There are both replicas and originals in the Eifel Rallye Festival . The Audi with the red and blue stripes is a replica of Bobby Unser´s 1986 PikesPeak car. The plain white Audi is a restored original, and was prepared by the „heritage division“ of Audi Motorsport, driven by Stig Blomqvist in this event. It was originally used in the Olympus rally 1985 in the United States.
I was wondered and excited at same time when noticed Blomqvist name at that Quattro some time before. And after couple of turns I already knew that this is he. His precisely and accurate driving style is still recognizable even at his age. Stig is epic legend!

Aren't they “roadlegal” only for driving between stages? We have special licence plates for rallye car here in Czechia and I thing you can't just go to Lidl with such car
@@HubertFrey They are actually completely street legal. Every Car in Germany needs TÜV inspection every 2 Years to be street legal and all rally cars registered in Germany have it. Theres a Video here on TH-cam from German GRIP Motorshow where they took Sébastian Ogiers VW Polo WRC and drove it on the street with random people they asked in front of Supermarkets
@@ncredibledark7926 Ok, better in Germany. In Czechia, they are of course road legal with regular inspection. However they have special license plates and they can be driven during race events and between stages. But you have to transport them to the event on trailer
In Spain we call that Renault 5 Phase 1 "Fat ass"....imagine why... years later Renault put out for sale the so-called Phase 2 that had the same wheelbase....and lost the nickname and magic
On the day that Citroen DS was launched, they took 12,000 deposits, and 80,000 over the 10 days of the motorshow. That last Lancia was THE icon, the 037. The last rwd car to win the WRC, and beat the Audi Quattros. The second season of The Grand Tour had a great episode all about that battle.
yeah, recommended it awhile back, but maybe he hasnt seen

