- These are some various clips from our 3-day camping trip in Cades Cove, located in the Tennessee side of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
Cades Cove is one of the most beautiful places anywhere, with majestic mountain scenery, open fields, historic churches and homeplaces, and numerous opportunities for viewing wildlife.

I grew up in NW GA right across the state line from Chattanooga, TN. We loved to go to the Smokies back in the 60s when I was a child. Fast forward to today and it’s just too crowded! I can’t take it! The poor bears get harassed and honestly I’m amazed they even show their faces. After the horrific fires I’m really glad to see all the wildlife. Thank you for your beautiful videos. You take me places my poor feet can’t go anymore!

We live in East Texas and follow you from time to time on some of your videos you do great work and we vacation from time to time in Cades Cove and it is truly one of the most beautiful places on Earth. We have kinfolks buried in the cove and enjoy visiting from time to time keep up the good work and keep the videos coming and my God bless

I'm curious which cemetery your relatives are buried in? We generally do a tour of all 3 of the main ones at the churches.
Mostly Methodist and PB maybe all three is our family left that area in the late 1800s for East Texas we live in Nacogdoches Texas now and our last name is Sparks

A coin left on a headstone lets the deceased soldier’s family know that somebody stopped by to pay their respect.
Leaving a penny means you visited. A nickel means that you and the deceased soldier trained at boot camp together. If you served with the soldier, you leave a dime. A quarter is very significant because it means that you were there when that soldier died.
I knew it was something like that, in regards to military service.

We camp every fall in Elkmont, in our Rpod. Also, drive the Cove, lunch along the way, then stop in the store for soft serve. A good rain fly to the ground helps. 😌 Happy Camping 🏕 ☺️ That campground is so noisy with kids!
I live in western NC, and I love going to Cade's Cove.
Donnie Lawson has a channel. He tells the history of this tree. He is from up around Cade's Cove...Wears Valley...Townsend.. its close. He talked to a man who knew the family. I want to say the family name was Gorman or Golman. This family had a son who was in WW2..and he planted that tree for him. He put an old tire rim I guess to protect the tree to keep it from being cut down and to mark it. Well now the tree has grown and the rim has merged into it. Interesting story.

You should go if you get the chance. It's one of the most beautiful places. The traffic can be a nightmare, but if you can go during the week instead of on a weekend, that should help.
@NCMemoryMakers I hope we get the chance at some point. We are retired but typically not driving long distance anymore unless we know the route pretty well. I do have cousins in Ashville, Hot Springs and Franklin that I'd love to see again. Is camping the best option for Cades Cove? It appears in your video that it's pretty remote.
@janetmoss6370 We love to camp there, just for the relaxation and the numerous trips we get to make through the Cove. The nearest town, is Townsend, which is only 7 miles away. So, it is remote in some sense, but it's not terribly far away if you need something from the store.
Plus, they have a beautiful camp store right there in the campground. You can get food, souvenirs, and ice cream there. As well as several types of camping supplies.
Most people do not camp there, but simply go over for a half day or a day. We have done that, as well. But we love to camp there at least once a year, for about 3 nights.
We actually have a separate video on the campground store, that you might want to check out, to get an idea of what all they have in there.
Cades Cove is 24 mi from Gatlinburg, about the same from Pigeon Forge, and 7 mi from Townsend. It can easily be done in under a day. And if you go when there is little traffic, just a few hours.
The last time I was at that church, there was someone there that said women went in one door and the men went in the other door. We love your videos!
That is a common explanation, and the one that I used to think was the case. But after reading the book called "The Cades Cove Story",, the man who authored that book said that it was simply a design that they used for no particular reason. He was actually born in the Cove, and is generally considered the authority on the Cove's history.

