and Lancia Delta S4 has twincharged engine. Using both supercharger and turbo to make a lag free engine that can provide maximum power from 1000rpm to 8000rpm in the days before Anti Lag systems
Someone crashed a vintage Lancia 037 rally car and injured 12 spectators during an exhibition run at the Turin Motorshow a couple of months ago. Luckily it wasn't a high speed crash, the worst of the casualties was a woman with a broken leg and the car only suffered minor bodywork damage.
1:01 This was Andy Burton's heavily modified Peugeot 306 which had a Cosworth DTM engine inside of it, i had the pleasure of witnessing it in action on the Cambrian Rally back in 1999 and it was a epic piece of machinery, awesome to see it made it into this video!!
About the crowds being brave... I can still remember my dad taking me to a hill-race near our hometown. It wasn't rally, but it was on narrow public streets and the crowds were standing right next to it. We arrived a little late just to be informed that the race was cancelled because one of the first cars crashed into a group of people with dozens injured and one fatality. They completely cancelled the event then. I had been to the last one but never even saw a car...
Group B, anything went: turbocharged, supercharged, turbocharged and supercharged, N/A, inline 4, inline 5, V6... And let's not forget the large variety of displacements, from the 1.4L turbo of the Renault 5 to the 3.0L V6 of the Metro 6R4 and everything in between. 🙂
I will never forget being a child, waking up early here in Finland and going to the forest - being ready to watch those group B monsters. That Audi's 5cyl sound is unforgettable, even after all these years listening that brings back all those memories.
The Renault 5 turbo, its the blue and red car, the pilot of the car Jean Ragnotti, make a search and enjoy .Peugeot 205, all the lancias, the audis, the metro....great era
I owned a Renault 5 Turbo Street Version for 2 Years from 1991-1993. I have no clue, how i survived that. This Car was way to mean and fast for my Young age of 19 . Luckely the Turbo and the Engine broke down, before the Car could kill me :-)
Those older big turbo cars had such bad lag that the drivers had to brake and twist their foot to keep the throttle open and on boost which is how they used to slow but slingshot out of the bend. Amazing driving skills.
Love to see some older Rally Cars getting some love again, im honesty surprised something like this didn't take off in the US as you have so much land to do it, my favourite has to be the Audi quattro closely followed by the Lancia Delta HF Integrale and the Peugeot 205 GTi, great videos , have you checked out any BTCC as of yet, sorry im kind of new here?

My favorite motorsport which I rarely watch anyway! I love the look of old and new cars and these unbelievably modified mechanical beasts making very different sounds. Water, sand, gravel, asphalt, snow, mud. No matter. We're going fast!
I've had the pleasure to see professional rally drivers perform drifts on asfalt in a car show in Norway (Oslo motorshow). I couldn't believe the skill and precision...
Yeah and imagine if people like the fans started making a new rally division that was basically a modern version just with better safety standards yeah the power to weight ratio might not be the same anymore it might weigh a little bit more I would be okay with that, and so we wouldn't have to worry about fans literally standing right next to the side of the road and getting hurt set up some tents with projectors and speakers along the course so this way we don't have to worry about certain people getting hurt because they stood too close to the track or the car lost control and drones that have a transmitter connected to the car that allows it to follow from a certain distance at the higher speeds because that would be money worth investing in so that way they could record from above
fun fact about the Lancia Delta S4 its truly mad because the engine is aspirated via both a supercharger and a turbocharger...kinda why I LOVE the sound it makes
High there Ian, makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up, right?I loved getting in my uncle's Renault Fuego whenever he visited us in northern england,he would take whoever dared for a drive around north wales, what a thrill that was, he's eighty plus now but still uses his gears to slow down, good video, dude, kicked right out of the park, again, high to the little ones and Daniela, biggest of big thumbs up, sir,we want more, pretty please, chau for now
Yes, the Paris-Dakar Rallye.... this was cool. And now the only twin-engine trucks can be found at airports in ARFF - Firefighting trucks like the Magirus Superdragon or the Ziegler Z8 with 2 770hp Scania engines....
