  • I wish I had had this video when I signed up for my first 100 mile run! I cover everything you could possibly need to know about running and training for your first 100 mile race. I break down the physical and mental aspects, as well as compare the 50 mile and 100 mile races side by side. I hope this gets you your first 100 mile finish!

    I thought the most important line of this video was, "Don't come out too hot." That's good advice for 1 mile or 100 miles. We all need to build sustainable habits that are good for the long haul. This video is a metaphor for life in general.

      @@gofarsogood At the end of the day your whole life is a race. One is lucky if they make it to 100. So when things are tough just keep jogging no matter how slow. I love this channel!

    I just did a half marathon in June. I couldn’t imagine doing that and then going 86.9 more miles.

      Weirdly, I've never found it helpful to see it that way! Much like my comparison of 50 to 100, it really does become more like a "day of challenge" - more about the journey than the finish.

      U run a half marathon but you don’t run an ultra. It’s mostly walking

      I felt the same after running 2 half’s, but now am IN LOVE with ultras. Some of the differences between road races and trail races are that on the trails, you sometimes HAVE to slow down for tricky terrain and steep hills. (Another comment said you walk most of it, but that’s only personal preference, and often not possible with cut off times.) You also stop at aid stations to grab fuel/hydration… often incredibly good real food! If you stop for 1 minute or 15, that’s totally up to your own goals. Beautiful views? Stop for a picture! The pace and intensity are lower due to increased length/terrain, so it’s not the sustained agony of a half… it’s a different type of pain, in a prettier place, with better food, and the most friendly, helpful, encouraging people I’ve ever met in the running world. If you can easily run a half, you’re almost ready for a 50k!

    I completed my first 100miler end July this year, after 3 other attempts years ago, this was on a 1km circuit, therefore had to run 161 laps/km. Completed this with no help! Ran about 6/7 marathons, when finished ran a few more kms on tired legs, also ran about 2/3 ultras 50/60km. The last few months of training had to be done in the cold winter months, mid week ran 15km and weekend was long runs. I only rested on Monday, which I did strength training at home.

    Thanks for the feedback on running your first 100 miler. I'm eyeing my first, the UTE 100 in Southern Utah, and while I'm anxious about it, I feel ready to tackle the challenge!

    Always a great video Holly. I am on a roller coaster journey. Went from 330 lbs to 200 lbs from 2018 to 2020. In 2020 before the dreaded Covid hit I did the Goggins 4x4x48 which I know you have also. That is also a good training for a 100 miler I’d say. Even though I never done 100 miler but like you. I have watched a lot of videos and dream of doing a 100 miler one day. After covid I re gained 95 lbs , hurt my knee and had other medical set backs. Fast forward to today back down to 250 so lost 50 lbs again and now have a heart condition. Like Goggins a hole in my heart that caused a stroke. After I got all fixed up I’ll be back to working on running again. I only have completed 5K and 10k and half marathon on trail in deep snow and ice . But I will do a 100 miler by the time I’m 50 or sooner. I’m 46 now. I will save this video and watch it when time gets closer. Thank you for the great content.

    Ever since I’ve started using the Peloton app for strength training, I see a huge difference of not having any aches or pains while running. I also learned a lot about the importance of strength training from you.

    I’m trying to debate between actually about 31 would be the easiest is it’s on a Greenway in between Alabama and Georgia. I guess flat is can be so of course that would be easiest but I don’t know if I want to run a concrete that long the next one would be on these trails in Tennessee And they say those are about 80% runnable so that sounds kind of nice but then the other one is more challenging. It’s like 18,000 feet gain. My only issue with that one is it’s got a 30 hour cut off but that one is for charity and they’re putting in Wells like in Africa and places where people actually have to walk 5 miles to go get water, so I’m trying to debate one guy said why you just pick one easier once and then donate some money for the Wells which is also a chance, but debating between those three and but thank you for your video that everything seems helpful

    Mental and physical preparation. I missed one of your vids somewhere in the past few weeks, but I listened intently to this. YES !!! your advice is awesomeness. I did not run 100 miles last week, but I did make a King size quilt for a friend of mine, calculated it was "possible" to complete in 7 days. The closer I got to finishing, the more tired (and cranky) I became, and only 4 hours sleep most days, it ended up weighing over 35 pounds, and sewing a quilt this size even on a machine, is a workout -- not to mention the cutting, ironing, etc. Glad I'm in shape. Definitely a few hallucinations from sleep deprivation and had to remind myself to eat and drink. it took me about 130 hours of the week. I did NOT have to finish in a week, but I wanted to prove I could !!!! A mental and physical test, for sure. Thank you coach Holly, could not, would not have been able to do this without your vids. Wow, sorry I wrote a book - LOL

I gave 5 months left to my first 100 and with 3x50 miners and a 100 k done this year it’s not the ability to run I’m worried about - it’s how much I still don’t know. This helped so much I’m making notes 🥰

    I have ran a 30, 40 , 50 and a 100k. I really want to try a 100. I'm 56, and currently going through radiation for breast cancer. I will be done in 5 weeks and the indiana trail 100 is in October. It is my goal. It's gives me something to work toward and look forward to but my family is not so sure.

    Great VLOG! I'm 58 and my first 100 miler is coming up in September. I ran a 35 miler last year. My biggest lesson was run hills all day long, up and down. Anything else was junk miles. I now put at least 12 X 60 second hill repeats, at varying speeds in EVERY run of EVERY length. No slacking:) I was not prepared for the constant up and downs last year. The nutrition part is a bit worrying but you don't know until you know...you know?

      Totally! You'll be more than ready if you're doing that many hills. And you're absolutely right about the nutrition - get as much trial and error in on your training runs as you can, and otherwise just see how it goes!

    I’m going to try natural progression for endurance races. 50km, 50mi, 100km, 100mi. Started this journey 3 years ago with no athletic background. 50km checked off and going for 50 miles next!

    Just dnf at mile 37 of my first 50mi race and my 100 mile race is in less than 3 months

      You’ll be ok! Identify what went wrong - mental, physical, or both. And put some days on the calendar where you can mimic similar conditions to the 50 (whether you’re running on little sleep, running on sore legs, etc) and practice pushing through. We all have bad days! Don’t dwell - I know you can do the 100!

    I am going for my first one on Oct 29th. Scared for sure, it is so far! How did you decide a pace? Like did you map out each aid station and have a goal for it?

      Don't over think! If you are concerned about making the cut offs, manage your pace based on making those, but I wouldn't do much beyond that for your first. If you stay glued to making a pace in the beginning, you might not have enough to work with when other variables come into play. Above all, trust yourself to get through it.

    I didn't see that on my bucket list. I'm looking for my first marathon in 2024 and maybe I'll have to sign for all four races and that's because everyone sign up quickly and the challenge is open which is 5K, 10K, half and full marathon.

      Good question! I would say that for the first 50 miles, I'd walk for a few minutes (maybe 2-3) every 45 minutes or so. At the very end (mile 90+) I remember we had a 6 min run/4 min walk strategy.

    Honesty I just ran 100 miles and I thought it would be hard but I was disappointed and I learned nothing so it was a waste of time and money but knight do a 250 if it won’t be as boring and not challenging
