Built one thats all blacked out with a PVD case and black yacht master bezel insert and the other in regular stainless. I do really like this green model Seiko 5. Great color!

      @@minitwatch Thank you Kurt :)) Yes i did, i've got a flat sapphire crystal and a signed crown from Crystaltimes and a coin edge bezel and lumed sapphire bezel insert from Lucius Atelier :) It's almost like a new watch now and i really like it! I would also want to get the strapcode super jubilee to really balance the weight of the watch but i am not so convinced by the protruding end link having such a small wrist. I currently have it on the stock Seiko jubilee and i love the look and feel of it, it's just a bit too light so the watch feels a bit top heavy as you might already know :)

    Always sort of liked watches peripherally, wore some here and there for nice occasions but I’ve recently been really getting into them like crazy and want to start building a bit of a collection. Have several fossils, honestly pretty nice ones although that may sound funny from a watch enthusiast perspective, a seiko Coutura perpetual solar, a Tissot, Tuffina, and just grabbed this sucker. Honestly super excited to get it. Love the green dial on a diver and GMT. Super classy. Next I really want the 5 Sport GMT with the blue and black bezel.

    My thoughts on this watch are that it's the one that I've been waiting for. I like to be able to hand wind so I can keep the watch running while I'm not wearing it without a winder. The other feature it has that is very important to me is the applied indices rather than just painted on dots like the SKX was. It really steps up the aesthetic of the dial and makes it more pleasing to the eye for me. They moved a dive watch over to being a sports watch and made it better for what most people are actually using it for. I can grab the crown and wind it real quick without unscrewing a screw down crown. For me this is going to make a much better experience during every day use.

    • @minitwatch
      @minitwatch  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@minitwatch I have only positive thoughts about every aspect of the changes I mentioned. If I were a diver I would use a dive computer. I will be waiting for the price to drop, and I believe it will. I already spotted a few for nearly half the retail price at a few department stores websites and that might not be gray market.

    • @aleksandarvujanic7914
      @aleksandarvujanic7914 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      To be honest, you should avoid hand winding capability. You can do this, but automatic watches are desighned to wear them and automaticly wind them with your hand.

    • @BlackthorneSoundandCinema
      @BlackthorneSoundandCinema 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@aleksandarvujanic7914 You're right. It is not best for the movement. I learned that at some point and agree. But also sometimes I need to keep my watch running just here and there when I don't want to have to reset it, but will wear it again soon.

    Yet another thoroughly enjoyable video added to the canon. The 5KX is the better overall watch compared to the iconic SKX. The reasons are practical, not idealistic, just like how the popularity of SUVs is perfect for driving to the shopping mall and going to work in a a cubicle.
    For that, Seiko still offers several real divers. For everyone else who doesn't scuba dive at the ~$200 price level this lineup looks great.

    • @stevenwymor1398
      @stevenwymor1398 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      minitwatch well, my view is that they degraded one of the most iconic dive watches ever produced. I think they could have upgraded the SKX with the 4R and then put it in the Prospex line and kept all the ISO features. Then release a handful of these color ways every couple of years as limited edition models and people would still line up to buy them. It would also keep people interested in anticipation of what new LE version of the SKX was coming. But that’s a marketing decision. Just my 2¢. Seiko never asked me. 🤣

    • @minitwatch
      @minitwatch  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stevenwymor1398 I suspect Seiko has an evil-genius master plan :p. Perhaps they will indeed make a new version of our beloved SKX (and charge 600 dollars).

    • @stevenwymor1398
      @stevenwymor1398 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      minitwatch I doubt it. They should have discontinued the Mini Turtle that no one is buying and replaced it with an upscale SKX. Although, I do have a PADI Mini Turtle and love it, but can you imagine a PADI SKX with a Wave dial and raised indices like on the SKX171? I’ve modded plenty of SKXs though and more are coming. Building them from the ground up is the now way to go.