Great video man ! These sounds makes me nostalgic. Also if you haven't checked it already, I advise you to watch Sebastien Loeb Pikes peak POV, beating last record by 1minute and 33 seconds back in 2013.
What I love about this footage is that you can tell what kind of car from a distance. Today's car you would have to go up to see what make or model it is.
Those Audi quattros 😎 There's just something on that 5-cylinder growl, my absolute favourites... But Stratos, Porsches, Subarus and MG Metros have cool sound too.

They all love racing so we often go to watch rally stages live near us. This year we were on four of them. Hello from Slovenia 🇸🇮
Fun fact. The first car is a Peugeot 205 and the rally trim had two engines. One was the legendary 20B rotary and the other one was 4 honda hornet 600 engines mashed together to create one of the most vicious sounding 2.4 V16s ever
Rally is a automotive sport that will never be beaten in awesomeness, because as you said 100 mi an hour over snow tarmac sand gravel mud in certain areas going over hills doing jumps power sliding like it's no one's business, add yeah 40 years old and they sounded that amazing they still sound that amazing you get an engine and rebuild it to those classic settings with the same kind of parts both engine and exhaust it would sound just the same and it would be a symphony for most automotive fans, like I know at least three people who would have to change their shorts because of how much they creamed themselves just getting to sit in an area and listen to these classic cars just going at the track even if it's a road course But that 5 cylinder Audi Quattro oh God that was just music
I love seeing your face and knowing by the sound what's coming. Yes, that was Opel. Opel Manta. Easily 20K € in Finland if you find a good one. Or even 30k. A basic street version. Mid and late 90's when I was a young car fellow, they were still pretty cheap and a bunch of friends had one. Believe it or not, the base engine was 1,2.😂 What I used to see back then were built up 1.9 turbos i think. Some snob teens I knew back then had a Lancia Delta HF...damn those are expensive today. They were back then too but jeeeeZ today...I've seen specimens up to 50k€ in the net. Very rare cars. Haven't seen one live for at least 10 yrs.
Love myself an Escort Cosworth. One of my favourite cars of all time. Back in the mid 90s they were in the same insurance group as Ferraris and cars like that lol 🤷🏼♂️ also the one you didn’t know was an Opel Manta
What I notice while watching these videos, is that a lot of innovation actually is quite visible on the track. Most of these older (definitely the front engined) cars seem to dip more in corners and understeer seems more abundant then later cars. Back in '95, when I started my career in a technological research centre for materials, we were developing a new type of cast iron for engine blocks, which made them about 40% lighter. The first pilot to drive this type of engine was Colin McRae in a Ford and it took him about a season to adapt to the lighter car. Not sure if there was a difference in suspension through the years as well, but it kind of seems obvious to me. That Opel was an Oepl Manta, I think 2.0 liter 4 cyl.
I have this image in my eyes, but unfortunately I cannot find a photo of it online: Walter Rohrl during the rally of Portugal in the eighties with the Quattro. Taking a right hander on a mountain road, drifting with the front left wheel barely on the lip of the road and the rest of the front of the car (including the right wheel) completely outside, hanging in the air over the steep mountainside...
@@IWrocker Actually, it's not that surprising, the main key to its success is the car's low weight. The Audi Quattro has over 450 hp, 600 hp in the Sport quattro S1 E2 version, possible to boost up to 1000 hp in the short term, but the weight is only 1090 Kg. Those cars were very technically advanced for their time. Just look at the wiki on Rally Group B. American culture is big heavy cars. It's just that a small and especially light car brings huge advantages. Unfortunately, such is no longer produced today, mainly because of regulations (I mean for production cars).
In the group B era , some teams had a psychiatrist along to help with both drivers and mechanics to cope with the spectators, they found strands of hair and fingers on cars , the crowds where actually playing dare with the cars seeing who jumped out of the way the last ,and trying to touch them showing the dirt on their hands to eachother. just be cold blooded , wipe of the blood and push on was the mindset during those years.
i bet you did not know the ford escort rs was designed to have a third rear wing between the existing two wings that is how the designer wanted it but ford said no to it so a car show helped him build it and it looks AWSOME and the rally driver that drove it said it made a incredible difference to the handling.
