One personal pet peeve I have towards Illumination is all the filler that they cram into their films. Because the plots are so paper thin, the filmmakers have to stretch the runtime out just to hit that hour and a half mark, making the pacing really slow, and adding nothing to the story in general.
The Mario movie had the opposite problem where there was thankfully no filler because there was so much going on, but the pacing was so fast that everything in the film was extremely underdeveloped. So either way, Illumination makes some of the most empty-feeling movies in all of animation history.

I have to admit that I find Illumination's rise as one of the most successful animated studios kind of fascinating. I remember seeing the teaser for the first Despicable Me movie many years ago, and while I saw the movie much later in television I couldn't understand how popular it got until the second movie came out and the Minions begans appearing everywhere. As someone who has a lot of younger relatives, many of them grew or are growing watching Illumination movies like the Despicable Me/Minions, Secret Life of Pets, Sing and now the Mario Movie. I would not consider their movies to be awful (except for Hop and maybe The Lorax), but they haven't done anything excellent either, I only consider Sing 1 and 2 and the SMB as the only movies from them that I actually enjoye and would watch again
Illumination's movies can't compete in a story level with even the weakest of Pixar movies or the best of DreamWorks Animation, they don't even reached the heights of other CG studios like Sony and BlueSky. I still think they have potential of doing something great with all of the talented artists working for them

Illumination tends to embody everything I've grown to dislike about most modern big budget CGI animated features, except somehow more bland and uninspired. I've only seen two of their movies in theaters to date, Despicable Me and The Lorax, and what was featured in those, along with the audience and critic ratings of their other movies, was more than enough to tell me what to expect about the rest of the studio's works. And even the Mario movie, from what I've seen and heard about it, sounds like it'll be kinda underwhelming. Also, to anyone that tries to justify Illumination for producing "harmless movies for kids", that feels like a disservice to what kids are capable of accepting.

I can't say I agree with Nintendo being more "evil" than Disney. At least Nintendo doesn't make a monopoly like Disney does. They also didn't thank a bunch of terrorists just to make entertainment. Also, Nintendo has more time to breathe when it comes to content. Disney makes and distributes so much that their *NON-REMAKE* live-actions films don't seem to get proper treatment. They're often unsuccessful in the box office *(since the 1950's)* and are often some of the most hated movies in history.

Many people think that "kids' movie" and "family movie" are the same when it's actually not. Kids' media is media regarded mainly for just kids whose purpose is distract them like a babysitter when everyone else is busy such as Sesame Street. Some kids' media are actually great for kids and have high quality to teach them important life lessons but most of them are just as meaningless overstimulation like dangling keys at their faces. Some aren't just only baby shows as some kids' media can target mainly older kids before puberty, that features jokes and references only familiar from that age demographics.
I don't consider teen media (not Highschool musical since that's actually for tweens) to be kids' media as they can get very adult, explicit and edgy as hell, especially foreign teen media can get much more than just romance.
Family movies' main purpose however is to bring families of all ages together that is not only for kids. They can explore dark themes even though it's not that obviously explicit and too heavy handed but like in a poetic way like many other movies do for general audiences.

I fully respect your opinion that Illumination is a critically bad studio but you can't deny that the movie goers that pay to see movies in theaters enjoy thier work enough to keep coming back. If they were just a shallow cash grab that didn't care about thier viewers, they wouldn't have succeeded consistently. Hell, Nintendo is so strict with thier ips, the fact that the Mario movie was produced at all is a shock. You keep saying bad story bad story in each of thier work without even stating how the narrative could have been improved, or even change to make the theme the movies were trying to portray, Which is shallow criticism that doesn't challenge Illumination but goes to identify your lack of critical thinking. Such as...
Despicable me 1 is about a man who is clearly past his prime and foes through a midlife crisis when people younger than him have accomplished more than his entire career so in response he attempts to risk it all by completing an even greater feat aka stealing the moon but no one gives him a chance, thus he has to do it himself but realizes his own limitations aka losing the shrink ray and failing to retrieve it. He then finds a solution through the younger generation qith the 3 girls he soon adopts and qith thier influence he discovers a sense of longing he never knew before meeting them which eventually leads to him giving up what he thought he wanted for what he needed.
Despicable me 2 continues his journey not to improve his own life but to improve his daughters lives by finding a female role model for them because he knows that he alone isn't enough to parent 3 kids. As for improvements, the villian plot was disconnected and used more as a medium for gru's love story, thus it felt narrative weak. What could have improved it was the themes in the movie of gru financially supporting his family due to his lack of employment, the villian could of used dr nefario to enlist gru to commit crimes in order to support his family but also with gru trying to have a relationship with his love interest but attempting to balance both finding a mother for his kids and providing for his kids, this duality being the central core of the movie where gru has to chose between 1 or the other. This way, the stakes are much higher and the villian plot would have been woven in more organically.
Thats how you identify a problem with the narrative and develop a solution that would make sense Thematically instead of vaguely saying the story was bad. The lorax and grinch were extended adaptations that added more to the original story, yes they lost the point with the local and the new plot they added was just straight up filler, really, they could have just cut out the Ted plot and focused primarily on building the oncler and extending the destruction of the forest. The grinch was fine for what it is but the issue is that compare to its original iconic interpretation, this grinch turning good had less of an impact. Dialing up his "mean" personality would have made things more like the original.
The point of all of this is that if you want to preach about how "person a" (aka Illumination) makes bad stories, be sure to call out the parts you hate and state your opinion on how it could have been better instead of providing essentially nothing to the conversation.