    At launch, you were able to get a Zelos Swordfish for $300. You should check Zelos out if you haven’t already.
    Very interesting that the boys brought up RC cars. You could get a new Tamiya Buggy for $330. Not sure if your familiar with Tamiya but they are cool. I have built some of there re-releases as well as a Vintage Blackfoot.

    • @minitwatch
      @minitwatch  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it was only highs school teen angst that created the negativity. Growing up here, you never messed with the Samoans. Unless you were Tongan or Hawaiian :p The three of those groups would clash all the time especially Tongan vs Samoan. I don't know why. They were the biggest and toughest and for some reason, they disliked each other as a whole. Aside from my Japanese, Chinese, Filipino and Caucasian friends, most of my other homies were Hawaiian and Tongan so you can see why I felt trapped. :p Her family was just great. They tried to feed me WAY too much. It was always "YOU HAVE TO EAT MORE FOOD" Every time I went over to her house, it was a friggin feast and I didn't like Samoan food. They figured it out and started making spaghetti and chili and stuff. They were great! So yeah, they are amazing people.
      We saw Sleepless in Seattle haha! She cried like crazy. Tiana was just like any other girl but with tremendous physical capability :p We stopped seeing each other shortly after because they had to move away fairly quickly.

    • @williamzoom
      @williamzoom 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have heard about Samoan and Tongan gangs and stuff but think that is more of a west coast thing, there really is not a large group of them out here. I don't think I have ever met a Tongan! I guess that animosity between islanders goes back a very long way! I thought it was always Hawaiians vs everyone else because that is how they are characterized by the media! I was invited to Samoa by my co workers and did not have the money at the time, I wish I could have gone! I think in 90 my girlfriend and I saw like 16 movies in theatres that year, not including Pump Up The Volume which we saw four times! I still have never seen Sleepless in Seattle though! )

      @minitwatch  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It would fit but if they use the same fat bars as the SKX, probably not. You'd have to change the springbars to thinner ones. I am going to test that theory out in the next straps video for this watch!

    Very nice! I was curious what those are like in person....
    Definitely not an SKX replacement.... Also, I'm not sure I love the new "5" thing... I didn't mind the shield to be honest, but I think I was in the minority....
    I think Seiko is in the midst of a pricing re-vamping.... $335 will not buy you a Samurai. Not anymore. I paid like the mid-400-ish range, for my last 2.... Or, by all means, share where you are getting Samurais for $350....
    I think Seiko needs to be a little careful... 3 years ago, yes, great value for money, no doubt. And in that value proposition, we were willing to overlook a few things, like bracelets that were not all they could be, and hardlex, and chapter rings....
    As they keep sliding the prices up... You could have a Swiss experience. And then there's no compromises. Sapphire. Nice bracelets. All that stuff, is assumed....

    • @minitwatch
      @minitwatch  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dude check out the prices: amzn.to/32rsebb This is of course, an affiliate link (for legal reasons ;p).
      Seiko is a very clever company. They don't do things without study first, as you could imagine. They may not get things right all the time but they definitely attempt to psycho-analyze the buyer market and utilize the data to promote their products...much like any big company. They have gotten onto the bully tactic bandwagon like how Apple, Samsung and other cell phone makers have been doing. "YOU NEED THIS, SO YOU WILL SPEND THE MONEY".
      And we will. Unfortunately.
      You could have a swiss experience for about the same price. My Steinharts Ocean One 39 is a Swiss watch and only thirty dollars more.. It was made in Switzerland, has a 28.8 ETA movement, sapphire crystal and looks great! The thing is, when I wear it, I don't feel the same things as I do when I wear some of my Seikos. I don't know what it is...

    • @TheShotenZenjin
      @TheShotenZenjin 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You’re absolutely correct. It’s in no way an SKX replacement, it’s a Seiko 5 sports replacement. However, some unscrupulous “agents” are trying to sell or promote these models as the “new SKX”. If anyone wants an “upgraded” spec SKX, or just a real diver watch, just check out the Prospex range.