I think you would enjoy "St Mary's Trophy" videos on TH-cam if you've not seen them already. Old American V8s racing old European cars on track. Normally driven by ex or current UK Touring Cars drivers. On the rally stuff, the way these drivers switch feet so quickly amazes me! Left-foot braking one minute then using their right foot on the brakes because they now need to use the clutch. Sequential gearboxes have taken that element away now but still some good "pedal cam" clips to watch from older cars.
@jinxvrs Oh agreed! Never been 😭 but watch the footage on here. Thought the st Mary's Trophy in particular would appeal to Ian but I'm sure he'd enjoy the other classes at Goodwood Revival too 👍
You should check the low dogs too, you may enjoy 'em; the Renault 8s Gordinins, the SEATs 124 Sport, the SEATs 1430s, The SEATs 1200, the SEATs 131 Abarths, those were the low keys that we were used to see here, in the N of Spain. Many 911s, BMs, Alpines 110s and 310s, some GTOs.. Capris.. , the Rally always has been kinda strong here, in the N of Spain; and btw, try a Voll Damm one day if you've a chance our best "battle beer", 7.2 double malted beer, it's cheap or regular priced but.. tastes damn good, my favourite beer, if they don't have it..!? i go somewhere else, it's quite unique.
Rally is great, the guys know every screw of their vehicle and know how to handle it. For me the greatest is Walter Röhrl he is now 77 years old and still drives like a young Man.In 1987, Röhrl needed 10:47.85 minutes for his ride with the S1 to Pikes Peak.Today Walter Röhrl works as a representative and test driver for Porsche and that with his age and he is significantly involved in the development of chassis and performance.
Lancia Delta S4 :Acceleration is equally remarkable for this icon capable of recently reaching 760 hp and 690 Nm of torque, or from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 2 seconds and from 0 to 200 in 7.6 seconds. Amazing
You ear a dinosaur growling from the deep forest, you feel a vibration in the ground and, BAM! A rallycar jumps from nowhere and disappear as fast as it comes
I watch Le Mans 24 h each year, and has done it for 30 ys. And my jaw is always on the floor. Absoutely insane how a car can drive a full day and night with a median speed of over 200 km/h including pit stops and change of drivers...
If you accelerate the car "The tears of emotion must run horizontally to the ear." (Walter Röhrl Rally Legend) You have to have a look at "Die Nacht von Arganil" Rally Portugal 1980. Walter said to his Copilot " Christian fasten your seat belt, i will run the special stage so fast that all other drivers will give their Licences back" and he did. In the night with heavy fog he was 4 Minutes faster then the second best, he made more minutes difference in that one stage than in the hole Rally Portugal.
im proud of you! You get the point of the Escort. These are the best balanced 4wd production rally car ever! couse of the longitudial Engine Gearbox concept and not so front heavy like most other with transverse Engines. In my opinion the Escorth cosworth is the best production style rally car.
Group B 4wds didnt have have handbreak, mid diff technology wasnt there yet, thats why you see cars unable to take hairpins, many times they had to back up a bit.
4:50 That is a Metro 6R4. Group B had complicated rules for Turbo and Naturally Aspirated engines, But in a nut shell Turbo cars were limited to 4 pots and 2 litres, but he NA cars could go 6 pots 3 litres. The 6R4 went the NA route...That engine ended up in the Jaguar XJ220, which was destined for the Group B GT series. The Ferrari F40, Porsche 959, Jag XJ220, McLaren F1, these were casualties of the fall out of the demise of Group B. It would have been amazing to see all these cars pounding around a track.
there will never be such a savage, brutal sound out of hell like the audi quattro 5 cyl. he was great, powerful and the only one who comes with such e special engine, coming from the alldays cars.this one had such a special, unique sound, over 500 m far away, everybody knew what comes next to them.never forget this.😎😎😎 btw, the americans missed this juvel of motorsport complete 😂walter röhr said:" compared to ralleydriving, formula1 is kindergarten!"" take a view at walter röhrl runs pikes peak!!