Request: Could you make a video about the redemption arc of Sony Animation?
Ever since I watched "Across the Spider-Verse," I knew that Sony did so much better with their recent movies lately ever since they released "Into the Spider-Verse," but now they're absolutely killing it.
I also love the fact that now the company is actually trying to make good stories by hiring filmmakers, storytellers, and animators who are super passionate about their projects. And they're even trying new things too! For example, "Vivo" was Sony's first animated musical, so I'm pretty sure the company accepted it because they never actually did a musical before, and because Lin-Manuel Miranda was working on it for too long, they must have felt really confident about the movie because Lin is the guy who wrote the songs for "Moana."
And for "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse," the company actually hired a 14-year-old boy to animate the Lego dimension because they were so blown away by the way he remade the teaser trailer in Lego form that they couldn't help but hire him.
And of course, they hired too many talented people to work on "The Mitchells VS The Machines," and that movie almost won an Oscar for many good reasons. I've never laughed out loud during a movie more than I did with "Mitchells."
I guess Sony really tried to improve from their past, especially when they made the laughingstock that was "The Emoji Movie." They went from an animation studio that almost fell apart thanks to their bad movies *(except for "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs." Movies don't always have to be plot-heavy or have layers of complexity to be good or enjoyable. Abominable and Arietty are proof of this. The Mario movie isn't bad, it's not even sub-par, it's an average film. Average isn't bad, it's just not high art. I watched it with a friend and we both liked it; it was exactly what I expected from an animated adaptation of a simple game franchise with little to no storytelling. It didn't have to be more than what it was; now, if they plan on making a sequel, however, then they'd have to up the ante in their writing to keep people engaged, otherwise they'll just wind up with a copy of the first movie and people won't have a reason to watch it. Plus, the lighting was quite gorgeous at times-there are scenes in this movie that made me think, "Wow, that looks beautiful," when I saw them. There's value to be found here, and I think it's Illumination's second-best film after Despicable Me.
Speaking of Despicable Me, while I think the sequel was a step in the right direction, the path the studio's chosen to go on afterward is not. They seem to think that just having child or childish characters on-screen is the only way to appeal to kids, but that isn't the case at all. I think a better direction for this franchise would be to allow the girls to grow up, and deal with the various issues that arise with that-and have Lucy interact with them more as a maternal figure. Maybe even make Gru and Lucy have a son and see how that influences the family dynamic. I don't hate the minions like a lot of other people seem to, but I also don't think they can carry a whole film on their own; they work best in synergy with characters like Gru and the girls, and that's how they should keep them. I haven't watched most of this studio's other movies, and the ones I have are mediocre or outright bad. I saw Secret Life of Pets and don't remember much of anything from it, which says it all.
I think Illumination are scared to innovate because it might spook away the audience that likes these films. If they don't try to experiment, who can say for sure? I'm hoping Migration tries something new to break the mold, even if it doesn't do so successfully.
I also totally disagree on Nintendo being evil. They're aggressive when it comes to defending their IPs and fleece their customers by charging exhorbitant prices, yes, but they at least have some semblance of integrity and care about trying to provide their customers with something they'll like. Di$ney straight up insults its own fanbase _consistently_ and charges ridiculous amounts for low-quality goods and services, on top of trying to brainwash children-THAT'S evil. Oh, and they also collaborated with the Chinese government, including the authorities of a district which runs *literal* concentration camps. This is beyond bad optics. Nintendo focuses on pleasing its customers and doesn't try to preach to them or tell them to screw off if they don't like a product, which is why they've stayed in business for so long and why the Rat is bleeding money.

