  • Siargao, Philippines - Siargao turned out to be one of my favorite islands in The Philippines, and there are so many incredible things to do in Siargao - hence why it is becoming one of the most popular destinations in The Philippines.
Beyond all the great things to do in Siargao, there is something that I can't overlook - the amount of garbage and pollution in and around the ocean in The Philippines is a very serious problem. It is also a serious problem throughout the world.
This is my Philippines vlog from my day with The Sun Crew in Siargao as they attempt to change the course of history for the better.

Siargao, Philippines - Siargao Island is becoming one of the most popular travel destinations in The Philippines. Along with Boracay and Palawan, Siargao is a popular Philippines travel island because of their famous surf breaks and laidback atmosphere.
I'm not a very good surfer, so instead, I decided to eat my way around General Luna in between all the things to do in Siargao.
This is a list of my favorite places to eat in Siargao - From smoothies at Shaka and tacos at Miguel's to Pizza at Kermit and grilled fish at Mama's Grill.
    Enjoy!

    1. I am 100% aware that this may not be The Philippines official #1 problem. My goal for this title (and thumbnail) was to get your attention. I call it "click bait with a purpose."
    2. As I mention in the video, this is NOT just a huge problem in The Philippines - plastic pollution, especially in our oceans, is a massive issue across the globe.
    3. Check out the helpful links in the video description.

I am not sure if many people has the geographical orientation of Siargao. Although it is easy to think that locals may be disposing their garbages irresponsibly, we also need to consider where Siargao is located in the Philippine map. This part of the Philippines is facing the Pacific ocean.
The locals can clean everyday and remove all the plastics you can see. However, when typhoon season comes (about an average of 30/yr) the garbage may return, coming from the Pacific garbages that all other countries are responsible for.
On the other hand, great video that contributes to social responsibility!

@@taichitanian Talking about sources of plastics, have you any idea that for the past few years the so called developed western nations are dumping containers by containers of uncycled plastics into South East Asian nations? The Philippines president, Mr. Duterte has just announced that if Canada is not taking back these rubbish plastics they shipped to Philippines, he personally will send them back to Canada. "WE will declare war!", this is what he said to Canada.

    • @BackFromTheMadeUp
      @BackFromTheMadeUp 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@forster5392 They're not 'dumping' it, they pay countries to take it off their hands. No Western country on the planet just 'dumps' its garbage - plastic or otherwise - on developing countries. And the vast majority of the plastic you see on SEA beaches comes from the local community. Thailand is appalling, and thank god that they have just banned plastic bags.

@@BackFromTheMadeUp That's precisely my point. Why can't the West take care of their own rubbish instead of using their filthy money to export (should I use dump) their rubbish to those poor countries that can't even take care of their own rubbish? Thank you for addressing this problem. I’m from the US but am currently studying in the Philippines. I’ve never been to better beaches than here, and it breaks my heart to see them as littered as they are. I feel like these beaches and waters are rare treasures, and I’m scared of losing them. Our attitude about trash really needs to change. I do hope more initiatives such as the one shown in this video open our eyes to the problem and prompt us to act more responsibly

+Dennis -- The problem is NOT people throwing garbage carelessly. The problem is LACK OF GARBAGE CONTAINERS. The entire country has few, if any, garbage containers, where people can throw their garbage. Are there garbage containers on street corners? NO. Are there garbage containers on beaches? NO. Are there garbage trucks collecting garbage? NO, because there are no garbage containers on the streets.
In Siargao, we see schoolchildren collecing garbage and putting them into empty rice sacks. Why don't they empty the sacks into garbage containers? Because there are NO garbage containers in the first place. The Mayor should provide garbage containers, so the tourists have a place to throw their empty bags, bottles and wrappers.

I am from Taiwan, and we have very good garbage disposal system in Taiwan. What I found the problem in the philippines are:
    1. People need to be educated about garbage disposal
    2. This country needs proper recycling plans and whoever who can recycle it properly.
    3. People dump the garbage everywhere because they can't afford to deliver it to recycling center.
It's not only environmental problems, but also a social problem that everyone in this country is involved in.
Get a chance to visit Mactan. You will see how people do business there but they don't even care about this Island is buried with garbage.

