Moreton Island

    Another blast from the past - Moreton Island, old school Milo! Overshadowed by the world class reputation of Fraser Island just up the road and nowhere near as established as Stradbroke Island to the south, Moreton Island is the real jewel in this trio of Brisbane-handy sandy spots. Even though it’s right next door I’ve only been to Moreton a few times, always by boat and never for more than a slide down a sand hill and a bit of a fish off the beach - neither of which I’m much good at but hey, at least the mates get a laugh…
    Moreton got missed - at least in Rooth family planning, something I’m not much good at, ask any of our little ‘accidents’ - because we knew Straddie so we went there or everyone wanted to go to Fraser instead! But the internal tracks on Stradbroke have almost all been closed to off-road driving and the growing overseas tourist mayhem on Fraser suggests we should keep our best secrets instead of telling the world. Moreton got missed on both those scores too.
    But it sure didn't miss down at the pub...
    “Yer goin’ where? Bloody Moreton? S’pose they’re payin’ ya too ya bastard?”
    Chooka laughed and grabbed Porker and Kev as they walked through the door. “Oi! Porkfat! Guess where this lucky prick’s goin’ for the next DVD trip? Bloody Moreton! How’d’ya fool them into that?” he said, staring me out.
    “Well, we wanted to do something close because the readers like to know about the close to home trips too. And Milo’s copped a hammering lately. This is sort of a ‘run her in again’ run after the build up…”
    “Bullshit,” chipped in Fat Kev, “you’ve just gone all soft you big whooz . You’ll be filming the next DVD out the back of the pub I reckon. ‘See Milo climb the bottleshop gutter without lockers…’ Moreton? You lucky bastard…”
    See what happens when you’re sober? Nobody pays any attention. Here am I trying to talk about work and my bludger mates all think I’m on some huge scam! The fact is that Moreton Island isn’t just part of the legend of Queensland life, it’s one of the anchors. There’s plenty of places you can drive down a beach, camp behind the waves and watch the stars above the fire but on Moreton it’s still available in it’s purest form. My fishing mates - which is just about all of them except for Doc Zig Zag, watching him put bait on a hook is messier than open heart surgery - worship Moreton Island.
    So they all know it well. This was going to be tricky…
    “There’s no tough four wheel driving there anymore Johnno,” said Porker, who spends most weekends tying his TJ in knots, “it’s all designated tracks and they’ve even put conveyor belt down on the lighthouse tracks. My mum could do it in her Lada easy when we were kids and those tracks are shut now. It’s too easy. Even Kev could drive it mate…”
    We will see!

    I’m absolutely loving these old episodes again Westy you’ve really done us all a treat by re uploading them all and we thank you mate. I honestly believe a lot of these 4wd programs have a lot to answer for in how our beaches are currently being destroyed with the “just send it” attitude they’re causing more damage than they know,where as your program has always been an educational and adventurous watch.

      Thanks for that - I don';t think teachers are destroyed by traffic, not when you see what a decent storm can do. But there's some idiots amongst the real bush lovers too. I hate seeing donuts on the sand...

    I’ve spent so many days on this island in the last 40 years that I can’t even imagine how many. It’s a shame that the Comby Trader stopped working many years ago. It’s expensive to get there however, I think I’ll be there soon. Good on you John

    Was on Moreton 11 days Xmas in the early 80s, used to take a bucket swimming in
    the Blue Lagoon, when wash time came take the bucket and soap away into the bush
    rinse off the soap there to keep the Lagoon clean, Few showers and dunnies then.
    Best 11 days ever spent.

    Hey Roothy, I really hope you read this... I know the amount of flack you cop for being a “sell out” and I can’t imagine the amount of resilience it takes to keep on keeping on... but I’d just like to say that I really appreciate what you have done for the 4X4 community! I love how you give a insight into the history of the places you explore, and I like how you give advice on how long it takes to explore the place in question, and what facilities are available, this in itself sets you apart from many other 4X4 personalities. You are an Aussie icon, don’t believe anything less!

    • @johnw.159
      @johnw.159 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      "The amount of resilience it takes to keep going on"
      YEEKS !!! He's not trying to invent the light bulb LOL. . (Thomas Edison experimenting thousands of times before cracking that one)...
      Shoot - if Roothy hadn't clawed his way up to the middle; of being some sort of minor celeb; (before fx$@ing up his way to the bottom again) - he would have been seen in someone's backyard pushing a Jims lawn mower; or under ya fourby, up to his armpits in grease, working for some local servo mechanic - OK....

    • @johnw.159
      @johnw.159 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @SaltyBrains Pitty, ... you crashed and burned here bud...
      1. Ya knob - no one needs to hear from you attempting to explain how a "celebrity" is born. .(play on words "a star is born" btw)...
      2. Also, you didn't get it, that my main (only) point was in rebuking the other poster's comment / and void understanding about what it really takes to demonstrate resilience ...
      3. Also, your other fail Salty ...no mention from you ... about Roothys "celeb" demise ... ie he's not the Great Dame he once was ...
      Not talking about that / reflecting on my point regarding that one; tells other readers that you blurred through the sharpness and wit of my post...
      LMAO.. ..

    Last time I was over there was in October 2007. Been awhile and I'm sure it's changed a bit since then. Somewhere you need to go atleast once if you own a 4WD. Hope to do another trip sometime this year
