon, Zaxxon...etc..
sms was underrated, the graphics were way better than nes and you never had a problem getting a game to work

Corey hey I like the nes, but some of the games on the SMS had pretty good graphics, better than nes graybox.
Just saying
Choplifter is a really good call!
Dude, Rocky for SMS was one of the worst games I've ever played. The graphics were okay, but the game play was freakin' horrible. :\
i beat rocky on sms . fuckn epic. i really liked black belt and the ninja too. but was unfortunately not able to finish those
shredtilyurdead black belt had an unlimited lives cheat. There was a point when the screen goes black right before he game started when you hit the reset button 3 times quickly and it gave you unlimited lives. Loved that game!!

number seven?? lol
+Puerta al Sótano Seven and One both have an N and an E in them so they are basically the same
me 2 hahaha
What!!! No Double Dragon!?!?!?!
Exactly!!!
It was in there at the end briefly
Double Dragon for the SMS wasn't fun. The hit mechanics and animations were clunky.
That game was dope, one of my favorites
One thing that the SMS had over the NES was the colour palette, IMO. So much more vibrant and appealing.
Wonder Boy 3 was probably my favourite SMS game back in the day. I think Power Strike is worthy of being on this list, it remains one of my favourite vertical scrolling shooters from the 8/16 bit days.
That dungeon part of phantasy star blew me the hell away the fact that it was released in 1987 and actually kinda impresses me than the nes
Sonic 2 for the Sega Master System was released a full month prior to its Mega Drive counterpart, so aside from the fact that it is a totally unique game, how on earth could it be considered a MD port?
Facts
the Sonic game on Master System really isn't a port as it has different levels
+M3TR01DFANBOY That's what I thought. It only shares two of the levels, most of it is a totally different game. Even green hill is designed different. In other words, it deserves to be on this list.
+Deric Torres (TPGR) The original Sonic shares 3 levels with the Mega Drive/Genesis version. Green Hill, Labyrinth, and Scrap Brain
+Katzman 79 It does share the original names from the Genesis version but for the MegaDrive version, the levels was totally different especially Green Hill Zone which suppose to be a easy level to complete and Labyrinth and Scrap Brain Zone was a nail in the coffin in terms of how hard it is on the MegaDrive version.
+Katzman 79 My bad I got MegaSystem and MegaDrive mixed up. LOL
+Katzman 79 It shares zone names and in some cases, music. The levels themselves are nothing alike.
Astro Warrior. Outrun. Aztec Adventure. Thunder Blade. Rastan. Altered Beast.
Sonic is a new, different Sonic game, NOT a port, and should ABSOLUTELY be on the list, aling with various Mickey Mouse, Daffy Duck, and Donald Duck games.
SMS always needs love. Great list! Zillion needs an update.

No mention of Golden Axe Warrior. Easily one of the most underrated and underappreciated games ever!
A much better game than the first Zelda.
Fun fact: Psycho Fox is the spiritual predecessor to Decap Attack on the Genesis
And also Magical Hat on the Genesis
Decap attack was a redesigned reskin of a Japanese game called magical flying hat turbo adventure. Yes, they both were very similar to psycho fox. 👌
Alex Kidd wasn't included internally in all master system consoles. Only the latter models included it. The original model included a secret snail maze game, but that was it.
Mine had hang on built in to it.
mine came with hang on and safari hunt and built in maze craze, I bought my Alex kidd

+CornishCreamtea07 What's missing from games these days? A Dogmatix bonus stage, that's what.
+CornishCreamtea07 yea that was a classic SMS game, it had a great soundtrack too, surely worthy of top 10.
+CornishCreamtea07 great game but it got so hard towards the end that took decades before I finished it
Yeah I remember that, never beat it but it was fun. Vague memories of the snes version too.
+CornishCreamtea07 Amazing game!
Sonic 1, Castle of Illusion, Land of Illusion, Asterix are a MUST!!! Populous also got an amazing Master System version.
Totally agree with your #1 pick though.
I agree! R-type and Operation Wolf!? And Land of Illusion or Asterix not in the list. Such a terrible list.
Phantasy Star was fantastic! I loved that game, haven't seen in it years. Great Sega Master System games that didn't make the list (but probably should have) include Choplifter, Alien Syndrome, Battle Out Run, and Double Dragon.
It always amazes me how superior the Master System was to the NES. If only it had got there first.
