Alien you're a beta. Benchmade charges an arm and a leg for terrible quality control so they can afford to take a couple returns here and there especially when the guy is still buying their products.
How long do you keep and use these knives before returning them to the store? It seems like it would be better for you to sell these as “like new” to another person instead of returning a knife you used for a few weeks to the store. Unless the store you’re buying from also sells used knives that just doesn’t seem right.
I’ve been carrying the Bugout primarily for two years. My kids got me the new Elementum with the button release in micarta. Been carrying it all week, because, you know, kid gift. It’s my first Civivi and I have to say, very fun knife and it’s growing on me. Kids are back at college but this morning I didn’t hesitate to grab the Elementum. First world problems, I know but that psychology is real for knife enthusiasts.
I recently restarted collecting knives and decided to start with the elementum. So good, I got the elementum II and Vision FG as well. I really want to try a benchmade but it is hard to justify the price when I have been spoiled at $80 an less with civivi.
I don't know, man, I have been carrying the Mini for over 6 months and it never felt insufficient to me. I guess my needs vary from yours. The knife spends 99,98% of the time in my pocket and only the rest performing the tasks. And thus is seems logical to me to pick the one that is better at sitting the pocket yet still sufficient for my needs.
To me the problem with returning it is a lot of places will just put it back on the shelf and sell it as new, or open-box, instead of what it is:a pre-owned knife in used condition.
I hope REI told you to pound sand on that return. You clearly used the knife allot, it cannot be sold as new, there is nothing wrong with it, and you are going to return it? Man up and have some morals. You bought it, keep it. If it was defective or something that would be different but clearly you said there is nothing wrong with it, you just made a poor choice and don't want to live with it. People like you drive up the cost of goods for everyone else.
I'm glad I stumbled upon this unorthodox review. You give very entertaining analogies and this definitely helped me take off the "rose coloured glasses" that I had when I looked at the mini bugout. It's been literally weeks and I'm still torn between this and the mini-osborne haha
@@luisramosyoungbloke1232 Everything you said was true! I ended up picking up the full sized Osborne as my workhorse knife (seriously what a tank), but ALSO ended up getting a Mini Bugout just for office edc. Down the rabbit hole I go haha.
I have went through this exact same process.. most of my collection I kept buying knives the size of the mini bugout and just a bit larger and still seemed to never feel satisfied or like my knife was working for me. I finally bought a full size griptilian for my birthday and it feels so much better to me. I feel more confident in the tasks I use it for.
I like Benchmade knives. Mainly because they're made in America. The blade quality is good to great on bugout, griptilian but the handles suck. You can but a really great set of handles, like I did, from Applied Weapons Technology but, that's another $80+. You will then have a solid knife but, the cost of a Benchmade just for the blade is outrageous. I'm currently trying out suitable alternatives.

@@luisramosyoungbloke1232 this isnt true..damaged items end up in a garage sale or the used gear link on their website, if it looks okay they will put it back in regular inventory. its not a year to try out policy, its for folks who might be preparing for a trip and cant buy it all at once. their policy is really nice but its not a rental program, they use to have a lifetime return policy but the more gear that gets returned as a rental the smaller the policy gets.

No no, it's not kinda stupid at all, I have the same problem. When you grow a nice collection it gets difficult to choose your "really everyday" knife, on one side of the coin you don't want to put it to use, but also a rugged used knife gets unique and personal. We're talking high-end knives that a lot of people wouldn't buy. I am from Italy and I was SUPER lucky to find a Microtech Ultratech, I saw it and bought it not even caring about the price. Another nice addition to my collection was a Rockstead, but those two knives aren't going to cut something, ever. Actually, my EDC is a Benchmade Phaeton but I think I'm about to rotate soon.

