This has been my favorite since I was little; I have the old VoxBox. Both for the heart and the crisp recording. As a kid I was amazed at the source but after some time in Salt Lake City, I realized just how many descendants of converts from the Old Country are there, I like to imagine all those Svendsens and Larsens and Andersens shuffling up to their new suave, urbane maestro and asking, "please, sir, may we do some Grieg?" and he, somewhat taken aback, says "why, of course!" I don't know if that's how it went but I like to imagine that's how it went. Thank you for featuring it as it is, a bit rustic but lovingly crafted, like a toy grandpa makes in his wood shop, it is something special.
I was just listening to this disk this morning on Spotify while dog walking. Very beautiful, unfussy, well-recorded and nicely played. Wedding Day is so sadly neglected; but my misses and I used it at our wedding 28 years ago.
I was intrigued by your review and so was able to find it on Apple Music. A certainly don’t have your ear, but I do think I hear a bit of the wiriness in the string tone that you mentioned. HOWEVER, these are such character full and musical performances. I’m inspired to go listen to some of his recordings of Mahler. So musical! Such wonderful personal touches to the music. Thank you for bringing it to my attention.

I wonder why these Vox CD reissues featuring the Utah Symphony and Maurice Abravanel aren't being offered at budget price?
Because they don't have to be. They are collectors items and as such not sensitive to price--and rightly so.
Give Dave a microphone, and he could adequately replace a bassoon (at least in a second tier orchestra)😂