"Good drivers have dead flies on the side windows." (Walter Röhrl, World Rally Champion 1980 & 1982)
Rally is like automotive ballet. The forces, risk, difficulty, expertise required and elegance and precision of execution is unmatched.

Audi 😍
Best Regards from Luebeck Germany 👋
Man I always love Porsche on rally, GT3 are best. Their sound is perfect .
Well, can you imagine how fast that lancia s4 does 0-60mph?........... 2.5 seconds on GRAVEL
@@alviscvetkovs1022 that is truly astonishing 🎉🎉
I love the sound of all of them, but BMW, 80's Ford and Porsche are probably my favorites.
i bet you did not know the ford escort rs was designed to have a third rear wing between the existing two wings that is how the designer wanted it but ford said no to it so a car show helped him build it and it looks AWSOME and the rally driver that drove it said it made a incredible difference to the handling.
The Goodwood Revival (which includes the St Mary's Trophy) is a superb event with many different racing classes to enjoy.
@jinxvrs Oh agreed! Never been 😭 but watch the footage on here. Thought the st Mary's Trophy in particular would appeal to Ian but I'm sure he'd enjoy the other classes at Goodwood Revival too 👍
Look up 10years of wrc on youtube, first video. Old but gold.
For an awesome sound from a humble 4-cylinder Ford, check out the M-Sport video of Malcolm Wilson in Greystoke Forest - three minutes of pure bliss!
After the Stratos was an Opel Manta followed by a Renault 5 turbo.
Love the Lancias
Yep an Opel Manta then a Renault 5 turbo a Lancia o37 then a SWB Quattro. My bro had a road going Opel Manta. He still regrets selling 30 years later.
Lancia Delta S4 :Acceleration is equally remarkable for this icon capable of recently reaching 760 hp and 690 Nm of torque, or from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 2 seconds and from 0 to 200 in 7.6 seconds. Amazing
You ear a dinosaur growling
from the deep forest, you feel a vibration in the ground and, BAM!
Always loved the look of the 6R4.
If you accelerate the car "The tears of emotion must run horizontally to the ear." (Walter Röhrl Rally Legend)
You have to have a look at "Die Nacht von Arganil" Rally Portugal 1980.
That Porsche 911 was a Monster
Group B 4wds didnt have have handbreak, mid diff technology wasnt there yet, thats why you see cars unable to take hairpins, many times they had to back up a bit.
Peugeot 205 T16 🇫🇷
The Lancia Stratos had a Ferrari V6 so that might explain the sound.
The Opel after the first Stratos was a Manta.
V6 Dino/ fiat not ferrari
@@David-ge8sq Not according to this.

2:29 that really looks exactly like dirt 1.0 and 2.0 ..I want a lets play from you!
Have you ever watched the r u f yellow bird lap of the nurburgring. That's a really good video
Yes , that was an Opel , the famous Opel Manta . To be exact Opel Manta B .
4:50
That is a Metro 6R4.
It would have been amazing to see all these cars pounding around a track.
peugeuot 205 T16 no doubt but love all of them!! nice content
I love the old classics like the ford escort mk1 and mk2
Please react to "Juha Kankkunen driving like a maniac @ 1000 Lakes Rally Finland 1994". Some crazy mechanics and driving! Juha was a true master!
The stratos uses a Ferrari dino engine, that's why it sounds so exotic
Yes it's the Opel Manta and after that the Renault 5 Turbo and think that thunderous sounding one is the Porsche 959.
there will never be such a savage, brutal sound out of hell like the audi quattro 5 cyl. he was great, powerful and the only one who comes with such e special engine, coming from the alldays cars.this one had such a special, unique sound, over 500 m far away, everybody knew what comes next to them.never forget this.😎😎😎 btw, the americans missed this juvel of motorsport complete 😂walter röhr said:" compared to ralleydriving, formula1 is kindergarten!"" take a view at walter röhrl runs pikes peak!!
Take a look at Adam Backström in his old Volvo Pv544 video from about 2021 0-2022