First unknown was Peugeot 306 Maxi, next was a Renault 5 Turbo. The old Toyota is a Celica, and after that was a Escort RS2000 MKII. After that was a Peugeot 205 T16, Group B rally car that dominated WRC after the Audi Quattro. After the Delta, was a Lancia 037, last rear wheel drive to won the WRC before the Audi Quatro. And the pronunciation is the second that you mentioned. Skoda is a Czech automobile manufacturer, since 1925, and this is a Skoda Fabia, with a shared base of the VW Polo. They need to have licence plates, even modern ones, to circulate on the roads between stages. So, they a road legal, technically.
@@patrickmichaelallen3146 the Stratos is a na v6, but the 037 is a supercharged inline 4, not turbocharged or twincharged, just supercharged, like american v8’s.
The Citroën DS has hydropneumatic suspension, a very smooth ride and some extra tricks (self leveling, selectable ride height). Also in the DS the brake pedal isn't a pedal, but a rubber dome on the floor panel which is tied into the hydropneumatics. Just by looking too violent at it would make it brake like hitting a wall.
As a Czech person I am really proud that you even know Skoda exist well done and thanks Ian (btw my name is the Czech version Jan pronounced similary :D) The car is Fabia WRC it was the second attempt from Skoda at WRC car first being the Octavia WRC sedan. Fabia WRC was the last car in WRC Colin McRae drove otherwise it was bit meh tbh potential but lot of DNFs :D Skoda had massive success in 1500s and lower classes from the 70s up to 2000s. Great cars like the Porsche of the east 130RS won Monte Carlo, Favorit dominated 1500s with 1300 engine for years and Felicia after was quite succesful WRCs not so much but awesome ad for Skoda esp in UK where it was seen as a joke car due to shoddy reliability due to soviet planning of things but still far best car in eastern block next to Ladas and Trabants etc. Now Skoda is dominating WRC2 with the new Fabia succesor(4gen) of this Fabia (1gen) in the video.
Yo I know this is an old comment but doesn't "Skoda" in Czech mean "Damage"?? Is it funny to Czech people? Or does it mean something different and/or depend on context?
@@alexnefi yeah it does it means "damage" but also "to je škoda" means "that's a shame". So there is few jokes on it but we are massively proud of the company so that is almost herecy to joke about it. But the name is actually after the founder Emil Škoda.
@@JanHejn Ah okay. Yeah we had a mayor in Salzburg whose name was Heinz Schaden. Schaden means damage in German. So I get it xD Also thanks for replying!
12:04 You mean the Citroen? It had a 4-cylinder, engine and transmission in the front. There used to be movies with Louis DeFunes where the whole rear end ripped off and he was still driving. A legend. Single-spoke steering wheel, hydropneumatic suspension with central hydraulic system, brake discs on the gearbox, cornering light and many attachments made of fiber-reinforced plastic. Was built from 1967-1975. The BMW has a longitudinal engine and front transmission and rear drive. Classic like the old US cars. Skoda is Volkswagen. They use the same platforms, technology and components. Usually they are a little cheaper and even better processed, since in the East they place more value on corrosion protection. A friend drives an Octavia turbo diesel with DSG transmission, it runs great. We had one as a company car with a 1.9l TDi and 66 kW, which easily made 220 km/h.
@Subie 69B thats one of the best things you can have when spectating at rally events. have been side by side with WRC legends in the 90s and 2000s while spectating at world rally events.. even waved at some of the drivers who usually wave back.
The "weird" car was an old beautiful Citroën DS 21. USeveral times winner of the Monte Carlo Ralies, the Daccar Rallies, etc. The older cars are original vehcles, kept in perfect shape. Acctually, the newer models require extensive maintenance during the rallies and obviously between rallies. All vehicles must be registered and fully legal Rally-inspectors go through every single machine to ascertain if they are in compliance with strict Rally regulatns. The Old Class B was unbelievable. After some accidents, namely the tragic one during an edition of the Rally of Portugal, tougher regulations and limitations rendered Class B Cars more "civilized" and less lethal. Thank you for another spectacular Video.
Skoda have a long and proud history in rallying dating back long before they became a part of the VW/Audi Group. In the 1970s and 80s Skoda entries came 1st in their class at the RAC Rally(UK) for 17 seasons in a row!!! The company began in Czechoslovakia in the 1850s and is one of the 5 oldest continuously surviving automobile manufacturers in the world(alongside Daimler, Peugeot, Opel and Tatra). Their road cars had a very bad and somewhat unfair reputation when they started selling them in the UK and became the butt of many jokes. They were definitely cheap and no frills but they were often more reliable than a lot of their British counterparts at the time (cough)British Leyland(cough) and have been a very common sight on British roads from the 1970's onwards, so they must have been doing something right. Since they became part of VW group they don't have any such issues.
Yeah Skodas got a bad rep in the 80s due to exports. Skodas of that time were essentialy stuck in development limbo (not to mention developmental dead end with rear-engine cars) due to tanking economy and tightening political control (in essence "we don't care if you are car design prodigy, you forgot to kiss the Partie's a**es often and publically so we will make you janitor). It still was arguably the best comblock car you could get in Britain in its price range. There was also notable incident when the Czechoslovak president (who was Slovak at a time) arbitrarily decideded to move all racing development from Mlada Boleslav to somewhere in Slovakia and when Skoda's president told him that it is impossible as there wouldn't be enough skilled workers, he was fired on the spot and even though the plan fell trough you can guess which company was on political s**tlist.
Czechoslovakia didn't exist in 1850 and company was previously known as Laurin and Klement, I think that Mr. Škoda bought it in like 20s. They were making bicycles before, as most of old car brands.
The Lancia Stratos GP4 Alitalia at the start is truly sublime. The engine note the still futurist(ish) styling, the stance and that livery all add up to make this car an automotive masterpiece. My favourite car from childhood, I just had to hear that launch again, and again, and again.. Reminds me of the Countach screaming through the desert in Cannonball Run.
The awesome thing aboutthis citroen is not only that its extremely unique It came out in 1955 That car looked like a spaceship back then One of the most ahead of its time car of all time It has a front engine and fwd
Great to see a reaction with genuine love and enthusiasm for the sport and not just reacting because it was popular with no real emotions like so many I've seen. Great stuff man. Love from the UK
The DS has won two Monte-Carlo rallyes (among a lot in other rallyes), in 1959 and in 1966 when the DS was opposed to the current double winner, the Mini Cooper S. There was an all terrain version that won two Rallye du Maroc.
6:02 Renault 5 Turbo with mid-engine and rear-wheel drive. In 1981, Jean Ragnotti won the Monte Carlo Rally with the Renault 5 Turbo. Then develop it between 180-210 hp and in 1984 they got 345 hp out of the engine. 🤘😜
The "H" at the end of a German plate (like on that stratos at the beginning) is a plate given to cars that were registered at least 30 years ago, are in very good condition and either stock or modified in a period-correct way. People who don't actually drive their cars (much) usually don't go through the trouble, so the cars that wear it usually can be spotted out and about in traffic^^ Lesser used, worse condition or "out of era" modified cars tend to just go with a red plate, like the black BMW E30.
Nothing is beating the Lancia Delta HF Integrale in the Martini livery. I saw one in the 80s parked inside an airport terminal as an advertising feature and you could feel the power of it just standing close to it. Stunning machine.
Rally cars have number plates cos they are road legal to drive stage to stage. Also remember 500 Road legal models must also be made and sold to enter a rally
"How many legends did Lancia make?" LOTS... The Lancia 037 is an interesting story. Lancia bent the rules and made an absolute tarmac slayer to try and compete with the 4wd cars. It was so good it won the WRC manufactures title, and it didn't compete in the dirt heavy rallies.
The car in question at 6:05 is a Renault R5 (in French "R-sank"). Yes, it's MUCH wider in the rear because in this homologation special, it went from a front engined car to a mid-engined car! The large gills in the rear sides house the radiators. This car appears to be a first-generation car, as Renault later built the R5 Turbo 2. Oh, and the marque is pronounced, "Lahn-see-ah"
6:03 That's a Renault 5 Turbo, and it's width is like that because many care like the 205 T16, MG V6R4 and this car have the engine mounted IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CAR, so that there's a better weight distribution 7:42 Ford Escort RS Cosworth, aka Cossie 10:37 Peugeot 205 T16 Pikes Peak, same situation as the Quattro, it has a twin turbo V6 mounted in the middle of the car and AWD.