I love visiting the mountains,one of the most beautiful places on earth. Cade’s Cove is worth seeing even if you get caught in all the traffic that often happens. Everyone should visit at least once in their life. It is always a real treat to see a bear. I’m glad the weather worked for y’all for the most part. I don’t spend much time in Gatlinburg, I like to spend my time in the mountains.
live on NC side and do not go to Gatlinburg. i went last year to quilt show at pigeon forge convention center n its too much traffic anymore.i just cant do it. love the mountains though

I remember Gatlinburg (Main Street) was nothing but candle makers, glass blowing shops, fudge making shops back in the 60-70’s. That’s what I wish they would bring back. There was a few such shops like that on Craft Loop Road off of Hwy. 321 towards Cosby, near the Food City store. I don’t know if they’re still there since the fires in 2016.
Yes, there are still some craft stores in the Arts & Crafts Community. But I remember like you mentioned, when downtown Gatlinburg was like that. The good old days.

Just watching your video and would like to tell you something about the cemeteries in Cades Cove. We are local and visit the cove often. My husband works part time at a funeral home. Relatives of the families can still be buried in the cove but the graves have to be hand dug. They will not allow the diggers that companies use to come into the cove. I just think that’s interesting. You also mentioned the Cliff Dweller’s business. It is still opened but has moved out to Crafters Village. If you haven’t visited that area then you need to.

The wife and I were there in the early 60's searching the cemeteries for her family names. There were still folks living there before the feds parkified the cove. For a feeling of that time find and watch "A Walk in the Spring Rain" a movie filmed there, bittersweet love story.

We were there from Friday night before Labor Day, for 3 nights. Left on Labor Day Monday.
Yes, camping there is a wonderful experience. We typically drive through twice a day...morning and evening.
This is so beautiful a place, wow, and y'all made it very interesting and entertaining. I want to go there. I LOVE the tree frogs, crickets, and nature sounds. Even the children's laughter, play, is not too annoying, lol.

I know that is a common theory, and I've had other people comment the same thing. But if you read the book "THE CADES COVE STORY", written by a man who was born in the Cove and an historian of the Cove, he denies that was the motivation behind it.
He said that was simply the architectural design that they decided to use.
I honestly don't know which way it is.

It will be very difficult since I am not in good shape but I will try my best. After I hiked Mt. Washington about 10 years ago, I said I won’t climb any mountain over 5000ft but…after watching this video, I really want to see the views myself. This film is very informative.
Mt. Leconte is a beautiful, but very tough hike. We actually have a video on that, as well. It was from last June.

The reason for the 2 doors at the Methodist Church is one door was for the men and the other was for the women. A penny on a tombstone means that you visited the grave, a nickel means that you trained with the deceased and a dime means that you served with the deceased.

Just came across your CC camping. Drive thru gatlinburg was enjoyably. We come down every year. About when did you tape this, we were there 3rd week of August.
It was Labor Day weekend, of 2022. We camp there every year on Labor Day weekend.
My birthday is June 14th and we will be in Cherokee NC that week. I love to trout fish. I have heart surgery in February so we will see. We are planning lots of camping

I’m in Mo. now but I lived out there for several years. At Townsend we took a very semi truck size inner tube and attach a wood bottom in it so rocks won’t gouge ya. Then go floating those rapids! Take a paddle if you want. Beautiful area of America isn’t it???

Yes, we always camp in Cades Cove on Labor Day weekend, for 3 nights. We leave on Labor Day Monday. We arrive in the campground the Friday before that.

We also love East Tennessee, and the Townsend area. Much more quiet than Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. And Cades Cove is one of our favorite places.