Coming from a 940, I wanted something smaller and lighter. The mini bugout felt like a toy. Returned it and got the 556-1 for $35 more. Best choice I’ve made. Feels better in the hand and 20cv is superior.
I feel a similar way about my 940 osborne and mini osborne though i've decided to keep the mini still. The mini works great as a backup knife or something to gift to a non-knife person since they come off as less 'murdery'
This video is less about knives and more about psychology and in that light you sound really messed up. Whether its knives, guns or fishing hooks, a lot of us have the problem of lack of decisiveness which leads to this long chain of errors coming from justifying and rationalizing our actions that we know inside to be incorrect. This is how huge and useless collections come about and that leads to unhappiness and dumping things for less than they cost which then causes depression to a point that unless stopped, it all gets repeated. Even in the comments I see the same situation as you are going through because they have the affliction, too. We get power from these physical things like knife collections that we claim were never intended, we feel good, its just like drug abuse, but they are bandaids to real hurt and conflict inside and thats what we have to get a handle on before it eats us alive. In the case of knives, I had this problem too and im determined not to have a good knife as much as wanting to stop this illness that caused continuous buying in the first place. Recently I found all sorts of knives I forgot about which are excellent and useful. I took ALL the knives and put them for sale. It was painful to let them go and therein lies the problem. At first I had a knee-jerk reaction and wanted to re-buy all new knives and I caught myself and yelled STOP. Its so easy to rationalize the buying, "oh i need this for this job, that one to backup the first one..." but thats the SICKNESS talking, not reality. Instead of giving in to more sick urges like "oh i better keep/buy/have this just in case" Ive been selling everything and as the pain of separation increases, so does liberation. I see this same problem everywhere and its eating people up. They lie and keep secrets from their spouses as they keep feeding the sick behavior and its tragic. Yell-- STOP. You see something you like, the answer is STOP. You sell/return/give away something, scream -- GOOD.
I agree, it can absolutely become debilitating at a certain point if you let it. I did this with other toys years ago, it got to the point to where I would trade for something I wanted, then trade it off sometimes only weeks later for something else without ever having even trying it. Almost became like an illness, so I had to cut all ties, keep only what I wanted/needed, and just stop all together.

They’re remarkably close in size, but I have a hard time with that distinction of “mini,” as it feels like I’m getting a diminutive or lesser version of something better, and I have fairly large hands and prefer my knives to be pretty substantial. I have to agree though, for it’s lightness, ease of open and edge retention, it’s made most of my previous EDCs look/feel like worthless garbage.
For the life of me I will never understand why people talk about food prep with their pocket knives. Peeling potatoes, carrots? Use a proper kitchen knife guys. Why would you even think about using the same knife used to cut rope, zip ties, wood, card board, etc. When you're 2 paces from the right tool?
same lol. the 535 is a better knife in terms of usability/comfort because of its bigger sized blade and and handle. Makes the 533 feel like a toy in comparison. From my perspective that's the general consensus from other reviewers that I've watched. Personally I use my Spyderco Shaman exclusively and have kept my 533 as a vanity item because of it's stormtrooper look lmao.
I don't think that there's such general consensus. There are a few reviewers (Nick Shabazz, for instance) who think mini is a better knife for it's intended purpose (light tasks EDC) than regular.
I don't know if I would return it for that reason. I have a Benchmade 200 Puukko CPM-3V that just sits in the sheath and collects dust for the most part but I'm not about to get rid of it. Even though my ESEE Izula CPM-S35VN with Midnite Tiger G10 scales from TKC can do everything I'm going to need the Benchmade to do. Just some days I feel like carrying a bigger knife like during the cold season. And during the hotter Seasons I like carrying smaller knives. I do get it though. Ever since I got my mini Griptilian I haven't really used any of my fixed blades which are my favorites and most useful knives. It's just so darn practical and honestly efficient for most tasks. But it does keep me away from my favorites for the most part these days
i see you flick it with your thumb but i use my index finger and man every time it gets wedge pinched when opening i might grind down the corner of the blade
I agree with you I love my bug out so much I bought 2 535-bk4,but Benchmade has no idea how to sharpen a knife. my bug out was the dullest knife I have ever bought and the most expensive. Benchmade should be ashamed of themselves for the edge they put on their blades. I am able to put a stupid sharp edge on my blades and finish them off with a mirror edge. This is the only knife I love it more each time I use it.
I look at it as this, I’ve never in my life said to myself I sure wish I had that 135 bucks back but I have however said man I should’ve kept that knife of gun or whatever it is I sold.

Its not the company's fault that you didnt like it and yet theyll have to eat the cost of giving you your money back/store credit and they wont be able to sell it as new.