    I don't understand the omission of a lume pip on the bezel. That's some weird corner cutting. Easy enough to swap out but for the money I shouldn't have to. I can almost forgive the lack of a screw down crown. This could have been such an excellent watch with just a couple minor additions. I think Orient offer much better value.

    What up Kurt! First day of vacay in the littlest big town in the world Reno, NV (this place is a shithole), and headed to Tahoe tomorrow. Can't believe you got a Seiko where the indices and hands lined up perfect.

      I flew over Reno last month. Twice! First time it was aboard a 737-900 and then an A320. Does that information matter? No. But I am an aviation junkie :p
      I know right? Perhaps that's one of the good things about getting a JDM version? :p
      That's funny. All of the girls who were taller than me were super sweet but all the ones who were shorter or about the same height have been psychopaths :p

    It's sad, but it seems Seiko is heading down a route most of us enthusiasts won't be happy with. The pricing is just slowly getting out of the "there is no watch better for under 500". They are getting more and more expensive. In comparison, this watch is not an actual JDM, but an "Asian market" model (JDMs are models that can only be found in Japan, like the SARB033-35, for example, this one has a counterpart sold for the Western market). The price of this watch is priced at what the original price of the mentioned SARB was, which is a watch that is miles ahead in quality.
    The new Alpinist revision (which is not an actual Alpinist, but a "Prospex" line copy of the Alpinist) has a price of like around 700 bucks, which is just insane (the original green dial Alpinist, at an inflated price, is still around 450, lol). Another example is their new SARY147 "Presage" line watch. Probably will become very popular in years to come, but the price is around 450 bucks for a watch with 4R35 movement. A SARY055, a watch that is bigger, has the same movement and very similar appearance was being sold for around 280 bucks a few months ago.
    Sad to see this becoming a reality. And I doubt they will stop, the demand is there.

    • @minitwatch
      @minitwatch  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To me, this is definitely the JDM version of this watch. The reason for this is that 1) it utilizes Kanji in the day wheel 2) is assembled in japan and 3) has a different model number for appropriate taxation reasoning. This model is made to be sold within the Japan Domestic market. It is available outside? sure! But so are so many other things made for the Japan Domestic Market. This is what Seiko told me :p. That being said, I surely agree that their prices are growing and growing and it is certainly bad for us Seikoholics BUT, I think it's good for the market as a whole. It's definitely good for the boutique watch companies who want to sell watches at a cheaper price. Seiko wants to distance themselves from "Cheap" and I don't blame them. I don't LIKE it but I don't blame them.
      As for the new Alpinists, the newer 6R35 movement that is said to be utilized within will have a 70 hour power reserve. Not many automatic watches within that price range will have that kind of power reserve. It will also (hopefully) have DiaShield. Does that warrant the huge price increase? That is for you to decide. I for one will be trying to get one as soon as possible. I just have to sell parts of my body to do so :p. The watch-world is every changing and it's a great time to be a smaller watch company!

    • @minitwatch
      @minitwatch  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also, I've had the SARY055. I regret selling it! It was a great watch!

    • @furiogiunta295
      @furiogiunta295 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Kurt! Thanks for the reply, fan of your channel, by the way, one of the reasons I bought my SARY055 was your review of it (selling it now though, going for something smaller like the SARB035, lol).
      As for my "JDM" comment, well, that's interesting. A lot of the "Made in Japan" or "J" reference models usually come with an Arabic date alternative, but having in Kanji absolutely makes more sense for it to be considered "JDM". To be honest, Seiko is very confusing when it comes to these things. You have the "J" models that come with the made in Japan label and come in Arabic dates, then you have the SARB series that literally can only be found in Japan and the you have these that come in "international" and "domestic" versions. Damn.
      But I suppose this watch follows the "Presage" line model, slap on the "Automatic" label on the dial and call it domestic, lol.
      Anyways, thanks again, Kurt and keep on rockin'!