100% street legal. And cars like the Renault 5 are wider at the back because that's where the engine is :) DS is midish with front wheel drive, the engine is behind the front axle (axle, gearbox, clutch, engine then the passenger compartment). I have one and it's great fun. The rally ones were usually 2 door with a shorter chassis.
I believe that rally should have been the natural evolution for NASCAR, think about it moonshine runners driving on back roads to deliver shine or getting away from the revenuers.
14:21 Škoda is my favorite brand! I might be a bit biased as Škoda is a Czech brand made in the Czech Republic and I am Czech, but I think their design was and still is always fresh and timeless. The sound of the Fabia WRC or the Octvavia WRC is my most favorite rally sound. The Fabia you see here is from the very early 00's when VW just took over the brand. The ''civilian'' versions are really good and fun too, I honestly wouldn't pick anything else than a Škoda. Today they are owned by VW and unfortunately they don't operate in the US, but you should check out more about this brand as Škoda was always quite a big part of rally. If you are really interested, you can watch these videos: Škoda Octavia WRC Launch Controls, Anti-Lag Backfires & Pure Sounds Škoda Fabia WRC: The Rally Car w/ The Most INSANE Turbo Anti-Lag Launch Control!!
The weird Car, a Citroën DS 21 from the middle 70s -- they won serious Rallies, namely Monte-Carlo. A little respect, plz, as George Constanza would say. Regarding the little Renault 5 Turbo, the Rally models had in fact wider rear axles. And yes, the vehicles feature license plates. And most of them are certified for street-driving. Observing regulations. Engine noises, flame-throwing at Mc Donalds ain't going to receive medals from the Police. A friend of mine here in Portugal owns an Alpine Renault formerly raced by a famous driver. That car won lots of Rallies, namely Monte Carlo, Corsica, etc. The Car, worth zillions, is part of his collection. A fortune is spent in maintenance, insurance, etc. The vehicle is taken to circuits and for service on a Trailer. One night he was in a famous Avenue in Lisbon, after a nice dinner. Upon leaving the Restaurant he saw his bad-ass Alpine stopped in a red light a few meters away. Making all the Rally noises that are music for real fans. The light changed and the Alpine took off like a rocket. A Mechanic from the fancy Garage, servicing the vehicle, was joy-riding through Lisbon with his Girl-Friend . Probably he had a great night. However his promising career as a Mechanic took a turn for the worse.
It's always nice to see these old rally legends race, they're so fun to see and so pleasant to hear. I see that there was both the Audi Sport Quattro S1 E2 Rally Car and the Pikes Peak one (the one in the video preview) and also there's the Peugeot 205 T16 Pikes Peak (the yellow one with ridiculously huge rear spoiler). The Citroen DS21 it was actually a good rally car, it won many rallies especially the african ones that were and are known for being difficult and that puts drivers and cars under heavy stress. The Lancia 037 was a fantastic RWD mid-engine car that won the 1983 WRC Championship winning the last championship for a RWD car. And for the question about how to pronounce Lancia actually the correct one is the one you are using and incredibly you're the only American that I know that pronounces correctly :)
Zero Understeer makes some really nice videos. I count myself lucky enough to have covered 5 or 6 Eifel rally festival and it was always a blast. About replicas. There are both replicas and originals. But most of the replicas are really nicely done with a lot of respect to the orginal specs
The Critroën DS is a 4cy front engine car The yellow Peugeot is a 306 Maxi. I love this car so much especially with the « Esso Ultron » livery. And the Peugeot 205 with big wing (like the second white Quattro ) was originally for the group B but when they stop the categories, Peugeot and Audi go Pikes Peak with their rally cars
The Eifel Rally Festival is actually not far from my home. The owner of the Stratos is a friend of my father, so i‘ve sat multiple times in that epic Stratos from the beginning and i can tell you: it’s worth both your kidneys to sit next to the driver while he’s flooring it😍 P.S.: You say Lancia right. In the italian language, the c is pronounced "tsh" when an 'i' or an 'e' is the next letter. Otherwise it’s pronounced like a 'k' due to the lack of the letter 'k' in italian😉
Skoda used to be a joke but since Volkswagen took over they have been nice cars. The Octavia is Used as mini cabs in the UK so they are bullet proof 👍🏻
Not entirely true. Skoda made decent cars even before VW took over. In the late '70s and very early '80s, Skodas would commonly win their class in international rallies.
@@Antawnyoo Nope no asociation with Fiat in Skoda ever. That was Lada in Russia they made a Fiat 124 for like 50 years. Skodas main car was a RWD rear engined 1,2l sedan and coupe called Rapid which won rally monte carlo. The model is 130RS it was dubbed Porsche of the east
I guess you could say that the Citroen DS is mid engined! It has a 4 cylinder mounted north-south behind the front axle line, driving the front wheels. The DS was very aerodynamic, and not just for its day.. It has hydropneumatic suspension, which gives a really good ride. The biggest issue for the DS was that its engine was an older design, having originated before WW2.
There is that legend (or fact, if you will) that François Miterrand, then president of France, while being driven in one was victim to an assassination atempt. But all the shooter managed to do was shoot one tire off. Still, with only three wheels, the driver was still able to drive the DS for several kilometers (still being chased?), to safety. I heard or read that story years ago, but that's the gist of it, and apparently it was true.
@@jeanackle It is a true story "when De Gaulle was being driven with his wife from the Elysee Palace to Orly Airport on the Avenue de la Liberation, 12 OAS gunmen opened fire on the presidential Citroën DS. As History tells it, “A hail of 140 bullets, most of them coming from behind, killed two of the president’s motorcycle bodyguards, shattered the car’s rear window and punctured all four of its tires.” Other reports I’ve read said the bullets blew out two or three tires instead."
Here is known by "boca de sapo" whivh means "frog mouth", and yes it was a car far ahead of it's time - still is in some features -, with features that were amazing like tyre-directed headlights, single nut wheels (like F1 by the way!), multi-level suspensions for all types of road, etc...
That was yellow Peugeot 306 Maxi Kit Car. Around 300 bhp, up to 11 k revs natural aspirated engine, sequentional 7 speed gearbox... on tight twisted asphalts that thing was giving really hard time to crews in WRC cars like that Corolla (300+ turbo boosted 2 liter, 4x4 drivetain, 6 speed sequentional gearbox).
You should try to watch videos of the European Hill Climbing Championship something similar to Pikes Peak but climbing at a lower altitude... I think you were going to enjoy it a lot with the machines that run that championship
Can be sure. All of that sounds much much better in person. The yellow Peugeot 306 of the begining is a kit car for example and, in autentic race specifications, almost leave blood in your ears. All those cars, uff...
The yellow Peugeot with the massive wing, was developed for Ari Vatanen to compete at Pikes Peak, and has a slightly lengthened chassis for also doing the Paris-Dakar rally
Older Skoda had the cheap quality to it and it was a low budget car for a while and yes is is owned by VW (in a group company with Audi porsche bentley seat lamborghini ducati m.a.n ) but for a few years maybe over a decade they have moved away from the cheap reputation, also Skoda Fabia an amazing rally car (not this one from the video but the gen after this one).
I've always pronounced it as in Armstrong's first name but sounding e-uh at the end like Lance e-uh, Lancia, whether right or not it's how I've always heard it 🤷♂️
@9:40 That Audi is an original S1 that was driven by Bobby Unser (the famous US racing family) on Pikes Peak 1986. Audi Sport Veghel (the owners) have at least 8 original rally Audis in their collection .
8:10 These old Escorts are such great rallying-platforms they still get used a lot today. The motorsport-community around them is so big that you can buy new chassis-shells, set up for different wheel-widths.
I see many comments already, but I'll put in my replies as well: - the Corolla was a WRC car, run between 1997 and 1999, it won 4 WRC events - the Peugeot is a 305 Kit car. It ran in F2 category, meaning 2 liter naturally aspirated 300 hp front wheel drive cars. Yes, they are very sharp, nimble, and responsive. - the stanced Renault 5 had a group B counterpart, I'm not sure what category this one was in. The reason behind the wider rear track is, that doing this pushes the car towards understeer. It can help calm down cars, that are tail happy. - the Skoda Fabia WRC was a nice rally car for its time. Perhaps not most succesful in WRC, but had lots of success in national championships all over the world. - Yes, all rally cars have to road legal, because you need to drive from one stage to another on public roads. You can drive them on the road, but due to the clutch, the brakes, the tyres, how loud they are, how stiff they are, and how expensive it is to run them, it's only done during rallies, otherwise their team carries them around on trailers.
13:38 It's pronounced "laahn-see-ya" with an extended first A syllable. Like, how when you're thinking and go "uhh" and you hold the syllable for half a second, same with the A in Lancia

