Adorable Quokka, Rottnest Island.MOV

  • We spent a day on Rottnest Island, a small island just off from fremantle. We hired bikes for the day (there are no cars or electric bikes allowed on the island, just one bus and some service/emergency vehicles). The island is home to a small marsupial called a quokka. They are very used to people and so we had a pretty friendly visit while we sat and had a snack on the island.

    You're not the only one to think they look like rats. Here's a bit of history about the Island where they live.
    "Rottnest Island was discovered in 1696 by Willem de Vlamingh, a Dutch explorer, who named the island Rats' Nest due to the many large rats that he found on the island. Visitors to the island don't need to worry about these 'rats' as they are one of the islands friendly attractions, otherwise known as Quokkas which are a small wallaby."

    • @chapchap9180
      @chapchap9180 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It sounds great on paper, but even the slighest tweak of genetic makeup may result in disastrous outcomes. The newbred quokka may become dominant and flush out the pure quokka, leading to it's extinction. Too risky, but that's just my opinion. I'm pretty sure the government is funding some sort of breeding program, however, as they should do for all endangered animals.

    • @thunderbutt357XD
      @thunderbutt357XD 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Winston Smith thats potentially true but what im saying is cloning a bunch of them then encouraging interbreeding. that way the population should rise. just dont fuck with their genetic code lol, we have an entire series of movies to show why thats a bad idea

    Why havn't Quakkas been domesticated yet? These little guys could be as popular as cats and dogs.

    • @daniescobar6397
      @daniescobar6397 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Because the quokkas are so vulnerables
      So, all tender animal have to be domesticated?
      for this, the world is as it is, for the human stupidity ( sorry for my english, i speak spanish)

    • @mysteriousfleas
      @mysteriousfleas 9 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Dani Escobar There's nothing inherently immoral about domestication of a species, especially if they're easily adaptable and habituated to humans.
      That's WHY we have cats and dogs, are you going to make a ridiculous argument claiming somehow we shouldn't have domesticated them?

    • @Amoroussparkle
      @Amoroussparkle 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      microwavebenis All that person is saying is that some animals are not meant to be domesticated even though they are tender and cute as it is not in their best interest and they wouldn't thrive as pets. Oh and yes, domesticated? Maybe, but many domesticated animals are actually "man made" and a lot have suffered horribly because humans wanted certain unnatural features such as dogs with flat faces or short legs and in-bread too much, in which case its not okay - like with these cuties.

    • @mysteriousfleas
      @mysteriousfleas 9 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Amoroussparkle There's very little about these that would make them ill adapted for domestication.
      Creatures such as silky ant eaters? Absolutely, they would not make good domestic pets.
      There are still breeds of dogs that are not all that distant from that of the wolf, and so using dogs as an example doesn't serve your argument.
      The fact alone that Quokkas are easily habituated and could have their diet simulated in a controlled environment lend a lot to their ability to be domesticated.

    • @zachshaw951
      @zachshaw951 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      microwavebenis cats and dogs served a purpose as pets as well as duties such as protection or catching vermine etc. Quokkas purpose is to be cute and entertain us. Let them be free.

    One would imagine that if something is threatened, that folks "who love animals" would try to find a way to get them to become more populous. They are actually "natives" unlike some of the most destructive animals in Australia which were introduced. "Ya can't feed them or touch them." Well, Hell, why not sell what they eat or start some breeding programs to bring them back. I bet they were once far more numerous. Laws to "protect them" keep them threatened, they don't unthreaten them.