I understand the point of this video but honestly is there anything wrong with a “dumb” light hearted animated movie. So many animated movies nowadays try to make these deep compelling narratives about real world issues and topics. And when it’s done right it’s great. And when it’s not done right (more often than not) it’s preachy. I think there is a lack of innocent, for fun animated movies for kids and parents to both enjoy. And I think illumination fills that role nicely. Not every animation needs an Oscar worthy story or message. These are simple movies with simple premises made for children. They’re well animated (in my opinion) and I don’t think they have to be anything more than they are. Illuminations work is arguably better than a lot of what Disney or Pixar has put out recently. And while everyone is entitled to their own opinion and I respect the ones in this video, I don’t think being an adult taking a magnifying glass to these movies and over analyzing them holds much merit. It’s over thinking and it just shows you’re not the target audience.

@@arjunghose7284How? It suffers from the same writing issues as other Illumination movies, outside of pacing, in which it's the total inverse problem that Illumination movies tend to be way too bloated with filler content to pad out the runtime of a paperthin screenplay into 90s, SMB's pacing is total ADHD cramming every single member-berry to hide the fact that it hasn't thought of an actual plotline leaving all of its characters and storylines underdeveloped.

Illumination perfected Fast Food movies for families.
It's cheap, safe, simple, fairly easy to mass produce, not healthy, but it's JUST tasty enough and checks enough marks for common family movie-goers to make their kids shut up for a while as well as leaving no big impact other than "haha that was fun".
Not every movie has to be a "full course meal" (like Disney, Pixar or Dreamworks at their very best), and I think making the Minions (and their other properties) SO dumb and condensed to being mindless kids entertainment with emphasis on physical cartoon humour rather than witty sarcastic dialogue or being self-referential, is what makes it so easily CONSUMABLE for the most masses world-wide (crossing language barriers) because everyone universally can "safely" put the movies on without demanding the parents sit and explain their kids what's happening BECAUSE it is so bare-bones simple, even if that means
undermining a great story just to dumb down the narrative so more people can follow it and not feel anything but " Aww, that's cute/sad. Haha that's funny".
Illumination isn't trying to push any envelopes, it's in fact taking advantage of what will meet the middle-ground for what's assured to be a "satisfactory" experience, which will make families with SMALL small kids revisit their movies because it's a reassured source of mediocre but satisfactory entertainment.
Vast majority of family people are not movie connoisseurs, won't ask why something is good or bad, the same way you won't think about how unhealthy that burger you got from Mcdonald's actually is. You just know it's branded for you to keep coming back to get another, even if it was nothing special.

I disagree on that. I don't hate Illumination at all. I like it. There are good movies made by them that I love like the Despicable Me films, Sing, and Mario. I'd say it's one of the BEST animated studio film companies alongside Disney, Pixar, Dreamworks, Blue Sky, and Sony Pictures Animation.

I'm not a fan of Illumination, however, if they or any other studio makes a Legend of Zelda movie, ALL I WANT IS A REFERENCE TO VAATI. I NEED a reference to the grape mage! Literally the character that got me into LoZ, I don't care if Ganon is the main villain, Vaati was the only other reoccurring villain in Zelda, I just wanna see my boy getting the attention he deserves 😭
    Thank you-

The first Despicable Me always made me belive that Illumination can be capable of greatness.
They know their audience and that they don't have to try because money will come to them regardless, but being stuck in this endless zone of mediocrity must get hard sometimes for everyone involved.
I'm probably being delusional, but If only they left a tiny bit their safe zone, we could actually get something for once that doesn't seem another cookie cutter project that puts on shame the entire animation medium.

I agree with all of this except how angrily you deliver the information. Dude, at the end of the day they are just some okay movies, you don't need to say "it's just a f***ing nerd who gets to sell air" or "their only live action film to date because of how f***ing awful it was." Do you realize you are cursing at the plot of kids movies? You're gonna be okay my friend, I think you need to grow up a little because this isn't worth getting so angry over.

I think illumination might get their Spider verse moment with Migration. Not only looks interesting for what I read about, and the art style looks different from the others but it’s director is Benjamin renner, who did the big bad fox and other tales and Ernest and Celestine. So maybe there’s still hope.