I love those old boxy looking beasts! Much more than the curvy lines of modern cars. Those wide, powerful boxes on wheels! Wooow!
5:50 When the Renault 5 was new they did a "Renault 5 Cup" where they had famous race drivers compete in a fleet of these, as a "gimmick" during F1 weekends. First one was a disaster, like half the cars crashed. They changed the suspension and the second time went better. The Renault 5 Turbo was a homologation car for rallying, with a mid-engine layout and rear wheel drive. They are wider in the back, mostly to create space for wider tires but also for the radiator and intercooler.
The car you saw on 12:00 is a french Citroen or Citrön writen, from the 70ties, the shape is very french artist crazy from out of space design , a bit like chevy or bentley, typical bullet shape, the shape was mostly done to have aerodynamics so wind do better fow off the car and not slow it down. Also when it looks funny , the car was loved by many people, because it had one of the best shock absorber at this time and hydraulics, it was the 1st series car had brakeboosters onto the Disc brakes, it had swiveling headlights to light up curves and an automatic level control with hydralics , it did win 2 times the rally of monte carlo. Also you could very fast and easy change tires on the car by hydraulic lifting it, there was just some kinda bolt not to make the car drop, the car did get lifted as soon as you did start the engine and lifted down when turning the engine off. I do not know if there were different variants , but as far as I know they were Front wheel drive. In Germany we did call this car "the shark" der Hai , because of the shape and there was a small version of citoen , we did call "the duck." Die Ente. This car was a serial produced car a bit ahead of its time and the car of some presidents in Europe. The american mexican would love this car , maybe not in respect to its shape , but the hydraulics , hehehe. Roads in Europe were often bumpy specially over the landside, with this car you fly over ever hole in the way, if it was not there at all, because of the automatic leveling and hydraulics combined with very good shock absorbers, its was very luxery and famous for have a good, stressless ride. In Europe are small cars also very often, because we got cities which are very old do not have "Roads" in this sense more passage between houses and you will never get rid of historical , expensive , very old houses and cities , just to build a road , there are specially build very small cars for all those people , often in old Cities in France, Greece or Italy ... to have something better then just scooters and bikes, which will go through the small passages, some got even the door in the front where the stearing wheel is, so you can get out of the car even when left and right is a wall. in the USA its their build a new land from scratch and mostly big roads for the car industry and more mobile flow. There are some rallies where not only high tuned cars taking part of , some people drive their expensive and rare old timers , like they wanna show how good cars were build even in the 50ties to 80ties and for them its mostly to reach the goal at the end of the track and nostaligia , not so much of winning this. There are many different rallies some even only for old timer cars, some for buggies, some even for motocycles, some for Trucks , some for Jeeps, then some only limited by horse power so you can only drive very small cars, some are open for everyone with a rally licences, some are only open for high tuned car, there are local rallies , and of course the WRC World Rally Champoinship, there are very different Tracks and countries to challange , like Desert, jungle, Snow and Ice, Sand and gravel, Road and asphalt , some are very curvy and the car is tuned down to get all the power into the lowest gears for acceleration and some are more high speed where the car get tuned to more high speed power of course limited because there are bumps on the track you will not drive with 300km/h, but as fast as the track will allow it
Kinda late and dunno of it's been answered, but the wider stance on the renault 5 Turbo at 6:00 is because the engine is mounted in the rear and the vents you see are practically intakes for the engine and radiator
2:04 Peugot 306 Maxi 13:18 Lancia 037 fun fact; the very last RWD car to win a rally. The Skoda Fabia is practically a VW Polo or Seat Ibiza ;) VW actually had a very successful Polo some years ago. Skoda is a good value car for the money, since they share platform with VW, Audi you know what you get. They are just a cheaper alternative than the other two.
Skoda, part of VW Group, are similar to VW models. Not as fancy as VWs. The vehicle in this Rally is basically a Golf (used to be known in the US as Rabbits). In sum,a Skoda Fabia RS