Hey guys. First time viewer. What a relief to find this vid. I was thinking it sure would be nice to find a video of an individual going through Cades Cove and this was the first one that popped up and was just what I was looking for while recovering from a rather nasty stomach issue! When I’m feeling down or blue I’ll put on a Smokies vid and reminisce about all the dozens and dozens of trips I’ve made there from the time I was a young family man outta the USAF to now @ 61yrs old.
It is odd how so many folks go there but never venture into the park? I love the place but honestly, to me, making it through Pigeon Forge is ‘the price one pays to get to Gatlinburg if not coming in from Townsend. It’s like the midway of a county fair but to each their own I guess.
Just a suggestion that you tubers include the month & year in your conversation for when these vids age. I know the posted age is on the vid but still. When I see how nice it looks in your vid, I take note as a potential time of year to go to the park.
I’m not sure how long you guys have been going there, but for me a sense of history and romance was a big drawing card and so many things are changing now to accommodate the new generation of tourist who are more tuned into short attention span, blinking light every 5 feet kind of experience versus when I started going there and you could go through Gatlinburg particularly and actually feel the vibe of the mountains and what they were trying to promote. I don’t like change and it is nothing but change there anymore. You brought up the tin roof and I did not know it was gone but I and the one that I worshiped would go into that place, not that it was particularly different than the other places like it, but it was just a known stop with each trip we would go there and knowing that even a trinket shop that I have known for so many years is gone breaks my heart. Between the “modernization” and what I consider the cheapening out of Gatlinburg, along with the devastation of the environment from all the recent storms and 2016 fires the “Gatlinburg Experience “ is only a short few years from being lost forever. I know a lot of people will be basically thinking OK boomer, but the crowd they are catering to now are like a group of seagulls that when one or two jump to a different place the whole flock goes to a different place, they have no connection, loyalty, or deep appreciation or love for anything long-standing. Just one guy‘s opinion, but seeing that basically weed bars pop up in Gatlinburg it’s just absolutely atrocious and grieves me so much. Soon it’s going to be tattoo parlors and adult movies with drug users lined up in the alleys.
This is why of the park is important. Even with the changes from storms and fires one hopes that it returns to its former glory and is probably the only thing that has a chance of doing that. I remember so many years seeing these great hundreds year old trees in the Meadows of Cades Cove and how they have disappeared through the years from lightning strikes and severe thunderstorms and feeling a sense of loss. Now that I retired I may be able to squeeze the last bit of positive vibe and memory from a place that meant so much to so many people for so long before Gatlinburg became nothing but a land investment destination.
Blaine‘s restaurant near the space needle was another long-standing institution that just killed me to see rebranded, even though it’s basically the same place thank goodness, and I’ll admit not everything new is on the down side as several of the new restaurants near the south end of town are incredible and they are appropriate changes, fitting in with the original vision.
As long as I can go to Park Vista Hotel restaurant past the space needle for my arrival and departure breakfast, and go at least one time for a treat to myself and have a steak and mountain light beer at Cherokee Grill they’ll still be somewhat of an anchor to the old times. Honestly if I lose those two final anchors to my past history there I may may only approach the park from the Townside side until they “improve” it.
You know, exploring small North Carolina, other East Tenn locations for ‘nostalgia Gatlinburg’ refugees such as myself could be a good growth opportunity for your channel.
Well sorry to blab, but it was good to take a minute to dwell on what a truly magical experience it used to be when entering that town, it was Switzerland in America, a really magic kingdom instead of the midway at a Myrtle Beach or county fair.
Thank you for sharing your comment. Like you, I feel the same way in many regards, about how Gatlinburg has changed. I, too, feel sad when something I remember enjoying in years past, is replaced with something "new". The "new" usually, with rare exceptions, is not an improvement.
I still remember the Rebel Corner and the Wishing Well, and wish those stores were still there.
We actually have done some small town NC and East TN videos...Maggie Valley, Waynesville, McAdenville, Blowing Rock, Jonesborough, etc.
Also, we both love the Cherokee Grill. Although we do not drink, we love the steaks and the prime rib there. I would hate to see that place go. As far as I'm concerned, their ribeye is the best in town.
after I sent my comment I did see your other videos for North Carolina. I have seen ads and brochures for an area called blowing rock that I would be interested in seeing a video on for some first-hand information. I did not want to imply I drink a lot I just like to have a beer with a steak but other than that I really don’t and I would not do it if I was with somebody. that usually just when I’m by myself as never to become a stumbling block for someone else. Cherokee Grill is my number one memory remaining from back in the day so to speak. Once it goes or significant changes then they will be weeping throughout the kingdom lol and I will just focus on Townsend. I’ll look forward to your other videos, take care, maybe we’ll run into each other one day.

Blowing Rock was one of the towns we featured. We live just down the mountain from there.