Stay off the crack homie
For sure
"Number 7 ... Phantasy Star" WAIT, NUMBER 7 ???!!!! ... It's number 1 man, NUMBER 1
-Great Baseball
-California Games
-Zillion
-Shinobi
-Astro Warriors
-Rastan
-Black Belt
-Space Harrier
What sucks is that, like the Saturn, the Master System is a relatively unknown console, you have to be in the know to know what this nice system is.
To me, i think its cool how the SMS is kinda the underground NES. I live in Florida and never saw/played one, so for me its a cool new experience.
I loved 'Phantasy Star', but for me 'Wonderboy in Monsterland' was the Master System's best game.
wow the memories!!! I still have the master system and all other Segas that followed. Love Phantasy Star, Alex Kidd in Miracle World, R-Type and Y's
Surprised Master of Darkness isn't on this list. That game was fantastic.
Wonder how many people are commenting about #1 being #7. LOL and yes I know, I'm doing it to. Awesome list though.
the first thing I did when I heard was come down to the comments to see all the complants
+Ryan Amberger Phantasy Star was number 7? I must have watched it wrong.
+fflover250 guess so
obzcure
To be honest, the first time I watched it, I did so without sound. After listening to the dialog, I'm trying to figure out what drugs he was smoking when he recorded this, lol
+Ryan Amberger Yeah I am use to watchmojo making mistakes so I had to play it back 3 times
Asterix is also awesome. It deserves at least an "honourable mention"
I remember playing Rambo First Blood: part 2 on the Master System for hours on end as a kid.
I agree with a few on this list, but definitely missing:
Govellius
Ghostbusters
Shooting Gallery
Snail Game (no love for this hidden easter egg)
Black Belt
I would have placed Ys MUCH higher on the list.
On a final note, I loved one aspect of the SMS. If you did it right, you could pull out cartridges midgame, and play the game corrupted. Zillion was fun for that - walk through walls, play rooms with surface textures, etc...
Penguin Land was really fun, and had the internal battery so you could save your game. Glad they mentioned Zillion, I loved that one!
Phantasy Star was the greatest RPG that set standards for future games. I enjoyed this game and still play it on emulator consoles. It's highly addictive and just an awesome game.
Hey Watchmojo, did you know that Sonic the Hedgehog for the Master System was a different game, and not a port from the Genesis?
Of course they don’t know this. And Castle of Illusion too.
Personally, the fact that Fantasy Zone was mentioned in the Top 10 list makes this a decent enough list seen as they could only choose ten games.
Talk about a hit right in the feels. I remember playing the crap out of Shinobi every day after school. It was the best game on the console IMO.
+Tempes68 I have it on ps3
agreed
One of my favorite systems. Very underrated system.
Sega Master System Graphics > Nintendo Entertainment System = Mind Blown.
depends on the game
Peguin Land is a puzxle game with a unique concept and deserves more than an honorable mention. Most puzzle games are the same these days , match the colors
Nintendo recently came out with a game where you can create your own Mario levels , You could do that on penguin land almost 30 years ago,
Also Rastan, Thunder Blade, Alex Kidd in Shinobi World and Hang On should have made the list
The Sega Master System truly was a powerful system.
Finally a good list. My faith in WatchMojo has been restored.
+SJ Webster "You just don't know your subject matter at all, do you?" It seems they don't know much about films or TV either judging by their lists.
So, where's space harrier?
Maybe it's not in his top 10.
didn't have such a big collection, and I was very little at the time.
I love Asterix, Wimblendon, Double Dragon, Wonder Boy III, Land of Illusion, Crash Dummies, Ultimate Soccer, Putt Putter, Streets of Rage, Sonic Chaos and Bubble Bobble... fantastic years
The sonic games aren’t ports, they may have similar zones but there pretty much their own games
I have always considered the Master System to be one of the great, criminally underrated game systems. Apart from the games shown here, some other great games for the SMS that are definitely worth playing, if you can get a hold of them:
Sonic The Hedgehog
The Terminator
Golden Axe
Golden Axe Warrior
Space Harrier
After Burner
Double Dragon
Back To The Future ll
Star Wars
Predator 2
I remember getting this system for Christmas when I was young. One of the best Christmas ever. I realize now just how long my mom had to save to get me it. It was a lot of money back then as the Xbox1 is now. I miss the 80's. Turning 45 years old sux.
I had one of these rather than the NES and loved it....some of my favorites were Phantasy Star at #1, but also ESwat, Double Dragon, Shinobi (which was actually better than the NES Port), Alien Syndrome, and Cyborg Hunter. Rambo 3 was also a great gun shooter as well.
+Shaw Dawg I thought Cyborg Hunter was really cool.
Phantasy Star 1 was my most favorite Sega Master System game. Especially since it was basically my intro JRPGs in general.