The Stratos was the very first kit car especially build for Rally. It was the car that started the homologation procedure. 200 cars of a model needed to be fabricated ans sold as a roadcar in ordered for it to get a homologation to go rallying. The Stratos was especially designed and build as a car to (only) go rallying. It's a tubular chassis that uses a Ferrari Engine (out of the 308).
Viewing a rally event involves watching a small segment of dirt as some cars fly past, then rushing to a spot for next segment and repeat process. In my childhood one of dads friends we used to go watch and we would race our friends between segments (not goating you) so we can be in a good spot when cars come through next segment. Certainly helps to have a local with you who knows all.the back roads, caus rally is not exactly in the city. It's a bit different to most motor racing where you sit in 1 spot all day. "Wider rear end" I haven't checked dimensions.. But I think the Stratos, delta, and 098 all had wider rear than front. I had others in mind, but by time I finished pasting Vegemite on my toast and got back to lounge room I'd forgotten. 7:55 Toyota Celica (rwd), I think 72 roughly...still love how those things look..not bad made into convertible either. I always noticed them as a kid caus they looked similar to dad's RX2. 13:02 Bluebird was a popular race car, including Bathurst I think..I was pretty young.. Someone else would know for sure. 13:17 was the 098 I mentioned above. The last of the Rear Wheelers duri g the Audi reign. Interesting stories about how they couldn't keep up with AWD on dirt and snow and bent some rules to compete, but dominated on the 'tarmac' tracks.
Hi. I just randomly landed on your rally reaction videos. I like racing times to times, but I am not fan, but ! I like your enthusiasm, so I let there some pieces of info for you. I hope you'll enjoy. 11:23 This is (out of racing) the most legendary french car. Citroën DS. Made in the years 1955-1975. It was a revolutionary car, including hydropneumatic self-levelling suspension. It can loose a wheel and still run ! :'p In racing it had some wins around 1960. But its most legendary achievement was to keep track during 2 different attacks aiming president Charles de Gaulle, also known as Général de Gaulle. On the 2nd attack, the full standard/serial DS escaped, accelerating on drenched bad road, both front tyres flat and 14 bullet holes. At the arrival, the general said "This time it was tengent". Mrs de Gaulle had only one, but famous, sentence "I hope the chickens got nothing". "Chickens" is french slang for "cops" ! But she was referring to poultry prep they were carrying in the trunk. These days, we have a duo of car enthousiast youtubers who are becoming famous. Not only to car lovers, but all public ! Now, this week they have a stand in the prestigious Paris Motor Show. Citroen ds. thanks to both being the first mass production car equipped with hydropneumatic suspension, as well as disc brakesThe 1967 series 3 also introduced directional headlights to a mass-produced car. Italian sculptor and industrial designer Flaminio Bertoni and the French aeronautical engineer André Lefèbvre styled and engineered the car, and Paul Magès developed the hydropneumatic self-levelling suspension.
That old E30 black BMW was awesome! The Audi S1 Evo is the best sounding rally car of all time. 5 cylinder turbo. Love that. The Renault 5 is mid engined hence the wide arse end. Love the escort Cossie at 7:43. Mk2 escort at 8:09 amazing! Oh, and it's "lan-sea-ah". Keep up the good uploads
Fun fact, the DS23 had a rally version, the one in the video did not have the massive wheels the rally version did. Also, there's a little lever next to the handbrake, you can switch ride height because it's hydraulic suspension. Three options: low rider, normal and "pretending to be an offroader". They did decently well in their day from what I can remember.
This is awesome 👍👍 I live in the Eifel and it's the best place on earth. Some of these rally cars came through my village between Stages. Love your videos ✌ don't ever change Ian 👍
In 12.30 is a citroen DS. A very radical car for its Era. We re talking about 60s and 70s and a car showed up with fully hydropneumatic suspension that could rise or lower the car. And so many other innovations. Also check highlights of the Scoda Octavia wrc. It raced prior to skoda fabia. Another monster.
The cars you see in this festival are the real ones that race the stage like the Quattro with the side exhaust is the one that race at pikes peak ^^ And yes the Renault 5 Turbo had wild rear wings caus it is a rear wheel drive car :D even the stock model had those ^^ The nissan you saw is the nissan 240 rs that was in group b ^^ By the way love your videos man !!! keep on doin it cause i really enjoyed watchign them
The DS Rally Car was an absolute beast in African Rallies, they won it all. They weren't the fastest, but thanks to their suspension, they could hold the highest average speeds, hence their victories.
The white Audi S1 is a detuned OG car but pretty much every time you see one anywhere it's a replica. They are super protective of their race cars, and keep them in a facility that is basically a bank vault that is not open to the public. Prospeed out of Bulgaria has a exceptionally savage S1E2 clone if you want to check it out.
at 8:41 ian only has eyes on the audi and missed totaly the trabant at the background on the road - such a shame to miss the allmighty "rennpappe" (racing cardboard). xD
I currently have a strict schedule when it comes to motorsport. On Saturday I was at the Oldtimer Grand Prix at the Nürburgring. In 2 weeks we're going to the DTM race at the Nürburgring. And 2 weeks after that to the 12h race. This time at the Nordschleife.
Now Skoda are part of the Volkswagen Group. Their car are good. I own 2014 Skoda Rapid. Which I've owned for 4 years. I have no issues with it. Other than normal wear and tear.
DS from Citroen used to rally. It had a first major improvment that was hydraulic suspension you could change from the inside deck giving it an advantage for old rallys like panamerican for example. A real french car that last real long and was really comfy.
Your cheddar cheese 205 is the Pikes Peak version, 1985 or 1986. Hence the big number '2' on the door. The Audi with the big number '1' did the same event in the same year with Ari Vatanen at the wheel. The BIG wings was used to get as much downforce as possible because of the altitude thus thinner air up nearer the summit.
The flame-spitting turbo-engines do that because they have an extra fuel injector in the exhaust - keeping the turbo spooled up to reduce lag caused by dropping RPMs whilst shifting.
the road legal version of the skoda fabia came with a few engines, starting with a 1.2 petrol, a 1.4, and then the highest spec came with a 1.9 tdi with about 105hp, and then a 130hp 1.9 tdi which was known as the fabia VRS
It's a mix of old rally survivors and replica's build recently. The Ford Escort mk5 is a old Belgian Rally car (sponsored by Belgacom) but now drives on UK numberplates. So it was driven as a rally cars in the 90's and sold to and owned now in England. All cars need to be streetlegal just to comute from rallystage to rallystage.
Hi Ian love watching your videos. On a different subject. In Australia a car licence allows you to drive sedans or utility vehicles but to drive a truck you need a different licence. That’s why 4wheel drive vehicles or utes aren’t called trucks because of the different licences. In America is everything called a truck under one licence?
5:32 is the Renault 5 MAXI TURBO dearly called BIG ASS or FAT ASS in my home country. Since you asked the reason why they widened up the rear axis is because that thing has over 250BHP and is mid engined so they wanted to achieve maximum stability. Being it a very short wheel based between axes, it was truly difficult to drift or slide for too long on tarmac.
8:38 the car in the background must be a survivor& a replica. The original must be a Trabant 800RS Group A0 form 1986, 2cyl 2stroke 771ccm 65hp 128Nm. But this seems to be a replica because of the writing on the windshield. There was no Car-"... Shop ..." in the GDR. Only InterShops. The license plate is an oriiginal from the GDR, it tells it was from the region of Karl-Marx-Stadt according to the T being the first letter on it.
9:50 Rally cars in germany are required to be street-legal, since they have to drive to and in between stages. If they use a special "Motorsport registration" they do have a few exemptions, like being allowed open wastegates and airbag-deletes. But then they can only be used for official events. With normal or historic plates they got more restrictions/no exemptions, but can be driven whenever. A nice side-effect is that they have to adhere to certain noise-limits, meaning you usually don't need ear protection to watch a rally.
I like your honesty abut not knowing things about some european cars, still stoked when you see some of those rippin arond the track! Keep up dude, cars and bikes are all over the world, there is everytime a reason why people race them, and like them. Racecars do not know borders or continents, they just want to get raced.... big up for your entuhusiasm! Keep it real!
this Rallye Festival ist every Year and its really close to the Nürburgring, maybe 20 km or so, i live in this region. Normally even Walter Röhrl participiates every year with an ancient Group B Audi. It could be an interesting Trip for People from the United States because you can see first the classic Rallye Cars, then visiting the Nürburgring and after that you can visit an other spectacular Race Track in Spa Francorchamps, its about 120 km between both Tracks
It is more of a mid engine front wheel drive. The gearbox is in front of the engine. And the suspension is still superior to modern cars. But the thing that was really the next level was the inboard mounted giant diskbrakes, in 1955. And it had high pressure breaks, and a button on the floor for the break..
@@magnuslundstedt2659 Hell yeah, why are we still carrying jacks, the Citroen system picking up the wheels individually was amazing on top of the ride and handling advantages
if a Audi has a numberblade with IN(for Ingolstadt) on first, its an original from Audi-Sport. the car with the 59 as number is the Pikes Peak Spec from Audi, the Peugeot 205 with the wings is also a PikesPeak spec. greetings from germany