The way you have your tarp set up water will drain off at the entrance for your tent. Turn your tent so the entrance is running parallel with your ridgeline.
Did that at Smokemont (see that review), and the inside got so soaked that we packed up and went home. This worked quite well, as it rained our last night there.
We spent Thanksgiving week in the Smoky Mountains and somehow CC got left out. Good excuse for a return to Cherokee for the fudge shop.
That's a good way to look at it. We're always looking for excuses to come to this area.
Wow, I’m surprised to see all those cones and no parking for the overlook areas! I honestly don’t know how I feel about the paying to park for 15 minutes. Has that come into effect yet? As you said The National Park is a no fee park, but I think I’d rather pay an entry fee than to pay for every time I want to stop and stretch my legs or take a picture or walk up the mountains to hike for a little bit. I’m willing to support these beautiful mountains but this just sounds crazy to me. And, yes I do belong to The GSMNP and Friends of the Smokies and I do donate to this beautiful park. I don’t know, mixed feelings on this…!
I completely understand your feelings. I have mixed sentiments, as well.
They can never charge an entrance fee to this Park, because it was in the original agreement made with the landowners who once lived here.
This is kind of a way around the entrance fee, except that if it were an entrance fee, everyone would have to pay it regardless of how long they were staying. At least this way, as long as you don't stay in any one place, you don't have to pay to enter. You don't have to pay the parking permit to stop and take a picture or stretch your legs. It's about being in any one spot for over 15 minutes. If you stay for 14 minutes or under in any spot, you're good. It's only if you plan on parking like for a hike, or if you plan to be in the same spot for more than 15 minutes.
Yes, it came into effect in March of last year. In a way, I can kind of see it. People were abusing the Park and trashing it, and parking at trailheads in areas along the side of the road that were not even designated for parking. That has been pretty much done away with. It does generate some revenue for the Park, but I only hope it helps with some much needed improvements.
@@NCMemoryMakers I get it, I mean it kinda all makes sense. I know when Roosevelt dedicated the GSMNP back in 1940, I believe, the agreement was to never charge an entry fee. It just a shame I guess that some people have to ruin the natural beauty by leaving their marks (graffiti) on this beautiful land. And for what? I do agree if the fee goes towards the Park upkeep and if it can stop some of the vandalism then I understand it. Do you know how much the fees are, @NCMemoryMakers? It’s just shocking or surprising to me to see the security cameras and now the fee for parking. It’s a shame things have really changed since I’ve been going here for over 60 years, but a beautiful area to visit just the shame. It’s been 4 years since I’ve been back and watching your videos I’m getting a really bad itch to go back soon. Haha Just praying my health improves soon so I can return. I love my Smoky Mountains! It really is sad, to see that they've even had to install security cameras in Cades Cove. I don't understand what type of person thinks it's okay to write on, or deface the structures.

But that is just something they have done on their own. We have never wanted to come across as having our hands out. We love doing this, and we are basically just recording and uploading things that we've pretty much always done. But we never want anyone to feel obligated to do that. The fact is, our channel has become monetized and has grown. That has helped us to take more weekend trips than what we would have, otherwise.

Seeing the scenery in Cades Cove, is something that a lot of viewers like, so naturally we're going to put a lot of that in there. We can't do every single thing that everybody wants. We believe there's a good balance in our videos.

Have you done Elkmont campground the best in the park try to get one on the river
Yes, we've actually done Andrews Bald twice. The views up there are beautiful. There are azaleas, and lots of rhododendron.
When we hiked up there 6 years ago, the summit of Gregory Bald was literally covered in azaleas. Seemed like there were at least a million blooms.
And you are correct, that Andrews is a much easier hike.
We have not camped at Elkmont. We do have a video that was shot from there, when we went to the Troll Bridge, and also the little village that is up above the campground.
I just found your channel here and you did a great job thanks. I myself have never been to Cades Cove but after seeing your video it is on my camping list. Would you know if the camp grounds let's motor homes stay or is it only for tents ? Thanks
They do let motor homes in, but I do not believe there are hook ups. Also, Loop C is generator free, but I think you can run one in Loop B.

