As a C&O canal local, a couple of thoughts... DONT drink the canal water regardless of how you treat it. It's basically swamp water and very stagnate. I don't even eat fish I catch out of there. I would be very cautious of camping next to the river. The sites next to the canal are largely safe but the river can rise very quickly if there is a flash storm upstream.
@@nlsantiesteban Awesome to hear! I hadn't heard of the MoCo route and looked it up. I think a hard tail would be the ideal bike. I'm a HUGE fan of hard tails...simple, reliable, lightweight, and efficient. I might have to give that route a try myself...let me know how it goes!
I biked the C and O Canal towpath 4-8 times. Backpacked that trail Harpers Ferry to Cumberland section 5 times. It is a old National Park and will be a section of Great American Rail Trail.
@@loamseeker5230 Thanks. That's about the time I plan to do it (but in reverse starting in Pittsburgh). Fingers crossed I get good weather like you had.
Paul After a 50lb weight loss I want to maintain a healthy lifestyle. I’m really working towards Hancock to Georgetown by next spring. You are brave to cycle in June. Fall / Spring😍. Yes Potomac grill they have the best gyro w/ crinkle fries. Lol
COVID messed up my grand plans but I did the GAP from Pittsburgh right before July 4. It was warm but not humid. My family picked me up after Day 1 in Ohiopyle, we stayed at a hotel, and the next day I finished in Cumberland.
Now I live near Point of Rocks and have finished DC to Harper's Ferry. I'm trying to convince my wife to drive me to Cumberland and drop me off so I can finish the rest of the route.
The NPS rangers catch people camping on NPS property near Harpers Ferry often. They usually let them go with no ticket. I camped at Huckleberry Hill the campsite on the C and O Canal which can get crowded.
Great, clear video
Starting the GAP trail and the C&O Towpath next month! Sept. 2021
Awesome! Have a blast!
Unfortunately, Whites ferry is now closed. Of course the Canal Trail is still open though.
Oh that's a shame.
Clara Barton Highway...

Great footage! Thx for sharing!
Crazy, I grew up biking and walking the C&O but I rarely went further north than Great Falls. Now I work for the NPS and I never ride the C&O.
Well, what are you waiting for? Get out there and give it a try!
@@loamseeker5230 I will. I intend on doing the MoCo bikepacking trip. Do you think I'll be fine with a hard tail? Some of it is on the C&O.

@@loamseeker5230 will do. I'm heading up to Baltimore to get a new bike....they're sold out everywhere in NoVa and DC.
This is a thorough and informative video and narration. Thank you.
Thank you, that was the goal...glad to find that someone found it useful! :)
Great video, like getting trail info instead of music
Music has its purpose, but I agree that it can be overdone. One of my favorite sounds is gravel crunching under tires.
@@loamseeker5230 I prefer the sounds of nature with some narration from the person of whats going on
YES! Why do people put TOO LOUD music in their vids? It's like a You Tube disease!
Maybe I will bring my Sawyer squeeze filter.
Dude had to comment. Love the straight fist out forward. Awesome dude!.

How bad is it on 28 mm tires
Depends how much it rained in the last 2 days. Miles of puddles after a hard rain.
Nice one !
How many miles from Arlington National Cemetary to Lincoln Memorial?
All you have to do is cross Arlington Memorial Bridge and then an extra .25 miles or so!
The big wall right before great falls that you showed always makes me nervous, cuz there's nothing blocking you from falling off
That was the Maryland Side you were on when you stated Virginia Side.
I ate some Potomac river water ramen noodles, and had Casselman river water tea. Just give it a good boil.
This is near the top of my "to ride" list.
I totally recommend it!
What time of year did you do this trip?
This trip was done on 21-23 June

I biked and hiked sections in the 70s . Before you were born
Not every spigot or well will work and be on.
Do people not filter the spicket water?
Nice.
Too much face time. Rather see what is ahead and beside you.