Phantasy Star being at the top definitely makes sense. That games wicked hard though. That and Wonder Boy 3... the Master System had some of the toughest old-school games I think I've played. Wonder Boy in Monster Land is probably one of the most difficult games from that era I've beaten.
It's ahead of its time
The dungeon part is mind-blowing at the time
Gain Ground was always my fav game to play growing up. fantastic 2p game to play even now-a-days!
Psyched to see Ys: The vanished omens on this list! My favorite all time game as a kid! I didn't know it was popular. My other favorite SMS games were Outrun, Afterburner, Double Dragon, and Phantasy Star.
All my friends had Nintendos. Naturally, I wanted a Sega Master System. The games just felt so much more mature and advanced to me.
Wonder Boy in Monster Island. Rambo. Rocky. Miracle Warriors. Kenseiden. Ninja...Yeah you forgot those.
Wonder Boy in Monster Land may be my favorite. I had Rocky, Drago was was ridiculous.
Rocky was easy if you had auto-fire on your controller, to make the most of the inter-match training sessions, thus maximizing your power during the fights.
VB3 actually dragon's trap was way better than monster island
Kenseiden! Probably still my favourite.
On a side note; some underrated Sega Master System games: Rastan, Alien 3 (AMAZING game! creepy and fun game with tons of action and great music), Master of Darkness and Jurassic Park just to name a few
so many great games on the master system. really under rated
I think that one of the best titles in the SMS is "Kenseiden"... one of the forgotten treasures of the SEGA Master System catalog.
Much props for including Zillion, my personal favorite SMS game. I feel it's often forgotten.
WHERE'S ACTION FIGHTER? :'( Super-hard without a cheat but super fun!
Penguin Land made the honorable mention, woo hoo! I remember it being the first game I ever owned that actually had a battery back up. That and Monopoly also.
Very good. But it is missing "BLACK BELT"
Wonder Boy 3. All those Saturday afternoons playing out with my mates, then coming home to play WB3 while the smell of cooking chicken drifted upstairs from the kitchen. Simple pleasures, before the world got too complicated.
The description xD 'Before they was SEEGGAAAA... they were this BEEEP BOOOP.
Now: SEGA (Saay-guh) Before: BEEPBOOP (Beep-book)
+Kazuto Kirigaya Before there was WatchMojo...good times...
Anyway, this is my list:
1. Micky Mouse: Land of Illusion
2. Transbot
3. Alex Kidd in Miracle World
4. Asterix
5. Lemmings
6. Alladin
7. Shinobi
8. Sonic Chaos
9. Bubble Bobble
10. Bonanza Bros
You know Kidd is his surname right? There is no “the”.
من فضلك اخي كيف يمكنني أن احمل لعبةSEGA
Kind of a hit and miss list. I'd say that the "Land of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse" is pretty much a must have on this list that you didn't include...and it wasn't a port. I'd also say maybe consider Asterix and Golden Axe Warrior.
really good list. I'd only make a few changes. well done. Fantasy Zone 2 and wonderboy in monster land would have been on my top 10 list
Sega Master System had such great graphics for its time.
5:13 Also, it was able to handle FM sounds (unless it's another version of the game on another system)? That's impressive!
After Burner? not even an honorable mention?
The Sonic games on the Master System are not Mega Drive ports they are separate games featuring the same character. Hence why Sonic 2 for MS came out before Sonic 2 for MD, and Sonic Chaos for MS came out before Sonic 3 on MD.
Two of my favorite SMS games..Phantasy Star (STILL AMAZING!!!) and Super Wonder Boy in Super Monster Land. Not sure if that was ported backwards to the SMS or forwards to the Genesis, but I LOVED that game.
Highly underrated.
Alex kid was not built in to all master systems.. Mine had hang-on and Safari hunt along with the snail game built into it.
snail game rocked
Mine too.
*Master System 2 actually*
Yes! so glad you finally did a list for this great console which seems to be forgotten these days.
Where is Kenseiden and Black Belt?
Kenseiden is fantastic! I loved that feudal Japanese atmosphere created by the graphics, really impressive for the time.
Kung fu Kid is better than Black Belt
I love Kenseiden and I played it to the end. I want more Kenseiden games :)
DUDE Kenseiden Black Belt The Ninja I feel you even My Hero
Teddy Boy would still be playable today. It never gets mentioned 😑. It's a clever trippy game.
Enduro Racer FOREVER!!!
Ohhhhh I forgot about that one. A bit on the easy side, but It was new and different...
Psycho fox best game of my childhood. Now i m 40 years old, and take controller to play!