"sigh" 😥😥

I've been living here in the Philippines for about a year now, and litter is definitely a problem, and like you said not just here but also worldwide. It's interesting you showed the point based system they have in Siargao, it actually reminds me of the "social credit system" they have in parts of China now. My wife and I could see it being implemented here in the PH in the future. Dueterte has already shown that he will shut down an entire island just to preserve the beauty of what they have here. We haven't been to Siargao (yet) =) ,but El Nido was starting to get pretty bad when we were there back in November. Anyways keep it up, and thanks for the upload.

I guess very little of the garbage on the beach was actually left at the beach by someone. The mess comes from the ocean - the plastic waste is brought to the ocean in rivers or even dumped to the ocean directly in some places and it's then washed ashore. The solution is not to make people clean the beaches and collect and ENDLESS stream of plastic waste but to limit the amount of plastic in general. What seemed like contradicting piece in the video was that at the end the kids were drinking from disposable plastic cups. 2dcl of water that will keep one hydrated for a couple hours but will create waste that'll stick around for centuries...

I've seen those kids the last time I visited Siargao! Awesome job @thesunscrew! That is a noteworthy initiative for the kids to do - clean up the beach and they get free surfing lessons and/or boards to use! Maybe one day, some of those kids will become the next Filipino surf champion with a heart full of love and concern for the environment. On the vlog itself, I love all the scenes showing all the smiling kids! Absolute joy in all their faces! I think this is one of my favorite among your Philippine series, Gareth. And yes, the problem about garbage (plastic and all) in the ocean is a world wide concern. Picking them up from the beaches and recycling aren't enough solution. People should learn to avoid using plastic as much as possible. There are a lot of alternatives and people have choices that they can make that suits their lifestyle. Everyone just have to make a conscious effort to help and care for our one and only planet. 🤙🇵🇭🤙

Love that you shared the beauty of what you've experienced but I also love you sharing what you experienced with the people of the Philippines.
I really love the kids, the grownups always smiling. You always smiling because of what you're seeing/experiencing... Love that.
The initiative for the kids, the people cleaning up the beaches/their beach must be shown more, not just around the Philippines, but around the world.
The Philippines is truly a paradise. The people make it even so!
In your video, the kids are smiling, happy even though they're about to work/cleanup.
I love that they're being rewarded for their efforts. I hope this continue over and over.
I hope the next generation of kids will continue this effort.
I hope organizations in the Philippines and around the world will see this video and pitch in to help.

There are trash piles all over any populated areas of the Philippines, cities, small barangays... where there are people there is trash.. even inland, where there is NO SEA. So explain to me how, exactly, the trash in that country is not their trash? If it's our trash washed ashore as you say, how does it get miles inland? I lived there for a year, I have first hand experience with the conditions there and the peoples attitudes towards littering there. Every day, countless dozens of times each day I watched Pinoy just discard their waste right where they were standing. Finished eating a bag of chips, throw the plastic bag on the ground right then and there. Finished drinking a Coca-Cola, throw the bottle on the ground...

It's unfair to say that Filipinos are undisciplined when it comes to trash, but in reality, Manila and its surrounding cities are the biggest contributors of the country's garbage problem. Your garbage collection is very unsystematic and chaotic. While you tagalogs are contributing to the problem, Visayas and Mindanao are investing in waste-to-energy (WTE) facilities, with Lapu-lapu City and Cebu City to be the first cities to own these facilities in the country. Davao City is also purchasing its first WTE facility next year.

Thank you Gareth for exposing how irresponsible most people and the government. Anywhere you go in the Philippines, most people do not look for GARBAGE CANS to throw their trash. And the government officials have responsibilities to clean the environment too. Protect the environment by enforcing a law, "PHP Fine for littering." Government should also hire manual labor and invest on machinery to pick up the trash. Invest on human waste treatment plant. One way to be rich in the Philippines is to become government officials by putting the taxpayers' money into their pocket and ignore the environment. Have these officials all over the Philippines learned something about the closure of cesspool Boracay beach? The government should spend money for cesspool and trash to protect the environment, and the people have a role to find garbage cans to maintain clean environment. We all know that MOST Filipino officials are corrupt. Do we want also to be called or labeled "TRASHY FILIPINOS"?

Cleaning such places shouldnt be anyones problem if human itself will do them-self a favour and throw their waste in a proper bin or better yet reduce the use of plastic waste coz those garbage arent done by local and tourist alone but also from other place/country.