Also, if I'm not wrong: Delta S4 was driven by Harry Toivonen at this event, Henri's brother. But not in this video unfortunately.
Every rally car needs to be roadlegal. They must drive from stage to stage on normal roads and traffic.
Can confirm. Spent a morning watching these racing off traffic lights at the rally of Great Britain.
In fact, I knew some driver who was under 18, so he didn't have driver license yet, so the co-driver was who drived the car between stages.
The car in n 6:25 is Renault 5 turbo. it is wider in the back, engine was in the rear, so needed air cooling, wider tires etc, no easy thing to drive

We're talking 1955 when the Citroën DS was launched, let it be known!!
yeah, recommended it awhile back, but maybe he hasnt seen
What's it not a v6 midt engine i think 🤔
It will take a year to explain! I can start with kit car era which is my favourite + I'm french!
Old Toyota is a corolla WRC
Man… you’re wrong. The second pronaunciation is wrong. I’m italian and it’s Lancia, not Lancìa or you would write it.

Jokes on us Brits... at least Skoda didn't give the world the Morris Marina or Rover 2800 😂
Škoda is a part of the Volkswagen-company since many years.
The Renault with the wide heck is actually R5 Turbo 2 which has the engine implanted in the rear instead of the usual front engine.
Rally cars need to be street legal to drive between stages on public roads

@Subie 69B thats one of the best things you can have when spectating at rally events. have been side by side with WRC legends in the 90s and 2000s while spectating at world rally events.. even waved at some of the drivers who usually wave back.