Another video about the smokey mountains mentioned something about the large number of people from appalachia and Tennessee that fought in world war 2.it was a sizable number so I guess that was part of why the memorial was established there

I think you are referring to my Soft Topper. It is a canvas cover that is much lighter than a typical camper top, and folds down to allow someone to ride open air.
Loved this video, cades cove is our favorite place, we are actually going to be camping there this weekend in a tent for the first time, I can't wait. I was wondering though do the bears ever come in the campground at night messing around? I'm a little on the nerves side lol.
I'm sure they do at times, but we've never seen one in the campground. Be aware that they are very strict with the food storage regulations, for that very reason. If you keep your food put up, and not in the tent with you, you'll be fine.

I loved the long video of Cades Cove and your pups. I'm not happy about having to pay for parking next year, we spend a lot of money in Tennessee especially Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg but I'm really disappointed in this new law.
Yes, me too. The problem is, the National Park is completely separate from the surrounding towns, so they each have their own regulations. And paying for parking in Gatlinburg is bad enough!
It is technically a way to get money from Park visitors, without charging a Park entrance fee, since part of the agreement of establishing the Park, was that there would never be a fee charged to enter it. My hope is, however, that it might cut down on the excess traffic, people parking where they shouldn't, and those who come into the Park and don't respect it.
We'll see.

Have not gone out to Tremont, but yes, we did go up to Roan Mountain for the rhododendron back in 2019.
We also took a drive up there this past April, because it had snowed. We have a video on that, that you might enjoy.

I camped at cades cove last month. In one area there was a bear. A man 3 cars ahead gets out and watches a bit. I sat patient then he started motioning for people in the HUGE October line to get out and come look AND THEY DID! I waiting another solid 5 minutes then I stuck my head out and said "Folks, look behind us you can't just stop the like like this get in a pull over or slow down a bit but keep moving!"
One lady one car ahead of me was nodding her head and said "can you believe you have to tell adults that" 🤦♂️ people are so selfish..insane

you have to have one for parking for any reason, anywhere. you also have to have one for each vehicle, if you have more than one vehicle.

i was glad they opened up parsons branch road again after it was closed for several years. i can once again come from cherokee side n go out cades cove side and make a big loop instead of same way. problem is now everybody knows about that road from them closing it and it will be busy im sure.

Definitely not a copper head! Copper heads have a Hershey Kiss pattern and do not have vertical strips around the mouth.
You were correct. It was a water snake which some species have a tornado pattern like that one did.
Yes, I was very surprised that he wouldn't know that, since he works for the Park and apparently is the guy who is supposed to keep them out of the buildings.
I was grateful that he didn't harm it, thinking it was a copperhead. He just took it to a nearby field and turned it loose.
First of all, great vid as usual my fine folks! Second, hate to say the snake guy was wrong but the snake guy was wrong, lol. Copperheads don’t have round pupils and the banding was wrong. 100% water snake. I grew up in south Louisiana playing in rivers and bayous, I’ve caught many a snake species venomous and non. I should know the difference, lol
Yes, on the video I thought the markings were similar, but I still knew that wasn't a copperhead. After looking up the differences, I see that a copperhead has markings that are shaped more like a "Hershey's kiss", while the watersnake doesn't. Definitely a watersnake.
Interestingly, I am on some Cades Cove Facebook pages, and the topic of snakes and their identification, came up. I shared what had happened, and a volunteer Ranger replied to me. I sent him this video, and he also agreed that his guy was incorrect, and asked if he could share the video with his colleagues, which this guy removing the snake is one of. He said he wanted them to be more informed in identifying the snake species in the Park.
There are always snakes in that structure, and this one got removed because of mistaken identity. The Ranger did tell me that they don't kill the snakes they capture...just move them away from people.

Jenn is under the assumption that a good snake is a dead snake, but I’ve been trying to convince her that one of the reasons we aren’t overrun by rats and mice is because of them. I’m not sure my point is getting across to her though brother, haha.
@@caddyshack7144 Well, you are correct. Any time I see a black snake around the house, I leave it alone. We had one tangled up in some old plastic fencing that I had, and my wife and I actually went down there and freed it and let it go. It didn't thank us or anything, but it just felt good to help it. They are very beneficial, and I'd rather have a black snake around, than a rat any day of the week.

Absolutely not a copperhead. One of the Rangers actually saw this video, and asked me if he could share it with their staff so that that mistake would not be made again.
