Loved this show and The Color of Money Black Banks and the Racial Wealth Gap opened my eyes to just how deeply entrenched white supremacy has been in this country. Many of us not being in the right place or having a certain amount of access would never be aware of the vampirism taking place within our community.
I am so thankful for Mehrsa Baradaran and her presentation today. As a Jamaican 🇯🇲 Immigrant who could not ever visibly pass for white, when I was doing well academically in College, I could see I was being invited to white circles and people even making comments that I am not black (which I loudly corrected (I am a descendant of Marons) ). This expanding white Construct is so true! Also the lie of how black people are taught to gain wealth. Karen thank you again for waking up my mind, thank you again for bringing the necessary conversation on the air. Thank you
I loved this guest. I am encouraged by her level of cultural and political awareness, and also to read the book !!! Thank you again, Ms. Hunter, for everything you provide from this platform.
You've done it again. This particular segment should be required listening for every black person in America whether they to hear it or not. I didn't discover you until this year. At 52 years old I am rapidly evolving to how I'm going to handle my resources point forward.
quote of the day, improvised --> "You can gain power within the structure by working against your people. You will be rewarded. There is wealth in that market." that hurts.
Omg, right after her interview I bought the book on Audible. It's absolutely mindblowing! It puts all the pieces together regarding black banking and why the struggle was sooo real. Her dive into the history of banking shows how it was completely interlocked with the Federal government (i.e. FHA, Fannie Mae, legistators) just locking black folks out from buying homes, allowing black banks to flourish, etc. Its just so hurtful, but the truth must be told. I had to bookmark so much that I will revisit this book many more times. Thanks Karen & Mehsra.❤
You should read dr. Claud Anderson Book black labor white wealth he's been around more than 30 years and still talking about this this very day she is just reiterating what he's already done the work on probably nice different Klein of work but this is the same thing that's not the claw on Addison has already done and he's foundational black American.
Excellent conversation and information as always. Thank you Karen 💯 It is just unbelievable how evil some people can be. My Great Grandfather and Grandmother were sharecroppers and were cheated really badly according to my Grandmother. They barely survived except for the grace of God. My Grandfather left the state of Georgia because of it. As for "white expansion" and it's evolution, it seems quite apparent that the United States is adopting the South African apartheid model which was Whites, mixed or colored, and then Blacks. This was their racial/racist hierarchy during apartheid and it of course affected every area of life. It has been very noticeable how prevalent the many ads of mixed couples are continuously featured in commercials, movies, newspapers, etc. especially when it comes to BM and WW. These images are easily outpacing those of BM and BW and always show loving, positive interaction between them as opposed to the often times "snappiness" or "surly tone" between BM and BW that are portrayed. The vast reduction of imagery and/or exclusion of healthy BM/BW relationships being promoted or highlighted is very, very concerning. Think about the offspring that are produced from both types of unions and envision the possible plan at hand.
@Mahera Biz SIGH! perhaps you do. I'm here yo deliver food and facts...and I don't really care what package it comes in...and who is this message for? Because I know most of this already. Wow....what a great segment, as a black woman who has recently been given the 👍🏽 from multiple lenders this was EVERYTHING!!!!! Another issue we as black women, in particular, have with ownership is that we feel like we need to be exponentially more prepared to do it where other people just GO! We are scared to spend our money (that we’ve worked sooooo hard to save) even when it’s for the purpose of MAKING money. That is what I am working towards now, if lenders are like Pick Me (you’re a dream candidate) then why do I STILL feel like I’m not ready???? The system working is why...400+yrs of anti-blackness being told you won’t make it, you aren’t smart enough, you’ll get ‘taken’ is why I’m scared. Even my financial counselor said “we should hire you to teach others you’ve done so well at learning all this on your own”. And I still feel I’m not ready...but I have to move passed my fear and KNOW I am ready. Thank you for this segment...it really made me see that I DO have it & will do it!
Please go ahead and do it. You sound very intelligent and confident. I too struggled with insecurities and for years hesitated about starting a business, etc. by the way I am very creative but lacked confidence. Anyway, last year at age 56 my employment was terminated. It was a sense of relief as I struggling with job satisfaction, etc. Two months later I started a business and never looked back!