The "weird" car was an old beautiful Citroën DS 21.
USeveral times winner of the Monte Carlo Ralies, the Daccar Rallies, etc.
The older cars are original vehcles, kept in perfect shape.
Acctually, the newer models require extensive maintenance during the rallies and obviously between rallies.
All vehicles must be registered and fully legal
Rally-inspectors go through every single machine to ascertain if they are in compliance with strict Rally regulatns.
The awesome thing aboutthis citroen is not only that its extremely unique

People who don't actually drive their cars (much) usually don't go through the trouble, so the cars that wear it usually can be spotted out and about in traffic^^
Lesser used, worse condition or "out of era" modified cars tend to just go with a red plate, like the black BMW E30.
Nothing is beating the Lancia Delta HF Integrale in the Martini livery. I saw one in the 80s parked inside an airport terminal as an advertising feature and you could feel the power of it just standing close to it. Stunning machine.

I couldn’t agree more. Fascinating machine, magic….
all car´s are street legal they must drive from one section to the next section on legal roads that´s why they must have licen platte
One of them was the car from Steve Blomquist. Check the License plates, these with IN are usually original factory vehicles provided by Audi.
Rally cars have number plates cos they are road legal to drive stage to stage. Also remember 500 Road legal models must also be made and sold to enter a rally
It is 5000 models
If I remember correctly, Lancia Stratos was the first model primarily targeted for rally, and they produced the 500 just to be able to enter.
"How many legends did Lancia make?"
LOTS...

6:03 That's a Renault 5 Turbo, and it's width is like that because many care like the 205 T16, MG V6R4 and this car have the engine mounted IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CAR, so that there's a better weight distribution
7:42 Ford Escort RS Cosworth, aka Cossie
10:37 Peugeot 205 T16 Pikes Peak, same situation as the Quattro, it has a twin turbo V6 mounted in the middle of the car and AWD.
I have to say I really enjoy your reactions!! Seems so genuine and honest. Gettings from Germany
I believe that rally should have been the natural evolution for NASCAR, think about it moonshine runners driving on back roads to deliver shine or getting away from the revenuers.

2:15 that’s a Peugeot 306 maxi, FWD, around 300hp (N/A) for less than 1000kg

I've always pronounced it as in Armstrong's first name but sounding e-uh at the end like Lance e-uh, Lancia, whether right or not it's how I've always heard it 🤷♂️
It's wrong, since it's Italian, your English way of pronouncing it doesn't work. It's supposed to be "Lunch-uh".
Yup at 6:13 the Renault 5 Turbo had in the rear a wider stand. It was the same with the regular civil version.
@9:40 That Audi is an original S1 that was driven by Bobby Unser (the famous US racing family) on Pikes Peak 1986. Audi Sport Veghel (the owners) have at least 8 original rally Audis in their collection .
2:10 Peugeot 306 Maxi
5:50 Renault 5 Turbo : The larger rear track width's purpose is to accomodate the engine place in the back (wider tires)

These old Escorts are such great rallying-platforms they still get used a lot today.
The motorsport-community around them is so big that you can buy new chassis-shells, set up for different wheel-widths.
There's a company in England building full Mk1 and Mk2 Escorts called MST is that who your thinking about?
I see many comments already, but I'll put in my replies as well:
- the Corolla was a WRC car, run between 1997 and 1999, it won 4 WRC events
- the Peugeot is a 305 Kit car.
Wooow!
Cars are the real thing.
Well kept, they are worth a fortune.
Regarding the plates, they should be fully legal
I feel your Audi 'Urquattro' flip so hard 😂

When the Renault 5 was new they did a "Renault 5 Cup" where they had famous race drivers compete in a fleet of these, as a "gimmick" during F1 weekends.
The car you saw on 12:00 is a french Citroen or Citrön writen, from the 70ties,
the shape is very french artist crazy from out of space design , a bit like chevy or bentley,
typical bullet shape, the shape was mostly done to have aerodynamics so wind do better fow off the car and not slow it down.
Also when it looks funny , the car was loved by many people,
because it had one of the best shock absorber at this time and hydraulics, it was the 1st series car had brakeboosters onto the Disc brakes,
it had swiveling headlights to light up curves and an automatic level control with hydralics , it did win 2 times the rally of monte carlo.
In Europe are small cars also very often, because we got cities which are very old do not have "Roads" in this sense more passage between houses and you will never
get rid of historical , expensive , very old houses and cities , just to build a road , there are specially build very small cars for all those people , often in old Cities in France, Greece or Italy ... to have something better then just scooters and bikes, which will go through the small passages, some got even the door in the front where the stearing wheel is, so you can get out of the car even when left and right is a wall.
in the USA its their build a new land from scratch and mostly big roads for the car industry and more mobile flow.
There are some rallies where not only high tuned cars taking part of , some people
drive their expensive and rare old timers , like they wanna show how good cars were build even in the 50ties to 80ties
and for them its mostly to reach the goal at the end of the track and nostaligia , not so much of winning this.
There are many different rallies some even only for old timer cars, some for buggies, some even for motocycles, some for Trucks , some for Jeeps, then some only limited by horse power so you can only drive very small cars,
some are open for everyone with a rally licences, some are only open for high tuned car, there are local rallies , and of course the WRC World Rally Champoinship, there are very different Tracks and countries to challange , like Desert, jungle, Snow and Ice, Sand and gravel, Road and asphalt , some are very curvy and the car is tuned down to get all the power into the lowest gears for acceleration and some are more high speed where the car get tuned to more high speed power of course limited because there are bumps on the track you will not drive with 300km/h, but as fast as the track will allow it
Kinda late and dunno of it's been answered, but the wider stance on the renault 5 Turbo at 6:00 is because the engine is mounted in the rear and the vents you see are practically intakes for the engine and radiator
2:04 Peugot 306 Maxi
13:18 Lancia 037 fun fact; the very last RWD car to win a rally.

