Great video, especially for us in the rust belt areas like Southern Ontario. Most folks don't know what we have to deal with trying to disassemble rusted out fasteners. I'm heading out to replace my rad on an Mk4 Golf TDI. With your help, I know it's doable this afternoon.
I did this job this weekend, took more time than I thought... you do not have to take the wheels off I also found that it was so much easier to install the new radiator by bolting it in without the fan assembly / shroud attached.
It’s a big job just for a rad..

Make that seven . I'm just about to replace the rad on my ' 99 1.9 TDI . The rad's the same one that was on it when I bought it in 02 . If a visitor hadn't shunted it while parking I reckon it would still be alright . . . Great vid , thanks .

Great video. Very helpful and concise. This was quite a process and I ended up having to cut some of the torx bolts because they were so badly corroded and just stripped out. I recommend anyone doing this to soak all of these torx bolts in PB Blaster overnight. The bumper cover retaining bolts and fan shroud screws were the worst.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge. It was very helpful. But I didn't need to remove wheels all you have to do is to Jack it up and fully turn your wheels left . Stubby screwdriver will do . Another think . Because I don't have ac so I had lots of room to work . I didn't have to remove plastic frame under metal bumper . I just bent it a bit to remove rad . I removed lights but possably didn't have to . All went smoothly. But i snapped bit of plastic on plug for temp sensor as you mentioned in vid 😂 Thanks again 👍. Saved myself few pounds.

i got it done i also replaced the rad fans cuz mine were making noise and were shot. its worth having a part car comes in handy not having to buy to many parts @@OvensGarage

Adding the wrong coolant can also cause leaks. Learned that the hard way.
Great video and to the point quick. Maybe a little longer wider angle shots and to not use the term "rad" in place of radiator. Kinda got annoying. Besides that awesome work.

Even on cars that don't show signs of rust, use two-by-fours in conjunction with jack stands on the jacking points to spread the weight out.
Yep , I don't know if this is wrong or not but I've always jacked on the sub frame mounting points . Went to use the jacking point when I first got the car (decades ago) and really didn't like the cracking sounds .Figured those were seals cracking and stopped . . .Nothings dropped off yet ..
The best video for replacing the radiator, I have a MK 4 2.3 V5, are these instructions steps the same for my model?

Great video fellas. A big help. Question? No need to disconnect the hose for the AC condenser right? I was told have to discharge the AC before disconnecting it and recharge it again? Thanks in advanced for the reply.
It looks like you had to disconnect the AC radiator. In Europe/UK that's illegal without degassing it safely first which needs workshop equipment. I presume you didn't, but you did mention unscrewing the AC connection. Can you explain? Otherwise super clear vid, thanks.
Didn't have to do that no. No venting or re-charging of the AC required.

You don't need to take off the wheels, but yes, it makes it a little better to access the rest
Did you need to buy any accessories for this project? Ie. New radiator mounts or seals/o-rings of any kind? It looks like a pretty straight forward project, just tedious due to there being a lot to remove and disconnect. Thanks for the video!

You have to clean the o ring that's in the hose connecter with the valve to drain the coolant. The one with the metal thing you have to push up on

You dont need to take all that stuff off just to change the rad. You can keep the metal bumper on the rad frame.

Can you tell me what bolts actually hold the lower part of the front panel in place?
I see the top mounting bolts but all the other bolts were to secure the radiator assy to the fibre front panel. Is it only secured by those two top bolts and the bumper iron bolting across it?
Looks good from the outside, but man that thing is a crusty mess underneath.

thank you very much for the video, very helpful but will be good if you show the procedure how fill Radiator correctly, as I know some time faced problem with no circulation of water in the engine. Reason of non circulation of water is a not removed air from the cooling system during filling.
Fill it run the engine and then check again after you fill it incase there was air in the system

radiator removal on my '83 E30: open hood, pull off hoses, separate fan shroud from radiator (two clips at the top), take out one bolt at the top of the radiator and pull it out, 10 minute job max, different times...

Hi Tyler ~ I have a leak on my lower radiator hose connector. when I reached down to the connector 10:55 , I could feel the water dripping. My friend told me that There is a O ring within the connector... do I need to replace the entire connector (if possible)? Or do I need to replace the O ring only? Or do I need to replace the entire radiator? Im loosing the coolant very fast, within 10 minutes of driving time. Radiator appears to be new enough to me... thanks in advance.
Why not spray wd-40 on the corner of the radiator every 6 months? Never mind.
8:12 I've own a 2004 Golf for 2 years and no one has ever showed me how to take apart the F up plugs.
The ideal thing is to have the vehicle krowned or rust checked every year that will prevent most rusting on the vehicle in all places. This was a used vehicle however and rusted a lot before we got it.

Can't you just take the radiator off, firstly removing the ventilator? If you have car lifts?

The bushings / mounts for the radiator wouldn't come off my old one is there a trick to get them off when I took one off I ripped it
It might just be stuck because of age. There isn't any trick to it....add some lube!

spent 99.9999999999999999% of my time trying to remove the freaking wiring clips.... what a horrific process...
Yeah! We only had to break 1 during the process to figure out how to take the clips off... interesting engineering
yea, figured out the clips ha, I got a radiator upgrade from ECS it would not fit my car... makes me pretty uset after taking the world apart. The mishimoto radiator would not fit the AC screen... I spent all night and most of today on it... ah. oh also the greatest challencge was getting the hose clamps on the new pipes. The new pipes seemed bigger, I had to get screw clamps the next day.

@@ricardopliego4273 what he meant was that VW could have designed it in a way that you don't have to take apart the whole front end of the car just to get the radiator out. I'm used to older cars and am quite shocked at how much work simple repairs are on modern cars.
Also if you can get it on a lift, you can pull it out of the bottom. A lot less work. But this is the the only way to do it with a lift.

The original radiators don’t last long on the MK4 , the plastic couplers start to chip away , hoses start to pop off .