"Wider rear end"
I haven't checked dimensions..
In racing it had some wins around 1960.
It's a premiere that these guys, so casual, can have a stand there.
I throw some links below. I hope automatic translation works fine !! These videos are very cool.
Group B history : th-cam.com/video/6lWblEHsssU/w-d-xo.html
They try ORIGINAL Group B cars. In 2nd and 3rd videos, Gian Mario, the owner, and former pilot at the time of Group B existence, do a bit of demo :'p
th-cam.com/video/nSTIxIkl3Z0/w-d-xo.html (one of the last Group B cars)
th-cam.com/video/gNjtC045GQI/w-d-xo.html (not Group B. One of the lastest Group 5 before Group B was created. Much less powerful than Group B)
th-cam.com/video/ZX7wZWYlJOo/w-d-xo.html (Group B. In between the cars seen in the 2 previous videos) (the red car is one of the 220 serial ones made to homologate. It is the first time a manufacturer didn't think any second to design an easy and convenient car for serial. So they had a better base for the race version ! The white one in the video has raced in 1982 and crashed. Then been restored.)
Here they try a new car, Peugeot 208 Rally4. Factory modified. It is 1.2L 208HP 1080kg for entry level in rally.
th-cam.com/video/tP4OUnuEKOo/w-d-xo.html
Paris motor show. They expose rally cars, group B cars, Pagani cars... But the masterpiece is none of them. It is their project of 1000 HP Fiat Multipla. The most ugliest family car of all times ! x) turned into the most outrageous race car.
Start by one of the youtubers : th-cam.com/video/jD0y5MQc69A/w-d-xo.html
The stand : th-cam.com/video/io2zAPoYbJk/w-d-xo.html
Have a good time (I really hope subtitles work fine)
Citroen ds.
thanks to both being the first mass production car equipped with hydropneumatic suspension, as well as disc brakesThe 1967 series 3 also introduced directional headlights to a mass-produced car.
@8:40 was the Trabant keeping up with the Audi or it got overtaken?
This is awesome 👍👍 I live in the Eifel and it's the best place on earth. Some of these rally cars came through my village between Stages. Love your videos ✌ don't ever change Ian 👍
In 12.30 is a citroen DS. A very radical car for its Era. We re talking about 60s and 70s and a car showed up with fully hydropneumatic suspension that could rise or lower the car. And so many other innovations. Also check highlights of the Scoda Octavia wrc. It raced prior to skoda fabia. Another monster.
The cars you see in this festival are the real ones that race the stage like the Quattro with the side exhaust is the one that race at pikes peak ^^
And yes the Renault 5 Turbo had wild rear wings caus it is a rear wheel drive car :D even the stock model had those ^^
The nissan you saw is the nissan 240 rs that was in group b ^^
By the way love your videos man !!! keep on doin it cause i really enjoyed watchign them
@votejj oooh i didn't know that O:
nice to know then thanks ^^
and yeah even if it's a replica it is still one hell of a monster !
Prospeed out of Bulgaria has a exceptionally savage S1E2 clone if you want to check it out.
at 8:41 ian only has eyes on the audi and missed totaly the trabant at the background on the road - such a shame to miss the allmighty "rennpappe" (racing cardboard). xD
You have to watch the rally cross 2018 highlights and some of the older 80s highlights. They are mental with 6 lap sprints around small tight tracks.
9:50 a lot of these cars travel on the road to different rally stages so they must comply with traffic laws in the respective countries.
The flame-spitting turbo-engines do that because they have an extra fuel injector in the exhaust - keeping the turbo spooled up to reduce lag caused by dropping RPMs whilst shifting.
for the lancia question , you're saying it right! greetings from italy
the road legal version of the skoda fabia came with a few engines, starting with a 1.2 petrol, a 1.4, and then the highest spec came with a 1.9 tdi with about 105hp, and then a 130hp 1.9 tdi which was known as the fabia VRS
The citroen DS is technically front mid engined four cylinder (motor behind the gearbox). they were used for long distance rallies.
6:00 This ist the Renault 5 with a V6 in the middle and rear povertrain.
Controversial "Best car" ending. Love it. Thanks.
9:50
Rally cars in germany are required to be street-legal, since they have to drive to and in between stages.
11:30 just the wheel base of the Citroen DX/DS is insane! Front engine, front wheel drive but for the time it had superior suspension.
yep,and for changing tyres it rocked!
It is more of a mid engine front wheel drive. The gearbox is in front of the engine. And the suspension is still superior to modern cars.
But the thing that was really the next level was the inboard mounted giant diskbrakes, in 1955. And it had high pressure breaks, and a button on the floor for the break..
@@magnuslundstedt2659 Hell yeah, why are we still carrying jacks, the Citroen system picking up the wheels individually was amazing on top of the ride and handling advantages
nissan 240rs mentioned, it's one of my favourite rally cars!!! always reminds me the safari rally with shekhar mehta and timo salonen at the wheel 😊
if a Audi has a numberblade with IN(for Ingolstadt) on first, its an original from Audi-Sport. the car with the 59 as number is the Pikes Peak Spec from Audi, the Peugeot 205 with the wings is also a PikesPeak spec. greetings from germany
They have to drive on general roads to get between stages so yes, they have to be road legal.
